- Chapter 5 - Doesn't Want Her to Suffer
Xu Fei noticed the CT report in the suit wearing woman’s hand.
Zhu Nianxi happened to answer her unspoken question. “Just came to get a checkup. I’m afraid of old injuries flaring up, so I’m staying overnight for observation.”
Yan Fu sized up the Beta in front of them with a look of vigilance.
She was an assistant from Zhu Nianxi’s maternal grandmother’s side, and her sole duty was to serve Zhu Nianxi.
“Nianxi, is she your classmate?”
Zhu Nianxi smiled very sweetly. “She is Xu Fei. We are friends.”
Friends.
Zhu Nianxi said they were friends…
Xu Fei’s mind drifted off for a split second.
Yan Fu politely greeted Xu Fei, but a second later, she looked back at Zhu Nianxi. “Nianxi, are we going to the ward now?”
“I hasn’t applied my medication yet,” Zhu Nianxi said suddenly. “Feifei, help me with it.”
Yan Fu reminded her, “This classmate’s family member is probably hospitalized here too.”
Zhu Nianxi’s eyes didn’t leave Xu Fei’s face for even half a second as she asked gently, “Is that so? Is it someone very important to you?”
Xu Fei replied immediately, “No.”
The Omega’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “Then Feifei can come and keep me company. Auntie Yan will handle things on your side.”
Yan Fu glanced at her young mistress, then followed her lead, saying, “Classmate, if you need anything, you can just let me know.”
This… doesn’t seem quite right…
Xu Fei was used to not troubling others.
However, Yan Fu gave her a sense of reassurance, as if to say, “No matter what you ask for, I can get it done.”
This kind of composure was something Zhu Nianxi possessed as well.
At that moment, Zhu Nianxi leaned against her shoulder, her tone sounding fragile. “I don’t want anyone else touching my leg…”
Xu Fei thought to herself. So it’s okay if it’s me?
Zhu Nianxi gave her the answer with her eyes.
Zhu Nianxi’s ward was located on a high floor of the inpatient department.
Stepping out of the elevator, Xu Fei thought she had arrived at an entirely different hospital.
Despite having the same floor area as a regular room, there was only one bed inside, and a sofa was placed near the window sill. On the other side stood a television, a table, and a small refrigerator, making it look like a star rated hotel.
Zhu Nianxi sat down on the sofa and patted the empty spot beside her. “Feifei, come over here.”
Just as they sat down, the Omega voluntarily pulled down her calf sock, revealing skin so fair it was dazzling.
Catching a glimpse of Xu Fei’s gaze, Zhu Nianxi chuckled softly. “Aren’t you going to apply the medicine?”
“Oh. Right, right.”
Xu Fei tried her best to control where she looked.
Zhu Nianxi’s eyes shifted slightly. “Hmm, this posture is indeed a bit inconvenient.”
What?
Immediately after, a weight landed on Xu Fei’s thighs. Zhu Nianxi had propped her leg up over them.
The Omega leaned back against the edge of the sofa, her chin slightly lifted, her pure black hair swaying right in front of Xu Fei.
“How about now? Is it convenient?”
“Convenient,” Xu Fei nodded, her face flushing red.
The bruise was on her calf. Zhu Nianxi turned slightly, her suit jacket hanging open, revealing a supple and slender waist cinched by her pleated skirt.
In truth, this ointment could easily be applied by oneself, so Xu Fei didn’t think Zhu Nianxi had any ulterior motives. The young mistress was just pampered, there was no need for her to do everything personally.
Once the medicine was applied, Zhu Nianxi immediately withdrew her leg in a poised and elegant manner, validating Xu Fei’s thoughts.
“Feifei, help me hand over my bag.”
Without a second thought, Xu Fei did as she was told.
“Thank you.”
Zhu Nianxi raised her hands to tie her hair into a low ponytail. Her long eyelashes drooped, making her look very obedient.
The Omega was in a good mood, humming a song as she took her stationery out of her bag one by one, arranging them neatly.
Just then, Yan Fu walked in and said to Zhu Nianxi, “Nianxi, I brought it over.”
Without even raising her head, Zhu Nianxi kept her long eyelashes lowered, unhurriedly adjusting the placement angle of her exam papers.
“Just put it here.”
A pure black crossbody bag was placed on the table.
The bag had a plain design; one of its two zippers was broken, and the edges were covered in scuff marks, showing it had been used for a very long time.
This was Xu Fei’s bag, which had originally been left in Shang Hong’s ward.
Seeing the Omega raise her hand as if she wanted to help organize her things too, Xu Fei snapped out of it and hurriedly said, “Nianxi, there’s no need!”
Zhu Nianxi tilted her face up, asking in confusion, “Feifei, aren’t you going to do your homework?”
Xu Fei said meekly, “I should head back.”
The relaxed expression on Zhu Nianxi’s face vanished instantly.
“Oh,” she pursed her lips, her eyes filled with disappointment. “I thought you were going to stay with me…”
Xu Fei’s heart sank.
Did Zhu Nianxi get sad?
After all, not everyone was like her, completely used to being alone. Zhu Nianxi was so popular at school, so it was only normal for her to need companionship more.
Besides, Xu Fei didn’t want to see Shang Hong at all.
The cushion beside the sofa dipped. Xu Fei still felt self-conscious, sitting very straight and not daring to look at Zhu Nianxi too much.
“I’ll stay with you.”
Zhu Nianxi curved her lips into a smile. “Thank you, Feifei.”
Xu Fei covered her face with her hand, giving a soft “Mm.”
In the past, she always did her homework in private KTV rooms at the bar. It was rare to have no music and no smell of alcohol around her. Listening to the hum of the medical equipment, Xu Fei unconsciously settled her mind.
Whenever she encountered a question she couldn’t solve, Xu Fei automatically skipped it. She couldn’t understand them, nor did she see the necessity of understanding them.
Her life goal was very unambitious. Graduate from high school, attend an ordinary university, find an ordinary job, and live out an ordinary life entirely on her own.
Zhu Nianxi finished her homework early, quietly narrowing the distance between the two of them.
She really is a Beta, she has no pheromones.
Even when leaning this close, she could only smell a faint scent of soap.
The Omega’s gaze shifted from the Beta’s profile to her homework sheet.
Zhu Nianxi twitched the corner of her mouth.
Her answers are so cute.
After painstakingly filling out all her homework sheets, Xu Fei stretched out, loosening her stiff shoulders and neck.
My condition was great today, I should have gotten a lot of them right!
The space beside her was now empty.
Zhu Nianxi was standing in front of the ward’s French window, wearing only a white shirt and a pleated skirt. Her silhouette from behind looked lonely. The beautiful, dazzling cityscape outside served as nothing more than a backdrop for the Omega at this moment.
She turned around. “Finished writing?”
“Yeah,” Xu Fei nodded.
“Let’s get some rest.”
“Huh?!” Xu Fei was shocked, asking hesitantly, “Here…?”
Zhu Nianxi didn’t see anything wrong with it. “This bed can fit two people.”
Yan Fu entered the room at the perfect time, holding two sets of toiletries in her hands. She couldn’t hold back and stole another glance at Xu Fei, her gaze filled with a deeply unreadable meaning.
Xu Fei’s face instantly burned hot. She didn’t dare to imagine what Yan Fu must be thinking of her.
“I really have to go back!”
Xu Fei quickly packed her backpack and ran out of the ward.
The Omega stared intently at her departing figure.
Through the crack of the door, Xu Fei waved her hand at Zhu Nianxi. “Zhu Nianxi, see you tomorrow.”
“Mm,” Zhu Nianxi raised her head, her eyes curving into crescents, her smile gentle and harmless. “Goodbye, Feifei.”
Xu Fei hugged her bag and ran back.
Zhu Nianxi is such a nice person.
The door closed.
The smile on Zhu Nianxi’s face vanished inch by inch, and within a few breaths, her entire demeanor turned icy cold.
Yan Fu was well-accustomed to this. “Are we still staying in the hospital?”
“No,” Zhu Nianxi shook her head.
There was no need for it in the first place.
On the drive home, Yan Fu was concentrating on the road when she was suddenly called out to.
“Auntie Yan.”
She raised her head, locking eyes with the young mistress through the rearview mirror.
“Think of another way.”
Zhu Nianxi’s expression was cold, half of her face blending into the night, her eyes entirely dark. “I don’t want her to suffer.”
When Xu Fei returned to her ward, the caregiver hadn’t left yet.
Upon learning that Yan Fu had only paid for today’s wages, she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Fortunately, she hadn’t let Zhu Nianxi spend too much money.
Shang Hong remained silent the entire time, accepting the care of the worker and Xu Fei.
Sleeping on a rented camp bed that night, Xu Fei tossed and turned, then opened WeChat.
Just a moment ago, she and Zhu Nianxi had added each other as friends.
Zhu Nianxi’s profile picture was a silly, smiling Pomeranian with white fur, a round face, and eyes like black grapes, looking incredibly goofy.
Did she raise it herself?
Xu Fei tapped the profile picture, her finger gently poking the Pomeranian’s face. She hadn’t expected her to like this kind of thing.
So cute.
Unfortunately, Zhu Nianxi didn’t have any posts on her Moments. Xu Fei stared at the profile picture studying it for a good while before shutting off her phone.
Today felt like a dream to Xu Fei.
A lot of things had happened, but lying in bed, her mind was filled only with Zhu Nianxi. All kinds of different Zhu Nianxis.
Tonight was better than Xu Fei had expected. The caregiver worked until the next morning; with her help, Xu Fei didn’t suffer much.
Shang Hong was still asleep. Xu Fei cast a glance at her, choosing not to think about how difficult it must be for her to be alone. Pitying her would just be bullying herself.
After washing up, Xu Fei changed into her school uniform and went to school.
All the scores for the school opening exams were out.
Arriving at the classroom, the students in the class were discussing their respective rankings. Being able to enter Huaiyang High School meant that the students all held at least some expectations for themselves. Even if some students were laid-back, their parents would still care deeply.
After calculating her total score, Tao Yaqian slumped onto her desk in utter despair.
“It’s over, I didn’t do well in math and physics. My mom is going to scold me to death, I’m going to have to go to cram school again.”
While Xu Fei comforted her, she couldn’t control the envy blooming in her heart. She hadn’t done well in physics either this time, getting a raw score of 46, which became 61 after the grading curve, narrowly passing.
Yet no one would scold her, and no one would drag her by her ears to go to tutoring.
The ranking sheet was placed on the podium by Li Qin.
During the break, batch after batch of students went up to copy down their total scores and rankings, and they all tactfully looked toward Zhu Nianxi. Unanimously, everyone’s eyes were filled with absolute reverence.
Xu Fei went to take a look too. When she returned to her seat, she couldn’t help but look at the Omega a few more times.
Ah, what is it that’s shining so brightly?
Turns out it was Zhu Nianxi’s report card.
Chinese: 134, Math: 150, English: 145, Physics: 100 (98), Chemistry: 100 (96), Biology: 100 (94)
Grade Ranking: 1
Ning Siyi was secretly laughing at her seat. She could finally see the expressions of other people questioning their entire existence. It was worth it.
During the long break, the physics teacher had already graded yesterday’s homework and asked the class representative to hand it out.
Xu Fei was highly anticipating it. She felt that she had performed exceptionally well last night, sitting next to the rank one student surely provided some sort of buff, right?
She received her homework book and opened it confidently.
Silence.
She took another look.
She had only gotten one multiple-choice question right. All the open-ended questions were completely wrong.
To spare the student’s self-esteem, the physics teacher had specifically singled out the formulas, drawing checkmarks for Xu Fei. A total of four checkmarks, for three formulas.
Xu Fei felt so hurt. Why was physics so hard?
“Feifei?”
Zhu Nianxi turned around, holding the homework that was being passed backward.
Noticing the Omega’s gaze shifting downward, Xu Fei immediately sat up straight, stretching out both hands in a desperate attempt to cover her physics homework.
“What is it?” The tips of Xu Fei’s ears burned.
She didn’t see it, right?
How embarrassing.
Tao Yaqian gave her a strange look, taking the homework to pass it along.
Fortunately, the Omega didn’t pay attention. She smiled at Xu Fei, then turned back to seriously organize her notes.
Ever since Zhu Nianxi came to Class 7, the frequency of Xu Fei getting nervous had risen sharply.
As school was about to let out, she suddenly received a WeChat message.
[Xu Shaobin]: Come straight to the hospital after school.
She really wanted to read it and leave it on read.
Xu Fei stared at her desk for a few seconds. Remembering the unsigned forms in her bag, she still typed out a reply.
[Understood]
The last period today was physics. After this class, there was only one self-study period before school dismissed.
During the physics class, the teacher explained the exam paper. Xu Fei listened very attentively, but there were still some questions she couldn’t wrap her head around.
Once the period ended, her brain felt bloated enough to explode.
Just as she wanted to lie down, the physics teacher called her to the office.
Inside the office, the teacher spread out the exam paper covered in red crosses, staring at it with a frown.
Xu Fei lowered her head, looking at the tips of her shoes which had been washed until they turned white, not daring to look at the teacher or the paper.
A sigh came from above her head.
The physics teacher closed the book. “Xu Fei, tell the teacher honestly, can you usually understand everything during class?”
Xu Fei answered honestly, “Some things I understand, some things I don’t.”
Teacher: “If you don’t understand, you have to clarify it. Put in more effort after class.”
The student in front of her listened attentively without talking back, but she didn’t voice her own opinions either. She was like a pebble, dusty, silent, and closed off, completely lacking the brilliance of someone her age.
Then again, given her family situation…
A thought surfaced in the teacher’s mind. Perhaps scoring like this was already Xu Fei’s absolute limit.
Xu Fei kept her head lowered, reading right through the teacher’s silence.
Being scolded and managed, in many instances, equated to expectations and confidence. It was something Xu Fei yearned for, yet could never possess. Gradually, she stopped thinking about it.
Seeing the physics teacher’s face full of worry, Xu Fei muttered softly, “Teacher, I’ll head back first.”
“I haven’t finished speaking yet, what’s your rush?”
The physics teacher went back to looking at the exam paper. The exam this time was difficult with very few basic questions, and Xu Fei had filled them all in correctly to achieve a 46. She decided to struggle a little longer.
“Xu Fei, go back and organize your incorrect questions today. Once you’re done, bring the correction notebook for me to see.”
“If there’s anything you don’t know how to do, ask…” The teacher searched her mind for a suitable candidate.
A wisp of rose fragrance quietly approached.
“If there’s anything she doesn’t know, she can ask me.”
Xu Fei snapped her head around.
Zhu Nianxi was standing beside her, her smile melting into the early autumn sunlight. The young girl’s smile was tender, her pure black eyes shining like bright stars.
As the evening breeze blew into the room, Xu Fei heard the sound of everything in the world coming to life.
