Did That A Get His Wife Back Today? - Chapter 21
After enjoying a delicious bowl of soup at her mother’s place, Liu Wuyi drove her beloved car back to her residential complex, bringing along the coveted spoils for Jiang Lehan, who seemed as hungry as a starving ghost. As she entered the underground garage and prepared to try out the cool tail-flick parking technique she had recently learned, she discovered that her designated parking spot had been brazenly occupied by someone else.
Who was so shameless, snatching up an empty spot the moment they saw one?
Grumbling inwardly, Liu Wuyi got out of the car and strode toward the nearby parking space with heavy, forceful steps, as if she intended to stomp right through the floor.
Suddenly, Liu Wuyi thought she saw something but wasn’t entirely sure. Slowly, she lowered her sunglasses.
A Maybach S900?!
And a limited edition at that! Were the residents of this complex really that well-off?
Liu Wuyi circled the ultra-luxurious Maybach once and came to a halt in front of it. She even took off her sunglasses, her slender, well-defined fingers stroking her chin repeatedly.
Hiss!
A car from Jing City, with a license plate bearing five eights. Why did it look so familiar, as if she had seen it somewhere before?
Yet, no matter how hard she racked her brain, she simply couldn’t recall.
Just then, the driver’s side window of the Maybach S900 suddenly rolled down, revealing a familiar face. “Young Miss, you’ve finally returned. The Chairman is waiting for you in your apartment.” The person in the car was Lin Qing, an assistant highly valued by her mother, Liu Xiao.
So valued, in fact, that despite having an entire secretarial team, Liu Xiao always brought this assistant along wherever she went, entrusting her with both work-related and personal matters.
“Chairman Liu?”
Confirming she hadn’t misheard, Liu Wuyi responded with a nonchalant “Oh.” She instinctively smoothed her long hair and adjusted her sunglasses, appearing both casual and indifferent. Then, she lightly tossed her car keys to Lin Qing, instructing her to park the car properly before driving away, and leisurely made her way toward the elevator.
Her movements were as if set to 0.5x speed, slowly opening the door, slowly stepping into the entryway to change her shoes, moving as sluggishly as a sloth.
Before she could even place the thermal container in her hand into the kitchen, Liu Xiao’s oppressive presence washed over her. “What are you dawdling for? I’ve been waiting here for ages. Did you go to your mother’s place again?” Though phrased as a question, Liu Xiao’s tone left no room for doubt.
Liu Xiao’s gaze remained fixed on Liu Wuyi until she walked over and set the thermal container on the coffee table in front of the sofa where she was about to sit. Only then did Liu Xiao slowly speak again, “What kind of example is an adult Alpha like you, always clinging to your Omega mother? Are you not weaned yet?”
Hearing this, Liu Wuyi was far from pleased, and her words turned sharp and biting. “Do you live by the sea? Mind your own business.”
Liu Xiao: “I…”
Liu Wuyi had never had much patience for her mother. “Just tell me what you want.” For someone her age, she was so long-winded and utterly lacking in composure.
If this had happened on any other day, Liu Xiao would either have lectured her thoroughly or traded barbs with her. The two of them, mother and daughter, often seemed more like sworn enemies.
But at this moment, Liu Xiao seemed like a completely different person. She appeared to be in a good mood, her tone suddenly gentle and calm. Even the corners of her mouth, usually tightly suppressed, now held a slight upward curve. “I happened to be in Haicheng for a business meeting, so I thought I’d drop by to see you.”
Unwarranted kindness often hides ill intentions.
Did the company go bankrupt? Did the deal fall through? Or has she found a second spring in her life lately?
No way, can an old tree still blossom? Is her hand even up to the task?
It wasn’t that Liu Wuyi was overthinking when people get older, their hands tend to tremble, even if they exercise regularly.
Liu Wuyi let her thoughts battle it out in her mind for what felt like three hundred rounds. Her eyes drifted aimlessly as she looked at her mother, but then she suddenly caught sight of Jiang Lehan, who was huddled inconspicuously in the corner. All she wanted was to get her mother out of there as quickly as possible. “You’ve seen me, so you can leave now. This apartment isn’t just mine, you’re disturbing someone else’s rest.”
Liu Xiao: “…”
The rare maternal warmth that had just surfaced vanished without a trace.
Jiang Lehan: “…”
Jiang Lehan sat in the corner, her back turned to Liu Xiao, who radiated an intimidating aura of authority. She strained her ears to listen to their conversation. When she suddenly heard Liu Wuyi’s rebellious remarks, her eyes widened in shock, and the corner of her mouth twitched slightly. She raised her right hand and pointed at herself, casting an accusatory glare at Liu Wuyi, who was facing her. Silently, she mouthed, Liu Wuyi, would it kill you not to drag me into this?!
Liu Xiao coughed twice and straightened her expression. “I heard you’ve been spending a lot of time with a young Omega girl lately?”
“Did you hire someone to spy on me? Are you following me?” A wave of suspicion instantly rose in Liu Wuyi’s heart, and her expression shifted. Gone was the casual indifference she had shown when she first saw her mother. She glanced around the room, her tone almost a roar. “You didn’t install surveillance in my apartment, did you? This is the home Mom bought for me, it’s not yours to control.”
She loathed being constantly watched, having no freedom or sense of self. If she were to think about it in extreme terms, she would consider losing her freedom worse than death.
This was also why she had rebelliously chosen to pursue a career in music instead of obediently following the path her family had laid out for her.
Liu Xiao frowned as she scrutinized Liu Wuyi, who was fidgeting restlessly with anger. She had to admit that her daughter was the spitting image of her younger self rebellious and defiant.
She often tried to reassure herself that her daughter was still young, that her actions were just trivial rebellions. As long as she remained within her control, she was willing to let her daughter spread her wings for a while. But the time she was willing to give wouldn’t last forever.
At this thought, Liu Xiao seemed to take a deep breath. “Don’t worry, no one wants to monitor you.”
Unwilling to continue this unpleasant topic with her stubborn daughter, she changed the subject. “Do you have enough money? Do you need me to increase your allowance?”
Hearing her mother’s reassurance, Liu Wuyi let out a sigh of relief, though her tone remained stiff. “If I run out, I can just use your card.”
Liu Xiao: “…”
She already knew what kind of person Liu Wuyi was, she shouldn’t have bothered asking.
After finally managing to send Liu Xiao away, Liu Wuyi smiled ingratiatingly and called Jiang Lehan over to have some soup. But when she turned to look at the coffee table where the thermal container had been, her smile froze instantly.
The coffee table was empty. The thermal container was nowhere to be seen.
Seaside Music Park, live at the Grassland Music Festival.
At this moment, there was still a long time before the start of the event. Aside from the staff, there were only a few early-bird spectators scattered across the lawn.
Having woken up too early to do her makeup, Liu Wuyi, clutching the sheet music she would need later, leaned against a large tree by the grass, feeling drowsy.
Silently, someone approached her.
“You don’t seem nervous at all,” a soft voice broke into Liu Wuyi’s ears. Startled, she opened her eyes to find a pair of smiling eyes right in front of her.
Who else could it be but her own Ji Yunshu? “I was a little nervous at first, but the thought of you watching me from the audience made all the nervousness disappear.”
Ji Yunshu was amused. She was clever enough to see through Liu Wuyi’s sweet talk meant to flatter her.
After all, how could a professional who had taken entrance exams, performed in numerous concerts, and fought her way into the country’s top music program possibly be nervous about a small, privately-run music festival?
But Ji Yunshu didn’t call her out. She was becoming increasingly immersed in Liu Wuyi’s endless affection, unable to extricate herself.
Honestly, she felt like she was regressing!
Ji Yunshu silently scolded herself in her heart.
Indeed!
For Liu Wuyi, a small-scale private music festival like this wasn’t enough to make her nervous. However, her right eyelid had been twitching nonstop since she left home this morning, only stopping just moments ago. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen.
After all, her partner for the performance was utterly unreliable. They had agreed to practice together these past few days, but her partner had constantly made excuses either claiming to have classes or complaining about various aches and pains to avoid rehearsing.
In short, she never showed up.
As a result, their total practice time together was definitely less than twelve hours, far from enough for a flawless collaboration.
The weather was already hinting at the onset of winter, with temperatures dropping steadily. Even with the sun high in the sky, it didn’t feel particularly warm.
The organizers really don’t know how to run a business, Liu Wuyi thought. Holding a music festival outdoors in such cold weather, what if no one shows up?
After waiting under the tree for what felt like ages, the music festival was about to begin when Liu Wuyi finally saw her partner arriving late.
“You’re cutting it really close. What, no aches or pains to complain about today?” Liu Wuyi said sarcastically.
Her partner let out an awkward laugh, her expression apologetic as she pursed her lips. “There’s something I need to tell you, but please don’t get angry. I really have no choice.”
Seeing her hesitant demeanor, Liu Wuyi’s heart sank, and her right eyelid began twitching again. “Don’t tell me you can’t play the guzheng today.”
“I really can’t help it. I have gastroenteritis today vomiting and diarrhea. There’s no way I can perform.”
“If you couldn’t perform, you should have said so earlier! Where am I supposed to find someone who can play the guzheng at the last minute?”
“When nature calls, what can I do? If I wait any longer, I’m going to have an accident.”
“No, no this cold wind is making my stomach act up again. I need to go to the restroom. You figure something out.”
With that, she shoved the sheet music into Ji Yunshu, who was standing nearby, and ran off without a second thought.
Judging by her unsteady steps, she really was in a hurry.
“Hey, wait!” Liu Wuyi called after her, feeling utterly defeated.
She never imagined she’d encounter someone so irresponsible.
It was the first time in her life she had collaborated with someone, yet it ended in a miserable failure.
Ji Yunshu held the score in her hands, feeling somewhat at a loss. Tentatively, she spoke up, “I know a little guzheng. Would you like to?”
Upon hearing this, Liu Wuyi’s eyes instantly lit up. She looked at Ji Yunshu beside her again, feeling as though she radiated a holy brilliance, an angel sent to save her. “Alright, play with me,” she agreed without hesitation.
Whatever Ji Yunshu said, she believed without question.
The fusion of the guzheng and the piano, the collision of Eastern and Western music in that moment, they were dazzling.
In that moment, they were unexpectedly in sync.
