- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 18 - A Soft Body Pressed Against Her Again
At this moment, Liu Wuyi quietly moved to the stern of the boat and stealthily reached into the bag at her feet, retrieving the small camera she had prepared earlier. While Ji Yunshu was busy capturing the scenery, Liu Wuyi pretended to photograph the sunset and secretly snapped a picture of their embracing shadows.
In the photo, she cleverly used angles to capture Ji Yunshu’s profile as well.
This was their first photo together. Even though it was merely an elusive shadow, years later, it would become Liu Wuyi’s only solace.
Under the vast sky, flocks of wild geese glided gracefully through the multicolored glow, merging with the lingering rays of the sunset, adding a touch of grandeur to the breathtaking scene.
“Photos taken with a camera should be better than those taken with a phone. Can you let me see.”
Ji Yunshu suddenly turned around, startling Liu Wuyi. Already feeling guilty, Liu Wuyi instinctively leaned back with the camera in her hand, trying to avoid Ji Yunshu’s probing gaze.
But at that very moment, an accident occurred.
The small boat couldn’t handle Liu Wuyi’s sudden movement. As she leaned back, the boat began to sway slightly.
As Liu Wuyi’s movements grew more exaggerated, the boat tilted further. Losing her balance, Liu Wuyi tumbled headfirst into the water.
The river surface erupted with a huge splash, scattering the koi fish that had been swimming around the boat. Ji Yunshu, still on the boat, was slightly affected but managed to avoid most of the water droplets. Only a few splashed onto her shoes and face.
In an instant, the river surface calmed, leaving only ripples. The boat gradually stabilized. If not for Liu Wuyi’s hand holding the camera still visible above the water, everything would have seemed as if nothing had happened.
Snapping out of her shock, Ji Yunshu ignored the water on her face and rushed to where Liu Wuyi had been sitting. She stretched out her hand and cried out, “Wuyi, the water isn’t deep! Relax, try to stand up! Then grab my hand, I’ll pull you up!”
“Wuyi!”
There was no response from Liu Wuyi.
The Weilan River was not deep, and its water was clear. Ji Yunshu could clearly see Liu Wuyi’s struggles underwater. Her brows furrowed, and anxiety filled her eyes.
Liu Wuyi didn’t know how to swim!
Her frantic flailing and struggling were followed by choking, which could quickly lead to suffocation and drowning.
If Liu Wuyi had tried to stand up, she would have realized the water only reached her neck.
But the fear of drowning enveloped her like a thick fog, trapping her in a prison of panic. It dragged her back to the memory of nearly drowning three years ago, overwhelming her with pain and helplessness.
Liu Wuyi’s pupils dilated, her mind went blank, yet she instinctively clutched the camera, an action that prevented her from saving herself.
Time ticked by. Ji Yunshu cautiously tried multiple times to grab the hand Liu Wuyi held above the water, but it remained stiff and unmoving. Once, Ji Yunshu managed to grasp it, but without leverage, she lost her grip.
Her other hand flailed wildly in the water, but struggling only sent splashes flying everywhere.
Each attempt ended in failure.
Utterly helpless.
“Wuyi, stop moving your hands, I can’t reach you!” Ji Yunshu shouted toward Liu Wuyi, but her voice was swallowed by the splashing water Liu Wuyi created.
Useless.
Was Liu Wuyi afraid of water?!
The evening wind grew more unruly, rustling the willow trees along the shore. The boat, swaying with the wind, drifted further from where Liu Wuyi had fallen. Ji Yunshu made a quick decision to seek help.
She called out to the security guard stationed on the bank.
Once she got a response, Ji Yunshu grabbed the paddle at the bow and rowed against the wind.
Back to Liu Wuyi’s side.
“Wuyi, relax, let your body float.”
Ji Yunshu’s concerned calls finally pierced through the water and reached Liu Wuyi’s ears.
At the same time, Liu Wuyi broke free from her painful memories, opened her eyes, and stared intently ahead.
The sky was darkening, losing its color, and the surroundings grew dim, becoming hard to see.
Yet, through the river’s surface, which felt like a barrier, Liu Wuyi saw Ji Yunshu.
Her heart instantly calmed, as if she had found an anchor. The initial panic vanished completely.
In that moment, Liu Wuyi finally understood the words her Omega mother had spoken on her sickbed long ago. She had been too young then, only remembering one small phrase: “Staying away from her means staying away from happiness.”
It was true.
She had always interpreted it as: getting closer to the one in her heart meant getting closer to happiness.
Liu Wuyi thought.
Now she realized something else.
Getting closer to Ji Yunshu, finding happiness, made her brave.
With a splash, Liu Wuyi broke through the water’s surface, shattered the barrier, and carefully tucked the camera she treasured back into her bag.
She didn’t take Ji Yunshu’s outstretched hand. Instead, she gripped the side of the boat and hoisted herself back onboard.
The river gradually returned to calm, leaving only faint, insignificant ripples.
The evening temperature dropped quickly, and the river water was chilly. As soon as she was on the boat, the nimble evening wind found its way into Liu Wuyi’s damp clothes, making her shiver uncontrollably, her teeth chattering.
But the next moment, Liu Wuyi felt a weight on her shoulders a jacket, carrying the scent of osmanthus and residual warmth, was draped over her.
Liu Wuyi froze, about to look up, when a soft body pressed against hers. Then she heard a voice tinged with lingering fear, “You scared me to death.”
Ji Yunshu was hugging her!
Leaning against her! Worried about her!
Liu Wuyi’s heart bloomed with joy, so elated she felt dizzy.
Cold river water dripped from her hair onto her skin, but she didn’t feel the chill at all.
Noticing that Ji Yunshu had given her only jacket to her, while Ji Yunshu herself wore just a thin dress, Liu Wuyi instinctively tried to take it off.
“Keep it on. After falling in the water, it’s easy to lose body heat. Don’t get sick,” Ji Yunshu said, stopping Liu Wuyi’s movement while gently tucking the collar of the jacket around Liu Wuyi’s shoulders to keep the wind from sneaking in.
“Are you okay, the student who fell in? Are you hurt? Do you need an ambulance?”
The call from the shore reached Liu Wuyi’s ears, and both of them looked up simultaneously toward the source of the sound. They realized that, without noticing, a crowd of classmates and security guards had gathered by the riverbank.
Everyone was staring intently at the center of the incident.
For some reason, Liu Wuyi flopped face-down onto the boat, silently chanting in her mind: Don’t see me, don’t see me.
Ji Yunshu glanced down and saw her burying her head like an ostrich, which instantly amused him. He chuckled softly and patted her back, saying, “Alright, get up now. We’re about to dock.”
Liu Wuyi didn’t respond.
She chose to continue playing dead.
“If you lie on the boat like that, you might catch a chill from the dampness. Come on, get up.” Ji Yunshu leaned closer to her ear, coaxing gently, and placed his hand on the back of her exposed neck, stroking it softly to offer a bit of warmth.
Finally, the boat reached the shore.
Now, whether Liu Wuyi wanted to or not, she had to get up.
“Classmate, are you really okay?” Before they even stepped off the boat, the people on the shore crowded around them.
“No need, really, I’m perfectly fine! Nothing happened at all.” Suppressing the urge to sneeze, Liu Wuyi patted her chest and insisted stubbornly.
From the teasing and laughter of the security guards and surrounding classmates, she learned that she was the second person in Haicheng University’s history to fall into the Weilan River.
Liu Wuyi felt like crying but had no tears.
On the way back to the dormitory, Liu Wuyi tried several times to strike up a conversation with Ji Yunshu, but he only responded with a few noncommittal “hmms,” his replies perfunctory.
The surroundings were eerily quiet, creating a strange tension between them.
“You’re afraid of water, aren’t you?”
After a long silence, Ji Yunshu suddenly spoke, startling Liu Wuyi and making her heart flutter. Hearing his words, she felt inexplicably nervous and somewhat guilty.
“Now! I’m not afraid anymore.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Ji Yunshu stopped walking and frowned at her. “But what happened earlier was really dangerous. If you’re afraid of water, you should stay away from it.”
“And why were you so protective of that camera earlier? Are the photos inside that important?”
After saying this, Ji Yunshu walked ahead on his own, ignoring Liu Wuyi, as if he was angry.
Panicked, Liu Wuyi hurried to catch up, but she didn’t dare tell him directly because the photos included some secretly taken pictures of him, and because they contained their first photo together.
What if Ji Yunshu misunderstood and thought she was a creep!
“Boating is a tradition at Haicheng University, right? I was curious, so I invited you to come along. I never expected to fall into the water. When we got on the boat, the water looked so shallow, and with you by my side, I wasn’t scared at all. But the moment I fell in, I panicked.”
“And the scenery was so beautiful today. Who knows if we’ll ever see it again? Of course, I had to protect the photos.” After saying this, Liu Wuyi forced out a couple of ingratiating laughs, hoping to gloss over the issue.
However, Ji Yunshu didn’t agree with her perspective, and his words carried a hint of reprimand. “Life is precious, don’t you understand? What you did was unacceptable.”
“I understand, I understand! I promise I won’t do it again!” As she spoke, she raised three fingers, making a vow to the heavens.
Heaven only knew why Ji Yunshu, who was only a year older than her, always spoke with a maturity beyond his years.
Liu Wuyi didn’t understand, but she knew how to kneel and apologize!
Arriving once again at Ji Yunshu’s dormitory building, Liu Wuyi’s car was parked not far away, and the two of them came to a stop.
It was time to say goodbye.
Liu Wuyi felt reluctant, her face full of sorrow as she inwardly lamented: Why does time with Yunshu always pass so quickly?
So, Liu Wuyi didn’t speak, only gazed at her quietly.
Just wanting to look at her a little longer.
