- Chapter 12 - A Shaman Who Can Never Speak—What Do You Expect Him to Say?
Xiu Ka took half a step back, avoiding Mi Yue’s touch. “I-I’m fine.”
“Hiss…” But the sudden movement aggravated his injuries, causing a sharp pain.
Almost immediately, Mi Yue’s phone vibrated, Xiu Ka’s health bar was dropping.
Mi Yue shot him an angry glare. (You brought this on yourself.)
She then grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the tent. Using the tent as cover, she retrieved medical supplies like alcohol from her system space.
Xiu Ka sniffed the air, recognizing the familiar pungent scent, and immediately understood what Mi Yue intended to do.
He sat cross-legged on the ground, eyes lowered, watching her small hands as she prepared the cotton swabs. His heart was a mix of tension, anticipation, and an indescribable sense of shame.
Unaware of the turmoil in Xiu Ka’s mind, Mi Yue was furious at his reckless behavior.
She had to endure the pain of transmigrating into this beast world just to alleviate his suffering, yet here he was, throwing himself into fights and harming himself over a few words.
How unfair was that?
Her frustration bled into her actions, she didn’t hold back.
The alcohol-soaked cotton swab pressed against his wound, sending a searing pain through his body.
Xiu Ka looked up, about to say something, but the dark expression on her face made him swallow his words.
Holding his breath, he tried to listen to her thoughts, hoping to understand why she was so angry.
But Mi Yue’s mind was a blank slate, consumed only by silent fury and the task of treating his wounds.
Once the front injuries were taken care of, she motioned for him to turn around so she could tend to the wounds on his back.
His broad back was covered in dark bruises, some even stretching down to his tailbone.
As her hands moved lower, the muscles in his back tensed.
Clenching his fists, he whispered, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. I won’t fight them so recklessly again.”
He had a vague sense that Mi Yue was angry because of the fight.
His words were like a spark, igniting the frustration she had been suppressing.
(Now you apologize? What were you thinking before?)
(So stubborn, so inflexible, can’t you use your brain?)
(You could’ve just agreed to their terms for now and dealt with it later! Did they really have the power to force you to mate? You big idiot!)
Hearing her thoughts, Xiu Ka’s gaze darkened.
In a hoarse voice, he asked, “Do you… want me to pair up with that female?”
Mi Yue’s hands stilled. She blinked but didn’t answer directly, instead asking her system internally, “System, if my target forms a bond, will it affect my gratitude and merit points?”
[Host, it won’t affect them at all.]
Her silence only agitated Xiu Ka further. He turned abruptly, gripping her wrist. His emerald eyes gleamed with an unfathomable intensity.
“Do you want me to?”
Mi Yue was adept at reading expressions. Under Xiu Ka’s wolf-like stare, she shook her head against her true feelings.
(Fine, fine, I don’t want you to. Happy now?)
Xiu Ka exhaled in relief, the knot in his chest loosening.
After this incident, no other females in the tribe dared approach Xiu Ka. The males, too, realized that despite his silence, he wasn’t someone to be trifled with.
Mi Yue also gave the sneakers she had prepared earlier to Xiu Ka and Wu Er. Slowly but surely, they were adapting to the strange, modern things she introduced.
For the next half month, the tribe found themselves struggling to make ends meet. The further south they traveled, the scarcer the forests became, replaced mostly by barren plains where dense vegetation was hard to come by.
Even with all their skills, the males had no opportunities to hunt.
The food each family had brought was nearly exhausted, and those who had been less frugal had already resorted to eating only two meals in three days.
Gradually, discontent spread through the tribe, and people began to blame the leadership for the decision to migrate.
“Chief, we haven’t eaten in three days.”
“My child fainted from hunger this morning.”
“That’s right, Chief. We males can endure hunger, but the young females are weak, if they go too long without food, they’ll fall ill.”
The tribesmen surrounded the Tiger Tribe chief, demanding answers.
The chief’s family still had some game left, but to avoid drawing attention, he too had reduced himself to one meal a day. His cheeks were sunken, his cheekbones prominent, and he sighed helplessly. “The migration is the will of the Beast God, we have no choice but to obey. These hardships are temporary. If we endure a little longer, we’ll get through this.”
“Shaman Yue can’t even speak, how do we know he isn’t tricking us?”
“Who’s to say he isn’t just toying with us to get back at us for the rain prayer incident?”
“Shaman Yue has food. I’ve often seen him giving things to Old Wu Er and his grandson.”
“It looked like something made from wheat flour, it smelled delicious even from a distance.”
With just a few words, the males had pushed Mi Yue into the eye of the storm.
“Shaman Yue must still have food. Let’s go ask him for some.”
“Right. If the Beast God wants us to migrate, he must have prepared enough food for us. Let’s go find Shaman Yue.”
So, early in the morning, the Tiger Tribe members swarmed toward Mi Yue’s tent.
From a distance, Wu Er, who was roasting meat, noticed something amiss and quickly called out to Xiu Ka, who was packing up his tent.
“Xiu Ka, something’s wrong! They seem to be going after Shaman Yue, go check on him!”
Xiu Ka turned and saw that some had already reached Mi Yue’s tent, even attempting to force their way inside.
“I’ll go see. If things look bad, you run, leave everything behind.”
“Got it. Hurry! Shaman Yue is timid, don’t let these people scare him.” After spending time with Mi Yue, even Wu Er’s overly kind nature had improved somewhat.
Mi Yue had just traveled from the modern world to the Beast World when she heard footsteps outside her tent, more than one set.
She retrieved an electric stun gun from her system space and waited silently for the right moment.
Outside, the tribesman, unable to find a way to open the tent, grew impatient. His hands transformed into tiger claws, and with sharp nails, he slashed through the fabric.
Just as he stepped inside, Mi Yue seized the moment, raising the stun gun and delivering a high-voltage shock to the intruder’s neck, where the body’s most vulnerable pressure points could quickly render someone unconscious.
The male never expected such a move. Within three seconds, he was foaming at the mouth, his eyes rolling back.
Mi Yue kicked him out of the tent and stepped outside, holding a stun gun in each hand.
Her gaze was icy as she surveyed the crowd.
Seeing a perfectly healthy male collapse and witnessing the crackling “heavenly lightning” in Mi Yue’s hands, the previously aggressive tribesmen immediately backed down.
One by one, they dropped to their knees and kowtowed.
“Shaman Yue, please calm your anger! We truly have no other choice!”
“We beg Shaman Yue to grant us food and save our lives!”
“Begging Shaman Yue to bestow food and save our lives!”
Mi Yue struck two stones together, producing two sharp clicks, a sign of refusal, denial, impossibility.
“Shaman Yue, can you really bear to watch us starve to death?”
“That’s right, you shared food with Xiu Ka and Wu Er, so why can’t you share with us?”
“Wasn’t that food meant for all of us by the Beast God? You’re playing favorites by giving it only to Xiu Ka and Wu Er.”
“Yes, it must be so.”
“Shaman Yue, speak! Where have you hidden all that food?”
The tribespeople pressed forward relentlessly, while the Tiger Tribe chief stood silently at the back, observing the scene.
“A Shaman is forbidden to speak in their lifetime, what do you expect him to say?” A voice as cold as frost cut through the air, growing nearer.
