- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 62 - To Avoid Harming the Baby in Her Womb
It was said that the invited lineup consisted entirely of guests from Rumors End on the Journey, and all the proceeds from the show would ultimately be used to support special groups.
Shen Lai asked, “Is it a charity program?”
Wan Shilan nodded, lowering her voice mysteriously. “And guess who the director is?”
Shen Lai frowned. “Who?”
Wan Shilan replied, “Director Miao.”
Director Miao?
Shen Lai was surprised. “He created this show?”
Wan Shilan nodded. “The previous program was suspended due to its overwhelming influence, so he launched a new one.”
It had to be said that Director Miao had a sharp business mind. Leveraging the popularity he had built up to promote the new show, he effortlessly boosted its visibility.
After all, Shen Lai had risen to fame through Director Miao’s last variety show. She couldn’t just forget her roots now that she was successful. She had no issues participating, but she was worried Pei Jingyan might not have the time.
Pei Jingyan still had a company to manage, he couldn’t keep accompanying her on variety shows forever.
Besides, the two of them had already played the role of a loving couple on a previous show. Now that Pei Jingyan had achieved his goal, would he still be willing to keep up the act?
Shen Lai hesitated. “Have you asked Pei Jingyan yet?”
At the mention of this, Wan Shilan seemed in high spirits. “President Pei said he has no problem with it.”
Shen Lai was taken aback. “No problem?”
Her agent smiled and nodded.
Shen Lai couldn’t help but wonder, did Pei Jingyan not need to go to work? How did he always have time to accompany her on these shows?
Or was Pei Jingyan worried that their performance on the last show hadn’t been convincing enough for his family, so he wanted to make more public appearances?
As she left the office, her phone suddenly rang.
It was a text from Pei Jingyan, just two short words: “I’m downstairs.”
Shen Lai looked up in surprise. Through the window, she spotted a familiar Rolls-Royce parked below.
After leaving Polai Entertainment, Shen Lai crossed the street and approached the car, knocking on the window.
As the window rolled down, Pei Jingyan’s handsome, aristocratic face came into view. Dressed in a perfectly tailored dark suit, he exuded an aura of mature composure just by sitting there.
Shen Lai asked, puzzled, “What brings you here?”
Pei Jingyan glanced up at her. “I was passing by and thought I’d pick you up.”
Noticing the laptop on his lap, Shen Lai figured he must have just come from the office.
Once inside the car, Shen Lai recalled what Wan Shilan had mentioned earlier and brought it up. “There’s a variety show that wants to invite us. You already know?”
Pei Jingyan gave a slight nod. “Your agent contacted me in advance.”
Shen Lai hesitated. “Won’t accompanying me to these shows affect your company?”
Pei Jingyan replied unhurriedly, “I haven’t secured the heir’s position yet. Others can handle company matters.”
So that was why. No wonder Pei Jingyan had agreed so readily.
Shen Lai thought to herself, No wonder he always seems to have nothing to do.
That same night, Wilderness Survival announced its guest lineup on Weibo. Not only was the director a familiar face, but the guests were also returning stars, instantly drawing the attention of a massive audience.
[Finally! The original cast from Rumors End on the Journey—we’re saved!]
[Director Miao, you’re finally back! We’ve missed you so much!]
[Director Miao is so clever! This move has already attracted a lot of attention even before the show airs!]
[Wait, if it’s the original lineup of guests, does that mean Bai Hansui and Huo Chilin, that scumbag and his shameless mistress… are coming back too?]
[No way, hasn’t Bai Hansui disappeared since the last incident?]
[Ahhhh! Does this mean I get to see my favorite chaotic couple again? I’m alive once more!]
Even before the show aired, it had already generated significant buzz. The difference was that last time Shen Lai appeared, she was an obscure C-lister who got dragged onto the hot search, but now, she and Pei Jingyan were the most beloved couple.
Not long after the show’s official announcement, Shen Lai received a call from the hospital reminding her that it was time for her prenatal checkup.
Only then did she remember that her last checkup had been a month ago, it felt like a lifetime had passed since then.
She lowered her head and placed a hand on her belly.
She was already three months pregnant.
In six more months, the baby would be born.
Her emotions were a mix of complexity and relief. Once the child was born, her relationship with Pei Jingyan would probably come to an end, wouldn’t it?
As she came downstairs, she spotted a familiar figure in the dining room. Pei Jingyan was sitting at the table having breakfast, his tablet playing the morning news beside him.
She paused. Normally, he would have already left for work by this time.
As she entered the dining room, Butler Sun approached her. “Miss Shen, you’re awake?”
Hearing this, Pei Jingyan glanced up at her.
Butler Sun said, “The nutritionist has prepared breakfast. I’ll bring it over for you.”
Shen Lai smiled faintly. “Thank you.”
Pei Jingyan casually turned off his tablet and said calmly, “You’re up?”
Shen Lai nodded and took a seat across from him. “Why aren’t you at the company today?”
Pei Jingyan replied unhurriedly, “No meetings this morning. I can go in later.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Shen Lai decided to mention the hospital’s call. “The hospital just called to remind me about my prenatal checkup.”
Pei Jingyan’s brow twitched slightly. He checked his phone’s calendar, then said after a brief pause, “I’ll go with you.”
Shen Lai quickly declined. “No need, I can go by myself. You should head to the office.”
Besides, she’d already been through one prenatal checkup and knew the general procedure.
Pei Jingyan’s tone didn’t waver. “I don’t have anything urgent this morning. I’ll go to the office after accompanying you.”
Seeing his firm stance, Shen Lai had no choice but to relent.
Going together was still better than going alone.
After breakfast, the two headed to the hospital. With her prior experience, Shen Lai completed the checkup quickly this time.
The doctor reviewed the report and said to Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai, “The baby is healthy with no abnormalities. Just come back next month for your scheduled checkup.”
Then, the doctor added offhandedly, “Although you’ve passed the three-month mark and can resume intimacy, you should still avoid strenuous activity to prevent any harm to the baby.”
Shen Lai choked abruptly and started coughing uncontrollably. “Cough, cough…”
Watching as the tips of her ears turned visibly red beneath her hair, Pei Jingyan’s gaze took on a hint of amusement. He, however, remained composed and said to the doctor, “Understood. Thank you, Doctor.”
Stepping out of the office, the atmosphere turned awkward, and for a moment, no one spoke.
It was all the doctor’s fault for saying those nonsensical things.
But then again, the doctor couldn’t be blamed, who would have guessed that despite having a child together, the two were actually a fake couple?
Just as they rounded a corner, a familiar figure appeared ahead.
Spotting Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai here, Huo Chilin abruptly halted in his tracks.
Especially when he saw the prenatal checkup forms in their hands.
Huo Chilin’s breathing grew slightly heavier. “What a coincidence.”
Shen Lai couldn’t be bothered to engage with him, but Pei Jingyan naturally rested a hand on Shen Lai’s waist and replied calmly, “Quite the coincidence indeed. Is Young Master Huo here for treatment?”
As he spoke, his gaze swept meaningfully over Huo Chilin’s lower abdomen.
Recognizing the veiled mockery, Huo Chilin’s expression darkened. “I’m here to accompany Bai Hansui for her checkup.”
Shen Lai had no interest in their affairs and was about to suggest to Pei Jingyan that they leave when Huo Chilin added, “Bai Hansui is pregnant.”
