- Did That A Get His Wife Back Today?
- Chapter 14 - The First Confrontation Between Rivals
[Liu Wuyi: Senior!!! I think I just saw someone with a silhouette very similar to yours, but I’m not entirely sure if it’s you.]
The message was followed by an adorable puppy sticker.
[Ji Yunshu: I’m currently having a meal at the local cuisine restaurant near the school. Where are you?]
Bai Wanzhou noticed Ji Yunshu picking up her phone to reply to the message, a faint smile gracing her lips. Bai Wanzhou’s expression gradually stiffened, barely maintaining its composure. She casually picked up the water pitcher on the table and poured water for Ji Yunshu, asking as if it were nothing, “Have you made any new friends recently, Yunshu? I’ve noticed you’ve been chatting on WeChat quite often lately.”
Upon hearing this, Ji Yunshu looked up at her and set her phone down as she spoke, “I added a junior who’s really fun to talk to.”
As she spoke, she took a sip from her water glass. “Did bringing my phone into the lab disrupt your progress on the project?”
Bai Wanzhou quickly waved her hands in denial. “No, no, it’s just that you never used to bring your phone into the lab before. Lately, I’ve seen you with it every time. I was just surprised to see you’ve become someone who can’t put their phone down.”
“Was it her who just texted you? You looked really happy, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile like that before.”
Bai Wanzhou felt a twinge of jealousy. After all, they had been classmates for over a year, and Ji Yunshu had always kept a certain distance from her, never truly opening up. The smiles Bai Wanzhou had seen from her were merely polite and superficial.
But the smile just now was different it radiated genuine joy from within, something that couldn’t be faked. For someone like Ji Yunshu, who always maintained a sense of detachment, such a display was truly rare.
Ji Yunshu gave a noncommittal “Mhm” and said nothing more.
“Was it that day?” Was it that Alpha junior who greeted you that day? Or someone else? Bai Wanzhou wanted to press further, but she already found her answer on the spot.
Liu Wuyi approached them and directly interrupted her question. “Senior Yunshu, what a coincidence running into you here! I thought I might’ve mistaken you for someone else.”
“Is this your classmate, Sister Yunshu?” The difference between “senior” and “sister” was just one word, but the implications were vastly different. Liu Wuyi’s ambiguous wording made it clear only to the Alpha sitting across from Ji Yunshu.
This temporarily unnamed Alpha was both amused and irritated by Liu Wuyi’s subtle claim of territory, thinking to herself, They’re just friends, and yet she’s already acting like this.
There’s always a “green tea” every year, but this year there seem to be more than usual.
Ji Yunshu, however, remained completely unaware of the undercurrents between them. She gestured to her companion across the table and said, “It was my classmate here who recommended this place.”
Liu Wuyi asked, “Have you ordered yet? If not, I just tried their Eight-Treasure Duck here, and I thought it was really good.”
Bai Wanzhou was already displeased with their casual, exclusionary conversation but forced down the turbulent emotions in her eyes. Maintaining a calm expression, she interrupted, “Hello, I’m Yunshu’s good friend. My name is Bai Wanzhou.”
She emphasized the words “good friend” loudly and extended her hand, forcing Liu Wuyi to acknowledge her properly.
“Liu Wuyi.”
Liu Wuyi sized up the Alpha before her impeccably styled with precision-cut hair that looked freshly pressed, a carefully curated outfit featuring a Ralph Lauren shirt paired with a collarbone chain, and a hint of perfume lingering in the air.
Seems she came well-prepared!
But fortunately, Liu Wuyi had also come prepared.
Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but feel grateful for Jiang Lehan’s foresight.
The moment their hands clasped, Liu Wuyi felt an unprecedented pressure from the other’s grip.
Damn, is this person out of their mind? Why squeeze so hard?
But in situations like this, the first to let go would be admitting defeat.
A tense atmosphere slowly enveloped them as they stood locked in a silent standoff. It wasn’t until the server arrived with their dishes that Ji Yunshu softly reminded them, “Are you two planning to hold hands like this forever? The server is here to serve the dishes. Wuyi, have you eaten? Why not sit down and have a bit more? It’s my treat today.”
Their table was set for four. As she spoke, Ji Yunshu pulled out the chair beside her and patted it, signaling for Liu Wuyi to sit.
Liu Wuyi was someone who knew exactly how to seize an opportunity and adapt to the situation. Seeing her chance, she immediately released Bai Wanzhou’s hand and took the seat, leaving no room for Bai Wanzhou to politely refuse.
Watching Bai Wanzhou open her mouth only to close it again, visibly frustrated and speechless, Liu Wuyi felt utterly triumphant.
This must be what they call the fierce competitive drive between rivals in love.
Suddenly, Ji Yunshu seemed to realize her action might have been inappropriate making a decision without consulting her companion was indeed rather impolite. A hint of apology flickered across her face.
“Sorry, Wanzhou, I let my friend sit down without asking you first.”
“Senior Bai Wanzhou, I saw you at the freshman orientation that day. I was the junior who greeted Yunshu. Since we already know each other, I’m sure you don’t mind, right?” Liu Wuyi cut in, subtly blocking Ji Yunshu’s line of sight to them as she shot Bai Wanzhou a smug, triumphant look.
Truly two-faced.
Her tactics were clumsy, yet Bai Wanzhou found herself powerless to counter.
After all, with things put so bluntly, if Bai Wanzhou refused, she’d come off as petty. If she agreed, she’d be swallowing her pride. Stuck in this dilemma for a while, she finally relented, her words tinged with barely suppressed irritation, “It’s fine. I don’t mind.”
Sitting beside Ji Yunshu, breathing in her unique, delicate fragrance, Liu Wuyi felt almost lightheaded. Her gaze drifted aimlessly into the distance, her thoughts wandering far away.
Noticing Liu Wuyi’s lack of movement after a while, Ji Yunshu leaned in and whispered curiously by her ear, “Is there nothing you’d like to eat?”
The soft breath brushing against Liu Wuyi’s ear sent a shiver through her pores. She jolted instinctively, then let out a confused “Huh?” clearly having missed what Ji Yunshu had just said.
“Didn’t you say the Eight-Treasure Duck was delicious earlier? If you like it, have some more.” With that, Ji Yunshu used the serving chopsticks to place several pieces of meat into her bowl.
Liu Wuyi’s eyes widened instantly, her inner voice screaming: Yunshu served me food!!!
Even though it was made with the same ingredients, by the same chef, the dish served by Ji Yunshu tasted exceptionally delicious.
Bai Wanzhou frowned at her exaggerated reaction, thinking to herself: Is this girl a starving ghost reincarnated or what?
Seeing the eight-treasure duck about to be devoured by Liu Wuyi, Bai Wanzhou swiftly snatched the most delicious duck leg right from under her chopsticks and deliberately ate it bite by bite in front of her.
Liu Wuyi maintained a polite smile on the surface, but inwardly she was fuming: Is this person still in elementary school?
After that, Ji Yunshu stopped serving food to Liu Wuyi, and the atmosphere became much more harmonious, lasting until the end of the meal.
Seizing the moment, Liu Wuyi invited Ji Yunshu for a post-meal stroll, hoping to deepen their connection. Given enough time and the right mood, she planned to confess her feelings.
But as the saying goes, “The ideal is full, but reality is thin.”” This time, Bai Wanzhou played it smart and immediately suggested they needed to return to the lab to fix the unresolved bugs from the morning.
Without a second thought, Ji Yunshu gave Liu Wuyi an apologetic look, clearly conveying, “Sorry.”
Jiang Lehan, who had been eavesdropping nearby for a while, saw Liu Wuyi about to say more and suddenly chimed in, “Liu Wuyi, why are you taking so long in the restroom? I’ve been waiting for you forever so you’re here!”
Liu Wuyi: “…”Why does Cheng Yaojin always show up halfway?”*
Hearing this, Ji Yunshu breathed a sigh of relief and said, “Oh, your friend is waiting for you! We’ll head off first then.”
Liu Wuyi didn’t respond, only letting out a regretful sigh before lowering her head to fiddle with her fingers. She occasionally glanced up at Ji Yunshu, looking exactly like the stray dog she had adopted last year, the kind that would wag its tail all day with a little affection but whine pitifully if you gently refused the bone it brought you.
The puppy’s emotions were vividly personified in that moment.
Seeing her pitiful expression, Ji Yunshu couldn’t bear it and softly reassured her, “Next time you invite me, I’ll definitely come.”
“Alright then, you have to come next time!” Her tone was full of grievance, her eyes pleading, evoking sympathy.
Bai Wanzhou: “…”
How can a grown Alpha act so affected and coy?
“They’re gone now, no use staring. Anyone would think you’re a stone of longing for a wife,” Jiang Lehan slung an arm over Liu Wuyi’s shoulder, clicking her tongue in amusement.
Liu Wuyi, irritated by Jiang Lehan’s cheeky grin, shot her a glare, wondering if she was a stumbling block in her pursuit.
Jiang Lehan guiltily rubbed her nose and chuckled awkwardly, “Don’t glare at me. Let’s go back to our table, and I’ll explain everything. Would I ever steer you wrong?”
“I’m your strategist, you know? Do you even understand what a strategist does?”
“When pursuing someone, you can’t be too relentless. You need to know when to advance and when to retreat, or you’ll just annoy them.”
Liu Wuyi eyed her skeptically: “You’ve never pursued anyone yourself. How convincing can your advice be?”
Jiang Lehan grew more confident in her reasoning, slapping her hand emphatically as she launched into her explanation: “Don’t doubt me! Even without firsthand experience, I know how to analyze these things.”
“Don’t you get that distance creates beauty? Looking beyond the surface, attraction isn’t just built through daily interaction, it also relies on imagination.”
“And what exactly is a sense of boundaries? The way you’re acting, an Alpha relentlessly pursuing an Omega anyone who doesn’t know better would think you’re a creep!”
“Really?”
“Absolutely.”
Jiang Lehan’s words seemed to make some sense, and Liu Wuyi’s resolve began to waver.
What Liu Wuyi didn’t know was that the last image on Jiang Lehan’s darkened phone screen, lying on the table, was from a very popular lifestyle-sharing platform in the country. The search history displayed a few entries like this:
How to pursue the Omega you like?
Several ways to pursue your crush. Tips for interacting with an Omega.
Among the posts Jiang Lehan had bookmarked, the phrase “take it step by step” was repeatedly emphasized. She had taken this advice and applied it directly, analyzing the situation for Liu Wuyi with apparent expertise.
Others’ experiences always hold some truth, Jiang Lehan thought to herself.
Liu Wuyi fell into deep thought.
At that moment, Jiang Lehan’s gaze landed on the application form on the table, and she immediately came up with another brilliant idea. Excitedly, she said, “The friend who gave me this music club application form is the club’s leader. Their team has submitted a performance project combining Chinese and Western instruments, and they’re still short one person who can play a Western instrument. Since you play the piano, I signed you up. She wants you to report tomorrow.”
“Most importantly, tomorrow at 10 a.m., the club is retrieving the instruments they lent out. The logistics team will definitely be there. You know what that means.”
At 2 a.m. that night, Liu Wuyi lay in bed, wide awake, replaying Jiang Lehan’s words from earlier in the day. After much deliberation, she remained skeptical.
Brimming with questions and needing to vent, she realized she had few friends to turn to. Worried about disturbing her Omega mother at such a late hour, she decisively called her Alpha mother, who was far away in Beijing.
In the quiet of the night, even the slightest disturbance stood out sharply. The abrupt ringing of the phone caused Liu Xiao to reflexively open her eyes. Realizing it was her phone, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Rubbing her throbbing temples, she answered Liu Wuyi’s call. Immediately, Liu Wuyi’s enthusiastic voice burst into her ears, “Mom, Mom!”
The repeated calls made Liu Xiao’s temples throb. Though visibly irritated, her words carried only resignation. “Get to the point!”
Liu Wuyi coughed twice, cleared her throat, and asked with great seriousness, “Mom! Is it true that beauty in human relationships comes from maintaining a certain distance?”
“You called me in the middle of the night just to talk about this meaningless nonsense?” Liu Xiao sighed in exasperation after waiting so long for such a question.
Not getting a straightforward answer, Liu Wuyi complained, “Just say yes or no. Why add all that extra commentary?”
“I haven’t even said much, and you’re already impatient.”
“Never mind, asking you was a waste of time.” With that, Liu Wuyi hung up abruptly, without another word.
Liu Xiao: “…”
What Liu Wuyi didn’t know was that after she decisively ended the call, Liu Xiao muttered “idiot” under her breath at her phone before dialing her assistant.
