- Chapter 14 - Serious Little Dog
During the latter half of the night, Dong Mo fell into a heavy, groggy sleep, curled up in a corner of the stone bed while holding Xue Qiu.
In the morning, he was awakened by a soft paw patting his cheek. His silver eyes were still filled with a lingering daze as the threatening words Yue Qi had used the night before echoed in his mind.
“Leave Moon Mountain after the Deep Snow Period.”
“Otherwise, the beastmen who come looking for you will probably not be limited to just me.”
The thought of being surrounded by a group of giants with bulging muscles and wild, predatory auras made Dong Mo shudder involuntarily.
Xue Qiu lay obediently in Dong Mo’s arms. Not understanding why he was trembling, the kitten carefully rubbed its small head against his chest.
“I am fine.”
Dong Mo’s heart softened. He patted the little guy’s head, placed it gently on the stone bed, and smoothed out his beast-skin clothes as he got up. Since he had Xue Qiu, he had already made a decision last night. He would safely endure the Deep Snow Period first and then head toward the Mid-Rain Plains. No matter what, he had to find a way to survive.
Holding Xue Qiu in his arms, Dong Mo took the beast-skin bowl to the stream and filled it. He used the icy snow-water to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead. Feeling his greasy hair, he let out a sigh.
“When I come back tonight, I must find a way to take a bath!”
Dong Mo made a major executive decision. The kitten, tucked inside his beast-skins, did not know what a bath was, but hearing him mutter, it echoed with a “Meow.”
Dong Mo poked its little head with a wet finger. “When you grow up a bit more, you will have to take a bath too.”
Xue Qiu shook its head, unhappily shaking off the small water droplets from its fur.
Returning to the cave, he placed the water bowl over the fire. He set Xue Qiu down on a nearby rock, letting the kitten nibble on the last of the snake meat while he opened the livestream. As soon as he pressed the broadcast button, hundreds of viewers rushed in.
[Good morning, Momo!]
[A bit later today than yesterday!]
[Momo, why are your dark circles so heavy? You look so haggard.]
[Your bangs are still wet. What were you doing so early in the morning?]
Dong Mo did not immediately greet the audience. Instead, he pulled up the livestream’s background settings, found the privacy section, and for the first time, set an “Access Permission.” Before long, the viewers already in the room received a system notification:
“This livestream currently only allows followers of the host to enter.”
The title of the livestream also changed to:
“[Permission Stream] Little dog is going to survive today too, okay? Okay.”
The audience was baffled by this sudden move.
[Huh? Why the sudden permission setting?]
[Wow, so you are starting to gatekeep for fans now?]
[Momo, doing this might block out some potential viewer traffic.]
[Did something happen?]
After checking twice to ensure the permission settings were working correctly, Dong Mo closed the interface and returned to the screen. He gave all the viewers his familiar, bright smile.
“Good morning, brothers and sisters! Sorry, I am a bit late today.”
“Today’s livestream is a bit different from previous days because I am going to do something big and secret. So, I will temporarily enable access permissions for the room.”
“It is to prevent some bad people from snitching.”
Dong Mo’s tone rose, and he cocked an eyebrow. The chat was immediately filled with question marks.
[Snitching?]
[What is going on? What is Momo going to do?]
[Is it what I think it is? Is Prometheus Dog going on the offensive again?]
[Momo, do not keep us in suspense! Tell us quickly!]
Dong Mo narrowed his pretty dog-like eyes. He was in no rush to explain to the livestream. Instead, he carefully scanned the chat for any negative comments before responding ambiguously.
“As for what it specifically is, you will know once you follow me. I set this up just so I can clearly see who is entering the room.”
“The dark circles are heavy because I was attacked by a stranger last night. I do not want to play the victim, but to prevent what I am about to do from causing bad rumors, I have to explain in advance.”
Dong Mo cleared his throat, and his smile faded. For the first time, he showed a very serious expression to the camera.
“I believe that since being abandoned by the tribe, I have not done anything bad to them, and I have always worked hard to live on my own. However, I also do not like being constantly hounded by talk of a so-called ‘curled tail curse’.”
“Based on the fact that the Moon Mountain Tribe provides a special supply of materials to sub-beastmen every year, and they did not give me mine before I was driven out this year,”
“Today, I am going to take back the last part of what belongs to me. I also hope everyone can avoid over-analyzing or spreading rumors about my actions.”
After finishing his explanation, Dong Mo stopped looking at the chat. He turned around to begin gathering the piles of burnt charcoal and preparing supplies for the trip.
Xue Qiu tilted its head slightly. Its golden slit pupils stared at the chat for a moment with a hint of warning. Then, it jumped off the rock and followed the busy Dong Mo with a wobbly wag of its big tail.
[The first time seeing Momo so serious! He is actually quite handsome!]
[Ah! Momo was attacked last night?]
[From the sounds of it, was it someone from the Moon Mountain Tribe?]
[Probably. But truly, Momo has been kicked out. Staying at Moon Mountain is indeed a bit awkward.]
[So Momo is going to the tribe to get things today? That is why he set the permissions.]
[I suspect it is not ‘getting,’ it is stealing.]
[No wonder he had to explain so much. Is he afraid of his reputation being ruined?]
[Umm, since the Moon Mountain Tribe did not give him this year’s supplies before he was kicked out, and it is now December, it is reasonable for Momo to take them back himself.]
[I support the person above!]
[I am even more curious about what Momo is going to do!]
The comments from the audience were a mix of good and bad, but most were just there for the spectacle. Dong Mo knew that people loved excitement and stimulation. The more mystery he maintained, the more he could trigger their curiosity.
He really was planning to do something major today. He was going to the Moon Mountain Tribe’s salt mine to take back a small piece of salt that should have belonged to him.
Salt was something he definitely could not find on his own in the short term. However, without salt during the Deep Snow Period, he would not be able to survive. Originally, he had not been so desperate to find salt, but after being threatened and warned by Yue Qi last night, his desire for retribution had reached its peak, fueled by anger.
In the little dog’s memories, he had never received much from the tribe since he was young. Even the salt he was supposed to receive each year was minimal. Since the tribe viewed him entirely as an ill omen and only allowed him to stay at Moon Mountain during the Deep Snow Period because of Yue Jia’s pleading, he did not want to bother with “gratitude for being raised.” He would not do anything harmful to the tribe, but he was absolutely going to take back what was his. The less others believed in him, the more he would thrive!
Thinking of this, Dong Mo’s movements became even faster. He placed the wooden bowl and beast-skin bowl into a previously prepared stone hollow, covering it with a stone slab. Then, he extinguished the fire and piled the charcoal at the cave entrance to create the appearance that someone was home.
Turning around, he tucked Xue Qiu into his chest and walked out of the cave with a fierce aura. The livestream floating beside him did not lose popularity because of the permissions. On the contrary, because of the setting, the number of followers increased significantly in a short time.
Dong Mo knew that the experience of “stealing” salt would be perfect livestream material. He was only afraid that because of his special status, someone might fabricate malicious rumors, which was why he had given such a serious explanation right at the start. Since he had said his piece first, then no matter what the audience saw later, it would be considered reasonable, and someone would explain it for him.
With that thought, Dong Mo pursed his lips, confirmed his direction, and quickened his pace.
The Moon Mountain Tribe’s salt mine was buried beneath the slope of a secondary rocky peak, benefiting from the terrain. It happened to be on the southeast side of the dense forest where Dong Mo had been abandoned. Following the footprints left by the beastman patrol, he soon saw the faint, flickering silhouettes of beastmen in the increasingly desolate pine forest.
The salt mine was a depression. The entrance was a huge circular cave, surrounded by wooden spiked fences coated in a strange liquid, as well as thorn traps on the ground. Three “tricycles” made of stone were parked at the cave entrance. Dong Mo was slightly surprised. He had not expected life on the Beastman Planet to be entirely as primitive as he had imagined. The tires of these stone carts looked like they were made of some kind of metal. Although the bodies had the luster of rock, they were polished very smooth, and even the handles for pushing were wrapped in protective coarse burlap. It was quite unexpected. Dong Mo guessed that the tires for these stone carts might have been purchased by the beastmen from the Interstellar Mall.
He quietly crouched down. While placing Xue Qiu on the ground, he quickly transformed into a small black dog. He worked hard to bury his beast-skin clothes in the yellowish snow nearby. Then, biting the snowy-white kitten by the scruff, he nestled into the dense dry branches of the shrubs. His black, fluffy, curled tail could not help but wag left and right, and his fur puffed out a bit.
Five or six tall, sturdy beastmen were gathered at the cave entrance not far away. Each was bare-chested and arguing until their faces were red:
“We should not have listened, otherwise we would have already”
“Are you questioning the Priest’s”
“What do we do now! Do we really have to use?”
“I do not care. In any case, I am taking back what belongs to me!”
The voices drifted in and out. Dong Mo’s small black dog ears were pricked so high they almost reached the sky, but he still could not hear clearly. He only watched as the beastmen argued more and more until they were about to come to blows, only to be stopped by others.
In the next second, a brown-haired beastman on the outer edge, who had not spoken, suddenly tensed his muscles. He turned and looked directly toward the spot where Dong Mo was hiding.
“I smell a strange beast!”
As those words fell, every beastman turned to look in Dong Mo’s direction.
