- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 4 - This Time, I Won’t Let Her Go No Matter What
Before Liu Wuyi could finish speaking, and without even clearly seeing the face of the visitor, Ji Yunshu forcefully shut the door. As if afraid of something, she pressed her back against it, sliding down slowly until she sat on the floor, hugging her knees tightly as though that could give her some warmth. She remained dazed for a long time.
Ji Yunshu found herself utterly ridiculous. She had repeatedly warned herself that Liu Wuyi’s affairs had nothing to do with her, so why did anything related to her still easily unsettle her emotions? It shouldn’t be this way.
Even though Ji Yunshu had only caught a glimpse of the visitor’s figure, she was certain it was an Omega. The intimacy between the two of them couldn’t have been faked. So what did Liu Wuyi mean by coming to say these things to her now? What exactly did she take Ji Yunshu for? And what did she take that Omega for?
She had always been praised for her intelligence since childhood, yet now she found herself tangled in the convolutions of love unable to escape, unable to unravel.
In a daze, Ji Yunshu walked to the bay window and sat down quietly, gazing at the bustling traffic outside. Her eyes unfocused as she watched the two figures walking away. Why had she impulsively returned to the capital? This place was nothing but a land of heartache. What was the point of coming back?
What was she even hoping for?
“Yun… Shu?!”
Spotting the figure of her long-lost friend, Shen Qingzhu hurried forward, about to raise her hand in greeting, only to be met with a door slammed in her face. Stunned, she muttered, “What’s going on? I can understand Yunshu avoiding you like the plague that’s only natural. But why ignore me too? Don’t tell me because of you, we can’t even stay friends anymore.”
Shen Qingzhu looked as if the sky had fallen, making Liu Wuyi’s heart sink even further. When they left, Liu Wuyi was completely out of sorts.
During the drive, Shen Qingzhu repeatedly asked Liu Wuyi where she wanted to go, but she never responded, just staring blankly out the window like a fool.
Left with no choice, Shen Qingzhu had to drop Liu Wuyi off at the villa she shared with her Alpha, Jiang Lehan.
The blazing noon sunlight poured into the car, yet Liu Wuyi felt no warmth. Her current state of mind was as dark and chaotic as the entanglement of the previous night.
The hope she had painstakingly built in her heart was like a dam, outside it raged turbulent waters, and at its center stood herself.
The moment Ji Yunshu categorized her as someone else, tiny cracks had already begun to form in that dam. And then, seeing Ji Yunshu’s attitude toward their mutual friend Shen Qingzhu became the final, most decisive blow shattering the dam completely.
“I’ve delivered her to you. I’m leaving.” Shen Qingzhu didn’t spare Jiang Lehan a pleasant expression either. To quote her past words, “People who can hang out together are all cut from the same cloth.”
“Aw, come on, Little Bamboo. You haven’t seen me all morning, don’t you miss me? Give me a kiss.” Jiang Lehan knew Shen Qingzhu was in a bad mood and deliberately teased her.
“Get lost! I’ve got a flight to catch.”
Shen Qingzhu pushed away the eagerly approaching Jiang Lehan with disgust, then pointed at Liu Wuyi in frustration. “If it weren’t on my way, I wouldn’t have gone to pick you up. You and Yunshu broke up, and now I’m suffering for it too. She won’t even look at me anymore just now, she didn’t even spare me a glance before slamming the door in my face. Honestly, it’s all your fault.”
“Zhuzi, Wu Yi’s face has gone pale, so stop scolding her. Be careful on the road, call me when you land, make sure to eat on time during filming, and come back early, I’ll miss you.” Jiang Lehan whispered into Shen Qingzhu’s ear, stealing a quick kiss when she wasn’t looking.
Shen Qingzhu swatted away her Alpha’s wandering hands, which had been lingering around her waist, and muttered, “Got it, you’re so naggy.” With that, she hurried off.
“Ah Yu, Ji Yunshu is back. Everything’s getting better now, you should let go of those thoughts, shouldn’t you?”
At the mention of “Ji Yunshu,” Liu Wuyi finally snapped out of her daze and turned to look at Jiang Lehan.
“But she keeps avoiding me. When she looks at me, there’s only distance in her eyes.” Liu Wuyi’s voice was heavy with loneliness, but a hint of determination gradually seeped in. “But it’s fine. I’ll work hard to win her back this time. No matter what, I won’t let her go again.”
“That’s the spirit. Life only gets better when you have something to hope for.” Jiang Lehan sighed and patted Liu Wuyi’s shoulder. “Look at how you’ve been living these years completely lifeless. You can’t go on like this now. Think about it, why would Yunshu return to Jing City? The cost of living here is high, rent is expensive, and her whole family is in Yuncheng. She does live-streaming there’s no real need for her to come back here.”
Liu Wuyi slowly began to realize this. It was true what they said those involved couldn’t see as clearly as bystanders. She wasn’t as perceptive as Jiang Lehan.
With this little nudge, Liu Wuyi’s mood finally lifted, and she found the energy to joke with Jiang Lehan. “You’re so free today? Don’t you have work?”
“If I were free, I wouldn’t have asked Zhuzi to pick you up. After hearing so much from her on the phone, I figured a poor, wifeless soul like you could use a strategist like me to analyze the situation. So I postponed my meetings. How about a drink? Drown your sorrows.” Jiang Lehan thumped her chest dramatically, as if ready to go all out for a friend.
“If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.” Liu Wuyi elbowed Jiang Lehan hard, her words practically dripping with gritted teeth.
After teasing Liu Wuyi just enough, Jiang Lehan headed to the wine cellar to fetch some drinks, striding with the air of someone about to broaden horizons. Left alone on the sofa, Liu Wuyi sat in the empty, echoing villa.
This couple’s reason for not hiring a housekeeper was rather unique. Shen Qingzhu was someone who valued boundaries even after getting together with Jiang Lehan, she preferred handling daily life on her own. She believed that couples sharing household chores strengthened their relationship, so she didn’t like the idea of having a housekeeper constantly around.
Jiang Lehan, on the other hand, lived by the philosophy that listening to one’s wife led to prosperity. Having spent years in the so-called “culinary wasteland” of the UK, she had become adept at housework and cooking. Naturally, she went along with whatever Shen Qingzhu said, so they never hired a live-in maid. Only when both were away for long periods would they ask the housekeeper from the family estate to come and clean.
The first time Liu Wuyi heard this reasoning, she found it quite sound though she never had the chance to put it into practice herself.
“I’ve got plenty of wine here, mostly from my personal collection. There’s a Château Margaux 1787, only one bottle, no more. I actually stole it from my mother. And there’s a Romanée-Conti 1990, also just one bottle, also from my mother. Which one do you want to start with, or would you rather go straight for the hard liquor?” Jiang Lehan carried out several bottles of wine, pulling Liu Wuyi back from her reverie.
“Either is fine, as long as it gets me drunk.”
Liu Wuyi wasn’t picky and casually let Jiang Lehan uncork a few bottles. “Tsk, someone who doesn’t know much about wine really isn’t choosy. After all this, you’ll be carried out flat on your back instead of walking out on your own two feet.”
“Are you sure it’s okay to drink your mother’s wine like this?” Liu Wuyi suddenly remembered what Jiang Lehan had just said and grew a little worried. She had witnessed the destructive power of Jiang Lehan’s mother firsthand.
Jiang Lehan waved her off dismissively. “It’s been out for ages, if she were going to notice, she would’ve already. Besides, my mother has so much wine. Taking just these two bottles? No way she’d find out. And even if she did, she wouldn’t care how old I am or whether I’d lose face. She’d smack me just the same.”
“Just the other day, Shen Qingzhu and I went back to the old house for dinner. I saw a new teapot on the coffee table in the front hall and got curious, so I picked it up to take a look. But when I lifted it, the lid slipped and I chipped a corner. My mother immediately kicked me so hard I couldn’t even get up.”
Jiang Lehan clutched her chest in exaggerated anguish, full of complaints about her mother. “And she did it right in front of Qingzhu, too! I got laughed at for ages because of that.”
Liu Wuyi was finally amused, a low chuckle escaping her lips, dispelling the gloom that had hung over her all day.
“By the way, do you know any reputable throat or vocal cord specialists? Hook me up with a few. I need to ask about something.” Before they started drinking, Liu Wuyi made sure to bring up the serious matter weighing on her mind, afraid she’d forget once the alcohol kicked in.
Jiang Lehan’s Omega mother’s family was in the medical industry, and the largest private hospital in the capital currently belonged to her Omega mother. Asking Jiang Lehan for doctor recommendations was a sure bet.
“What, is your throat acting up? You sound fine to me, you’re talking plenty,” Jiang Lehan said, eyeing Liu Wuyi with concern, almost as if she wanted to pry her mouth open to see what was wrong.
“Stop joking around. It’s Yunshu. I’ve realized she can’t speak. Help me find a specialist for this.” Liu Wuyi sighed, finally voicing her worry. “I don’t have the connections you do in this area, and I’m afraid if I look on my own, I might alert the wrong people and cause unnecessary trouble.”
Jiang Lehan was reliable when it counted and understood Liu Wuyi’s predicament. She agreed immediately. “I know what’s important. Leave it to me, you can relax.”
Glass after glass, the alcohol took hold, and Jiang Lehan’s mind began to fog. Her words grew unfiltered. “I just don’t get it. Your family’s company is thriving, so why is Aunt Liu still so obsessed with arranging marriages for you left and right? Or is there some hidden reason that can’t be spoken about openly?”
The Liu and Jiang families had been close for generations. The two had grown up together, attended the same university, and maintained an excellent relationship where nothing was off-limits in their conversations.
Liu Wuyi raised her head and downed the wine in her glass in one gulp, letting out a cold snort with a mocking expression. “Who knows? People are always greedy. Once they get a taste of power, they just want more. Maybe my mother is just that kind of insatiable person.”
She was a little drunk, actually badmouthing her own mother. If she had been sober and heard Jiang Lehan say such things, she would have at most smiled without a word, then spent the long night alone, digesting her own helplessness.
