- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 22 - I left my scarf in your bag. Can you bring it down for me?
Liu Wuyi took the lead melody, with Ji Yunshu playing a supporting role. On stage, the two performed a passionate piece of farewell, sending off wave after wave of the audience. Under the fusion of scene and emotion, they felt the stage lights shining down on them. In that moment, a tide of resolute and unwavering emotions surged toward them.
It took a long time for the feeling to subside.
As the final note faded away,
their souls became perfectly aligned.
It wasn’t until the organizers announced the end of the music festival that the once-bustling park gradually quieted down. Only a few scattered children remained, chasing and playing on the lawn, occasionally picking up glow sticks left by the audience or balloons used to decorate the venue, tossing them at each other in playful chaos.
Laughter and joy filled the air.
Liu Wuyi and Ji Yunshu sat back down under the large tree, close together, almost shoulder to shoulder, calming the lingering excitement from their performance.
As the sky grew darker, the wind picked up, tangling their hair together as if chasing and intertwining, never to part.
Black and white complemented each other perfectly.
The streetlights behind them flickered on one by one, casting their silhouettes onto the grass, making it seem as though they were nestled closely together. The phrase “quiet years of tranquility” suddenly flashed through Liu Wuyi’s mind.
“It’s my birthday tomorrow. Will you come?” Ji Yunshu’s sudden question nearly made Liu Wuyi topple over onto her.
The movement brought them even closer, with Liu Wuyi’s face almost pressed against Ji Yunshu’s neck, nearly brushing against her alluring cheek.
Hearing no response from Liu Wuyi, Ji Yunshu felt somewhat awkward and added stiffly, “It’s fine if you can’t make it. I’ll just celebrate with my roommate.”
In truth, Liu Wuyi hadn’t intentionally ignored her. They were so close that she was completely captivated by the faint, intoxicating scent of osmanthus emanating from Ji Yunshu. It was only when Ji Yunshu spoke again that she snapped out of it. “Your birthday is tomorrow? How could I not go?” Her reply was filled with a desperate eagerness.
Through the hazy glow of the streetlights, Liu Wuyi caught the expression on Ji Yunshu’s face, the same hesitation, the same inner conflict she felt she had seen somewhere before.
At that moment, a memory from a few days ago flashed through her mind, and Liu Wuyi suddenly understood what Ji Yunshu had hesitated to tell her back then. “So, that’s what you wanted to tell me the other day!”
“I noticed you were hesitating. Did you not want to invite me to celebrate your birthday?” Liu Wuyi’s voice carried a hint of grievance as she looked pitifully at Ji Yunshu, like a drenched puppy.
Ji Yunshu had no experience comforting adult Alphas, but during her holidays at home, she had occasionally helped take care of a neighbor’s child, who was also an Alpha. Drawing from that experience, she awkwardly applied her child-comforting skills. “No, no, you’ve misunderstood. I originally didn’t want to celebrate my birthday. I thought it would be a waste of time. My mother is working hard all by herself to support my studies, and I’d rather use that time to focus on learning.” As she spoke, she rubbed her hands together to warm them, then gently placed them on the back of Liu Wuyi’s neck, softly stroking her as if soothing her.
Liu Wuyi, who hadn’t been feeling wronged in the first place, now seemed like a contentedly petted kitten, leaning directly against Ji Yunshu’s shoulder and breathing in the warm, fragrant scent radiating from her.
Even in such a moment, Liu Wuyi didn’t forget to pick up on the nuance in Ji Yunshu’s words and naturally asked, “One person?” The three words came out soft, coquettish, and heart-stirring.
Oh no, why did I have to ask that?
Regretfully, Liu Wuyi patted her lips lightly, her face full of apology.
So, was Yunshu from a single-parent family?
“Sorry, if I’ve overstepped, you don’t have to tell me.” As much as she wanted to know, Liu Wuyi didn’t want to intrude on Ji Yunshu’s privacy, it was a matter of basic respect.
“It’s nothing I can’t share. My Alpha mother passed away when I was very young. I was raised by my Omega mother and Omega grandmother.”
“Your Omega family members are truly remarkable.” Hearing Liu Wuyi’s unreserved praise, Ji Yunshu’s heart melted even more. Unconsciously, she reached out and gently stroked the side of Liu Wuyi’s face that wasn’t resting on her shoulder, her touch tender and lingering.
Ji Yunshu didn’t mind Liu Wuyi’s closeness or dependence. Instead, she felt as if a part of her heart that had always been empty was now filled by this girl who had barged into her world, an unprecedented sense of wholeness.
She had long since fallen for this Alpha whose eyes held only her.
“Yes, I can never repay them. All I can do is study hard to make them happy and proud of me.”
“You’re already outstanding, the ‘child from another family’ that teachers and parents always praise.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Ji Yunshu felt as if a feather had lightly brushed her heart, sending a tingling warmth through her entire body. She hadn’t realized she held such a high place in Liu Wuyi’s heart.
So this is what it feels like to be sincerely praised.
“Then you must come on time tomorrow at 7 p.m.,” Ji Yunshu emphasized. Liu Wuyi seemed to remember something suddenly and sprang to her feet.
“No, the time you gave is too tight! I need to hurry and prepare a gift for you.”
“There’s no need. This time, I’ve only invited you and my roommate. I plan to keep it simple just a hotpot dinner. No gifts necessary, please don’t trouble yourself.”
“How could it be trouble? A gift is a must! You should receive a gift from me on your birthday, it’s my sincerest wish for you.”
With that, Liu Wuyi pulled Ji Yunshu up and half-guided, half-pushed her into the car. After dropping her off at school, she would set off to prepare the gift.
The first snow had yet to arrive, but the chilly winter breeze had already swept through every street and alley of Haicheng, as if sprinkling a cooling agent over the city. Pedestrians were sparse, and a serene tranquility settled over the scene.
On such a night, Liu Wuyi had plans to go out.
This was her first time attending Ji Yunshu’s birthday celebration, and she naturally wanted to dress up nicely to show how much she valued the occasion.
Of course, if she could charm Ji Yunshu in the process, that would be even better.
Despite the freezing weather, Liu Wuyi wore only a shirt under her khaki trench coat, joining the ranks of those who prioritized style over warmth.
“It’s not even ten degrees outside, and you’re planning to go out dressed like that? Why not add a scarf?” But it really doesn’t feel cold, does it?
Could it be that seeing someone you like makes your heart feel warm?
Jiang Lehan was shocked. Jiang Lehan couldn’t understand.
Liu Wuyi thought about it and agreed. After all, wearing a scarf wouldn’t ruin her outfit for the day, so she turned back to her bedroom to grab a red plaid scarf.
When she drove near the hot pot restaurant address Ji Yunshu had sent her, she saw Ji Yunshu waiting at the entrance, looking around.
“Wuyi, over here!” Ji Yunshu waved gently and called out to her. The moment Liu Wuyi saw her, she broke into a smile and waved back. After parking the car, she hurried over to Ji Yunshu.
“Yunshu, happy birthday!” Though it was just a short phrase, Liu Wuyi managed to infuse it with so much playful intonation that it made Ji Yunshu laugh. She didn’t forget the birthday gift either, presenting the box she had hidden behind her back as she spoke.
“Didn’t I tell you not to get me anything?”
“Others might skip it, but how could I? I’m not someone who ignores special occasions!” With that, Liu Wuyi playfully winked at Ji Yunshu.
Following Ji Yunshu to the reserved private room, Liu Wuyi met her roommates. She hadn’t expected them to be so considerate they had tacitly left the seat next to Ji Yunshu empty, saving it for her.
Building a good relationship with her roommates really paid off, Liu Wuyi thought, once again admiring her own foresight.
Liu Wuyi greeted everyone warmly before taking her seat. It was only then that she noticed the number of people seemed off. “Are there only three people in your dorm?”
Zhang Jiajia put down her chopsticks and replied, “There’s actually one more roommate, but no matter how much we tried to persuade her, she wouldn’t come.”
“Let’s not worry about her for now. We can bring her some food later. I don’t know what’s gotten into her.” Ji Yunshu’s birthday was supposed to be a happy occasion for the whole dorm, so Su Linlin was a bit annoyed that this had happened.
In the private room, steam from the hot pot filled the air, causing the temperature to rise rapidly. After sitting for just a short while, beads of sweat had already formed on Liu Wuyi’s forehead, and the scarf around her neck became unbearable.
“Need a place to put your scarf? You can put it in my bag,” Ji Yunshu said, noticing Liu Wuyi’s discomfort out of the corner of her eye. She naturally opened her backpack.
Liu Wuyi took the opportunity to place the scarf inside, as if they had done this many times before.
The two roommates across from them froze simultaneously, exchanged glances, and immediately revealed meaningful expressions.
Just then, a message notification sounded. Liu Wuyi glanced at her phone casually, then quickly picked it up, opened WeChat, and began typing a series of messages to the person on the other end.
Her expression was serious, as if she were reviewing an important project.
Noticing Liu Wuyi’s actions, the chatter in the room died down instantly. Everyone watched her movements quietly.
“Wuyi, put your phone away during dinner. You might choke if you’re not careful.”
Liu Wuyi had just finished communicating with the other person and put her phone down. She looked up and asked, “Why is everyone staring at me? Aren’t you going to eat?”
The two roommates narrowed their eyes again, their gazes filled with curiosity.
Liu Wuyi realized her blunder and frantically turned off her screen. “Sorry, I had something urgent to deal with just now,” she said, genuinely embarrassed by her rudeness.
Fortunately, no one commented after her apology, and they continued enjoying the hotpot.
The restaurant wasn’t far from the university, so to walk off the meal, they all strolled back toward campus.
Her two roommates walked briskly ahead as if fleeing from predators more like speed walking than a leisurely stroll while Liu Wuyi and Ji Yunshu ambled along side by side behind them.
Just then, the same message notification chimed again.
Liu Wuyi glanced swiftly at her screen and immediately halted, turning to Ji Yunshu with a sincere look. “Yunshu, something urgent has come up. I have to go now and won’t be able to walk you back to the dorm.”
The two roommates ahead seemed to have eyes and ears on the back of their heads they clearly overheard every word.
Ji Yunshu, ever understanding, told her to be careful on the way, but her roommates weren’t having it.
“What’s wrong with her? It’s your birthday today! And she’s just leaving like that?” Su Linlin reacted most strongly to Liu Wuyi’s attitude, switching from her earlier polite “junior” to now calling her “that person.”
“What if she really has something urgent?” Zhang Jiajia patted Su Linlin’s back, trying to calm her down, and exchanged a look with her as if to say, “Yunshu is right here, keep it down.”
When the three returned to the dorm and saw Ye Shiqi’s bed still empty, they didn’t react much, as if accustomed to her early departures and late returns.
“Yunshu, it’s Liu Wuyi on the phone.” Ji Yunshu was washing up on the balcony, Su Linlin was showering in the bathroom, and only Zhang Jiajia remained inside. Hearing the phone ring, she called out toward the balcony.
Ji Yunshu walked in, her expression as calm as ever, but her steps were noticeably flustered.
In truth, when she heard Liu Wuyi say she had to leave urgently earlier that evening, Ji Yunshu’s inner reaction was starkly different from her outward composure.
So, seeing Liu Wuyi’s caller ID, her first instinct was actually nervousness.
“I left my scarf in your bag. Could you bring it down? I’m outside your dorm.”
