Did That A Get His Wife Back Today? - Chapter 6
Just after finishing the live stream, Jiang Lehan’s call came through again. Liu Wuyi couldn’t help but grumble inwardly, “This girl really has too much free time. She’d better have something important to say this time.” Though her words were sharp, her hands moved without hesitation as she answered the call.
Jiang Lehan’s cheerful voice immediately chimed in: “Good news, good news! Ji Yunshu is also going to the alumni reunion. Are you going?”
Upon hearing this, Liu Wuyi’s first reaction was surprise. She had always wondered how her childhood friend managed to get insider information so quickly. Worried that Jiang Lehan might have foolishly asked Ji Yunshu directly and ruined the budding plan forming in her mind, she asked, “How do you know? Did you ask her?”
Jiang Lehan denied it instantly, sounding shocked on the other end of the line: “Of course not! How could I dare ask her directly? She’d definitely ignore me. She’s changed so much if she’s in a bad mood, she might even kick me a couple of times.”
“When did your brain stop working? The alumni association already published the full list of attendees on their official website. I went through it name by name, nearly going blind in the process, but I finally spotted ‘Ji Yunshu’s’ name.” Jiang Lehan rambled on, not forgetting to take a jab at her friend.
“I knew you’d definitely go once you heard.”
Even without hearing Liu Wuyi’s response, Jiang Lehan’s tone was full of certainty. Liu Wuyi didn’t need to guess to know she was probably wearing an “I knew it, I know you too well” expression.
“Aren’t you going?”
“Of course I am! When has a lively event ever been complete without me? Besides, my dear Zhuzi is off filming in some remote mountain forest. The signal there is terrible, she can’t even call me.”
“Not being able to see my Zhuzi for over a month, I need to find something to keep myself busy. Otherwise, with the same old work day after day, I’ll pine away from longing.” Jiang Lehan poured out her grievances.
Liu Wuyi: “…”
The alumni reunion was held on the banks of the campus river named “Weilan River.” Willow branches drooped low, gently brushing the water’s surface, while colorful koi fish swam leisurely in the river. Many boats still drifted on the water, guided by boatmen poling their way through. Alumni returning to Haicheng University stepped onto the lush green grass, beginning the five-year reunion banquet.
The location of this alumni reunion was quite a coincidence it was the very place where Liu Wuyi and Ji Yunshu had first kindled the sparks of romance.
Returning to an old haunt always stirred up memories.
As soon as Liu Wuyi stepped into the venue, her eyes began searching for that familiar figure.
And there Ji Yunshu was, not far ahead of them, her black hair cascading down to her waist. She wore a white linen dress and a pair of white sneakers, just like in the old days.
Standing alone by the riverbank behind a willow tree, she gazed at the scenery on the opposite shore, lost in thought. Her silhouette seemed inexplicably lonely.
Liu Wuyi was staring at Ji Yunshu, mesmerized, when a sudden tug from behind pulled her back to reality. Turning around, she found Jiang Lehan looking at her with a serious expression before dragging her into a corner.
Liu Wuyi resisted fiercely: “Who are you hiding from? Don’t drag me into it, I’m afraid Shen Qingzhu will come after me.”
Jiang Lehan was not pleased to hear this and immediately straightened up. “What are you talking about? I walk the straight and narrow, and my heart belongs only to our Zhuzi. Besides, our Zhuzi is beautiful, gentle, kind.”
“Stop, stop, stop. You’ve said this at least a hundred times. Let’s get to the point.” Liu Wuyi was thinking about how to approach Ji Yunshu and found Jiang Lehan extremely noisy.
“Avoiding Ji Yunshu’s gaze, do you want to know why she can’t speak?” Jiang Lehan glanced around furtively, like a thief, and whispered in her ear.
“Obviously.”
“Leave it to me.”
“Weren’t you afraid of her before? How come you dare to ask now?”
Seeing Liu Wuyi’s skeptical look, Jiang Lehan slapped her on the back. “That was then, this is now. I have a happy and fulfilling family life, and seeing you all alone is just too pitiful. I’m willing to lend you a hand.”
“Don’t cause trouble. I don’t need your help this time. If you dare stir up trouble, I’ll spill all your past deeds to Shen Qingzhu.” Liu Wuyi desperately wanted to suppress Jiang Lehan’s restless heart, her tone laced with warning.
However, such a threat held little weight for Jiang Lehan. “Don’t worry, I’m just going to catch up with her, nothing more. After all, we were once classmates!” she vowed confidently.
“Look, an Alpha is heading toward Ji Yunshu. Isn’t that Bai Wanzhou? She used to be Ji Yunshu’s most ardent pursuer. Leave her to me, I’ll clear the path for you.” Jiang Lehan straightened her shirt and tie, cleared her throat, and solemnly walked in Ji Yunshu’s direction.
“Yunshu, are you here for the alumni reunion too? What a coincidence!” Jiang Lehan feigned surprise, pretending she had just noticed her, and greeted her.
“Yunshu, long time no see.” Bai Wanzhou’s gentle voice overlapped with Jiang Lehan’s boisterous one.
“Why are you hiding in the corner? I’ve been looking for you for a while.” Bai Wanzhou ignored Jiang Lehan entirely, focusing solely on catching up with Ji Yunshu.
Jiang Lehan wasn’t in the same major or year as either of them and wasn’t very familiar with Bai Wanzhou. She only remembered her because of Liu Wuyi’s past complaints about her. It was even less likely that Bai Wanzhou would know her. As the two exchanged pleasantries, Jiang Lehan found herself unable to get a word in.
Ji Yunshu took out her tablet and typed: “I can’t speak right now, so communication is a bit difficult. I was worried that if a classmate greeted me, I wouldn’t be able to respond, which would seem impolite, so I had to hide in the corner.”
“What happened? How did you suddenly lose your voice? Have you seen a doctor?” Bai Wanzhou looked concerned, but Ji Yunshu only smiled and didn’t respond.
Perhaps sensing that Ji Yunshu didn’t want to answer, Bai Wanzhou stopped pressing. “It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it. Coincidentally, I’ve learned sign language, so we shouldn’t have any trouble communicating. You can use sign language with me. It’s been so long since we last met could I treat you to dinner after the event?”
Bai Wanzhou’s reasoning was sound, and her approach was tactful. Ji Yunshu didn’t hesitate and nodded in agreement.
“Should we take a stroll around the campus? It’s been years since I last came back, and it feels like nothing here has changed.”
“Do you still remember this Weilan Bridge? Back when we used to head to the cafeteria after finishing our projects, we’d always cross this little bridge.”
Bai Wanzhou’s words stirred memories in Ji Yunshu, reminding her of how Bai Wanzhou had often looked out for her in the past. It also sparked her interest in revisiting the campus, so she signed, “Let’s go take a walk together.”
Jiang Lehan, standing nearby, overheard Bai Wanzhou’s remarks and saw that Ji Yunshu had already accepted the dinner invitation and was even using sign language. Alarm bells went off in her mind. Forgetting all about gathering information, she hurried back to Liu Wuyi and said anxiously, “Bai Wanzhou has brought out her ultimate weapon she knows sign language! Ji Yunshu looked absolutely delighted. The situation is not good. You need to step in now, I’m out of my depth as your strategist.”
Hearing this, Liu Wuyi immediately panicked. Without a care for her poise, she dashed over in her ten-centimeter heels and grabbed Ji Yunshu just as she was about to leave. With red-rimmed eyes, she pleaded, “A Yun, can we talk?”
At that moment, Ji Yunshu glanced at Bai Wanzhou, clearly hoping she would wait. Seeing their interaction, Liu Wuyi’s gaze toward Ji Yunshu instantly dimmed, consumed by jealousy.
In contrast, Bai Wanzou responded understandingly, “It’s fine, I’ll wait here for you.”
The two of them walked side by side onto Weilan Bridge, watching a couple in the distance laughing and boating together, neither saying a word.
Only when the couple disappeared from view did Ji Yunshu take out her tablet and calmly write: “Let me speak first. That day, you asked if I hated you. I didn’t answer directly, but now I want to tell you dwelling on this between us is pointless now.”
“We were both so young back then, only wanting a passionate romance without considering the practicalities. That’s why we fell apart at the slightest obstacle. For two mature individuals, to love means to face all challenges and overcome them, only then can there be a happy ending. Back then, we didn’t have that mindset we weren’t steadfast enough, nor did we trust each other completely. Now that we’ve grown up, looking back, it was just a part of our youth. Let’s both move on.”
It was clear Ji Yunshu had wanted to say these words for a long time. Perhaps the thought had emerged when they reunited, or maybe during the five years they were apart, she had been convincing herself that their relationship was merely the flutter and naivety of youth, an immature love.
Ji Yunshu had once said that feelings should never be defined, yet now she was defining what they’d shared. She was making an effort to bid farewell to the past.
“No, I don’t want to let go. Please,” Liu Wuyi’s tears burst forth uncontrollably. Trembling, she placed her hands on Ji Yunshu’s shoulders and begged through sobs.
“Why are you doing this? You were the one who broke up with me back then, and now you’re the one clinging on. You can’t have it both ways.”
“A Yun, I like you, I love you. There hasn’t been a single moment in these five years when I haven’t missed you. There’s been a misunderstanding it wasn’t me who said we should break up, it was.”
Having to communicate solely through typing had exhausted Ji Yunshu’s patience. She just wanted to quickly end these meaningless exchanges and had no desire to continue dwelling on the past with Liu Wuyi. “If it wasn’t you, then who else could it be? Don’t try to deceive me with such words, I’m not a fool.” After typing this, Ji Yunshu turned to leave but was pulled back once again.
Liu Wuyi wanted to say more, but Ji Yunshu pointed at the ring finger of her left hand and then furrowed her brows, staring at her intently.
The initial calm had completely faded, replaced by cold indifference in Ji Yunshu’s eyes. In her heart, she screamed silently, Where is the ring that belonged to you? You keep saying you still love me, but from the moment I saw you again, I noticed your finger was bare. I don’t want to believe you anymore.
Seeing Ji Yunshu’s gesture, Liu Wuyi’s face instantly turned deathly pale, and she nearly lost her balance.
In that moment, she understood Ji Yunshu’s unspoken words. She knew she had already been condemned.
When Ji Yunshu left, Liu Wuyi did not stop her, knowing she didn’t deserve to. She could only watch helplessly as Ji Yunshu walked away side by side with Bai Wanzhou, laughing and chatting.
Bent over in agony, Liu Wuyi leaned against the railing of Weilan Bridge, watching the koi fish in the river compete for food. She laughed, but the laughter soon turned into silent, wrenching sobs. Her tears fell into the river, creating ripples on the surface.
Seeing that Ji Yunshu had left with Bai Wanzhou while Liu Wuyi remained on the bridge, visibly consumed by pain, Jiang Lehan hurried over to check on her.
“Ah Yu, are you okay? What happened? I told you to go find Ji Yunshu, how did things end up like this? Is there still a chance for the two of you to rekindle your love?”
Liu Wuyi’s eyes were bloodshot. Clutching her chest, she struggled to speak for a long moment. “It’s impossible. Everything is impossible.”
From then on, their voices and traces faded into silence, like spring mountains veiled in mist and grass shrouded in haze.
But if one party persists with unwavering determination, perhaps spring will return in the coming year?
