- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 63 - It's Not My Child
Shen Lai felt a flicker of surprise upon hearing those words.
Bai Hansui is pregnant?
Huo Chilin had been closely observing Shen Lai’s expression, expecting her to be visibly unsettled by the news of Bai Hansui’s pregnancy. Yet, Shen Lai’s face remained impassive, as if she couldn’t care less.
Her tone was casual as she said, “Oh? Congratulations, then.”
Huo Chilin clenched his jaw tightly. “You’re really not bothered at all?”
Shen Lai gave him a strange look. “Why should I care? It’s not my child.”
Huo Chilin refused to believe she felt nothing, but her expression betrayed no pretense, it was as if she truly had no interest in his affairs.
“Let’s go.” Pei Jingyan suddenly spoke up, breaking the tension between them. His gaze softened as he looked at Shen Lai. “I’ll take you home first, then head to the office.”
Shen Lai was used to Pei Jingyan putting on a show of affection in front of others. Playing along, she smiled. “Alright.”
Pei Jingyan’s lips curved slightly as he turned to Huo Chilin. “Don’t forget to invite us to the wedding banquet when the time comes, Young Master Huo.”
The words struck Huo Chilin like a heavy blow. His face darkened instantly, fists clenched so tightly they creaked.
Without another glance at Huo Chilin, Shen Lai left with Pei Jingyan.
Watching their retreating figures, Pei Jingyan occasionally leaned down to whisper to Shen Lai, their silhouettes appearing perfectly matched.
Huo Chilin had always assumed Shen Lai was playing hard to get with him. But after what had just happened, a sudden realization dawned on him.
Shen Lai might genuinely no longer have feelings for him.
Just then, his phone rang in his pocket, forcing him to snap out of his thoughts. He pulled it out and saw Bai Hansui’s name flashing on the screen.
His lips pressed into a thin line as he answered the call.
Bai Hansui’s voice came through, tinged with anxiety. “Chilin, are you here yet? I’m a little scared being alone.”
Suppressing his emotions, Huo Chilin replied evenly, “I’ll be there soon.”
Hanging up, he cast one last deep glance in the direction Shen Lai had left before turning away.
Meanwhile, Shen Lai had returned to the car.
She looked at Pei Jingyan beside her and asked curiously, “Do you think Bai Hansui is really pregnant?”
Pei Jingyan glanced at her. “Why? Do you suspect she’s faking it?”
Shen Lai pondered for a moment. “I just think the timing is a little too convenient.”
Bai Hansui hadn’t gotten pregnant earlier or later, just after her conflict with Huo Chilin. The timing seemed almost calculated.
But Shen Lai didn’t dwell on it. The world was full of coincidences. After all, hadn’t she just happened to run into Pei Jingyan that night at the hotel when she was drugged?
Soon, it was the day before the variety show’s premiere. Before filming, the two paid a visit to Pei Jingyan’s grandfather.
Pei Jingyan’s grandfather was already in his seventies, but he was still in good health. He had even dedicated a patch of land in his courtyard for growing vegetables.
When they arrived at the old house, the elderly Pei was basking in the sun in the yard.
“Grandfather.”
Hearing the familiar voice, the old man opened his eyes and saw Pei Jingyan walking in.
His gaze immediately landed on Shen Lai, who stood behind him.
Noticing the elder’s scrutiny, Shen Lai greeted him politely. “Grandfather.”
Pei Jingyan’s grandfather studied her through his reading glasses. “So, you’re Jingyan’s wife?”
Shen Lai nodded. “Yes, my name is Shen Lai.”
“Shen Lai?” Old Master Pei narrowed his eyes slightly at the name. “Is your father Shen Lingzhen?”
Mention of her imprisoned father brought a shadow to Shen Lai’s eyes. “Yes.”
She thought Old Master Pei would be like others who cared about her background, but instead, he said, “Come to think of it, your father once came to the Pei family to celebrate my birthday. What a coincidence that my grandson ended up marrying his daughter.”
Looking at Shen Lai, Old Master Pei comforted her, “Though your father is in prison now, since you’ve married into our Pei family, we won’t let anyone bully you.”
Shen Lai hadn’t expected Old Master Pei to say this and was momentarily stunned, warmth flooding her heart.
Before coming here, she had worried Old Master Pei would dislike her just like Pei Jingyan’s parents.
Old Master Pei turned to Pei Jingyan. “You brat, when I urged you to marry before, you refused to no end. Now you drop such a big surprise on me, huh?”
Pei Jingyan shoved his hands into his pockets. “Didn’t you want a great-grandson? Now you have one. Aren’t you happy?”
At the mention of a great-grandson, Old Master Pei’s eyes brightened. “Of course I’m happy. How could I not be glad to have descendants from you?”
Old Master Pei had the servants bring chairs for them, and they chatted about family matters for a long while until it grew dark and they prepared to leave.
Before they departed, Old Master Pei gave Shen Lai a large red envelope, urging her to visit him whenever she had time.
Stepping out of the old mansion, Shen Lai felt as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
Old Master Pei was far more approachable than she had imagined.
“Your grandfather is actually so easy to get along with?” Shen Lai said to Pei Jingyan.
Pei Jingyan glanced at her. “What, did you think my grandfather was some kind of monster who’d eat you alive?”
Shen Lai tightened her grip on the red envelope, forcing composure. “Not at all. I just thought he might mind my family’s situation.”
Pei Jingyan watched as Shen Lai lowered her gaze to the envelope, her lashes casting a faint shadow over her eyes, lost in thought.
Suddenly, Pei Jingyan spoke. “Shen Lai.”
Hearing her name, Shen Lai looked up at him.
Pei Jingyan’s deep eyes bore into hers. “Now that you’ve married me, you’re mine. No one has the right to criticize you, not even my family.”
At that moment, Shen Lai’s heart felt as if it had been struck, an electric sensation spreading rapidly through her body, leaving her flustered.
She quickly averted her gaze, her expression awkward. “I didn’t know you could say such comforting things.”
Pei Jingyan replied calmly, “It’s not comfort. It’s the truth.”
Shen Lai didn’t respond, but her fingers unconsciously tightened around her sleeve, her heartbeat accelerating uncontrollably.
As the day of Wilderness Survival’s premiere arrived, millions of viewers flooded the live stream.
[I’m here, I’m here! Finally!]
[Shen-Pei CP fans reporting in!]
[Damn, is this really an island? The production team went all out!]
[Honestly, this really captures the survival vibe. I’m already hyped!]
To enhance realism, Director Miao had rented an entire island for the survival theme. Over the coming days, the four celebrity couples would live here.
Shen Lai and Pei Jingyan, the first to arrive, were reunited with Wu Qi and Yan Rui, who came later.
Wu Qi walked over and hugged Shen Lai warmly.
Shen Lai smiled and patted her on the back. “Long time no see.”
Wu Qi released her and replied, “Yeah, I didn’t expect to meet again on this show.”
Not long after, the Best Actor and Best Actress arrived. Since they weren’t very familiar with the other two pairs of guests, everyone simply nodded at each other as a form of greeting.
Since they were all former guests from Rumors End on the Journey, there was no need for introductions. Once all the guests had gathered, Director Miao appeared, holding a small megaphone.
“Now, let’s welcome our final pair of guests!”
Hearing this, everyone froze, exchanging puzzled glances.
There were still more guests joining?
The live audience was equally surprised.
[There are more guests? They didn’t mention this beforehand.]
[Right? I thought there were only these three pairs!]
[Classic Director Miao, the familiar chaos-making segment is back!]
[Man, you’ve successfully piqued my curiosity! Hurry up and reveal them!]
As Director Miao’s voice faded, two familiar figures appeared in the distance.
The camera zoomed in, revealing the faces of Huo Chilin and Bai Hansui to the crowd.
