- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 55 - Sacrifice a Little to Put on a Show with Me
Shen Lai paused, then quietly lifted her head to peek over Pei Jingyan’s shoulder. Sure enough, she spotted a maid pretending to clean while sneakily peering in through the doorway.
Shen Lai was puzzled. She settled back against Pei Jingyan and whispered, “What’s she doing?”
Pei Jingyan draped an arm over her, his voice lazy with sleep. “Probably sent by my parents to spy on us.”
Shen Lai quickly realized Pei Jingyan’s parents must not believe their love is genuine, hence the surveillance.
Lowering her voice, she asked, “So what do we do now? Just keep holding each other like this?”
Freshly awake, Shen Lai hadn’t yet washed up. Her flawless skin was porcelain-like, her face fair and soft. Her eyes, still drowsy, gazed at Pei Jingyan with clarity.
Pei Jingyan’s gaze darkened, reflecting Shen Lai’s delicate, rosy complexion. “Seems like Miss Shen will have to sacrifice a little and put on a show with me.”
Before Shen Lai could process his words, Pei Jingyan suddenly propped himself up on the headboard. As he leaned down, his upper body abruptly closed the distance, bringing his face startlingly close to hers.
Their lips were just a hair’s breadth apart.
Shen Lai’s eyes widened instantly. Holding her breath, she stared unblinkingly at Pei Jingyan.
To an outsider, it would look as if they were kissing.
The maid’s face flushed red, and she hastily grabbed her feather duster and scurried away.
The air seemed to freeze in that moment. With less than a centimeter between them, the slightest dip of Pei Jingyan’s head would bring their lips together.
Pei Jingyan held Shen Lai’s gaze, his deep eyes so intense they seemed capable of swallowing her whole.
Shen Lai stiffened, her heart pounding wildly.
The faint scent of pinewood lingered around her. Unsure if the maid had truly left, she didn’t dare move.
Locked in each other’s gaze, the atmosphere grew inexplicably awkward. Shen Lai couldn’t help but recall last night’s events and hesitantly asked, “Are you still angry?”
Pei Jingyan feigned ignorance. “About what?”
Shen Lai pressed her lips together.
Obviously, about last night.
“Why do you get so mad every time I mention divorce?” Shen Lai couldn’t resist complaining. “It’s not like I’ve done anything to provoke you.”
Pei Jingyan’s expression remained indifferent. “I don’t like it when you talk about divorce.”
Shen Lai frowned. “Why?”
Pei Jingyan looked down at her. “Because I think you’re ungrateful.”
Shen Lai thought to herself—she’d been playing the role of the perfect wife for him. How was that ungrateful?
“Shen Lai, are you really that eager to divorce me?” Pei Jingyan suddenly asked.
Shen Lai hesitated. Meeting his stare, she averted her eyes uncomfortably. “I was just saying it casually. Besides, we’ll have to divorce eventually, won’t we?”
Pei Jingyan said abruptly, “What if we don’t?”
Shen Lai tensed and looked up at him. “What do you mean?”
Taking in her disbelief, Pei Jingyan smirked without warmth. “Maybe I’ll change my mind later and suddenly decide not to divorce you.”
Shen Lai’s throat tightened. She didn’t believe for a second that Pei Jingyan would refuse a divorce.
Just then, she noticed the maid had disappeared. Quickly, she pushed against Pei Jingyan’s chest and added a flustered explanation, “She’s gone.”
Pei Jingyan turned his head to look, and sure enough, there was no one left.
Only then did he create some distance, lazily lying back on the bed. “Seems like my parents won’t suspect anything now.”
Shen Lai was still thinking about what had just happened, her face burning. “I’ll go wash up first.”
With that, she quickly got out of bed and dashed into the bathroom at top speed.
Locking the door from the inside, Shen Lai leaned against it, pressing a hand to her chest.
Why was her heart beating so fast?
She couldn’t help but blame Pei Jingyan, it was definitely because he had gotten too close that she’d become so flustered.
Downstairs, in the living room.
“Is it true? Did they really kiss?” Yin Ningjing asked skeptically.
The servant replied, “It’s true. I saw with my own eyes, Young Master Pei pinned Miss Shen on the bed and kissed her. It was really intense.”
Yin Ningjing’s expression darkened. Had she been overthinking things?
Pei Kaifeng spoke up, “Now do you believe me? I told you our son isn’t a fool, how could he just let himself be tricked?”
Though Yin Ningjing still felt something was off, the servant had witnessed it firsthand. It seemed the two really were together.
Even if she thought Shen Lai wasn’t good enough for her son, the two already had a child. There was no point in opposing it now.
Not long after, Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai came downstairs. The latter’s face was slightly flushed, her lips moist, clearly, something had happened in the room.
Seeing Shen Lai’s expression, Yin Ningjing became even more convinced of the servant’s account.
After breakfast, Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai left the estate.
The moment they returned to the villa, Shen Lai had just stepped out of the car when a soft, delicate voice called from behind, “Lai Lai.”
Shen Lai turned to see Bai Hansui standing not far away, her face pale, looking as if a gust of wind might knock her over.
Shen Lai frowned.
Why was Bai Hansui here now?
Before she could ponder further, Bai Hansui had already approached. She looked like she hadn’t slept all night, her eyes bloodshot with heavy dark circles. Without makeup, she appeared utterly haggard.
Then Shen Lai noticed the people with cameras trailing behind Bai Hansui.
Her brow twitched slightly, her tone icy. “What do you want?”
Bai Hansui’s eyes were red at the corners. “Lai Lai, what happened before was my fault. I shouldn’t have framed you.”
Shen Lai remained expressionless. “Did you come here today just to apologize?”
Biting her lower lip, Bai Hansui nodded earnestly. “I didn’t mean to. I just didn’t know what to do, I wasn’t thinking clearly at the time, so I blamed you.”
“I’ve realized my mistake now. Please forgive me this once, okay?”
Shen Lai laughed. “Miss Bai, do you really think a simple apology is enough to smooth things over? If no one had spoken up for me back then, wouldn’t I be the one getting cyberbullied now?”
Bai Hansui bit her lip hard, staring at Shen Lai’s cold expression. As if steeling herself, she suddenly bent her knees and dropped to the ground with a thud, kneeling.
Shen Lai’s frown deepened. “What are you doing?”
Tears welled in Bai Hansui’s eyes, her voice choked with sobs. “Lai Lai, I’ll do anything if you’ll just forgive me. Please, let me off this one time.”
[Damn! Bai Hansui actually knelt and apologized!]
[Even though Bai Hansui was wrong to steal someone’s boyfriend, she’s already kneeling to apologize. Shouldn’t we just let it go?]
[Yeah, she must have genuinely changed.]
[Which Mother Mary convent did you escape from? Let me find someone to cyberbully you first, then I’ll kneel and apologize, hope you’ll forgive me too.]
For a while, the live stream was embroiled in heated debate over this. But after this incident, many people’s sympathies began tilting toward Bai Hansui’s side.
Shen Lai thought to herself, Bai Hansui’s move was truly clever, apologizing while kneeling, putting on a pitiful and helpless act. If she still refused to forgive Bai Hansui, it would make her look like the unreasonable one.
Just then, a lazy, deep voice sounded from behind.
“Seems the servants at home are getting lazier. Leaving such a huge pile of trash lying around without cleaning it up.”
