- Chapter 2 - Let’s Meet, and Bring That Alpha
“Calm down!” Lu Ming glared and shouted in a stern rebuke. Qi Ji was stunned by the roar. This kid; he actually dared to be fierce with him? How dare he? What right did he have to yell? Clearly, it was all his fault! The way he was now was entirely because of him.
“Get up!” Lu Ming didn’t care about the current situation. He had only one thought, which was that he had to get him to the hospital as soon as possible.
“Do you want to die? I told you not to touch me!” Although Qi Ji was furious, this was the harshest curse he could manage.
Lu Ming’s heart was in his throat, and his eyes were reddening. “If your bleeding doesn’t stop, you’ll die! Do you understand? Are you really twenty-six years old?”
Qi Ji was so angry he nearly spat blood. His stomach hurt, and everything felt uncomfortable. The next second, Qi Ji felt his body go light. He had actually been swept up into a bridal carry by the Alpha, who began walking out. They were about the same size, and Qi Ji usually worked out, so even though the Alpha looked lean, he didn’t expect him to pick him up and run without even losing his breath.
“Where are the car keys?” Lu Ming asked, carrying him to the first-floor lobby.
After a whole night of tossing and turning, Qi Ji had no strength left. His head lolled unconsciously as Lu Ming moved. He said weakly, “On the shoe cabinet.”
Lu Ming grabbed the keys, stuffed him into the passenger seat, and buckled his seatbelt. As Lu Ming got into the car, Qi Ji watched him coldly while he made a call.
“Hello, this is Lu Ming. My Omega spouse is injured. He has a blood coagulation disorder and needs to be rushed to the City Center Hospital for emergency treatment. We are in the car now and might run red lights. I hope you can record this. The license plate number is G20XXXX.”
Only after he hung up did Qi Ji realize he had called the emergency services. Qi Ji doubtfully raised his hand, glanced at the wound on his finger, then looked at Lu Ming and urged, “Drive faster. If we’re too late, I’m afraid the wound might heal itself.”
Lu Ming was speechless, muttering under his breath, “If it were that easy to heal, then thank heaven and earth.”
Qi Ji let out a strange laugh. After laughing, even he didn’t know what he was laughing at. Lu Ming, focused on overtaking cars and clearing traffic lights, didn’t notice that this was the first time in over three months that Qi Ji had looked at him and smiled.
For such a tiny wound, he really treated it like a major ordeal, overtaking cars until they reached the emergency room. Lu Ming accompanied him inside and watched the doctor re-dress the wound.
The doctor on the night shift was a female Omega. Being more detail-oriented, she couldn’t help but scold Lu Ming. “How are you looking after your Omega? He’s pregnant. Do you know how dangerous an injury is with a coagulation disorder? In this condition, not only did you fail to use contraception, but how could you let him get hurt during pregnancy?”
Lu Ming simply nodded in response. “I’m sorry, I didn’t take good care of him. It won’t happen again.”
“It has nothing to do with him,” Qi Ji sat blankly in the chair, his eyes unfocused. He explained expressionlessly, “I was losing my temper at home and throwing things. I hurt myself.”
Lu Ming was startled; he hadn’t expected him to explain that to the doctor.
The doctor looked embarrassed and offered a few words of advice. “You still need to control your emotions during pregnancy. Having such a big temper isn’t good for the baby. Alright, it’s handled. Keep it away from water for the next few days. Go home and sleep; it’s almost 2:00 AM.”
After picking up some topical medication, the two walked out of the hospital in silence, one behind the other.
Back at home, Lu Ming stopped Qi Ji as he headed for the stairs. “Sit in the lobby for a bit. I’ll go tidy up the room.”
Qi Ji paused, turned around, and sat silently on the sofa, leaning back with his eyes closed as if nothing mattered anymore. He just wanted to sleep now. Once he woke up, it wouldn’t hurt so much.
They had left in a hurry, so the lights in the room were still on. When Lu Ming entered and saw the mess on the floor, he let out a long, weary sigh. He really did have quite a temper. Everything in the room that could be smashed was smashed. How could an Omega have so much energy to cause such a ruckus? He had even managed to dent the tables and chairs.
Lu Ming carefully swept the glass shards into the bin and mopped the floor twice. Only after ensuring there were no glass splinters left did he return to the lobby, only to find that Qi Ji had fallen asleep against the sofa. He gently picked the Omega up, carried him back to the bedroom, pulled up the covers, and adjusted the room temperature to the most comfortable setting. Only then did he turn around, quietly close the door, and return to his own bedroom to sleep.
As the door clicked shut, Qi Ji turned over and slowly opened his eyes. He was clearly exhausted, yet sleep eluded him. This feeling was strange. In the past, whenever his negative emotions flared up, no one could control him, and he would be unable to escape that negativity for a long time. But this time, he had calmed down very quickly.
Why? After all that commotion, his mood actually felt lighter.
Because his live streams were paused, Lu Ming’s career had been sidelined by this marriage. The sudden free time made him feel a bit bored. The next day, he still woke up early. He fixed the broken decorative lights in the yard. Hearing the helper say the robot vacuum was broken, he borrowed an electric screwdriver and pliers from a neighbor and sat on the carpet alone, carefully disassembling it to check.
The circuit board was fried. Lacking tools, Lu Ming set the parts aside, thinking he would visit the hardware market after breakfast.
“Mr. Qi, you’re awake. Will you be having breakfast at home?”
Hearing the helper’s question, Lu Ming instinctively looked back, his expression slightly awkward. “Good morning.”
Qi Ji gave a lukewarm response and told the helper, “I’ll eat at home today.”
“Great! It’s being prepared; it’ll be ready soon.”
Lu Ming moved the disassembled robot vacuum to a corner and followed into the kitchen. A moment later, he brought out a glass of homemade lemon honey water and placed it by Qi Ji’s right hand. “If you’re still feeling nauseous, drink some of this.”
Qi Ji looked up and quietly observed him. “What were you messing with earlier?”
Lu Ming froze for two seconds. After confirming Qi Ji was speaking to him, he explained, “The robot vacuum is broken. I’m trying to fix it.” In truth, he was just so bored he wanted to find something interesting to do.
“Just buy a new one.” Qi Ji dismissed the idea, picking up the lemon honey water and taking a couple of sips. It wasn’t too sour and had a faint, fresh scent of honey. It tasted quite good.
Despite knowing each other for a while, this was the first time they had sat at the dining table together. Lu Ming took the eggs from the bowl and peeled two for Qi Ji. Qi Ji stared at the peeled hard-boiled eggs with a look of disdain. After an intense internal struggle, he reluctantly ate one, finished the lemon honey water, and stood up briskly. “I’m leaving.”
“Okay, be safe on the road.” Lu Ming watched him leave, picked up the remaining egg, stuffed it into his mouth, and helped the helper clear the table. He then changed his clothes, put on a mask, and headed out.
He went out in the morning and returned in the afternoon having bought a motorcycle for easy travel. His backpack was bulging. When the helper returned from grocery shopping, she saw Lu Ming in the yard using tools and wire to install lights. Previously, the yard only had four lanterns, and it was quite dim. Since Qi Ji always came home late, installing a few more lights was indeed safer.
After finishing the lights, he spent a few minutes fixing the robot vacuum. While the helper was prepping vegetables, he took ingredients he had bought earlier from the fridge and began simmering a nutritious soup following a recipe for pregnant Omegas.
The helper couldn’t help but remark, “You’re so good to Mr. Qi. I’ve worked as a domestic helper for several families before, and I’ve never seen an Alpha as patient and gentle as you.”
Lu Ming replied half-jokingly, “Right now, Mr. Qi is providing for me. I have to try my best to be well-behaved so I don’t get kicked out.”
That night, Qi Ji didn’t get home until 8:30 PM. He was still on the phone when he walked in, his voice suppressed and restrained. “He wants a 14% commission? He’s dreaming! If he signs, he signs; if not, forget it. Opening a few more marketing points across the country will easily make up for the sales volume lost from their shelves.”
He stepped inside and headed for the stairs. It wasn’t until he reached the second step that he realized sensor lights had been installed every two steps, extending all the way through the hallway. The lights were mostly warm-toned, and each one was a different shape: mushrooms, rabbits, birds, and dolphins. They looked quite interesting.
Qi Ji’s mood became complicated. He stopped at his door and turned to stare at the room at the end of the hallway for a long time. A faint yellow light seeped through the door crack. What was that kid doing in his room?
Just as the thought crossed his mind, the door opened. Lu Ming came out and their eyes met; both were stunned for a few seconds.
“Mr. Qi, I heard the car engine cut out, so I came to check.” Lu Ming walked toward him. “There’s chicken soup warming in the kitchen. I added some mild tonic herbs; it’s good for nourishment. Do you have an appetite? I’ll bring a bowl up.”
Qi Ji had hurriedly eaten a boxed meal for dinner, and his appetite had been ruined by those annoying work matters. At this hour, he actually was hungry. “Yes.”
“Go into your room and wait a moment.” With that, Lu Ming turned and ran downstairs.
While Lu Ming was getting the soup, Qi Ji received a message from He Zhaolin.
He: What have you been up to lately?
Qi Ji realized in hindsight that he hadn’t messaged He Zhaolin for three days.
Qi: It’s the middle of the night in Alaska, right? You’re not asleep?
He: I miss you. I’m so upset I can’t sleep.
Qi Ji’s hard-won composure seemed to experience a light drizzle again, feeling cold and damp.
Qi: Take care of yourself.
He: Is he good to you? Being marked by him must be very inconvenient, right? If he’s not good to you, you must tell me.
The “inconvenience” He Zhaolin referred to was how Alphas often used pheromones to control Omegas after marriage, or how those with poor character did whatever they pleased. Even though domestic violence was a crime, Omegas remained in a passive position in marriage in hidden corners.
Qi: He has a very stable temper.
Like a newly matured capybara, Qi Ji thought to himself.
He: I’m returning to the country next week.
Qi: Have you thought it over?
He: I don’t know. I only know I miss you so much right now. I don’t want to break up with you like this.
Qi: So, you want to stay together, but you still can’t accept this accident?
He: I just need time.
Qi: I’ll wait for you.
He: After I return, let’s meet. Bring that Alpha along too.
Qi Ji took a deep breath and didn’t reply immediately. Should he let them meet? What was He Zhaolin trying to do? Was it an Alpha’s competitive drive?
Suddenly, He Zhaolin’s phone was snatched away. The Omega lying in his arms was bubbling with jealousy. “What are you chatting about? You’ve been at it for so long. Didn’t you say you don’t like him at all?”
He Zhaolin coaxed his pure and lovely little lover. “I don’t like him, but our families have a partnership. For now, I still have to seek shade under the Qi family tree. Otherwise, would I have put up with him for all these years? With that foul temper of his, I’m not a masochist.”
It had been hard enough to shake him off; stringing him along like this was best. It made him feel guilty while ensuring he couldn’t leave. If he was just a little nicer to him, the man would be completely devoted. He Zhaolin plotted, feeling smug as he kissed his little lover.
“Mr. Qi, have some chicken soup.”
Lu Ming’s clear, gentle voice pulled Qi Ji back to reality. Qi Ji looked at the golden chicken soup before him, with a few goji berries and red dates floating on top. The aroma of the chicken piqued his appetite. He picked up the chopsticks and tried a taste. It was fragrant and not greasy at all.
“Actually, you don’t need to do so much,” Qi Ji said. “It’s not like I’ll be grateful to you anyway.”
Lu Ming gave a bright smile. “I’m not doing this to make you grateful. This is my responsibility to begin with.”
Qi Ji took a few sips of soup and wiped his mouth with a tissue. “Zhaolin is coming back to the country.”
Lu Ming was dazed for a few seconds before reacting. “The Alpha you were originally engaged to?”
“His name is He Zhaolin.”
“Oh,” Lu Ming’s expression turned solemn, lost in thought. “Will you two still be together?”
