- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 17 - Wei Lan River: The Aegean Sea in Haida Students' Hearts
November weather brought sharp temperature swings mornings and evenings retained a lingering chill even with two layers, while midday heat made even a single long sleeve unbearable. So many people wore short sleeves on the streets, one might think summer had returned.
Now, at dusk, the wind picked up, scattering the day’s residual warmth.
Ji Yunshu’s dorm was unusually lively. Even Ye Shiqi, who was usually out working part-time, had unexpectedly returned. Noticing that Ji Yunshu seemed to have dressed up carefully, Ye Shiqi asked in a sharp tone, “Yunshu, you’ve put so much effort into your look today, do you have a date?”
Her almost aggressive question plunged the room into silence. The other two roommates glanced first at Ji Yunshu, who remained expressionless and absorbed in her phone, then exchanged uncertain looks, unsure how to respond.
An awkward tension filled the dorm.
Fortunately, one of the roommates, Su Yuanyuan, was skilled at defusing tension. She chuckled and teased, “The way you asked that, anyone would think you’re picking a fight. And do you even need to ask? Just look at Yunshu that dreamy, lovestruck expression. When have you ever seen her look like this before?”
“Is that so?” Ye Shiqi’s expression darkened. She tapped on her shattered, secondhand smartphone bought for just 200 yuan and then held it up in front of Ji Yunshu. “Yunshu, I saw you guys when I was working a temp job at Benbang Cuisine. Is this photo on the campus forum that interesting junior you’ve been hanging out with? I’m not entirely sure.”
Ji Yunshu recognized the person in the photo instantly. She replied with a noncommittal “Hmm,” showing no interest in continuing the conversation.
Su Yuanyuan, who was sitting closer to Ji Yunshu, caught a glimpse of the blurry photo through the spiderweb cracks on the screen and joked, “Since when did you get so nosy, Ye Shiqi?”
Even with the pixelated, mosaic-covered faces, Su Yuanyuan could make out the luxury car parked beside Liu Wuyi. She whistled in admiration, “That junior’s got some serious status driving an Aston Martin, a car worth millions! Rich, seriously rich!”
Zhang Jiajia, who had been quiet until now, widened her eyes dramatically at Su Yuanyuan’s comment and exclaimed, “OMG, could I ever earn enough in this lifetime to afford a car like that? Damn, so the real dividing line in life is the amniotic fluid you’re born in!”
Ye Shiqi’s face grew even stormier. “Yunshu, no offense, but you’re a scholarship student who has to stretch every penny. Don’t you think it’s a bit inappropriate for you to hang out with a rich heiress like her?”
Her words cast a ghostly silence over the room once more.
Su Yuanyuan, the dorm leader and the oldest among them, held the most authority. With her fiery temper and blunt honesty, she had no patience for anyone stirring up trouble or disrupting the dorm’s harmony. Hearing Ye Shiqi’s remark, her expression instantly soured her goodwill exhausted.
“Ye Shiqi, they haven’t even started anything yet. Don’t speak carelessly. Besides, who are you looking down on? Our Yunshu is so outstanding, she’s a perfect match for this junior. What could be unsuitable? I fully support it.”
Zhang Jiajia quickly backed up the dorm leader, “I support it with both hands and feet.”
Amid the fervent support from her two roommates, Ji Yunshu remained silent, her expression calm and unreadable, as if their discussion had nothing to do with her.
Just as Ye Shiqi was about to say more, a sudden ringtone interrupted her.
Ji Yunshu answered the phone with one hand, a jacket tucked under her elbow, while using her other hand to open the door. By the time the familiar voice on the other end reached her ears, she had already walked the long corridor of the dormitory building and arrived at the staircase leading out.
Watching her hurried departure, a shadow of something unreadable flickered in Ye Shiqi’s eyes.
“I’m already under the streetlamp at the main entrance of your dorm. Where are you?” The voice on the phone was that of a young girl, brimming with excitement.
“Wait for me!”
Liu Wuyi heard the voice she had been thinking about all night and couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.
Then, the sound of soft panting reached her ears, so vivid it felt like someone was gently kissing her earlobe, making it tingle and sending shivers down her spine. Instinctively, she wanted to pull the phone away, but her other hand tightened its grip, afraid of missing a single word. She even turned up the volume.
The tips of her ears gradually flushed red.
“Turn around.”
Liu Wuyi instinctively obeyed, turning around. With just one glance, she froze.
Ji Yunshu, dressed in a white dress, was walking toward her slowly. Each step felt as though it was treading directly on her heart, making it race wildly.
At that moment, an autumn breeze swept through the path, lifting the fiery fallen leaves carpeting the ground and gently swaying the hem of her dress. Her aura was as elegant and noble as the osmanthus blossoms in autumn.
A line of poetry immediately surfaced in her mind: “Knowing it’s a heavenly seed, it drifts and falls into the deep, rocky cave.”
“Wuyi, have you been waiting long?” Ji Yunshu stopped before her, smiling softly as she asked.
Liu Wuyi, still dazed, could only stare blankly into her eyes, though her heart was roiling with emotion: Ji Yunshu truly had lively, expressive eyes clear and bright, as if they held galaxies within them, making one unable to resist falling into their depths.
“What are you thinking about, staring so blankly?” Ji Yunshu chuckled lightly and waved a hand in front of her face.
A faint, intoxicating fragrance wafted over, snapping Liu Wuyi back to reality. The tips of her ears, hidden beneath her hair, flushed a deep red.
“Mmm, nothing.” Liu Wuyi mumbled.
Ji Yunshu found her utterly adorable and couldn’t resist teasing her. “Really, nothing? Then why is your face so red?”
This was something she had never done before, yet it felt so natural with this girl.
Liu Wuyi let out a soft “ah” and hurriedly pulled out a small mirror from her bag, examining her reflection. She thought to herself: Aside from a slight redness at the tips of my ears, nothing else is red!
She tilted her face slightly, trying to discreetly check if the redness had faded, but instead, she caught sight of the amusement sparkling in Ji Yunshu’s beautiful eyes.
At this, Liu Wuyi’s face visibly flushed red, and her heartbeat quickened even more. Each thump felt like a booming drum, deafeningly loud, making her wonder if she had developed an irregular heartbeat.
Subconsciously, she covered her eyes with one hand while clumsily stuffing the small mirror back into her bag with the other, stammering, “Let’s go, let’s go. We should head to the boat.”
“Can you even see the road like that?”
Realizing the foolishness of her actions, Liu Wuyi stole a glance in Ji Yunshu’s direction. Seeing that Ji Yunshu had tactfully averted her gaze, she immediately lowered her hand.
As they walked, the two of them gradually drew closer, a result of Liu Wuyi’s subtle maneuvering.
However, what she didn’t know was that from Ji Yunshu’s perspective, she looked like a clever little puppy, trotting toward her with an awkward, clumsy gait, all while trying to cover her own eyes like the proverbial ostrich. It was endearing, yet undeniably silly.
It wasn’t until they boarded the boat that Liu Wuyi finally let out a sigh of relief, inwardly cursing herself: If I act this foolishly again, I swear I’ll turn into a dog!
The scenery at Haida University was among the finest of all universities nationwide. The Weilan River encircled the entire campus, and taking a boat ride along the river to admire the campus had long been a cherished tradition at Haida. If Liu Wuyi hadn’t planned ahead and reserved a spot early on the official website, they would never have secured a place.
A long silence lingered between them. Liu Wuyi still felt somewhat awkward and clumsy around the person she liked. She repeatedly psyched herself up to speak, but after much deliberation, she couldn’t piece together the right words. In the end, it was Ji Yunshu who broke the silence. “Do you know the story behind Weilan River?”
Seeing Liu Wuyi’s puzzled expression, Ji Yunshu began to recount the tale.
“The first president of Haicheng University was once a student here herself. During her university years, she met her girlfriend. Both were prominent figures on campus, and their relationship was the talk of the town. But as graduation approached, their relationship suddenly soured. They went from being hailed as a ‘match made in heaven’ to parting ways, never to see each other again.”
“The senior later gave up a promising future and chose to stay at the university as a faculty member, guarding the memories of their once-beautiful relationship.”
“Later, when the university decided to name the newly excavated river, this senior pushed through all opposition and named it Weilan River. Coincidentally, not long after, she and her girlfriend were reunited as if by fate. I never heard how their story ended, but I know this river holds special significance for couples.” Ji Yunshu smiled at her, leaving the rest unsaid.
Liu Wuyi understood Ji Yunshu’s unspoken implication.
Weilan River was the “Sea of Love” in the hearts of Haicheng University students.
She also understood why Jiang Lehan had been so surprised yesterday upon hearing that they had plans to boat on Weilan River.
But why had Yunshu agreed without hesitation to come boating on Weilan River with her? Was it because she had promised to accept the next invitation, or was it because she had developed even a slight fondness for her? Liu Wuyi didn’t dare to dwell on it too deeply. She hoped it was the latter, but she had no experience in such matters to be sure. All she could do was take things one step at a time.
After all, Liu Wuyi didn’t dare to gamble. She was terrified that if she broke the boundary of friendship and let Ji Yunshu know her feelings, only to find that Yunshu didn’t feel the same way, their relationship would drift apart.
Just the thought of such a possibility was enough to make her heart ache unbearably.
At that moment, the evening breeze brushed against their cheeks, gently caressing their long, soft hair.
“Look, the sunset!” Following Ji Yunshu’s direction, she gazed into the distance.
But the beauty of the sunset wasn’t enough to captivate her, for she noticed their reflections appearing in the river, a scene more breathtaking than any magnificent landscape she had ever witnessed.
Their silhouettes seemed to embrace each other, basking in the lingering warmth of the sunset, the gentleness of the evening breeze, and the liveliness of the fish, savoring every ordinary sight and sound of life.
Romantic and beautiful.
