- Divorcing and Returning Home with My Child to Inherit a Billion-Dollar Fortune
- Chapter 3 - Two Months of Cold Violence, Driving One Mad
Qi Ji drew in a sharp breath and remained silent for a long time before speaking in an incredibly firm tone. “We will. We’ve known each other since we were kids; it’s not the kind of relationship you can just walk away from.”
“Then, what do I need to do?” Lu Ming clenched his hands together, his fingertips turning white from the pressure. “Do I need to explain things to him?”
“I’ve already explained it to him,” Qi Ji replied, though the results hadn’t been great.
Looking at his expression, Lu Ming could guess the outcome. He didn’t know what kind of person He Zhaolin was or what he was thinking, but for an Omega with an existing engagement to be forced into marriage and pregnancy with someone else, perhaps it truly required a powerful heart to accept.
“When he returns to the country, I’ll explain it to him properly again,” Lu Ming said resolutely, offering Qi Ji a bit of confidence. “If he loves you, I think he will eventually understand and accept it.”
On Tuesday, Qi Ji pushed back a morning meeting to drive to the airport and pick up He Zhaolin personally. Seeing him emerge from the exit in the distance, the smile that had just begun to form on Qi Ji’s face vanished the moment he saw the Omega beside him. Qi Ji’s hands dropped to his sides, clenched into fists, his expression becoming terrifyingly stern.
He Zhaolin was pushing two large suitcases as he strode toward Qi Ji. “You’re here? I told you there was no need to pick me up; I could have just called a driver.”
“Who is he?”
He Zhaolin appeared perfectly natural and open. “You don’t remember him? This is Uncle Zhou’s youngest son, Zhou Ziang. He’s studying violin abroad. Uncle Zhou asked me to look after him, and since our return dates coincided, we just bought tickets together.”
Sensing Qi Ji’s hostility, Zhou Ziang looked aggrieved and silently took his luggage back from He Zhaolin. “Brother Zhaolin, I’ll take my own bags. I don’t want Brother Qi Ji to misunderstand.”
He Zhaolin smiled, returned the luggage, and explained on Qi Ji’s behalf. “Your Brother Qi Ji isn’t that petty. I dislike Omegas who spend all day being jealous and bitter; if he were that type, we couldn’t have been together for so many years. Right, Qi Ji?”
“Yes.” Qi Ji’s fists tightened further. He felt so irritable. Why was he so restless and stifled?
Qi Ji dropped Zhou Ziang off first before taking He Zhaolin home. After two hours of driving, he felt exhausted; it was 11:00 AM, and he still had to rush to the office to handle several important documents.
He Zhaolin sat in the passenger seat, not in a hurry to leave. He could smell the faint, sweet scent of bergamot on Qi Ji, untainted by any Alpha pheromones, which meant that Alpha hadn’t touched him recently.
“Do you want to talk now?” He Zhaolin asked.
“No. Go back and wash up. You’re covered in that Omega’s scent; it makes me feel sick.” It was the scent of fruit wine, and he couldn’t stand the smell of alcohol right now.
He Zhaolin’s brow furrowed deeply. “Ziang is a very simple child, and very well-behaved. Qi Ji, there’s no need for you to be so malicious toward him.”
“I am not being malicious.”
“You say that, but Ziang was so scared of you he couldn’t even speak. You’re making things very awkward for me.”
“Zhaolin, I don’t want to fight with you. I am already being patient.”
“Heh, patient? I remember you might have actually hit someone in the past, right? Why are you being patient now? Is it because you also feel that you’ve wronged me in this matter!”
Qi Ji took several deep breaths and buried his face against the steering wheel, his voice raspy. “Get out!”
“I’ve really had enough. Who else but me could put up with your temper? You’re like this every time; it’s impossible to communicate with you!” He Zhaolin angrily pushed the car door open, slammed it shut, and stormed into the elevator.
Qi Ji let out an angry roar and pounded the steering wheel until his knuckles were bruised and swollen. Drenched in sweat and feeling drained, he leaned back against the seat and closed his eyes, letting out a long sigh. He had been so happy at the thought of seeing him, but the actual meeting left him feeling depressed and physically uncomfortable.
Suddenly, a sharp, stabbing pain hit his lower abdomen. He was bleeding.
Qi Ji felt cold all over, a layer of cold sweat breaking out on his back. With trembling hands, he grabbed his phone and, without a second thought, instinctively called Lu Ming. He knew that in situations like this, only Lu Ming would be anxious, only Lu Ming would care if he lived or died. Calling anyone else would only invite ridicule.
Lu Ming had just finished changing the new sofa cushions at home when he received the call, feeling a sense of trepidation. “Mr. Qi, is there something wrong?”
“My stomach hurts.”
Qi Ji’s voice was incredibly weak, as if he were enduring immense pain. Lu Ming’s face turned pale instantly, but having undergone extensive training, he was able to calm down quickly in an emergency and make the right decision.
“Send me your location. Stay where you are and wait for me.”
Lu Ming rode his motorcycle like the wind. A trip that usually took forty minutes only took him ten. In his blurred state of pain, Qi Ji heard a tap on the car window; he forced himself to sit up and unlocked the doors.
Seeing Qi Ji so pale that his lips were white and covered in cold sweat, Lu Ming asked nothing. He picked him up and moved him to the passenger seat. The sight of a large bloodstain on the driver’s seat made Lu Ming’s heart tighten, but he focused his mind and drove toward the hospital.
The record for his last red-light violation had only just been cleared, yet this time he forgot to even call the authorities. He sped through several red lights to get to the emergency room before even remembering his violations. He thought his psychological resilience was good, but he had still panicked.
Fortunately, Qi Ji had a medical record at the hospital. Once his files were pulled, the doctors were able to administer the right treatment immediately. The bleeding was quickly stopped, and by 1:00 PM, he was moved to a VIP ward with an IV drip in his hand.
Lu Ming glanced at him before being called out of the room by the doctor.
“This is a threatened miscarriage. His situation is very specific, and the bleeding is difficult to stop. He needs to rest quietly; he cannot be overworked, and there should be no sexual activity.”
Lu Ming’s face reddened with embarrassment. “Yes, we haven’t.”
“Also, his emotions are very unstable. A pregnant Omega needs the comfort of an Alpha. Have you been providing pheromone soothing for him?”
Lu Ming looked troubled. “No.”
The doctor was speechless. “This is very important. His hormones are unstable right now. As his husband, you must take responsibility. Do you know how dangerous this situation is?”
“I understand. I will take responsibility.”
The doctor shook her head. She had seen too many cases like this and could only blame the Omega’s poor luck. Seeing Lu Ming push the door open and enter the ward, Qi Ji felt a rare sense of guilt. “Did the doctor scold you again?”
“It was my negligence for not providing pheromone soothing.”
Given the nature of their relationship, pheromone soothing was too awkward, so they had been putting it off.
“It has nothing to do with you. I just can’t control my own temper.”
Lu Ming knew he had gone to pick someone up at the airport today. He had wondered if letting him drive alone for that long was dangerous, but knowing they hadn’t seen each other in a long time, and seeing that he hadn’t even called a driver, Lu Ming assumed he wanted to be alone with that person. He had so much to say, so Lu Ming hadn’t followed. He hadn’t expected this result.
Lu Ming pulled up a chair and stayed by the bed to watch the IV drip. It was dripping so slowly; there were two more bottles after this one.
“Did you fight with him?” Lu Ming asked tentatively. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“I made the relationship tense again,” Qi Ji said with a face full of self-loathing. “I don’t know why it’s always like this.”
“Always like this?”
“Another Omega came back with him. He was carrying that Omega’s luggage, and I got angry and couldn’t hide it. I know he won’t fool around with others, but I was still angry. He felt I shouldn’t be angry either. I don’t know how to express that subtle… forget it, don’t worry about it. You should go back.”
Qi Ji turned away with a cluttered mind, closing his eyes in self-rejection.
“Is he always like this?”
“What?” Qi Ji opened his eyes and turned his head to ask.
“Does he always lack boundaries with other Omegas in front of you, and then blame you for being too petty? So, you also feel that you’re making a big deal out of nothing?”
“Then do you think I’m being too petty?”
Lu Ming felt that the man’s behavior was a bit trashy, but he couldn’t say it directly. “Don’t trust someone too much; maintaining that sensitivity is necessary. If someone always makes you angry, then why don’t you switch to someone who doesn’t?”
“I never thought about it.”
Well, Lu Ming wasn’t sure how thick the filter was that Qi Ji viewed this man through. At the very least, his emotions were easily swayed by him. The person involved is often blind, while the bystander sees clearly; that was likely the case here.
At that moment, Qi Ji’s WeChat notification sounded several times. Qi Ji took a look and irritably tossed the phone aside to avoid getting angry again.
“What did he say to you?”
“I’m not sure. If you’re curious, look for yourself.”
Lu Ming stared at him. “You want me to look?”
“Look if you want. It’s not like there’s anything to hide anyway.” With that, Qi Ji unlocked the phone and handed it to Lu Ming.
Lu Ming took the phone honestly; he actually really wanted to see. He scrolled up through the messages, tracing back to over two months ago, but he discovered that for those two months, there were only messages from Qi Ji. That man had ignored him the entire time. The last few messages were from just now, and they were also quite something.
He: I don’t know why we’ve come to this. My heart really hurts. I always think back to our time together in high school; it was so beautiful back then.
He: Actually, I’ve thought carefully about whether I can accept you being with someone else and having a child for another Alpha. Sometimes I think I’d rather we never knew each other and started as ordinary friends instead; it wouldn’t be so hard to accept.
He: Why aren’t you replying? Are you still angry about Ziang? After all these years, do you still not trust me? No matter how many Omegas appear around me, there has only ever been you.
Lu Ming felt a wave of nausea and locked the phone with undisguised disgust.
Cold violence for over two months, driving the person mad, returning with another Omega by his side, and now leaving messages saying his heart hurts and that it would be better to start as friends? He was truly a master. Before, Lu Ming felt he didn’t know the other man and couldn’t jump to conclusions; now, he only felt that Qi Ji’s childhood friend had a terrible character.
“He ignored you for over two months, so that’s why you were angry that night?”
“If you were me, what could you do?”
“Hmm…” Lu Ming’s eyes were clear, his smile harmless. “I wouldn’t message him. I would buy a plane ticket, fly over quietly, and give him a surprise.”
“He doesn’t like me doing that.”
“Then just go over quietly and watch him from the shadows. Prepare whatever he needs.”
“Is that really, okay?”
“Yes! Once he finds out, he’ll definitely be very moved.”
Qi Ji furrowed his brows and began to seriously consider this method. “Then I’ll do that next time.”
Lu Ming nodded in approval. “If you need help, just say the word. After all, you guys are like this because of me. Oh, right, didn’t you say you wanted to meet? Let’s take this chance to have a meal together and explain everything clearly. That way, you can start over without any resentment.”
