Did That A Get His Wife Back Today? - Chapter 11
On the first day of October, autumn quietly arrived. The morning air had shed the summer heat, carrying a hint of coolness. Those who had planned long trips for the National Day holiday were already on their way, heading toward distant places. As for those who stayed behind, such a beautiful moment called for a good, long sleep yet there’s always someone determined to ruin such tranquility.
“Ah!”
A scream pierced the sky, followed by the sound of a door being thrown open, shattering the apartment’s peace.
“It’s over, it’s over! Liu Wuyi, stop sleeping! Something huge has happened, we need to pack our bags and flee back to Jing City!” Jiang Lehan scrambled onto Liu Wuyi’s bed, shaking her vigorously as she slept.
“Let go! What’s wrong with you, acting crazy so early in the morning?”
Liu Wuyi was jolted awake by the noise, thinking something serious had happened. She immediately broke free from Jiang Lehan’s grasp, turned, and reached for her phone on the nightstand. Glancing at the screen, she snapped, “Are you insane? It’s only eight o’clock eight in the morning! Get out of my room! If you’re not tired, I am!”
Then, lying back down, she pulled the covers over her head in one smooth motion.
“Seriously, stop sleeping! The sky is falling! Do you know who Jing Yao is? She’s incredibly powerful! We actually offended her, we’re done for!”
“Who is she? Stop dragging it out. If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise, get lost.” A groggy voice emerged from under the blankets.
“The Jing family of Haicheng, the local powerhouse in Haicheng. The Jing family that monopolizes the national real estate business, the one whose commercial empire has even expanded to Europe and America.”
“Damn!!!”
At the mention of the Haicheng Jing family, Liu Wuyi was instantly wide awake. After all, the Jing family’s wealth was famously immense even the combined resources of the Jiang and Liu families couldn’t compare. Yet, on the first day of school, the two of them had pinned Jing Yao against a wall and humiliated her. And just last night, Liu Wuyi, stubborn as ever, had insisted on playing “Always Online” when Jing Yao wanted to hear “Fireflies Are Flying.” Thinking back, Liu Wuyi really wanted to slap her impulsive self.
“Plus, she’s a Taekwondo black belt, eighth dan! Why didn’t she fight back when we were beating her up that day?”
“Right, why didn’t she fight back? With her level, there’s no way she’d be pinned against a wall by me, unable to move.”
The more Liu Wuyi thought about it, the more something felt off. She emerged from under the covers again and smacked Jiang Lehan on the back of the head.
“Why did you have to go digging into her background? Couldn’t we have just pretended not to know?”
Rubbing the back of her head, Jiang Lehan said pitifully, “I was curious! The friend who invited me to the party yesterday comes from a background similar to ours, and even she kept calling Jing Yao ‘Young Miss.’ Everyone clearly revolved around Jing Yao. So last night, I asked my friend privately and found out she’s actually Jing Yao’s distant cousin. Wouldn’t you be curious too?”
“Curiosity killed the cat. Please remember that.”
“Besides, her family originally planned to send her to study in the U.S. she even got an offer. Who would’ve thought she’d suddenly decide to attend Haicheng University? My friend was pretty shocked too.”
“What should we do? Do you think we’ll get jumped and beaten to a pulp?” Jiang Lehan grabbed Liu Wuyi’s shoulders, ready to shake her again.
“Stop, stop shaking! The Jing family of Haicheng is a prominent clan after all. Generally speaking, they wouldn’t stoop to such underhanded tactics.”
“But the way she returned to the dorm that day was anything but ordinary!”
“All I know is, if you don’t get out of my room right now, you won’t have to wait for Jing Yao. I’ll beat you to a pulp right this instant.” With that, Liu Wuyi kicked Jiang Lehan off the bed, grabbed her by the collar of her pajamas, and tossed her out of the room before slamming the door shut with a loud “bang.”
Leaving Jiang Lehan to ponder the meaning of life in the living room.
“Miss Liu, please have some coffee. I brewed it myself, just for you.” It seemed Jiang Lehan had finally come to her senses, feeling deeply apologetic for waking Liu Wuyi so early in the morning. To make amends, she personally prepared a cup of iced Americano.
Her expression was downright sycophantic.
Liu Wuyi wasn’t one to hold grudges. After catching a bit more sleep, she had long since shaken off her irritation and accepted Jiang Lehan’s overly attentive gesture with a resigned air.
Sitting at the table, Liu Wuyi gulped down the coffee when suddenly, her phone beside her began to vibrate.
It was a video call from her Omega mother, Yu Ningshuang.
Setting down her coffee, Liu Wuyi moved to the living room sofa before answering her mother’s call.
“Sweetie, has your school break started? When are you coming home?”
Her mother, as usual, had her phone propped on a stand. Her figure appeared on the screen as she chatted with Liu Wuyi while busily preparing desserts from the looks of it, her favorite savory mooncakes and egg yolk pastries.
It was only then that Liu Wuyi remembered this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival fell within the National Day holiday, and it was tomorrow.
“I’ll head back in a little while.”
“Is Lehan coming back too?”
Jiang Lehan, who had been rummaging around in her room for who-knows-what, heard her name and appeared by Liu Wuyi’s phone in the blink of an eye, greeting her mother: “Auntie Yu, good morning! I’ll be going home for the Mid-Autumn Festival. My mom called earlier urging me to return. It’s just a shame I won’t get to taste your savory mooncakes.”
“No worries! After the break, I’ll have Ayu bring some for you enough to last you!”
Watching Jiang Lehan, a grown Alpha, shamelessly acting cute with her mother, Liu Wuyi felt a surge of mischief. She mimicked Jiang Lehan in a singsong voice, twisting the words: “It’s just a shame I won’t get to taste your savory mooncakes.”
Disgusting.
No sooner had she said it than she burst into laughter herself, relentlessly teasing Jiang Lehan, mimicking her from one side to the other until even her mother on the other end of the call was laughing uncontrollably.
Jiang Lehan didn’t want to engage but found Liu Wuyi’s antics unbearably annoying. She shot her a mock-scolding look and said, “Get lost.”
Then, she aimed a kick at her. Liu Wuyi, as if she had anticipated it, dodged nimbly but ended up fumbling her phone. The camera tilted, capturing the messy dining table and unfortunately, her mother noticed.
“It’s already 11 a.m.! Why are you still having breakfast? This is no good it’s terrible for your health.”
“No, no, I’ve been up for a while. I just haven’t cleared the table yet.” Liu Wuyi’s mind raced as she scrambled to come up with an excuse.
“She’s lying, Auntie! I was the one who got up early, not her. And that mess on the table? That was all me.”
Before Jiang Lehan could finish speaking, Liu Wuyi tossed her phone aside, leaped up, and clamped a hand over Jiang Lehan’s mouth, shouting toward the phone, “Mom, I’ll hang up now!” She even freed a hand to end the video call.
Liu Wuyi had originally promised to drive Jiang Lehan to the airport that afternoon and let her test drive the newly acquired Aston Martin Vantage, experiencing what it meant for brute force and elegance to coexist in perfect harmony.
But now, Liu Wuyi had changed her mind. To teach Jiang Lehan a lesson about the true treachery of human nature, she seized the moment while Jiang Lehan was in the bathroom, slipped out of the house, and drove her beloved car out of the neighborhood.
Sure enough, as soon as she left the neighborhood, Jiang Lehan’s calls started flooding in one after another.
“Liu Wuyi, you’re untrustworthy! You’re a traitor! You’re so cunning, just to get back at me.” On the other end of the line, Jiang Lehan exploded like a string of firecrackers, ranting for what felt like ages. To an outsider, it might have sounded like New Year’s celebrations had come early. She kept repeating the same phrases, and Liu Wuyi couldn’t help but feel a smug satisfaction, another victory in their ongoing rivalry.
“You’d better just take a taxi. I’m not driving you! Bye!” Amid Jiang Lehan’s stream of curses, Liu Wuyi decisively hung up.
As she approached the university district, the road narrowed significantly, but the flow of vehicles and pedestrians gradually increased. For safety’s sake, Liu Wuyi lightly tapped the brakes, slowing down as she prepared to merge into traffic.
Suddenly, an unidentified object darted out from the vehicle’s blind spot.
“Holy crap!”
That looked like a person!
Instinctively, Liu Wuyi slammed on the brakes. Fortunately, she had already reduced her speed significantly minutes earlier, and the car came to a complete stop almost immediately.
Thank goodness for quick reflexes and timely braking, she hadn’t hit the person. Liu Wuyi couldn’t shake the lingering fear, her hands trembling slightly as they gripped the steering wheel.
Taking a deep breath, she unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed the car door open.
“Grandma, are you okay? I don’t think I hit you, did I?” The old woman didn’t respond, merely clutching her leg and moaning in pain. Liu Wuyi felt a twinge of doubt that shouldn’t be the case. If there had been a collision, the car’s sensors would have alerted her.
“What do you mean you didn’t hit me? You definitely did! If it weren’t for the fact that you’re a student, I would’ve called the police already.”
“Here’s what we’ll do, young lady. Just give me some compensation, and I won’t waste your time or press charges. If your school finds out you hit an elderly person, they’d probably expel you.”
The old woman kept crying out in pain, muttering a stream of words that sounded almost considerate, all while gripping the hem of Liu Wuyi’s clothes tightly, as if afraid she might run off.
A small crowd began to gather around them, and Liu Wuyi suddenly felt flustered and unsure of what to do. “That won’t do, Grandma. Let me take you to the hospital to get checked.”
“Really, there’s no need. My granddaughter is waiting for me at home. I have to cook for her. This injury isn’t too serious. If you just cover my medical expenses, I’ll go to the hospital after I’ve made dinner for her. How about that?” The old woman stopped clutching her leg, her eyes darting shrewdly as she stared at Liu Wuyi.
“Alright then, how much do you need?”
“I can see you’re just a student, so I won’t ask for too much. Just around ten thousand will do.”
“But I only have five thousand in cash in the car.”
“You can transfer the rest to my WeChat.” As she spoke, the old woman pulled out a printed QR code from her pocket and pointed at it. “Scan right here.”
At that moment, a voice rang out from behind, growing closer and sounding somewhat familiar: “Classmate, don’t give that person any money!”
But it was already too late.
Just a second before the voice reached her, Liu Wuyi had already scanned the payment to the elderly woman. The moment the woman heard the voice, she took off running. Her swift and agile movements made it clear to anyone watching that there was nothing wrong with her legs. Liu Wuyi naturally realized she had fallen for a scam.
She never thought she would be so easily deceived one day.
“Classmate, that person is a notorious repeat offender. She shows up every year during freshman orientation to pull this scam. I got tricked by her during my first year, too.”
The speaker was an exceptionally beautiful Omega girl. She was panting heavily from running and took a moment to catch her breath before continuing, “I hope I’m not too late.”
“Actually!” Liu Wuyi felt a bit embarrassed. After all, it was her own foolishness that had led to the deception.
“Oh, heavens, I only recognized that elderly woman when I got closer,” the girl said, sounding frustrated.
The roadside was clearly not the best place for a conversation. Liu Wuyi parked her car nearby and found a coffee shop where they could continue talking.
Upon learning that Liu Wuyi had been scammed out of 5,000 yuan, the girl was eager to help. “Five thousand yuan is no small amount. You should report it to the police first, then inform your academic advisor and see what can be done.”
“Why are you smiling?” the girl asked, amused by the sight of someone grinning after being scammed.
“I’m laughing at my own foolishness. Oh well, what’s done is done. After all, when things hit rock bottom, they can only get better. Extremes beget reversal.”
Since the money was already gone and the chances of getting it back were slim, she might as well console herself with that thought.
Liu Wuyi said, “I’m a student at Haida University up ahead. You look like a student too, right?”
“I’m also at Haida University.”
“What a coincidence! What’s your name, and which year are you in?” Liu Wuyi stood up to take the two cappuccinos brought by the server and slid one over to the girl.
The girl chuckled softly and said, “It really is a coincidence. My name is Ji Yunshu. I’m a sophomore majoring in Computer Science.”
Liu Wuyi paused while stirring her coffee and asked curiously, “Is that the ‘Yunshu’ from ‘clouds roll and clouds unfold’?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, I’m a freshman majoring in Popular Music. My name is Liu Wuyi.”
Ji Yunshu thought to herself, I know who you are!
Realizing she might have missed the time she had promised to have dinner with her mother, Liu Wuyi decided not to rush. She took a small sip of her coffee and said, “Well, when I go back to my mom’s place for dinner tonight and tell her about this, she’s definitely going to laugh at me.”
“Senior Yunshu, do you think I’m foolish?” Liu Wuyi asked, smoothing her hair a little self-consciously.
Ji Yunshu laughed lightly. “Not foolish at all. You have a kind heart.”
“Having a kind heart isn’t foolish. Caring about others isn’t foolish. Feeling compassion for someone else’s suffering is even less foolish. On the contrary, I admire your courage. In an unfamiliar environment, most people’s first instinct is to look out for themselves. You’re the first brave soul I’ve met.”
With these words, the distance between them seemed to shrink. Liu Wuyi tapped her phone a couple of times and then slid it over to Ji Yunshu with her slender, well-defined fingers. On the screen was a QR code for adding a contact. “So, Senior Yunshu, can we exchange contact info?”
Ji Yunshu readily agreed and, before leaving, waved his phone with a smile, saying, “Remember to accept it later!”
Once again, the fragrance of osmanthus flowers wafted through the air.
Yet there were no osmanthus trees planted in the café.
