- Chapter 14 - The Alpha's Susceptible Period (Rut)
Yan Fu moved quickly.
She strictly followed Zhu Nianxi’s instructions to keep things low-profile and natural, making sure not to place any psychological burden on Xu Fei.
But even so, when she showed up at the bar dressed in a high-end, tailored suit, she still attracted a lot of attention.
The door of the Maybach swung open, and everyone finally realized who was sitting inside.
The bartender’s jaw nearly hit the floor. “Sister Mei, where on earth did you find Xu Fei?!”
Mei Qia rubbed her temples. “Don’t ask me, I have no idea either.”
On the other side of the vehicle, Yan Fu kept a close eye on the back seat through the rearview mirror.
Xu Fei sat up straight, forcing herself not to stare out the window. She didn’t want to look completely unsophisticated in front of Zhu Nianxi.
Before her family’s tragedy, her household in Yanjing was considered comfortably middle-class. Her mother worked as a senior translator, and her father was a corporate executive. The two had met in college, stayed in Yanjing after graduation to build their lives, and owned both a house and a car. Although they had a mortgage to pay off every month, their combined income was more than enough, and they could afford to give Xu Fei an education that was just as good as any of her peers.
In middle school, Xu Fei attended an international school, where many of her classmates came from affluent backgrounds. She was frequently invited over to play at their houses, so she considered herself someone who had seen a bit of the world.
Yet, when she stepped out of the car and faced the detached villa, her eyes widened in astonishment.
The interior rewrote her entire understanding of wealth, it looked like a manor straight out of a fairy tale.
It suited Zhu Nianxi perfectly.
During the ride over, Zhu Nianxi had also been thinking. She considered whether she should bring Xu Fei to one of her other properties, a smaller one. But on second thought, she decided against it. She wanted to prevent Xu Fei from misinterpreting the situation and saying things like, “Will this be too much trouble for you?” again.
It only irritated her.
Xu Fei was assigned to the room right next to Zhu Nianxi’s. The two rooms shared a wall and had a similar layout. Before Xu Fei arrived, no one had lived in this room for years.
The doctor arrived and gave a preliminary diagnosis that mirrored Mei Qia’s: it was just a common cold. After Zhu Nianxi exchanged a few words with the doctor, a vial of Xu Fei’s blood was drawn.
Xu Fei was still wearing her bar uniform. She felt incredibly self-conscious as she noticed the eyes of several staff members in the villa drifting toward her.
Zhu Nianxi caught her wandering, uneasy gaze and melted it away with a soft smile. “Are you tired? Go ahead and rest then. You still have school tomorrow.”
Once everyone left, the massive room was cut down to just the two of them.
Xu Fei watched as Zhu Nianxi went to draw the curtains. The movement looked like someone covering a precious collectible with a cloth, sealing it away from the eyes of the outside world.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Nianxi, why are you being so good to me?”
Zhu Nianxi turned around. Starlight seemed to scatter across her pure black, peach-blossom eyes as she teased, “How does this count as being good to you? I’m merely doing what you did for me.”
They couldn’t equate the two.
“But you’re also helping me with my studies.” Xu Fei remembered something else. “And that time at the hospital, you helped me then too.”
Zhu Nianxi tilted her head. “But didn’t you inject me with an inhibitor?”
How did that even count…
Xu Fei wanted to list more examples of the Omega’s kindness, but Zhu Nianxi had already stepped up right in front of her.
She was 5cm shorter than Xu Fei, yet her gaze carried the weight of someone looking down.
Sensing that Zhu Nianxi didn’t want her to speak further, Xu Fei closed her mouth, using a pair of clear, innocent eyes to project her confusion.
“Xu Fei, do you want to break even with me?”
The Omega’s hand dropped, her fingertips brushing lightly across Xu Fei’s forehead.
The briefest touch sent a wave of numbness straight through Xu Fei’s scalp.
Zhu Nianxi murmured, “Let me tell you something, we can’t break even.”
“It’s time for bed.” Taking a step back, Zhu Nianxi curled her lips into a smile, hiding her brief display of intensity beneath a flawless exterior. “Feifei, have a good dream.”
The next day, it was only natural that the two of them went to school together.
When they were just one street away from the campus, Xu Fei suddenly spoke up. “Aunt Yan, could you pull over here for a moment?”
Yan Fu looked toward Zhu Nianxi through the mirror.
Zhu Nianxi lowered her eyelashes. “If you don’t want people to see you arriving with me, then of course you can.”
Xu Fei froze. “It’s not that.”
She was just afraid of being seen, which would make things difficult to explain. She didn’t want others to find out how they had actually met.
“It’s fine,” Zhu Nianxi spoke up. “Pull over.”
Yan Fu did as she was told.
Xu Fei stood on the pavement, watching the car drive away.
Fortunately, during their midday tutoring session, Zhu Nianxi didn’t show any signs of displeasure. Maybe she doesn’t really care, Xu Fei thought to herself.
News that Class 7 had a badminton prodigy quickly spread to the surrounding classrooms. During PE class, when Xu Fei and Qin Weiran were playing, a crowd of students even gathered nearby to watch.
Qin Weiran was introverted by nature and wasn’t used to being the center of attention. She guessed that Xu Fei felt the same way.
“I’m sorry. I only told a few friends. I didn’t think it would spread like this.”
Xu Fei was bending down to pick up a shuttlecock with her racket. Hearing this, she smiled. “It’s fine.”
When she played, she transformed into a completely different person. Even if it was just for fun, her attitude remained entirely focused. Pouring her heart into the game, a sense of pure earnestness radiated from her bones, making it impossible for people to look away.
Ultimately, to accommodate Qin Weiran, they moved to a different spot, an open space behind the academic building.
After playing for over ten minutes, the two sat down on a roadside bench to rest.
Out of the corner of her eye, Qin Weiran noticed Xu Fei hovering her head over something. Driven by curiosity, she leaned over to look.
She was stunned.
Xu Fei was memorizing classical poetry! She held a small slip of paper, and by the looks of it, she had copied the poems down herself.
Qin Weiran gasped, “Xu Fei, you are so hardworking! Just like Jian Zhixing!”
Unlike Zhu Nianxi, who always had a legitimate reason to miss class, Jian Zhixing would fake an illness to skip PE. If she absolutely couldn’t get out of it, she would show up for attendance, sneak away to study, and then return just in time for the final roll call.
Xu Fei felt a bit embarrassed. “My dictation was terrible, so the teacher told me to redo it.”
Her “teacher” was none other than Zhu Nianxi.
“Oh,” Qin Weiran murmured, her gaze shifting from admiration to sympathy.
The early autumn afternoon sun was just right. Looking at Xu Fei’s calm and focused profile, Qin Weiran suddenly asked.
“Xu Fei, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Did you play tennis in middle school?” Fearing the other girl might overthink, Qin Weiran quickly added, “Sometimes your grip on the racket looks a lot like a tennis grip.”
Xu Fei froze for a few seconds. It had been a very long time since she had talked about her past with anyone.
“Yeah. I started playing tennis when I was six years old.”
So, what Tao Yaqian said wasn’t entirely fabricated.
An internal battle waged inside Qin Weiran’s mind. Looking into Xu Fei’s unguarded eyes, she finally couldn’t hold it back anymore.
“Do you and Tao Yaqian know each other from before? She’s been saying things behind your back…”
“I know.”
Unexpectedly, Xu Fei cut her off. She lowered her head and let out a bitter laugh. “I know everything.”
Qin Weiran didn’t understand. “Then why do you still act like her friend?”
Xu Fei sank into a brief silence.
When she first arrived at Huai High, she didn’t know a single soul. Her state of mind was completely different from before, and she had no desire to strike up conversations, pouring all her energy into her crumbling life instead.
And then, Tao Yaqian had approached her.
“Xu Fei, is it really you?” Tao Yaqian had looked her up and down, her eyes flashing with a complex mix of emotions. “You’ve… turned out like this now, huh.”
They hadn’t been close in the past, but after entering high school, they became “friends” who couldn’t truly be called friends.
Xu Fei looked up at the sky.
Yeah, why?
Probably because… I didn’t want to be alone.
Qin Weiran didn’t push any further.
The sound of a whistle blowing echoed from the sports field. It was time to assemble. The two of them stood up, but before they could take more than a couple of steps, another figure stepped out from behind a large tree nearby.
“Class Monitor!” Qin Weiran stared at Jian Zhixing. “What are you doing here?”
Jian Zhixing replied in a flat voice, “I’ve been here the whole time. You two arrived after me.”
Qin Weiran noticed the physics exam paper in her hand and immediately understood.
On the way back to the field, Jian Zhixing kept her eyes glued to the paper. Qin Weiran maintained a respectful distance, silently stepping aside so she wouldn’t disturb the top student’s train of thought.
Xu Fei, however, walked closer and managed to catch a glimpse of the problem that was troubling Jian Zhixing.
“This question is testing the work energy theorem.”
A few seconds of absolute silence followed.
Jian Zhixing reread the question. It actually was.
She adjusted her glasses, and the look she directed at Xu Fei instantly shifted. It was a gaze that clearly said. I underestimated you before.
Xu Fei hurriedly explained, “I didn’t know how to solve it at first either! Nianxi just explained it to me during lunch!”
“Nianxi is…” Qin Weiran hesitated. “Zhu Nianxi?”
Xu Fei nodded, passionately praising her, “She’s a really great person.”
“But don’t you think she feels incredibly distant?” Qin Weiran rubbed her arms, acting as if the mere mention of Zhu Nianxi’s name gave her the chills. “I don’t dare get close to her.”
Jian Zhixing offered a rational analysis. “People who are too perfect tend to place a subconscious burden on others. Not to mention her family background is extraordinary.”
“Exactly, she’s a wealthy young lady!” Qin Weiran felt like she had found an ally and started chattering away. “Isn’t everyone in class like that? They only dare to exchange polite pleasantries, no one dares to actually sit next to her.”
Xu Fei opened her mouth to say something but stopped herself. She lowered her head, making the fallen leaves rustle loudly under her feet.
It’s not like that at all.
Suddenly, Qin Weiran went dead silent, her eyes locking onto a figure in the distance.
Zhu Nianxi happened to be walking out of the academic building. Her gaze drifted over, pausing briefly on the three girls walking side by side. Without greeting anyone, she walked alone toward the administration building.
Xu Fei’s gland suddenly throbbed with a sharp pain.
Her heart ached.
During the next few afternoon classes, Zhu Nianxi’s slender, fragile silhouette refused to leave Xu Fei’s mind. She couldn’t stop thinking about how Zhu Nianxi had looked in the car that morning.
She wanted to explain things clearly. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to be seen with her; she was just afraid…
Xu Fei held her pen, aimlessly drawing circles on her paper. What’s the best way to explain it?
Had she made Zhu Nianxi feel lonely too?
Determined to clear up the misunderstanding as soon as possible, Xu Fei couldn’t even wait for school to end and quickly wrote a note during their self-study period.
Just then, someone knocked on the door of Class 7. An unfamiliar student stood at the entrance.
“Student Council meeting.”
Zhu Nianxi stood up, picked up her notebook and pen, and left the classroom under Xu Fei’s longing gaze.
It’s fine, Xu Fei comforted herself. The meeting shouldn’t take too long.
Half an hour passed.
School was officially dismissed.
The school grounds, both inside and outside the classroom, grew noisy.
Because Zhu Nianxi wasn’t around, Xu Fei’s strange condition showed signs of flaring up again. The symptoms grew more pronounced with every passing minute the Omega was away.
Qin Weiran walked past the back door. “Xu Fei, aren’t you going home?”
Xu Fei shook her head. “I’m going to stay a bit longer.”
She wanted to wait for Zhu Nianxi to return.
A few minutes later, her phone buzzed with a message from Zhu Nianxi.
Zhu Nianxi: Go home first. Yan Fu is outside waiting in a different car, so you don’t have to worry.
Xu Fei felt a sharp pang of guilt in her heart.
Xu Fei: Nianxi, I’ll wait for you.
She wasn’t sure if the Omega had read it, as she didn’t receive a reply.
The night grew darker, and the students taking evening self-study returned to the classroom one after another, but Zhu Nianxi was still nowhere to be seen.
How could a meeting take this long?
Since she didn’t know anyone else on the student council, she could do nothing but wait. Reaching into her bag, she was relieved to find the bread Zhu Nianxi had given her at noon. Munching on the bread, Xu Fei didn’t move from her seat, focusing all her attention on tackling her homework problems.
Meanwhile, in the administration building.
A teacher noticed the dark sky outside and reminded the remaining student, “Nianxi, aren’t you heading back?”
The meeting had just wrapped up, and all the other students had already left. Only Zhu Nianxi remained, sitting entirely by herself.
Zhu Nianxi checked her phone screen.
Yan Fu: She hasn’t come out yet.
She’s really still waiting?
The corners of Zhu Nianxi’s mouth twitched up slightly. She couldn’t tell if she felt happy or just incredibly stubborn.
This morning, the girl clearly didn’t want to be seen with her. Yet, later, she was laughing and chatting happily with another Omega.
Hmph.
She tucked her phone away and flashed a brilliant smile at the teacher. “Goodbye, Teacher. I’m heading back to class now.”
Evening self-study had already commenced, and the entire campus was blanketed in a peaceful silence.
As Zhu Nianxi walked leisurely down the corridor, her phone rang again.
This time, it was the doctor. Xu Fei’s blood test results were finally out.
“Miss Zhu, there are indeed traces of Alpha pheromones in the sample, but the amount is exceptionally minuscule and highly unstable.”
“Our previous diagnosis was incorrect.”
“Based on the symptoms you described, the patient’s condition aligns much more closely with an Alpha’s susceptible period (rut).”
“A rut?” Zhu Nianxi pondered the words.
“It could be due to severe malnutrition during her development phase, or perhaps a genetic anomaly that prevented a normal differentiation, causing her to be misidentified as a Beta.”
Zhu Nianxi asked, “Will she differentiate into an Alpha?”
The doctor paused. “The probability is very low.”
“Most people cannot undergo a secondary differentiation. Once you miss the window, you miss it for good. They remain a Beta for the rest of their lives.”
“Is there any way?”
Zhu Nianxi stepped onto the stairs.
The doctor didn’t find the question suspicious. She had encountered this scenario far too many times, parents of Betas, or the Betas themselves, asking around for any possible method the moment they heard there was even a shred of hope for a secondary differentiation. If there was a chance to become an Alpha, they would resort to any means necessary.
There was only one relatively safe method.
“Using the pheromones of a high-grade Omega to induce differentiation. The higher the rank of the Omega, the higher the success rate.”
However, this method carried a massive drawback that could not be ignored.
Zhu Nianxi reached the floor where Class 7 was located. Instead of entering immediately, she walked over to the window right next to Xu Fei’s desk and tapped on the glass.
The Beta was visibly startled, her eyes widening as she looked out at her like a frightened rabbit.
Zhu Nianxi let out a genuine laugh, a wave of profound delight washing over her.
It wasn’t just because of Xu Fei. It was also because of the warning words the doctor had given her.
“Medically, we don’t recommend this. Once induced differentiation occurs, the pheromones of both individuals will become completely bound at a physiological level.”
“This bond is far more unbreakable than natural compatibility. After all, one party’s presentation was literally born because of the other.”
“You must consider this with absolute caution.”
Zhu Nianxi hung up the phone.
She stepped into the classroom, locked her eyes onto Xu Fei, and deliberately asked in a clear, carrying voice, “Xu Fei, are you waiting for me?”
Her voice caused everyone in the classroom to snap their heads around to look at the pair, with all eyes landing directly on Xu Fei.
Xu Fei’s face instantly flushed crimson. She nodded, “Yeah.”
Finally catching her opportunity, she hurriedly tried to explain, “Nianxi, this morning, I…”
“You don’t need to say it,” Zhu Nianxi smiled warmly, cutting her off. “Feifei, let’s go home.”
