- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 7 - Her Left Ear Suffered Severe Trauma, Resulting in Significant Hearing Damage
At 11 p.m., after a small gathering with a few classmates she had been close to during school, Jiang Lehan was about to take a taxi back to her hotel when she unexpectedly received a call from Liu Wuyi’s Omega mother.
Learning that Liu Wuyi had not returned home and wasn’t answering calls, Jiang Lehan also tried calling Liu Wuyi. Sure enough, all she heard was a busy tone. She immediately asked the driver to turn around and head to Liu Wuyi’s small apartment in Haicheng.
When the door opened, the room was pitch black. Jiang Lehan fumbled along the wall to switch on the light, instantly illuminating every corner of the room.
At that moment, the figure curled up by the window startled her.
“Didn’t you say you wanted some time alone to clear your head and then go back to your mom’s? What’s with the secret drinking here?” Jiang Lehan kicked aside the empty beer bottles scattered on the floor and sat down in front of Liu Wuyi.
From the moment Jiang Lehan entered, Liu Wuyi had remained motionless by the window, like a statue, staring out at the bustling traffic.
This apartment held many memories of Liu Wuyi’s relationship with Ji Yunshu. Even after Liu Wuyi moved to Jing City, she would occasionally return to clean the place herself, never leaving it to anyone else.
Receiving no response, Jiang Lehan didn’t press further. She opened an unopened beer and took a sip. “Your beer tastes awful bitter and astringent.”
“If you don’t like it, get out.” Liu Wuyi’s voice was hoarse from disuse.
“Don’t drink so much. If you start causing a scene, I’m not going to deal with it.”
“Then don’t.”
“Well, at least you can reply. Seems your mental state isn’t too bad. Not going home this late and not even telling your mom, she was so worried she called me. How old are you? Twenty-six, not sixteen.”
“I forgot.” Liu Wuyi looked embarrassed and stood up to look for her phone.
“Sit down. I already texted your mom when I came in. If we waited for you to call, she would’ve reported you missing.”
“Honestly, you liked her so much back then, and you still do now. You even met each other’s parents. I thought marriage was just a natural next step. How did you two break up so suddenly? Ji Yunshu just disappeared out of the blue, and things got so messy back then. Was there something that happened? You never told me. It’s all so strange are you two preparing to star in some angsty idol drama?”
Liu Wuyi downed the beer in her hand in one go, moved to the sofa, leaned back, and half-closed her eyes, still silent.
“The worst thing in a relationship is not communicating. If you don’t clear up misunderstandings, how can you ever reconcile?”
“If you ask me, winning your wife back requires shamelessness. When you see her, just hug her, shower her with sweet words, lay everything out on the table, and occasionally play the pity card. That’s how I managed to coax Shen Qingzhu into coming back to the country and marrying me.”
Hearing this, Liu Wuyi suddenly opened her eyes and sat up straight. “Does it work?”
“Give it a try. Even if I said it doesn’t work, would you really give up?” Jiang Lehan let out a dismissive “Tch” and shook her head, looking thoroughly unimpressed.
“Even I can tell that Bai Wanzhou still has feelings for Ji Yunshu. Do you think Ji Yunshu herself is unaware? If she wants to be with someone else, you won’t stand a chance. Do you really want to see Ji Yunshu with someone else?”
Seeing that Liu Wuyi remained silent, Jiang Lehan widened her eyes in disbelief. “No way! We’ve known each other since we were kids, and I never knew you were such a moral saint!”
“But I feel like she never wants to see me again.”
“That’s just your feeling, it’s not confirmed. Back then, Shen Qingzhu told me right to my face that she never wanted to see me again, but we’ve been married for years now. If you don’t go to her, there’s no chance at all.” Jiang Lehan waved her hand dismissively, her expression resolute.
“Ji Yunshu is probably staying at the Hailan Bay Hotel in the coastal district.”
“How do you know so clearly?”
Jiang Lehan shrugged. “I overheard it by accident.”
“After the alumni gathering, I met up with some classmates at Xiangshan Pavilion, and we happened to run into Ji Yunshu and Bai Wanzhou having dinner together. It was quite romantic!” Noticing Liu Wuyi’s subtly clenched fists, Jiang Lehan nodded with satisfaction.
The summer sun always rose early, casting its golden rays over the city’s skyscrapers, bathing the bustling metropolis in a layer of shimmering light.
At that moment, an Aston Martin Vantage sped down the road. Its body was a pristine, translucent porcelain gray, and the roar of its engine echoed through the sky, a perfect blend of power and elegance. Under the sunlight, it looked like a fierce beast charging toward the light.
The glaring sun pierced through the car window, illuminating Liu Wuyi’s face and highlighting the dark circles under her eyes.
Though she had tossed and turned all night, the thought of seeing Ji Yunshu again filled her with excitement.
She soon arrived at Hailan Bay Hotel, but unfortunately, the hotel did not allow outside vehicles, and there were no parking spots available downstairs. She had no choice but to park in a nearby lot.
Now, Liu Wuyi was walking toward the hotel, holding a bouquet of champagne roses, when she happened to turn her head and caught sight of the figure who had occupied her thoughts day and night.
“A-Yun!” Liu Wuyi called out with a smile.
Not far away, Ji Yunshu was walking along the sidewalk, lost in thought, her head lowered. She didn’t seem to hear and didn’t look up.
Suddenly, a reckless bicycle, speeding uncontrollably, was heading straight for Ji Yunshu.
Liu Wuyi’s pupils contracted sharply, her heartbeat racing. Instinctively, she shouted, “Ji Yunshu, watch out!”
Ji Yunshu finally looked up, but all she saw was Liu Wuyi lunging toward her. Before she could react, Liu Wuyi had wrapped her arms tightly around her, and the two of them tumbled into the nearby greenbelt.
Ji Yunshu emerged unscathed, but Liu Wuyi was not so fortunate.
As she rushed forward to shield Ji Yunshu, she couldn’t avoid the bicycle’s handlebars, which slammed hard into her back.
By tomorrow, she was sure to have a massive bruise there.
Her cheeks were scratched by small branches, leaving several bloody marks, and her ear collided with a stone planter. Her external hearing aid was flung several meters away by the impact, shattering into pieces. Instantly, a ringing noise filled her ears, followed by a long-forgotten pain, as if an invisible force were tearing at her eardrums. Gradually, a dark haze clouded her vision.
The agony was unbearable.
Ji Yunshu, still shaken, struggled to her feet and looked down to find Liu Wuyi lying pale-faced on the ground, unable to get up for a long while. She immediately grabbed Liu Wuyi’s hand and wrote the words “Go to the hospital” in her palm.
Liu Wuyi, with practiced composure, adjusted her state, waiting for the worst of the pain to pass and the dark haze before her eyes to finally fade away.
Seeing the worry on Ji Yunshu’s face, Liu Wuyi couldn’t help but feel that the injury was worth it, though she still tried to reassure her verbally: “It’s fine. I’ll be okay after sitting for a bit.”
Ji Yunshu refused to accept this and gestured to the person responsible for the accident nearby to call for an ambulance, insisting firmly on taking her to the hospital.
“Really, it’s not necessary. I was just frightened by the sudden situation earlier, which made me a bit pale. I’m actually completely fine. I’ll send a message to Jiang Lehan to come pick me up. If you have something to do, you can go ahead,” Liu Wuyi said, already roughly guessing her own condition and wanting to send Ji Yunshu away as quickly as possible.
But she had underestimated Ji Yunshu’s stubbornness. After a prolonged standoff, Liu Wuyi finally complied obediently, cooperating with the medical staff to board the ambulance and head to the nearest hospital.
Left behind at the scene were only a trampled bouquet of champagne roses and a dismantled external device.
Jiang Lehan rushed hurriedly to the hospital’s emergency department and saw Liu Wuyi slumped weakly in Ji Yunshu’s arms like a koala on a corridor bench, her arms wrapped around Ji Yunshu’s waist. Ji Yunshu, meanwhile, wore a cold expression but surprisingly allowed Liu Wuyi to cling to her.
“Doctor, her left ear was severely injured in the past, resulting in significant hearing loss. She had an electrode array implanted and wears an external device. I suspect the impact may have displaced the implant, but further confirmation is needed,” Jiang Lehan said rapidly to the doctor, skipping any teasing remarks about Liu Wuyi. She didn’t believe Liu Wuyi would clearly explain her medical history herself.
“Although the patient didn’t mention this to us, we had already suspected it and took a CT scan. We’re waiting for the results now. The patient should rest here for the time being,” the doctor replied.
“Miss, what happened? How did you end up in such a state?” Jiang Lehan repeated when she received no response from Liu Wuyi.
Ah, the external device must have been broken, no wonder she wasn’t responding. Jiang Lehan finally understood, rolling her eyes inwardly.
Hearing Jiang Lehan’s conversation with the doctor, Ji Yunshu froze. She glanced at Jiang Lehan, hesitated for a moment, then took out her damaged phone. Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she typed out the question, her heart pounding as she showed the screen to Jiang Lehan: “What do you mean? What happened to her left ear? Severe hearing damage?”
“Exactly what it sounds like. Five years ago, her left ear suffered a severe external impact, causing irreversible damage and deafness. If the implant is confirmed to be displaced, we need to return to Beijing quickly for surgery. This is a serious problem.”
Having reunited for so long, this was the first time Ji Yunshu carefully scanned every inch of Liu Wuyi’s skin. Finally, she noticed a faint bulge behind her ear.
Ji Yunshu abruptly reached out, brushed aside Liu Wuyi’s hair, and saw the implant embedded beneath the skin behind her ear.
“Take off those earrings, they’re digging into me.” These words echoed relentlessly in Ji Yunshu’s mind. During their reunion, she had brushed against the external device on Liu Wuyi’s ear but foolishly mistook it for an earring.
Having interacted with both of Liu Wuyi’s mothers, she knew her Omega mother had always been affectionate toward her, while her Alpha mother would never harm her either.
The emphasized timeframe of “five years ago” kept circling in Ji Yunshu’s thoughts.
Being exceptionally bright since childhood and having encountered all sorts of people, she possessed keen sensitivity to such matters. Thus, she guessed that Liu Wuyi’s hearing loss might be connected to her.
Ji Yunshu’s sudden movement startled Liu Wuyi. By the time Liu Wuyi realized her intention, it was too late to evade, the secret hidden beneath her skin for five years was finally exposed.
Even without overhearing Jiang Lehan’s conversation with the doctor, Ji Yunshu knew medical discussions with family were invariably about the patient’s condition. Enraged by this realization, she stomped hard on Jiang Lehan’s foot and snapped, “Jiang Lehan, you blabbermouth! Can’t keep anything to yourself!”
“Liu Wuyi, you’re really.” Jiang Lehan endured the pain, silently repeating to herself, I won’t argue with an invalid.
Something in their exchange must have upset Ji Yunshu, who cautiously stood up to leave. Liu Wuyi quickly grabbed her sleeve, lips trembling and eyes brimming with tears, pleading, “A-Yun, please don’t go.”
Fearing any abrupt movement might worsen her condition, Ji Yunshu hesitated briefly before sitting back down. She allowed Liu Wuyi to wrap her arms around her waist and rest her head in the crook of her neck.
The emergency room hallway reeked of disinfectant as medical staff weaved through the crowd, their expressions uniformly grave and tense. Against this backdrop, the two embracing figures on the bench stood out conspicuously.
Unlike Jiang Lehan’s anxious wait for the CT results, Liu Wuyi leaned contentedly against Ji Yunshu’s chest, lulled by her warmth and the faint osmanthus fragrance into drowsiness.
Suddenly, a scalding sensation on the back of her neck jolted her awake.
After a stunned moment, she looked up in alarm. Ji Yunshu was crying silently, obediently but the relentless stream of hot tears scorched her vulnerable skin, shattering her composure and making her share the pain.
