- Chapter 2 - The Disobedient Ears and Tail
Observing the vigilance on the person before him, Mo Yuan took out a jade pendant carved with a small Jingjie pattern and handed it to Shi Yu.
“This is from the person your mother entrusted. You should be able to trust this, right?”
“Mother.”
Shi Yu snapped back to reality from the notification sound. He reached out to take the jade pendant, gently stroking the “Yu” character carved on it, confirming its existence through the plot transmitted by the system.
“My Master’s title is Zemi. He was an old friend of your mother. When she met with trouble, she sent word to Lingxi Mountain, asking us to take you away.”
Shi Yu clutched the jade pendant tightly in his hand, his voice as faint as smoke. “If I leave this place, won’t the Emperor discover it?”
Mo Yuan seemed to have a comprehensive plan already. He flicked his sleeve gently, and a person exactly identical to Shi Yu lay quietly on the ground.
“This puppet will die in your stead. From this day forward, however, there will no longer be a Prince Shi Yu in this world.”
Mo Yuan stared at him, pronouncing every word with solemnity.
Shi Yu glanced at the puppet on the ground, then slowly lowered his head, walking toward the door with a limp. He had only taken two steps when he accidentally tugged at his wound. In an instant, a sharp, intense pain struck him, causing Shi Yu to let out a muffled groan.
“Ugh.”
Seeing the pathetic, miserable state of this little creature, Mo Yuan hurried to catch up.
“Tsk. Little kitten, beg your big brother, and I will take you for a flight!”
Shi Yu’s gaze remained fixed straight ahead, not looking at Mo Yuan at all. “No need, thank you.”
Mo Yuan acted as if he had not heard him at all, paying no mind to the rejection. He reached out, grabbed Shi Yu’s arm, and draped it over his own shoulder.
“You.”
Shi Yu was startled by this sudden movement. His tail stood erect in an instant, accidentally brushing against Mo Yuan’s hand. Mo Yuan felt the soft, downy fur brush against his skin, and his heart seemed to skip a beat. He stood stunned for a moment.
“So cute!”
Mo Yuan brushed aside the chaotic thoughts in his mind and raised his hand again, gently patting Shi Yu’s head.
Shi Yu’s voice was cold as ice. “I am warning you: do not touch my head again!”
The two were incredibly close, close enough that Shi Yu could have slapped Mo Yuan if he wanted to. But considering Mo Yuan was there to save him, Shi Yu restrained himself, only able to issue a fierce warning. Hearing this, Mo Yuan lifted an eyebrow slightly.
This little brat is not very old, but his temper is quite something.
Mo Yuan’s lips curled upward, but he did not reply, simply continuing to support Shi Yu as they walked outside. When they reached the courtyard gate, Mo Yuan snapped his fingers nonchalantly. Behind them, the dilapidated guest room was instantly swallowed by a dragon of fire; the sound of burning timber grew increasingly intense.
Shi Yu turned back to look, the raging fire reflected in his eyes. The sorrow in his heart welled up like an uncontrollable tide.
Is it truly an immersive mode? Even the emotions feel this real?
Shi Yu pressed a hand to his heart, looking down with a dejected expression, his voice as calm as water. “Let’s go.”
Hearing that it was time to leave, Mo Yuan did not waste a second, supporting Shi Yu as he rose into the air.
“Hold on tight!”
Clearly, Mo Yuan’s hasty warning did not have much effect; Shi Yu was shocked by the sudden altitude.
It actually flew?
At this moment, surprise filled Shi Yu’s ink-colored eyes, and he did not even notice that his arms were tightly wrapped around Mo Yuan’s waist. After a while, once he had adapted, Shi Yu realized how awkward their posture was. Mo Yuan was still off to the side, feeling quite pleased with himself and showing off his magic, his peach-blossom eyes curved as he looked at him.
“How is it, little kitten? My levitation technique is impressive, is it not? Once we enter the sect, I will teach you myself. How about that?”
“Not necessary. And, call me by my name.”
Shi Yu let go, pretending to be nonchalant as if nothing had happened. Mo Yuan looked at the hand Shi Yu had pulled away, his mind still filled with the soft sensation from just a moment ago. He quickly hid the profound meaning in his eyes.
“Calling you by name is so formal! How about I call you A-Yu? How is it? Does it sound good?”
Shi Yu turned his gaze away, choosing to ignore him. Mo Yuan did not mind, his tone lazy and careless. “If you are not satisfied, I will think of another. How about Mimi? Or Cat-Cat would work too.”
“Do not use anything related to cats! Anything else is fine!”
Listening to the increasingly absurd names, Shi Yu’s patience was finally exhausted.
“Then I will stick with A-Yu. Does A-Yu think that sounds good?”
Mo Yuan, completely indifferent to Shi Yu’s impatient attitude, remained his usual enthusiastic and cheerful self. Shi Yu kept his head down. By now, his wounds were beginning to throb, and cold sweat beaded on his forehead. He had absolutely no desire to engage with this person who chirped like a sparrow.
Throughout the journey, Shi Yu heard nothing but Mo Yuan’s non-stop chatter. Just as he was about to lose his temper, they finally arrived. Mo Yuan held him and landed steadily. Shi Yu had no time to be angry; he began to examine his surroundings.
The entire mountain peak was shrouded in clouds and mist. Sunlight filtered through the thin haze, making the emerald forests shimmer with a hazy glow. The air was filled with a faint scent of grass and trees. Shi Yu looked at the serene and tranquil environment, thinking that staying here for a few years might not be so bad. Of course, it would be even better if it were not for this noisy tour guide standing next to him.
As soon as they stood still, Mo Yuan enthusiastically introduced every blade of grass and tree to Shi Yu, as if they were all his closest friends.
“Can you say something useful for once!”
Shi Yu had listened for a long time, but not a single word from Mo Yuan had been the point.
“A-Yu, you do not understand. I was brought up the mountain by my Master to practice since I was a child. I do not have many friends, so I can only talk to these flowers and plants. In my heart, they are my family and my friends.”
Mo Yuan spoke with extreme sincerity, but Shi Yu was half-doubtful.
“Forget it, introduce whatever you want.”
Seeing the slightly sorrowful look on Mo Yuan’s face, Shi Yu decided not to stop him. It was not until the two encountered other disciples that Shi Yu realized how wrong he had been. Almost every disciple who saw Mo Yuan would quickly step forward to bow to him. A few wanted to exchange pleasantries, only to be left stunned by Mo Yuan’s various winks and grimaces.
“Not many friends?”
Shi Yu, who had been tricked into listening to a botanical encyclopedia for half the day, radiated a thick aura of resentment.
“I do not know why they are so enthusiastic today, either.”
Mo Yuan shrugged innocently, his eyes filled with a guileless expression, indicating he had no clue.
“Anyway, let us leave it for another day. We should prioritize getting you to Master to treat your wounds.”
If this little cat keeps struggling like this, he will break. Better fix him up first.
He only just remembered the wounds now? Shi Yu began to wonder if his original self had offended Mo Yuan somewhere, leading to him being tormented like this.
Mo Yuan did not dawdle further. He hoisted Shi Yu up and flew toward the main hall on one of the mountain peaks. At this point, Shi Yu finally saw the Master Mo Yuan had spoken of. Unlike the white-bearded old man he had imagined, this person looked quite young, with a slender, upright figure and a refined, handsome face.
“Master, I have brought A-Yu back.”
Mo Yuan also shed his previous unrestrained demeanor, his expression becoming serious and solemn.
“Shi Yu?” The man sitting on the main seat slowly opened his eyes and called out to him.
Shi Yu stepped forward and, imitating Mo Yuan’s movements, bowed to this ethereal-looking person.
“Master, A-Yu is injured. Please, I ask that you treat him.”
Upon hearing Mo Yuan’s words, the man began to look Shi Yu over carefully.
“Shi Yu, you… you look so much like your mother.”
The man looked into Shi Yu’s eyes, sighed softly, and murmured to himself. Shi Yu was stunned to hear this, not understanding the meaning behind his words. However, the man immediately instructed Mo Yuan to lead him back to his living quarters first.
