Did That A Get His Wife Back Today? - Chapter 12
Back home, during dinner, Liu Wuyi brought up the incident with her mother. Just as she had expected, her mother laughed at her for quite a while, implying throughout the conversation how a grown Alpha like her could be so naive, failing to see through such a simple scam.
At the time, she had indeed been too nervous to notice the flaws in the scheme. The people around her had probably guessed the old woman’s trick but didn’t want to get involved, so no one had bothered to warn her.
Except for Ji Yunshu, that Omega girl.
Late at night, Liu Wuyi tossed and turned in bed. The moment she closed her eyes, the events of the day flashed through her mind like a revolving lantern, the fair complexion, the almond-shaped eyes glistening like water, the wildly beating heart, and the captivating scent of osmanthus.
With a sudden “thump,” Liu Wuyi pushed the blanket aside and sat up abruptly, clutching her chest with both hands. Sleep was the last thing on her mind. Even though the air conditioning was on, she still felt unbearably hot and restless.
She picked up her phone and, as if guided by some inexplicable impulse, opened the chat window with Ji Yunshu. The messages showed that after Ji Yunshu had left the café, Liu Wuyi had sent a greeting, to which Ji Yunshu had politely replied with a “Hello” an hour later, before the conversation came to a halt.
Liu Wuyi was the type to wear her heart on her sleeve and was a bit impatient. When Ji Yunshu had said she would accept the friend request later, Liu Wuyi had actually waited until Ji Yunshu stepped out of the café and immediately sent the request.
【Liu Wuyi: Thank you so much for today! You were the first person to step up and warn me!】
Liu Wuyi had agonized over this message for a long time. She had intended to draft it in the chat and send it at noon that day, but as she tried to exit, her finger slipped and accidentally hit “send.”
!!!
Oh no, help!
Out of courtesy, an Alpha really shouldn’t be messaging an Omega they weren’t close to so late at night. Realizing she had done something foolish, she wanted to quickly retract the message before the other person saw it. But in her flustered state, she accidentally tapped “delete” instead.
Just as she was scratching her head in frustration over her own stupidity, her phone vibrated, and the screen lit up.
【Ji Yunshu: You’re welcome! Get some rest! [head pat]】
Liu Wuyi’s face flushed bright red as she held her phone, grinning uncontrollably. She felt even more heated and restless. Kicking the blanket aside, she stood on the bed and swiftly went through a set of military-style exercises, unable to suppress a silent scream.
If it had been daytime, she probably would have had to run three or five laps around the neighborhood to calm down.
The National Day holiday passed by in the blink of an eye, and before she knew it, it was the last day of the break. Liu Wuyi had to return to her apartment to prepare for university classes. Before leaving, she packed the food her mother had repeatedly insisted she take, worried that her food-obsessed childhood friend would go hungry.
Back at the apartment, Liu Wuyi found the Alpha her supposedly “starving” friend lounging on the couch, clearly still sulking.
“Jiang Lehan, you’re back early. Didn’t you say you’d arrive in the evening?”
“I changed my flight, got a problem with that?” There was no way she would admit to Liu Wuyi that she had changed to an earlier flight back to Haicheng to avoid dealing with her family’s elders.
“I brought you some freshly baked meat mooncakes, made by my mom.” Liu Wuyi shook the bag she was holding and placed it in front of Jiang Lehan as if presenting a treasure.
“Even if you brought ten meat mooncakes, I wouldn’t pay you any attention.”
“I also brought eight-treasure rice. Will that get your attention?” Liu Wuyi pulled out another bag she had been hiding behind her back and tossed it onto the table in front of Jiang Lehan.
“Yes, yes, yes! You should’ve said so earlier. I’m starving, the food on the plane was awful, and I barely ate two bites.” Jiang Lehan decided to set aside their personal grievances for the moment, retracting her earlier statement. There was no point in taking it out on food.
On the first official day of the new semester, the school held a welcome ceremony.
The ceremony took place on the sports field, where plastic chairs were arranged in a circle on the grass, forming a makeshift stage. Jiang Lehan, who loved lively events, dragged Liu Wuyi to the field early. At that time, only a handful of people were scattered around, so they managed to snag seats with an excellent view.
The welcome ceremony started off rather dull, with various school officials delivering tedious, bureaucratic speeches that nearly put Liu Wuyi to sleep.
“Next, we invite the freshman representative from the Mathematics program of the School of Mathematics and Statistics to deliver a speech.” The announcement boomed across the field, full of energy and enthusiasm, jolting Liu Wuyi, who had just closed her eyes for a quick nap, wide awake. She immediately turned her gaze toward the center of the circle.
To her surprise, she recognized the person stepping onto the stage.
The freshman representative turned out to be none other than Jing Yao!
“Is she really that good at academics?” Liu Wuyi turned to ask Jiang Lehan, who was busy scrolling on her phone, still somewhat astonished.
“Of course! She won a gold medal in the Mathematical Olympiad during her second year of high school and was directly admitted to both Jing City University and Haicheng University because of it.”
That was indeed an achievement worthy of envy.
“Hey, Jiang Lehan, is she staring at us?” Liu Wuyi nudged Jiang Lehan with her elbow as she asked.
“Who?”
Jiang Lehan was in the middle of an intense online battle with a mindless hater of her favorite celebrity and hadn’t yet emerged victorious. Without looking up, she responded half-heartedly.
“Jing Yao.”
The name sent a jolt through Jiang Lehan. She immediately put down her phone, looked up at Jing Yao, and blinked several times to make sure Liu Wuyi wasn’t mistaken. Leaning closer to Liu Wuyi’s ear, she whispered, “Oh my god, it really seems like it. Do you think she actually holds a grudge against us?”
“Does Jing Yao’s face look darker to you?” Liu Wuyi hissed softly, increasingly convinced that the look in Jing Yao’s eyes was filled with hostility.
“It’s not your imagination. She definitely looks pissed like her eyes are drilling holes through us.” Jiang Lehan grew even more certain that Jing Yao bore them some resentment, secretly glaring at them in front of everyone.
“Let’s just pretend we don’t notice. It’s a society ruled by law she can’t do anything to us. Besides, I think our families are actually quite close with the Jings.”
“Really?”
“I casually asked my mom about it during the National Day holiday, and she told me Jing Yao even came to my fifth birthday party.”
“You didn’t tell me this earlier! On my way home, I naively asked my mom if she had the ability to compete with the Jing family. She thought I’d caused trouble again and almost beat me.” Jiang Lehan raised her hand, pretending to hit Liu Wuyi, but a sharp glare from Jing Yao on stage made her freeze. Unsure what had displeased the young mistress this time, she reluctantly lowered her hand, straightened her posture, and didn’t dare move.
Finally, Jing Yao stepped off the stage, and the oppressive feeling of being watched dissipated. Both of them breathed a sigh of relief.
“Next up, we invite Ji Yunshu, a sophomore from the School of Artificial Information Science and Technology, majoring in Computer Science and Technology, to perform the renowned She ethnic dance ‘Spring in March’ for our freshmen.”
Ji Yunshu?!
Hearing the familiar name, Liu Wuyi instinctively scanned the center of the lawn. When her gaze settled on the figure standing there, she froze.
A girl holding a She drum and dressed in traditional She attire emerged slowly from the crowd, a bright smile on her face. Soon, the rich, culturally resonant melody began to echo across the vast, vibrant land.
Then, she merged with the rhythm. Under the sunlight, amid the admiring gazes and exclamations of the audience, she danced gracefully like the flame-red royal poinciana blooming across the open fields, or a phoenix soaring through the heavens.
Utterly free.
Liu Wuyi felt as if her heart had been struck, its beats rising and falling in sync with the jingling of the silver ornaments on Ji Yunshu’s costume. Only when the music ended and enthusiastic applause erupted did she snap back to reality and join in clapping.
“Hey, this Omega is amazing, she’s quite the celebrity at our school,” Jiang Lehan patted Liu Wuyi, leaning close to her ear as usual to share the latest gossip she’d just acquired. “I’ve heard she’s ranked first in both GPA and comprehensive evaluation in the computer science major, almost achieving a perfect score. People call her ‘Sister Perfect GPA.’ In her freshman year, she won a national award in an academic competition, a special prize in a corporate-sponsored contest held at our school, and another national award for some project the name was too long for me to remember. Anyway, she has many achievements like that.”
“The key point is, she’s still single. Judging by today’s atmosphere, she’s bound to attract a lot of suitors.” Jiang Lehan deliberately lowered her voice, whispering right into Liu Wuyi’s ear.
Where there was gossip, Jiang Lehan was never far behind. She had actually learned about Ji Yunshu before I did. A flicker of jealousy passed through Liu Wuyi’s heart.
Although she had interacted with Ji Yunshu quite a bit during the National Day holiday and they were gradually becoming familiar, her understanding of Ji Yunshu was nowhere near as detailed as Jiang Lehan’s.
So many people were watching her.
She was truly dazzling!
The surrounding noise faded away as Liu Wuyi met Ji Yunshu’s smiling eyes, eyes that sparkled like stars, making her heart jolt and leaving her momentarily flustered.
Thump-thump!
She’s walking toward me!
Thump-thump!
“Senior Yunshu, your dance was incredible,” Jiang Lehan greeted Ji Yunshu, launching into her peacock-like socializing routine.
“Thank you.”
Seeing Ji Yunshu looking momentarily bewildered, Liu Wuyi gave Jiang Lehan a hard pat and explained on her behalf, “This is my friend. She’s just like this, no ill intentions.”
“But you danced really well today. The dance was quite beautiful, what kind of dance is it?”
“Didn’t the announcement just say it’s a She ethnic dance?” Jiang Lehan whispered quietly into Liu Wuyi’s ear, sounding a bit puzzled.
Realizing her mistake, Liu Wuyi smiled awkwardly at Ji Yunshu.
“Are you from the She ethnic group? This dance seems quite rare,” Liu Wuyi said, her words disjointed and clearly just making conversation.
“My Omega mother is from the She ethnic group. She taught me this dance when I was little.”
“Yunshu, it’s almost time for the gathering. Do you want to go change first?” An unfamiliar Alpha emerged from behind Liu Wuyi, abruptly cutting off their conversation.
With an Alpha’s innate intuition, Liu Wuyi sensed this Alpha’s hostility toward her and his affection for Ji Yunshu.
“Alright,” Ji Yunshu replied, following the Alpha as he led her away.
From start to finish, the two of them had only exchanged a few words, along with a wave from Ji Yunshu before she left.
Heart shattered.
