- Chapter 3 - The Cat Tail is Out of Control
Not long after Mo Yuan brought Shi Yu back to their residence, someone delivered medicine. Mo Yuan picked up the medicine bottle and examined it from every angle.
“Our Master is truly good to you. This is the best medicine in the entire sect.”
Shi Yu lazily raised his eyelids and replied, “If you want it so badly, go find someone to beat you up. You can have some when you get back.”
“Ah Yu, you are truly heartless. Master has already ordered preparations for the apprenticeship ceremony. I am your senior brother now; how can you be so cruel?”
Mo Yuan wore an expression as if he had suffered a great blow, looking pitifully at Shi Yu. Shi Yu found it difficult to distinguish who was the actual cat between the two of them. He shot a cold glare at him and reached out to take the bottle. “Enough. Give me the medicine.”
Mo Yuan nimbly dodged, his magnetic, pleasant voice echoing in the room. “Ah Yu, it is difficult to apply medicine to the wounds on your back. Let your senior brother help you.”
Shi Yu looked at Mo Yuan’s determined expression. As the wounds began to throb with pain again, he had no choice but to yield. However, as soon as his clothes were removed, Shi Yu felt something was amiss, as if a scorching gaze were fixed upon him.
Shi Yu squinted for a few seconds and looked at Mo Yuan, but he appeared perfectly normal. My ears and tail have already disappeared. He should not be staring at me anymore.
Shi Yu stared at Mo Yuan sharply. “Never mind. I will do it myself.”
But Mo Yuan did not give him a chance to retract his consent and gently pressed him down onto the bed. Shi Yu moved a bit too abruptly, causing his partially loosened clothes to fall away completely, revealing a large portion of his fair skin. Mo Yuan’s well-defined fingers pressed against his shoulder blade; his palms were burning hot, scorching against Shi Yu’s clear, icy skin.
“Mo Yuan, what are you doing?” Shi Yu looked at the face inches away, dazed for a moment, his voice icy.
The corners of Mo Yuan’s lips curled up, and ripples of temptation swirled in his peach-blossom eyes. “Junior brother, be a little more obedient and let senior brother apply the medicine for you.”
This posture made Shi Yu feel too embarrassed to look Mo Yuan in the eyes, so he simply lowered his gaze and stopped speaking. Seeing that Shi Yu no longer resisted, Mo Yuan slowly sat up.
Shi Yu lay on his stomach, his back covered in various wounds. Although none were very deep, they were scattered across his entire back. Mo Yuan squinted his cold eyes at these scars; a vision of his former self seemed to flash before him, and his expression gradually turned icy.
“Does it hurt?”
“It is fine,” Shi Yu replied nonchalantly, as if he felt no pain at all.
Mo Yuan said nothing more. He dipped his fingers into the ointment and gently applied it to the wounds. However, the moment Mo Yuan’s hand touched Shi Yu’s back, Shi Yu’s body shuddered. To his horror, his grey cat ears suddenly sprouted from his black hair.
Mo Yuan stared at the cat ears that appeared out of thin air on Shi Yu’s head for a moment, then let out a breathless, soft laugh. Immediately after, a fluffy grey tail gradually materialized in the air.
“Ah Yu, your cat tail is out, too.”
Mo Yuan watched the tail swaying before him, his peach-blossom eyes curving into crescents as he reached out to grab it.
“Mo Yuan, stop.”
Hearing Mo Yuan, Shi Yu turned his head and locked eyes with his laughing gaze. At that moment, Mo Yuan’s “devilish claws” were reaching for the tail that had appeared out of nowhere. Shi Yu quickly rolled to the side to dodge, staring fiercely at Mo Yuan. “Do you want to die?”
Seeing Shi Yu’s guarded look, Mo Yuan sheepishly withdrew his hand. “I certainly do not want to die, but Ah Yu, you are no match for me right now.”
“You,” Shi Yu said, rendered speechless by Mo Yuan’s smug expression. He snatched the medicine bottle from Mo Yuan’s hand. “I will apply the medicine myself. You can leave.”
Shi Yu pointed toward the door, signaling for Mo Yuan to get out. Mo Yuan had no intention of leaving. “Don’t be like that! You do not have to be shy, Ah Yu. I have already seen your cat ears and tail before, have I not?”
Mo Yuan’s gaze was dark and unreadable. His hand moved “out of control” toward Shi Yu’s head, but the little cat ears twitched twice and batted his hand away.
“Mo Yuan, do not make me say it a second time.”
Shi Yu sat up and moved further away from Mo Yuan. Mo Yuan pouted and reluctantly walked toward the door. “Fine! If you find it inconvenient later, I am always happy to help!”
Shi Yu did not reply. He watched him until Mo Yuan walked out of the room, then looked away. He frowned and touched the fluffy ears still standing atop his head. This uncontrollable body was truly exhausting.
“Task complete, settling. No additional rewards. Task reward: Talent of ‘Ten Thousand Voices’.”
As Shi Yu was about to continue applying the medicine, a cold, mechanical voice suddenly rang out.
“Ten Thousand Voices? What is that?”
“According to the original character settings, the system provides corresponding talents to ensure you have sufficient ability to advance the plot normally.” The mechanical voice paused before continuing to explain, “Based on a query of the character database, the ‘Ten Thousand Voices’ talent helps you memorize all the knowledge you learn from books.”
Shi Yu understood; it was essentially a photographic memory. The system had just given it a rather artistic name.
“Please note that the second task will begin in three days.”
The mechanical voice went silent, and Shi Yu lowered his head to continue applying his medicine. Over the next three days, apart from having to see Mo Yuan every day, Shi Yu’s life was quite peaceful.
Early that morning, Mo Yuan came to find him. His exquisite features could not hide his joy; he was as excited as a monkey. “Ah Yu, today you will be initiated as a disciple. Are you ready?”
“I am the one becoming a disciple. Why are you so excited?” Shi Yu glanced at him, failing to understand how he could be so “vibrant” every single day.
“I am about to become a senior brother, so of course I am excited. Furthermore, I have a beauty like you as a junior brother.” Mo Yuan tilted his head, smiling as he watched Shi Yu, who sat quietly drinking tea.
Clearly, in just three days, Shi Yu had learned to become immune to all of Mo Yuan’s rhetoric. He glanced at him sideways and continued to sip his tea, his movements unperturbed.
While Mo Yuan continued to chatter, someone suddenly walked in from the door.
“Senior Brother Mo, the Master asks you to take Young Master Shi to the Main Hall for the apprenticeship ceremony.” The man bowed respectfully to both Mo Yuan and Shi Yu.
“Fu Zhu, you are here. Ah Yu, this is Fu Zhu, the attendant who serves by the Master’s side.”
Hearing Mo Yuan’s introduction, Shi Yu nodded at the newcomer, and Fu Zhu bowed to Shi Yu once more.
“Senior Brother Mo, please head over early. I must return now.” After saying this, the man turned and walked away with cold indifference.
Mo Yuan scratched his head in confusion. “Do not mind him, Ah Yu. Fu Zhu is usually not like this; he might just be in a bad mood today.”
Shi Yu did not pay it much mind, though he was curious. “He looks about my age. Why is he an attendant to Zemiao Zun rather than a disciple?”
“I am not sure. The Master brought him up the mountain. Perhaps the Master feels his talent is insufficient. However, let me tell you, Fu Zhu is truly miraculous. He can speak to the other animals on the mountain.”
“What is so strange about that? Cannot you also talk to those plants?” Shi Yu appeared unfazed, as if this were an ordinary occurrence.
“That is different. The animals can truly understand what he says.”
Shi Yu did not believe a single word Mo Yuan said. Mo Yuan watched as Shi Yu stood up and headed toward the door, persistently following him and continuing to talk about how magical Fu Zhu was.
When they arrived at the Main Hall, the ceremony was nearly ready. Seeing Fu Zhu approach, Mo Yuan finally fell silent.
“Senior Brother Mo, Young Master Shi, please wait a moment. Zemiao Zun is currently setting up the Star Platform for Young Master Shi.”
“Star Platform?” Hearing the confusion in Shi Yu’s tone, Mo Yuan turned to look at him.
“The Star Platforms are uniformly arranged by the sect to observe star signs and determine fortune. However, both your Star Platform and mine were observed and set by the Master himself.”
No sooner had he spoken than a dazzling light flashed in the distant sky. Even in broad daylight, the radiance was blinding. The white light gradually faded, and the sky immediately shone with seven-colored rays, dreamlike and illusory.
