- Did Puppy Pick Up Fluffy Things on the Livestream Today?
- Chapter 13 - Threatened by a Wolf
Without a moment of hesitation, Xue Qiu instantly lunged from Momo’s arms, landing gracefully on the edge of the stone bed.
Using his tiny body as a shield in front of Momo’s back, the kitten arched his spine, his snow-white fur bristling entirely. The pointed, rounded ears atop his head flattened back as his golden vertical pupils glared fiercely forward. He opened his small mouth, continuously hissing at the dark figure.
Even though he barely had a few teeth, he put every ounce of effort into appearing as ferocious as possible, attempting to intimidate the intruder.
“What is this thing?”
The dark figure let out a dissatisfied “tsk” and reached out, easily lifting Xue Qiu by the scruff of his neck and dangling him in front of his eyes.
Xue Qiu’s limbs flailed wildly in mid-air as he hissed incessantly at the person who had grabbed him, his golden eyes flashing with a rare, savage ruthlessness.
“A cat? You can barely survive yourself, yet you fucking pick up a thing like this. I really do not understand.”
“Ah!”
“Fuck! Let go!”
Momo was jolted awake by a sharp cry of pain. He scrambled up from the bed in a panic, only to see a massive figure in the dark cave being bitten hard by Xue Qiu, who was suspended in the air. The figure let out a piercing scream.
While shouting, the intruder tried to shake Xue Qiu off.
The kitten’s helpless body swung up and down as he was tossed about, but he refused to let go from start to finish.
Just like when Momo first found him facing that giant snake, Xue Qiu had clamped down with a death grip.
“Hurry up and make this damn thing let go!”
Seeing that Momo was awake, the dark figure glared with silver eyes and shouted at Momo in frustration.
The darkness was disorienting, and Momo could not see clearly. He only saw Xue Qiu being swung back and forth in the air, which made him incredibly anxious.
He hurriedly scrambled off the bed and used a branch that still held a few sparks to reignite the campfire. The next second, he rushed forward and scooped Xue Qiu into his arms.
Xue Qiu’s teeth were clamped so tightly that the force of being pulled away actually tore a small piece of flesh from the “dark figure” he had been biting!
“Sibilance. Fuck!”
The scent of fresh blood permeated the cave air. The tall, bitten man looked distorted with pain.
“This thing is a cat? Why are its teeth so strange!”
While making pained noises, he inspected his wound.
On his bronze-colored forearm, the wound bitten by Xue Qiu was jagged and irregular. Though the opening did not look large, it was deep enough to see the bone.
Xue Qiu was trembling uncontrollably in Momo’s arms, but he continued to hiss at the beastman opposite them, acting both terrified and fierce.
Momo’s silver eyes were wide as he curled into the corner, hugging the kitten. Having been suddenly startled awake and then rushing to save the kitten, he was still in a daze from the shock.
He carefully looked over the familiar, tall beastman.
“You are Yue Qi from the Yueshan Tribe.”
Momo’s voice trembled, and his gaze toward Yue Qi was full of wariness.
Yue Qi was still baring his teeth while looking at his wound. Hearing Momo speak, he looked up and countered grumpily, “What exactly is this thing you are raising? To bite so hard at such a young age?”
Hearing the accusation against Xue Qiu, Momo held the kitten even tighter.
“I should be the one asking. Why have you come here?”
“The place where you are living still belongs to the territory of the Yueshan Tribe. Why can I not come here?” Yue Qi looked disdainful. Once the sharp pain in his rugged face subsided, his gaze toward Momo turned somewhat malicious.
Momo did not like being stared at with that kind of look and shrank back slightly. “I was kicked out of the tribe.”
“Exactly. You know you were kicked out, so what are you still doing in Yueshan?”
Yue Qi’s silver vertical pupils sharpened as he looked Momo up and down with an extremely suggestive gaze.
Momo was momentarily speechless. “This, this is the outskirts.”
He tried his best to defend himself.
“No wonder Yue Jia took the initiative to suggest to the Clan Leader that you return to the tribe.”
After looking Momo over, the corners of Yue Qi’s lips curled into a somewhat greasy smile.
“You are indeed much better looking than the average sub-beastman.”
This sentence carried very foul implications. Momo’s brows furrowed tightly, and his muscles tensed into a position of absolute defense.
“Visiting someone else’s cave in the middle of the night like this is very disrespectful!”
His heart raced, and despite the cold sweat on his back, Momo indignantly accused Yue Qi.
Seeing him like this, Yue Qi noticed his voice was trembling and could not help but sneer. “Pfft, hahahaha. Look at how scared you are. What is the matter? Weren’t you very good at acting pitiful toward Yue Jia in the snow? No wonder he went back and proposed to the Clan Leader and the Priest to let you return. Could it be that he already had you”
“Hiss!”
Before he could finish his sentence, Xue Qiu let out a more ferocious hiss than ever before. At the same time, from an angle Momo could not see, four exceptionally sharp fangs, unlike those of any ordinary feline, suddenly emerged from the small kitten’s mouth.
Yue Qi’s words were instantly cut short. The smile on his face froze, and the expression he gave Xue Qiu turned strange.
Momo, of course, guessed what he was about to say next. The customs among beastmen were open, and they did not have many taboos in their speech. This Yue Qi must think that because Yue Jia spoke up for him, they must have some kind of shameful relationship.
“You are only saying these things to my face. Why do you not go and ask Yue Jia directly?”
“Furthermore, I am not yet an adult. Do you really think it is right to say these things to an underage sub-beastman? Are you not afraid that I will tell the tribe about you visiting my cave at night and saying such malicious things?”
Momo forced himself to calm down and glared at Yue Qi, refuting him with clear logic.
Sure enough, Yue Qi’s expression became increasingly ugly.
From Momo’s inherited memories, he knew that beastmen valued reputation and dignity very highly, even more than life itself.
“You really are sharp-tongued. To have survived until now, you must be quite something,” Yue Qi tsked to save face, his face full of impatience.
“Do you think I wanted to see you? Just a slightly attractive, incompetent, and deformed sub-beastman.”
“Yue Jia sent me to remind you that once the Deep Snow Period ends, you should leave Yueshan as soon as possible.”
As Yue Qi spoke, he saw that Xue Qiu was still hissing at him from Momo’s arms, and he felt his wound starting to throb again.
Momo was stunned by the warning from Yue Jia. “What do you mean?”
Why was he being told to leave Yueshan? He had worked so hard to find this cave.
“I have not affected your lives, nor have I tried to return to the tribe,” Momo defended himself.
Yue Qi seemed very impatient with Momo’s statements and scratched the skin around his wound. “You are truly dense. More than half of Yueshan belongs to the tribe’s territory. The resources you are currently using to live and hunt belong to us. You have been kicked out of the tribe, do you know what that means? It means you are an outsider. You are not allowed to touch anything that belongs to the tribe.”
“Yue Jia is kind-hearted, so he pleaded for you. You can stay here until after the Deep Snow Period. Of course, that is if you can survive.”
“Anyway, I have delivered the message. Whether you listen is up to you. If you insist on staying, the next person to come looking for you probably will not be just me.”
Yue Qi’s last few words went up in tone, carrying a hint of a warning and a meaningful smile.
Momo’s lips were pressed tightly together. His brain had received too much information at once, and he did not know what to say.
They wanted him to leave Yueshan.
He had been kicked out of the tribe and was not allowed to use any resources belonging to Yueshan.
Yue Jia had pleaded for him.
Yue Qi waited for a moment. Seeing that the pretty sub-beastman seemed scared out of his wits and remained silent, he shrugged. Since he had delivered the message, he turned to leave the cave.
Just as his long legs took a step, he remembered something and looked back at Xue Qiu in Momo’s arms.
“Also, do not blame me for not warning you. That thing in your arms might be a disaster. Ordinary lion beastmen do not grow teeth like that. You should think carefully for yourself.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Xue Qiu narrowed his golden vertical pupils and gave Yue Qi another fierce hiss as a warning.
Yue Qi rolled his eyes and strode out of the cave in a few steps.
The sound of four limbs hitting the snow echoed, followed by the sound of wind as he ran. It seemed Yue Qi had transformed into a black wolf and left quickly.
The weak firelight flickered precariously in the cave. Momo’s breathing was rapid. He calmed himself for a long time before cautiously carrying Xue Qiu back to the stone bed.
“He shook you like that just now. Are you hurt?”
Even though he was frightened and warned to leave Yueshan after the Deep Snow Period, Momo’s first priority was to check on Xue Qiu.
He carefully inspected the little guy from head to toe, ensuring there were no injuries and that he was only a bit exhausted. Then, he gently pried open the small mouth.
Inside were only a few tender, white little teeth. The white fur around his mouth was still stained with some of Yue Qi’s blood.
“Meow.”
Xue Qiu’s golden eyes rounded again, and he gave Momo a tiny, soft cry.
“You were so amazing just now, Xue Qiu.”
Momo could not help but force a smile, pressing his forehead against Xue Qiu’s.
“How did you make such a fierce sound? And you bit Yue Qi so hard. Even though you only have these few little teeth, you scared me.”
“But being fierce is good. If you are fierce, you will not be bullied.”
Momo’s voice grew quieter and quieter.
After the panic subsided, he fell into a low emotional state because of Yue Qi’s reminders.
The other man was right.
The reason he had been able to survive peacefully in the cave for the past few days and freely search for food and wood in the wild was that Yue Jia had spoken well of him in the tribe, so no one came to disturb him.
He had been careless. He thought that as long as he did not live in the tribe’s base and did not affect others in other places, it would be fine.
But the truth was, this was the Beastman Planet. Thinking with a beastly nature could not be reconciled with his previous human way of thinking.
Territory and resources were the most important things.
He had been kicked out of the Yueshan Tribe, so he had no right to enjoy these things anymore.
Whether it was the cave he had worked so hard to claim, or the other bits and pieces that were tattered but had taken so much time and effort to find.
“Meow?”
Xue Qiu felt Momo’s suppressed emotions and raised a tiny pink paw, gently touching his cheek.
The soft touch felt as if it were caressing his heart, again and again.
Momo raised his head again, his silver eyes meeting Xue Qiu’s golden ones.
“Xue Qiu, if we have to leave Yueshan after the Deep Snow Period and head to an even more unknown place, would you be willing?”
Momo knew in his heart that leaving was now a necessity.
It was just that these successive setbacks inevitably made him feel very discouraged.
And in truth, he was also a bit of a cowardly puppy.
Those unknown areas were too mysterious to him, and he had no idea what else he would have to face.
Xue Qiu tilted his head. He saw the hesitation and the complex need for affirmation in Momo’s eyes.
After a moment, the kitten leaned forward with effort, his pink nose gently touching the tip of Momo’s nose. Then, a tiny pink tongue quickly and quietly licked his cheek.
“Meow.”
Pulling back, Xue Qiu blinked his golden eyes, looking adorable.
He seemed to be telling Momo:
I will be with you, do not be afraid.
In that instant, the scared, thumping, and overwhelmed heart of the puppy was completely settled.
After a brief moment of being lost, the presence of the kitten filled him with renewed excitement and the drive to keep working hard.
Momo’s eyes reddened slightly, and he could not help but lean forward and give Xue Qiu’s forehead a big kiss.
“Right! I am not afraid! The more they do not want me to have a good life, the more I will live an incredibly good one!”
“It is just leaving Yueshan!”
“Once we safely pass the Deep Snow Period, we will go to the Middle Rain Plains to start a new life!”
