- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 56 - Interested in Someone Like You
Everyone turned their heads at the sound of the voice and saw Pei Jingyan walking slowly toward them. His tall, noble figure was accentuated by a dark suit, making him dazzling under the sunlight.
When he saw Bai Hansui kneeling on the ground, Pei Jingyan’s brow lifted slightly. “Miss Bai?”
At the sight of Pei Jingyan, a flash of embarrassment crossed Bai Hansui’s face.
Anyone would feel humiliated being seen kneeling by a handsome man, let alone a public figure like her.
Pei Jingyan glanced at Shen Lai, then back at Bai Hansui, as if suddenly realizing something. His eyes held a mocking glint. “My apologies, I didn’t notice you earlier. I thought it was just some large piece of trash blocking my doorstep.”
Hearing this, Shen Lai couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle.
Noticing the looks from those around her, she quickly suppressed her laughter, cleared her throat, and pretended nothing had happened. “It’s fine.”
Pei Jingyan’s words were truly cutting.
Wasn’t he outright calling Bai Hansui trash?
Bai Hansui’s face flushed red, then paled. She forced a smile. “It’s alright, I understand.”
Pei Jingyan acted as though he hadn’t heard her and turned to Shen Lai. “What’s going on here?”
Shen Lai explained, “She came to apologize for framing me on the show last time.”
Pei Jingyan’s eyes curved slightly at the corners. “Apologize?”
His gaze swept over the camera crew behind Bai Hansui. “So, Miss Bai’s way of apologizing is to kneel and beg for forgiveness.”
Bai Hansui lowered her eyes, looking pitiful. “I’ve already realized my mistake. I just want Shen Lai to give me another chance.”
Pei Jingyan shoved his hands into his pockets. “If apologies were enough, what would we need the police for?”
Bai Hansui’s expression froze instantly.
Pei Jingyan glanced at the cameraman behind her, the corner of his lips quirking up. “And is Miss Bai really here to apologize? Bringing so many people to pressure her, are you trying to emotionally blackmail my wife?”
Panic flashed across Bai Hansui’s face. “That’s not what I’m doing.”
“Not?” Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow. “This incident happened so long ago, yet you haven’t uttered a single word of apology to my wife until now. And the moment you show up, you bring a crowd to pressure her. If Shen Lai doesn’t forgive you, does that suddenly make her the bad guy?”
“If we follow your logic, then anyone who seduces someone else’s partner can just kneel and apologize, and the matter is settled. What’s the point of having laws?”
Shen Lai gazed at Pei Jingyan’s sharply defined profile. The breeze ruffled the strands of hair on his forehead, as if stirring the calm surface of her heart.
Everything she couldn’t say, he had said for her.
Why was Pei Jingyan suddenly being so kind to her?
Was it just an act for outsiders?
The live-stream audience quickly caught on.
If Bai Hansui were truly sincere in her apology, why not approach Shen Lai privately? Why broadcast it live?
Wasn’t it just to manipulate public sympathy?
The public opinion, which had just started to shift in her favor, instantly reversed.
[Didn’t some people already think Shen Lai was being too harsh for not forgiving Bai Hansui even after she knelt?]
[Mr. Pei is right. If forgiveness were this easy, then anyone could just kneel and apologize after wrongdoing. What’s the point of laws?]
[Bai Hansui is so scheming. I almost felt sorry for her just now.]
[Same here, I actually felt bad for Bai Hansui just now. Turns out I was being used as a pawn.]
[What a performance! almost fooled everyone. Maybe skip the variety shows and go straight to acting, huh?]
Watching the comments that had been defending her moments ago suddenly turn against her, Bai Hansui felt a flicker of panic in her heart.
She had already planned it out, if she knelt and apologized to Shen Lai in front of the live audience, Shen Lai would surely forgive her out of face-saving and public pressure. Then everything from before could be swept under the rug, and she could continue on the show.
But now, Pei Jingyan had abruptly disrupted her plans.
And he had mercilessly exposed her intentions.
Pei Jingyan turned to Shen Lai. “Let’s go home.”
The matter had been resolved peacefully without Shen Lai even needing to step forward. She gave a slight nod, though her mind was in turmoil.
Seeing them about to leave, Bai Hansui grew anxious and was about to call out to stop them when Pei Jingyan suddenly paused again. He turned to the butler who had come out to greet them and said, “Oh, and from now on, don’t pile trash at the doorstep. This isn’t a garbage dump.”
The words struck Bai Hansui like a slap across the face, her nails digging deep into her palms.
The butler stifled a laugh. “Understood.”
Once inside the villa, the surroundings finally quieted down. Shen Lai couldn’t help but ask, “How did you know she was putting on an act?”
Pei Jingyan shook his phone, the screen still lit on the call log. “Your agent called just now and said Bai Hansui was livestreaming.”
Shen Lai blinked. “So, you figured out her plan?”
She had assumed men couldn’t see through Bai Hansui’s little schemes.
Pei Jingyan shot her a sidelong glance. “What, did you think I was as blind as your ex-boyfriend, falling for her act?”
Caught off guard, Shen Lai’s gaze flickered slightly.
Seeing her reaction, Pei Jingyan smirked teasingly. “Shen Lai, are you insulting my intelligence or my taste?”
Shen Lai couldn’t resist retorting, “Who knows if all men like her innocent little act?”
At the very least, Huo Chilin had clearly liked it, otherwise, the two of them wouldn’t have gotten together behind her back.
Pei Jingyan suddenly stopped walking. Puzzled, Shen Lai turned to look at him just as he stepped closer.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively backed away.
The next second, Pei Jingyan leaned down, trapping her between himself and the fountain. His voice was slow and deliberate. “I’m not interested in her type.”
Staring at Pei Jingyan’s face so close to hers, Shen Lai swallowed hard. “Then what type are you interested in?”
Pei Jingyan’s gaze drifted downward, lingering on her flushed lips. “What if I said… I’m interested in your type?”
Shen Lai’s heart pounded wildly. She raised her hands to press against his chest, turning her face away as she muttered, “Stop teasing me. I’m not falling for it.”
Noticing the faint reddening of her ears beneath her hair, Pei Jingyan straightened up, finally putting some distance between them.
He didn’t press further, simply saying calmly, “Let’s go inside.”
Watching Pei Jingyan walk away, Shen Lai exhaled in relief but beneath it, there was an inexplicable pang of disappointment.
Though she didn’t quite know what exactly she was disappointed about.
