Did My Wife Break Up With Me Today? - Chapter 78
Chapter 78: “As you command, Master.”
Chen Kongqing didn’t even know what he was saying.
It was the only way he could think of—a way to anchor the connection between him and Xu Jingmo a little deeper. It seemed stupid, but… he couldn’t think of anything else.
A sharp, intense sting of bitterness rose in his nose. Yet, why did the Xu Jingmo in front of him still show no reaction?
The rabbit’s eyes were red, and he couldn’t help but feel a surge of frustration and defeat. Well, since he had already said that, what else was there left to say or do?
Chen Kongqing sniffled again, as if having reached a final resolution, and stood straight up on his tiptoes. His free hand, the one not being held, reached up and grabbed Xu Jingmo’s collar at the neck.
Xu Jingmo’s eyes flickered with a moment of daze, but he instinctively yielded to Chen Kongqing. The tall man allowed his waist to be pulled down with ease.
Chen Kongqing stayed on his tiptoes, his target clear as he pressed his lips against Xu Jingmo’s thin ones. He had no experience with kissing; the few times he’d done it had all been with Xu Jingmo. But those times, Xu Jingmo had been the initiator. He had never been the one to start.
So, he could only explore step by step. He remembered that one should probably start by kissing the lips, licking them soothingly, and then going deeper.
The rabbit followed the example he’d been given, licking the deep peaks of the man’s lips, clumsily extending his tongue. But the rabbit seemed anxious, so his clumsy movements were more like a head-on collision.
His wet tongue crashed into Xu Jingmo’s mouth. Only then did the man finally snap out of the shock of the words Chen Kongqing had spoken earlier.
Quickly, Xu Jingmo used both hands to grip Chen Kongqing’s slender shoulders and pushed outward.
Chen Kongqing felt the force pushing him away. Though it wasn’t much, it felt like a sharp blade plunging deep into his body. Even after he had gone this far, Xu Jingmo… still wasn’t willing?
Chen Kongqing’s hand, which had been clutching the man’s collar, suddenly let go. He lowered his heels, his shoulders trembling as he tried to shrug off the large hands holding him. Fine. Since he was doing what Xu Jingmo wanted and stopped kissing him, the man would surely let him go, right?
But in the next heartbeat, he was forcibly pulled back into that warm, solid chest.
“You… let go.” He tried with all his might to break free from the embrace.
Xu Jingmo only bound him tighter. “Xiao Man…”
“Don’t call me that!” Chen Kongqing didn’t know why, but the moment he heard those two words, a string of tears instantly spilled from his eyes.
The rabbit in his arms seemed to have a switch flipped; he struggled frantically, a stubborn energy fueling his movements. “You lose me every time… you’re not allowed to call me that! Let me go!”
Xu Jingmo couldn’t help but increase his strength, locking the rabbit in his arms with his own. “I didn’t… I never thought about losing you, Xiao Man. I will absolutely never leave you.”
“You’re lying… you’re lying…” Chen Kongqing kept crying. He thought he had cried all his tears out last night. “You’re going to throw me away again, aren’t you? You’re pushing me away again…”
“Xiao Man, I pushed you away not because I didn’t want to say yes, but because I wanted to tell you that you don’t have to do these things. I won’t leave you again.” Xu Jingmo lowered his head and lightly kissed the crown of Chen Kongqing’s head. “You don’t have to make a deal with me. Not now, not ever.”
Xu Jingmo’s words were too beautiful; every syllable tunneled into Chen Kongqing’s ears. The tears finally stopped flowing. The rabbit in his arms seemed to have lost the strength to cry, going limp and hiccuping against his chest.
It was the quiet warmth that follows an emotional explosion. Xu Jingmo breathed in the scent of the person in his arms; that familiar medicinal fragrance filled his senses.
Three seconds later.
The rabbit, who had finally calmed down, suddenly tilted his head up without warning and took a fierce, hard bite out of the man’s shoulder.
Xu Jingmo didn’t stop him, nor did he pull away. He let Chen Kongqing bite him, not even letting out a grunt, only furrowing his brow slightly as the pain registered.
Chen Kongqing felt his own jaw grow sore from the effort, yet Xu Jingmo didn’t move a muscle. Frustrated, he yanked open the top buttons of the man’s shirt, pulling the collar down haphazardly until Xu Jingmo’s left shoulder was exposed to the air.
A deep red ring of teeth marks stood out vividly on the thick shoulder. Even the shape of his individual teeth was clear. If he had bitten just an inch deeper, he likely would have drawn blood. But judging by Xu Jingmo’s reaction alone, one would think he hadn’t even bitten through the fabric.
Chen Kongqing bit his lip and finally looked up at the man inches away. The man was looking down, his deep phoenix eyes fixed on him. “Feeling a bit better?”
“No,” Chen Kongqing said stubbornly, looking away again. He hadn’t forgotten the words he heard at the hospital yesterday. Now, those words were pouring back into his ears.
“The slot definitely belongs to Jingmo this time.” “But it’s so far away… the food abroad is terrible…”
How far was “so far”? How long would he be gone? Would he ever come back?
“Then bite me a few more times, or… you can do whatever you want.” Xu Jingmo leaned down, using his lips to kiss away the tear tracks on Chen Kongqing’s cheeks. He even extended his tongue, slowly licking away the bitterness at the center of the rabbit’s face.
The hot, wet tongue licked Chen Kongqing’s face, inch by inch. It was a sensation he couldn’t describe. Chen Kongqing panted softly, instinctively trying to hide. But he was wrapped so tightly in the man’s arms that there was nowhere to go.
Fine. He had nowhere to hide anyway. He had… long ago lost his way out.
Chen Kongqing didn’t know if he was just losing his strength from being licked by that clever, warm tongue, or if he really just had no moves left. He bit his lip, his voice weak, his wet eyelashes drooping. “How… how long are you going for? When will you be back?”
The man holding him was still kissing him, pecking at his tender cheek over and over. Two seconds after hearing the question, Xu Jingmo stopped and asked with confusion, “What?”
Chen Kongqing was starting to calm down. His cheeks felt sticky now. Out of a sense of petty revenge, he leaned his face against the man’s chest, wiping the wet saliva onto the shirt he had already made a mess of.
This was the only revenge he could manage.
“Aren’t you getting a slot to go abroad?” The rabbit pouted, his voice stiff. “How long are you leaving for this time?”
He knew, deep down, he couldn’t actually make Xu Jingmo stay. Even if Xu Jingmo agreed to stay for him, he couldn’t be the reason someone gave up their future. That was why he was so miserable.
“I’ll let you go… I won’t force you to stay.” Chen Kongqing sighed, his body completely giving way to the heat of the embrace he felt he could never quite hold onto. “But you have to tell me how long…”
“A slot? Abroad?” Xu Jingmo processed the information. After a moment, as the pieces connected, his furrowed brow smoothed out, and he laughed. “Who did you hear that from?”
“I… I heard them talking when I went to bring you the cake…” Chen Kongqing gripped the sleeve at the man’s wrist. “I didn’t eavesdrop on purpose, they just happened to be talking…”
Xu Jingmo: “So you thought I was leaving again?”
“Wasn’t that it? They said it was far, and the food there was bad.” Chen Kongqing muttered with a hint of grievance. “If I hadn’t heard, were you planning to wait until the day before you left to tell me?”
As Xu Jingmo listened, he reached out and gently tucked the damp stray hairs behind the boy’s ear. His movements were tender, as was his voice. “Of course not… Xiao Man, I said I would never leave you again. This slot for going abroad is because the hospital has a medical partnership with Germany. There are exchange activities, and I’m just representing the hospital at a conference. I’ll be back very soon—about a week.”
The explanation wasn’t long. The information wasn’t complex. But for some reason, it took Chen Kongqing a long time to react.
The rabbit in his arms opened his swollen, walnut-like eyes, blinking repeatedly, and then pulled back slightly from Xu Jingmo’s chest. His red eyes showed a mix of disbelief and budding joy. “Just… an exchange conference?”
“Mm, just a conference.” Xu Jingmo looked into those wet eyes, confirming the answer. “And the reason I hadn’t told you yet was that I was planning to take you with me. There’s a specialist in Berlin who focuses on memory loss. Haven’t you been having headaches and feeling unwell lately? I didn’t want to try any treatments myself or bring up the past without guidance, fearing it would make you suffer more. I wanted to take you to see the doctor in Berlin.”
Chen Kongqing had never imagined it would be like this. He stared with wide eyes, his lips pressed tight.
“But the slot was only officially confirmed yesterday, so… I hadn’t had the chance to tell you my plan yet.” Xu Jingmo pressed his thumb lightly against the rabbit’s reddened eye corner, then leaned down and kissed it.
Chen Kongqing’s eyes felt hot again. “I thought… you were going to be like when we were little—gone and never coming back.”
“No. Never again.” Xu Jingmo pulled the rabbit tight into his embrace once more. His arms entwined with the soft, thin body, leaving no gap between them.
Chen Kongqing felt like he was being squeezed flat, but he didn’t struggle. He was willing to be held. He even wished time would freeze in this very second.
“I’m sorry. If only I hadn’t left back then, you wouldn’t have suffered so much. I’m sorry.” Xu Jingmo’s voice was deep and hoarse. He held him with a force that felt like he wanted to rub the boy into his very bones.
Chen Kongqing didn’t actually blame Xu Jingmo for leaving; he only blamed him for not coming to find him. After hearing that Xu Jingmo had been searching for him ever since returning to the country, his anger had mostly vanished.
But at this moment, he didn’t want to say he didn’t blame him. “In the future… you’d better serve me well.”
A lingering tenderness appeared in Xu Jingmo’s eyes. “Okay.”
“Then go wash up now and get in my bed.” Chen Kongqing suddenly popped his head up, pulling back just enough to stick out his pink tongue and lick Xu Jingmo’s chin. “I’m not making a deal with you anymore. You’re not allowed to push me away again.”
A large hand pressed against his back, and Xu Jingmo’s low, raspy voice sounded in his ear:
“As you command, Master.”
