- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 57 - Even Getting Close to Trash Feels Dirty
After hitting a wall with Shen Lai, Bai Hansui had no choice but to call Huo Chilin in desperation.
Right now, only Huo Chilin could help her.
However, the phone rang for a long time without an answer, and subsequent calls went unanswered as well.
Left with no other option, Bai Hansui decided to visit Huo Chilin’s company in person.
“Hello, I’m here to see Chilin.”
In the past, whenever Bai Hansui came to the company, just mentioning Huo Chilin’s name would prompt the receptionist to escort her upstairs with utmost respect.
But today, the receptionist offered an apologetic smile. “Miss Bai, I’m sorry, but Mr. Huo is currently in a meeting and isn’t available to see you at the moment.”
Bai Hansui clenched her fists tightly.
Was Huo Chilin deliberately avoiding her?
Before, he would drop everything to see her the moment she arrived. Yet now, he was using such a flimsy excuse to brush her off.
Taking a deep breath, Bai Hansui forced herself to remain composed. “When will the meeting be over?”
The receptionist smiled politely. “That hasn’t been determined yet.”
In the past, Bai Hansui would have turned and left immediately. But now, knowing she still needed Huo Chilin’s help to solve her current predicament, she had no choice but to endure.
Stiffly, she managed a smile. “Then I’ll wait for him downstairs.”
“Of course.”
The lobby was bustling with people, and Bai Hansui’s presence stood out conspicuously. Many casts curious glances her way, as if wondering why Young Master Huo’s girlfriend was sitting alone in the lobby.
Bai Hansui lowered the brim of her hat, trying to minimize her visibility.
Time passed slowly. After what felt like an eternity, a familiar figure finally emerged from the private elevator.
Spotting Huo Chilin, Bai Hansui sprang to her feet. “Chilin!”
Hearing her voice, Huo Chilin turned. When he saw Bai Hansui, his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. “What are you doing here?”
Bai Hansui hurried over and looped her arm through his, her tone sweet and affectionate. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long. Is your meeting over?”
Huo Chilin subtly withdrew his arm, his voice cool. “What do you need?”
Bai Hansui’s hand froze mid-air, her expression stiffening. The undisguised indifference on Huo Chilin’s face made her heart clench.
Her voice softened pitifully. “Chilin, are you still angry with me?”
She tugged lightly at his sleeve. “I really didn’t mean to. The company forced me into it.”
In the past, Huo Chilin would have melted at Bai Hansui’s pitiful expression. But now, he felt nothing, no sympathy, no concern. Instead, Shen Lai’s face flashed through his mind.
Even when the Shen family went bankrupt, Shen Lai had never once shown weakness in front of him.
The thought made Bai Hansui’s tears suddenly seem grating.
“What exactly do you want from me?” Huo Chilin’s tone was colder than he realized.
Bai Hansui hesitated. Seeing his impatience, she bit her lower lip and whispered, “Chilin, I just went to see Lai Lai, but she still refuses to forgive me. Can you help me? Please ask her not to push me into a corner.”
Huo Chilin’s expression shifted slightly at the mention of Shen Lai. “You went to see Shen Lai?”
Bai Hansui didn’t notice the fleeting strangeness on Huo Chilin’s face. She nodded, looking pitiful as she said, “She probably misunderstands me too deeply, so she doesn’t think my apology is sincere. But I truly know I was wrong. I’m willing to make up for it in any way, as long as she can forgive me.”
Huo Chilin had been about to refuse, but upon hearing Shen Lai’s name, he changed his mind. His fingers, tucked in his pocket, twitched slightly. “I understand. I’ll handle it for you.”
Bai Hansui’s eyes lit up. “Really? You’ll really help me?”
Huo Chilin gave a low hum. “You should go back first. I have other matters to attend to.”
Bai Hansui felt a twinge of reluctance but, remembering she still needed Huo Chilin’s help with Shen Lai, she didn’t dare say more. Obediently, she nodded. “Alright, I’ll leave first then.”
After Bai Hansui left, the assistant beside him cautiously asked, “Young Master Huo, are you really going to help Miss Bai?”
Everyone knew that Shen Lai was now an artist under Polai Entertainment, backed by the Shen family and their elite legal team. Bai Hansui would have a hard time recovering from this.
Huo Chilin’s expression remained unchanged. “I bear some responsibility in this matter as well. It’s only natural for me to step in on her behalf.”
The assistant couldn’t shake the feeling that his boss was more interested in seeing Shen Lai than helping Bai Hansui. After all, Shen Lai now treated Huo Chilin like trash, recoiling at even the slightest proximity.
Meanwhile, back at the familiar villa, Shen Lai felt an unexpected sense of relief.
Strange, since this wasn’t even her home.
She mused that perhaps she had been too restrained at the Shen residence yesterday, which might explain this illusion.
With no filming scheduled for the day, Shen Lai took an early shower and went to bed. But just as she lay down, her phone rang, it was a call from the hospital caretaker.
Assuming it was a routine update about her mother, Shen Lai casually answered.
However, as soon as the call connected, the caretaker’s panicked voice came through. “Miss Shen, your mother suddenly fell unconscious. She’s in emergency treatment now.”
Shen Lai’s grip on the phone tightened, her heart lurching. “What did you say?”
“I don’t know what happened. I just stepped out to get some water, and when I came back, she had collapsed. The doctors are working on her now.”
Shen Lai immediately threw off the covers and rushed to the door, only to collide with Pei Jingyan.
Seeing her flustered state, Pei Jingyan’s brow furrowed slightly. “What’s wrong?”
Shen Lai’s voice trembled. “The hospital just called, my mother suddenly lost consciousness.”
As she hurried to leave, Pei Jingyan reached out and grasped her arm.
Shen Lai turned to look at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty.
Pei Jingyan said calmly, “I’ll go with you.”
Shen Lai froze.
She didn’t remember how she got into the car. By the time she regained her senses, she was already seated inside.
The neon lights of the city flickered past the window, casting a hazy glow over Pei Jingyan’s profile, accentuating his noble and striking features in the dim night.
Shen Lai pressed her lips together. “I could’ve just taken a taxi.”
This had nothing to do with Pei Jingyan. There was no need for him to accompany her.
Pei Jingyan’s long fingers tapped lightly on the steering wheel. “Consider it thanks for accompanying me to see my parents yesterday.”
Shen Lai murmured, “That was part of our agreement anyway.”
Then she turned to gaze out the window, her reflection in the glass mirroring her distant, troubled thoughts.
After her mother was hospitalized, her condition had remained relatively stable. It was unclear why she suddenly fainted.
Looking at Shen Lai’s distracted profile, Pei Jingyan, for once, refrained from mocking her. His gaze gradually deepened, and the car fell into silence.
When they finally arrived at the hospital, Shen Lai rushed to the emergency room entrance. The nurse informed her that her mother was still undergoing resuscitation, and the situation remained unclear for now.
Left with no choice, Shen Lai sat on the bench outside, her hands unconsciously twisting together, her entire body cold with dread.
Then, a warm, large hand suddenly rested on hers.
Shen Lai froze. She looked up to meet Pei Jingyan’s unfathomably deep eyes.
His voice was steady. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here with you.”
