- Chapter 12 - Held on his Lap
Chu Jinhua blocked the doorway in one swift stride.
“Leaving like this is no fun. It’s been a while since we last saw Miss Li. Why not have her pick you up?”
Another chimed in, “Don’t say a word. We’ll help you test her. Remember, she was once your brother’s fiancée, your former sister-in-law. Who knows? Maybe she still only has your brother in her heart, not you.”
“Exactly! If you want to leave, Li Su has to come get you.”
Well, that settled it.
He wasn’t going home tonight.
The freshly changed bedsheets at home would have to be enjoyed by Li Su alone.
But when Huo Xuanye actually handed over his phone, a faint flicker of anticipation stirred in his chest.
What if?
What if Li Su really came for him?
Chu Jinhua dialed Li Su’s number. The moment the ringtone sounded, he felt even more excited than Huo Xuanye.
“It’s ringing, it’s ringing!”
Everyone in the private room fixed their eyes on Chu Jinhua.
Huo Xuanye sat quietly, sipping his drink, outwardly unfazed but inwardly praying: Li Su, pick up. Li Su, pick up.
Chu Jinhua lowered his voice, though his face was alight with excitement. “She answered!”
“Good evening, Miss Li. Young Master Huo seems to have had a bit too much to drink tonight, he keeps calling your name. Could you come pick him up?”
Huo Xuanye pointed at himself, eyes questioning: Did I? When did I call her name?
Li Su’s soft voice came through. “Where’s his driver?”
Driver?
Driver…
Right, there was still the driver!
Chu Jinhua’s eyes darted as he spun a tale. “The driver had a stomachache and went to the emergency room. Miss Li, would you be able to come?”
“Address.”
“Zhenwei Xuan, Ruyi Hall.”
Li Su hung up.
Chu Jinhua returned the phone to Huo Xuanye. “Damn, damn, Li Su is actually coming to get you!”
Huo Xuanye ran his thumb over the phone screen, his expression cool and smug. “That’s just how much charm I’ve got.”
“I don’t believe it. Li Su probably didn’t realize—she still thinks of you as her brother-in-law!”
“Or maybe it’s because of Young Master Huo’s face. Look how much he resembles his brother, just an extra mole on the tip of his nose.”
“She’s using you as a substitute, man. Wake up! The esteemed Second Young Master of the Huo family, playing stand-in?”
His friends were both envious and jealous that Li Su was coming for Huo Xuanye.
Why?
Why him?
Just because his face looked like Huo Zhenzhou’s?
Unfair!
So unfair.
“None of you even have the chance to be substitutes,” Huo Xuanye retorted smugly.
Then, a faint unease crept in. “Li Su is my wife. Keep your thoughts clean, don’t even think about her.”
“We’re not, we’re not.”
“I’m the most upright. We’ve been friends for years, and we’ll stay friends for life.”
Huo Xuanye couldn’t shake the odd feeling in their words.
But the thought of Li Su coming for him lifted his mood. He drank quietly, secretly pleased.
The door to the private room swung open, and everyone turned in unison.
But it wasn’t Li Su, just a waiter.
The waiter flinched under their collective gaze but still delivered the drinks.
“Who ordered these?”
“We’re about to leave. Why order more?”
“Shouldn’t we offer Miss Li a drink when she arrives?”
“I specially ordered fruit wine for her, pear-flavored.”
In Huo Xuanye’s memory, Li Su rarely drank.
The night her brother returned was the first time he had ever seen her so drunk since knowing her.
A few minutes later, the private room door opened again.
What greeted the eyes was a face of exquisite beauty, a bewitching red dress, black strappy high heels, and not a single piece of jewelry adorning her. Yet, with just that delicately painted face and eyes brimming with autumn charm, she exuded an aura of innate elegance and grace.
As Li Su walked, the hem of her dress swayed gently, the soft light caressing every inch of her porcelain skin, enveloping her in a hazy glow.
For a moment, the room fell eerily silent.
Though they had all seen Li Su before, tonight she seemed exceptionally beautiful, more so than ever.
“Wifey, you came to pick me up~”
Huo Xuanye feigned a dazed look, his tall figure rising unsteadily as he deliberately staggered toward her.
His heavy body slumped against Li Su, his arm sneaking around her back as he leaned in close, his alcohol-laced breath hot against her ear. He whispered, “Wifey, this dress is a little revealing~”
Long, wavy hair, a red backless dress, just what was Li Su planning tonight?
Li Su wasn’t used to Huo Xuanye being this close. A tingling itch spread across her ear, and she nudged him. “Stand straight.”
“Can’t stand straight~”
He could have managed just fine, but now that his wife was here, he suddenly felt weak.
Right now, he was a fragile little puppy who needed his wife’s support.
“Miss Li, happy newlywed life!”
Li Su responded gently, “Thank you.”
“He’s quite heavy. How about letting him sit for a while, drink some yogurt or honey water to sober up? Miss Li, just set him down.”
Chu Jinhua stepped forward, about to pull Huo Xuanye away from Li Su.
Huo Xuanye shot him a sharp glare. What were these so-called friends trying to do?
No way.
Huo Xuanye tightened his grip around Li Su’s waist and gave it a subtle squeeze.
Li Su instantly understood. “You all enjoy yourselves. We won’t stay.”
Huo Xuanye leaned against Li Su’s shoulder, clinging to her like a conjoined twin as they walked out of the private room.
The others in the room: “…”
Truly Li Su, not even losing her temper over this. As expected of the gentle, elegant, and poised beauty.
Once outside, Li Su patted Huo Xuanye. “Stop pretending.”
“I’m not pretending.”
“Huo Xuanye, you texted me to call you, then called me to pick you up, wasn’t it just to leave the gathering?” Li Su pushed him away. “Walk on your own. You’re heavy.”
Huo Xuanye smirked before leisurely releasing her slender waist. He stood there lazily, his dark, deep phoenix eyes fixed on her. “Wifey, any plans for tonight?”
“Going home to sleep.”
“Oh~”
Huo Xuanye’s smile was enigmatic. Originally, he had wanted to ask where Li Su had been tonight, dressed so stunningly.
But Li Su had always been the pampered young miss. Except for the period when her brother went missing and she neglected her appearance, she was always immaculately put together.
Inside the car, Huo Xuanye lounged lazily, his long legs spread wide. His black dress pants brushed against the red hem of her dress, his red-soled black shoes beside her red-soled heels, matching in color, as if they were wearing couple shoes.
“Huo Xuanye, is the back seat not wide enough for you?”
He really was insufferable, even his sitting posture was so domineering.
Huo Xuanye lazily lifted his eyelids. “Am I crowding you?”
Li Su tugged at her dress. “You’re crowding my dress.”
“That’s an easy fix.”
Huo Xuanye suddenly reached out and pulled Li Su onto his lap, her delicate frame settling over him as the red hem of her dress draped over his black suit pants, an intimate scene that would make anyone blush.
He had held her like this on the night they registered their marriage, but she had been too drunk to remember clearly.
Tonight was different. She was completely sober.
The scent of alcohol clung to Huo Xuanye, and Li Su couldn’t tell just how much he had drunk.
Her fair fingertips lightly tapped against his chest. “Huo Xuanye, do you even know what you’re doing?”
