- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 65 - Is Your Husband Impressive?
Distracted, Huo Chilin dropped the support pole he had just finished assembling onto the sand.
His expression darkened further.
He had never done this before, and coupled with the sweltering heat, he had spent ages trying to figure it out without success.
Just then, Bai Hansui walked over. “Chilin, let me help you.”
Already irritated from seeing Shen Lai and Pei Jingyan acting so intimate, Huo Chilin snapped impatiently, “What can you even do?”
He forgot the cameras were still rolling and didn’t lower his voice, so their entire exchange was captured.
[What the hell? Why is Huo Chilin suddenly lashing out at Bai Hansui?]
[Seriously, Bai Hansui offered to help, there was no need for him to be so rude.]
[I feel like there’s something off between them.]
[It’s been off for a while, hasn’t it? Their dynamic was already weird in the last variety show. I don’t know why they even came on this program together.]
Bai Hansui was stunned by Huo Chilin’s sudden outburst.
Realizing he had been too harsh, Huo Chilin’s face flashed with regret as he forced himself to soften his tone. “It’s fine. You’re… not feeling well. Just go rest. I can handle this alone.”
Without waiting for her reaction, he turned back to setting up the tent, though his gaze kept drifting toward Shen Lai.
Especially as he watched her and Pei Jingyan growing more and more comfortable with each other, the burning frustration in his chest intensified, threatening to consume him whole.
Before long, everyone had finished setting up their tents.
The sky gradually darkened as night approached the island.
Since no one had eaten yet, the next task assigned by the production team was for the guests to gather limited supplies and prepare dinner.
As the most senior member of the group, Dai Jingxuan took the lead. “To save time, let’s divide the work.”
Yan Rui nodded. “Agreed. If we all do our own thing, we might not even have dinner before it gets completely dark.”
No one objected to the suggestion.
Dai Jingxuan began assigning tasks: his team would gather fire-starting tools, Yan Rui’s team would collect water, while the two groups familiar with swimming, Pei-Shen and Huo-Bai, would be responsible for catching fish.
Once the tasks were assigned, everyone got to work.
Dai Jingxuan’s and Yan Rui’s teams headed into the forest, leaving only Pei Shen and Huo Bai on the beach.
An awkward silence settled over the two groups.
[Oh god, I’m cringing so hard I could dig out a two-bedroom apartment with my toes. Ex-boyfriend, current girlfriend, and current husband all in one place, this is peak drama!]
[The veteran actor really knows how to assign teams, putting these two groups together.]
[Hey, Dai Jingxuan just paired them because they’re both good swimmers. Don’t make it sound so shady.]
[Wow, someone’s super sensitive. No one was even talking about your precious senior, so why jump in like that?]
Pei Jingyan remained unfazed, as if completely unbothered by the situation. He turned to Shen Lai and said, “The water’s cold. Wait for me up here.”
Shen Lai hadn’t been able to help much with setting up the tent earlier, so she wasn’t about to let Pei Jingyan handle this alone. “I can help you,” she insisted.
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow teasingly. “Better not. If you start drowning, I’ll have to rescue you again.”
Shen Lai’s ears burned with embarrassment. “I can swim just fine. I don’t need you to save me.”
Seeing the two of them talking as if no one else was around, Huo Chilin couldn’t resist turning back to Bai Hansui and saying, “I’m here, so don’t go in the water. I’ll handle it alone.”
He didn’t explicitly mention Bai Hansui’s pregnancy, as she was still a celebrity, and news of her pregnancy could damage her reputation.
Before arriving, the two had already agreed to keep the pregnancy under wraps for now.
Touched by Huo Chilin’s concern, Bai Hansui smiled shyly. “Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
[Honestly, these two are kind of sweet together.]
[Did the person above eat too much arsenic? How can you find this sweet?]
[So cheating is excusable now? Hope you end up with nothing but cheaters in your life.]
[Fans really have strong stomachs, they’ll swallow anything.]
While the men went into the sea to fish, Shen Lai and Bai Hansui waited on the shore. The setting sun cast a golden glow over their silhouettes, outlining their graceful figures.
Bai Hansui glanced at the camera, noticing the photographer was focused on Pei Jingyan and Huo Chilin. She spoke leisurely, “You must already know about my pregnancy, right?”
Shen Lai didn’t even spare her a glance, as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
Bai Hansui turned to Shen Lai, as if flaunting something. “Chilin said that once I give birth, he’ll marry me.”
Shen Lai’s expression remained unchanged. “Is that so? Congratulations.”
It was like punching cotton, Bai Hansui’s fingers dug sharply into her palms.
The furious reaction she had imagined from Shen Lai never came. It was as if Shen Lai didn’t care at all about her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Pei Jingyan and Huo Chilin were fishing in the sea, the atmosphere between them eerily quiet, broken only by the sound of waves.
Huo Chilin kept his head down, searching for fish, but his voice was low enough for only Pei Jingyan to hear. “Don’t think just because you married Shen Lai that she’ll stay with you. If I hadn’t broken up with her, do you really think you’d have had a chance?”
A mocking smile touched Pei Jingyan’s eyes. “If Young Master Huo is so confident, why haven’t you managed to win her back all this time?”
Struck where it hurt, Huo Chilin’s grip on his makeshift fishing spear tightened until his knuckles cracked. He glared at Pei Jingyan, teeth clenched. “That’s because Shen Lai doesn’t know your true colors yet. If she found out you’ve been scheming against her from the start, do you think she’d still stay with you?”
Pei Jingyan lifted his gaze, the sunset casting shadows across his face. His tone was calm and composed. “Oh? Then by all means, go tell her. Let’s see if she’ll believe you or me.”
Huo Chilin gritted his teeth, about to retort, when Pei Jingyan suddenly thrust his spear into the water. A huge splash erupted, drenching Huo Chilin completely.
Caught off guard, Huo Chilin’s clothes were instantly soaked, water dripping from his hair. His face darkened as he spat out each word, “Pei. Jing. Yan!”
Pei Jingyan raised his spear, a fish impaled on its tip. He arched a brow. “Seems Young Master Huo not only has poor taste but also slow reflexes.”
The implication was clear, Pei Jingyan was mocking him for abandoning Shen Lai for a woman like Bai Hansui. Rage surged through Huo Chilin, but he couldn’t lash out.
Because Pei Jingyan was right.
He had initially thought Bai Hansui was a pure little white flower untainted by the mud, but after appearing on the show, he realized she wasn’t as innocent as she seemed on the surface. In fact, she had even schemed against him to protect her own reputation.
Pei Jingyan took in Huo Chilin’s livid expression and let out a cold scoff before turning to Shen Lai. “Miss Shen.”
Hearing his voice, Shen Lai looked up.
Pei Jingyan shook the fish spear in his hand. “Got one.”
Shen Lai’s eyes lit up, and she quickly ran down from the shore to his side, staring intently at the fish spear in his hand. “Wow, such a big fish!”
Watching Shen Lai’s delighted expression, Pei Jingyan glanced at Huo Chilin beside him and, as if on purpose, emphasized his words: “So, how about it? Is your husband impressive or what?”
