- Chapter 15 - Hanging Upside Down to Steal Salt
The moment those beastmen looked toward his hiding spot, Momo’s entire body tensed up.
He held Xue Qiu firmly beneath his belly, his black fur covering every inch of the kitten’s white fur, allowing himself to blend perfectly with the withered branches of the bushes.
Hearing the brown-haired beastman claim to have smelled an unfamiliar scent, Momo quickly buried his head and mouth into the nearby snow to hold his breath.
Several beastmen frowned, approaching menacingly as they looked around for a long time. After ensuring they found nothing, they turned back toward the salt mine entrance.
“Yue Chen, do not always be so paranoid. There is nothing here!”
“I really did smell a strange scent just now.”
“You were like this during the last sacrificial ritual too, claiming to smell strange scents when there was actually nothing. Have you forgotten the fifty lashes the Priest gave you as punishment?”
“Fine, fine, stop bickering here before you end up fighting. Hurry inside and get to work.”
While the beastmen were arguing, Momo crept along the continuous line of bushes toward the right side of the salt mine entrance.
There was a pile of unthawed snow behind a few parked tricycles that served as a perfect screen for his body.
He crouched on all fours behind the snow pile, holding his breath and watching every movement of the beastmen. Finally, one of them walked impatiently to a stone tricycle, grabbed the handles, and pushed forward with great force.
Momo seized this chance. He picked up Xue Qiu in his mouth and quickly crawled underneath the stone cart. The next second, as the cart began to move under the beastman’s heavy push, Momo flipped upward. With his four paws facing the sky, he gripped the recesses on the underside of the stone cart firmly, hanging upside down.
He had already minimized the livestream screen and tucked it behind his neck, while Xue Qiu lay steadily in his arms, held gently by the scruff of its neck.
Above him were the voices of the beastmen bickering, and below him was the grumble, grumble sound of the stone wheels rolling over the earth. Not a single person noticed that the heavy stone cart had become even heavier because a puppy was hanging underneath it.
“Hey, Yue Zhu, you are no good today. How can you have no strength even to push a salt collection cart?”
“Who are you talking about! I do not know if this cart took on water or what, but it is heavier than it was a few days ago!”
“Tsk, just keep making excuses. If your strength is lacking, it is lacking. Why so many reasons!”
“Who the hell are you calling weak! If you think you are so tough, you try it. This thing is really heavy today!”
“Fine, fine, push it in and load the goods. Once we are done, no one laugh at anyone else!”
Momo kept his round silver puppy eyes wide open, listening to their conversation with intense focus.
Initially, he had been worried when Yue Zhu mentioned the cart felt heavier than usual, but after hearing the other beastmen’s taunting remarks, his racing heart settled back down.
Beastmen loved to compete over strength. In this situation, even if Yue Zhu felt the weight was strange, he would not easily speak of it again.
Momo’s four paws hooked tightly onto the underside. For the first time, he felt lucky that his puppy body had not been fed well since childhood; otherwise, he would have been too heavy and surely would have been exposed.
The stone tricycle carried him smoothly into the salt mine cave.
At the same time, the livestream, which had fallen into a frenzy the moment they reached the salt mine area, was now completely occupied by all sorts of colorful comments.
I am truly speechless. I thought of a hundred ways Momo might go back to the tribe to take what belongs to him, but I never expected him to steal salt!
I even thought he would go back to act pitiful.
I thought he had some friends or relatives in the tribe to ask for help!
I know why he set permissions for the livestream today. Everyone who enters will be recorded, so if someone goes to snitch to the Yue Shan Tribe, Momo will know who it was.
And since he is using a small account, some people might not bother to enter once they see they need to follow him first.
Good, such a smart puppy.
My brain stalled when I saw him crawl under the stone cart!
Good, very good. An upside down puppy stealing salt online, is it?
Truly speechless. He was kicked out of the tribe, yet he still wants to steal the tribe’s salt?
Is the person above okay? The reason Momo explained so much before starting the stream was because he feared people like you. He is just taking back the supplies the tribe failed to give him this year.
Exactly. Besides, how much salt could a small puppy like him even consume?
While the discussion in the livestream was at its peak, the salt collection cart where Momo was hiding gradually slowed down.
His four small paws were trembling constantly; he was about to lose his grip!
Clack!
Accompanied by the sound of the cart halting, the surrounding light turned completely pitch black. The voices of the beastmen came from above once more.
“Yue Zhu, your cart is responsible for loading the secondary grade mixed salt bricks. Deliver them to the old, weak, and sick over at the Away Cave!”
“I hear you, I hear you.”
Momo was very familiar with the term Away Cave. In his puppy memories, he had lived in that dilapidated and filthy dark hole from the time he was small until he grew up.
Yue Zhu’s footsteps gradually faded. Momo endured the trembling of his limbs, and once he was certain the other party was completely away from the stone cart, he quickly released his paws and dropped to the ground.
He turned, carrying Xue Qiu in his mouth, and ran to the other side of the stone cart, using the darkness and his own fur as cover.
Looking around, he realized the salt mine cave on the beastman planet was different from what he had imagined.
Strange, multi-edged crystal columns grew on the surrounding rock walls, and there were countless fine, translucent fragments rustling on the ground.
The salt mine here consisted of substances formed from coarse salt crystals, which were worlds apart from so-called refined salt.
The secondary grade mixed salt bricks the beastman mentioned earlier likely referred to the ones growing on the rock walls that were yellow, ugly, and extremely fragile.
Momo huddled in a corner and scanned the area, calculating which small piece he should take.
Yue Zhu had already carried a large salt brick back to the cart and tossed it in with great force, filling the bottom of the cart.
Beastmen were very strong and could carry a lot in one trip.
Momo estimated that the other party would probably fill the cart in about four trips, so he did not dare to waste any more time.
The better quality salt bricks were high up and out of his reach. He decided to target a medium sized mixed salt brick at the very bottom. Using the sounds of the other beastmen digging and chatting as cover, he scratched rapidly with his two front paws. Before long, a salt brick about the size of Xue Qiu was scratched loose.
Momo pushed the salt brick back under the stone cart.
Coincidentally, Yue Zhu had just finished his last trip.
In the darkness, he and Xue Qiu exchanged a look. He quickly climbed back and hooked himself upside down beneath the stone cart. Xue Qiu obediently used its four paws to hug the salt brick that was as large as itself, and Momo then picked the kitten up by the scruff of its neck once more to hold it against his chest.
“I am leaving first!”
Next, the sound of Yue Zhu greeting the other beastmen came from above, and the stone collection cart began to move again.
“Damn, why is it truly so heavy today?”
Yue Zhu pushed the cart with great effort, unable to stop himself from muttering complaints.
“This is even heavier than when I came in!”
Momo’s black puppy legs trembled as he hung in mid air, but a small bit of his pink tongue snuck out of his mouth to pant.
I am sorry, Yue Zhu.
Regardless, you should be thankful that Xue Qiu and I are not very heavy due to malnutrition.
The dark surroundings gradually brightened as the salt collection cart continued to push forward.
Eventually, Momo saw the light of day again.
He could not help but close his eyes for a moment to ease the discomfort of emerging from the darkness. Feeling Yue Zhu stop the cart on the right side of the cave again, Momo focused all his attention on the other party’s every move.
“Yue Zhu, are you finished?”
“Yes, I am going to get some hemp grass bags to pack the salt.”
Yue Zhu responded as he left the stone cart and walked toward the other side.
Momo watched as his steps moved further away, then he flipped over and jumped to the ground. Carrying Xue Qiu in his mouth, he bolted back the way he had come without looking back.
He did not stop until he reached the spot where he had first buried his beast-skin clothes.
Running so fast inevitably made some noise. Yue Zhu looked back warily with a frown. “What was that?”
On the other side, a beastman who was busy repairing a protective trap also heard it. He simply stood up and walked over to look around. Seeing that everything was empty, he scratched the back of his head.
“It might have been some small animal running past.”
Yue Zhu did not quite believe him. He walked back to check near the salt cart and even counted the mixed salt bricks. After ensuring the quantity was correct, he let out a sigh of relief. “Little beasts actually dare to run all the way here now. Your protective measures are completely useless.”
“Tsk, what are you saying? We mainly guard against the big meat-eating guys. Are we not even supposed to let the grass-eaters pass through?”
Yue Zhu’s tone was unpleasant, and for a moment, the atmosphere between the two tall beastmen became tense.
Momo saw that they had moved past the previous topic. He dug his beast-skin clothes out from the snow pile, put them on, and turned to flee the salt mine while carrying Xue Qiu.
He sprinted the entire way, leaving small, scattered paw prints on the snow.
He did not breathe a sigh of relief until he reached the slope near his own cave.
He turned the livestream screen to the other side and quickly transformed back into his youth form. After putting on his beast-skin clothes properly, he gently picked up Xue Qiu.
“Let me see, you are not injured, are you?”
The first thing he did upon stopping was to ensure the kitten was okay.
Xue Qiu was still clutching the small salt brick in its arms, so it could only tilt its head toward him and let out a soft meow, as if responding that it was fine.
“Wonderful, Xue Qiu!”
Momo could not help but nuzzle the top of the little guy’s head with his chin. He tucked the kitten and the salt brick together into the beast-skin clothes at his chest and turned to walk toward the trap he had set, where the remaining half of the crow was placed.
In this winter temperature, a corpse would not easily rot. Perhaps some starving small animal would really stumble into it.
As he walked, he glanced at the livestream. As he had expected, although there were permission settings to enter, the number of viewers still exceeded two thousand.
Momo is so agile! Watching him made me so nervous!
Ah, the salt is in hand!
Momo! Just now, it seemed someone from the Yue Shan Tribe entered the livestream. They said they would turn a blind eye this time and not hold a grudge, but they told you to leave Yue Shan immediately after the deep snow period!
What does that mean! They are still not letting Momo stay here!
It is fine. In any case, now that he has salt, safely surviving the deep snow period is the most important thing.
Holding Xue Qiu and the salt brick in his arms, Momo was in a very good mood. He squinted at the bullet chats in the livestream and shrugged as he explained.
“I know the tribe wants me to leave. I will explain this in detail to everyone after I find enough supplies to survive the deep snow period.”
As he spoke, he could not stop the corners of his mouth from curling upward.
“Now I am going to the previous trap”
Before he could finish his sentence, his smile suddenly froze. The next second, Momo’s expression changed drastically, his silver vertical pupils contracting rapidly. Before the livestream could react, the youth had already bolted out like a sharp arrow.
“Put it down!”
“Do not move!”
