“Study.”
Zhou Motang caught up to him and grabbed his arm. “What are you going to do in the study?”
Huo Zhenzhou’s mind was in turmoil. His amnesia left him unsettled, and recent events had only deepened his unease.
“Familiarize myself with the surroundings.”
“What about me?”
Zhou Motang quickly tightened her grip on his arm, her voice soft. “I’m unfamiliar with this place too. You’re the only person I know here. Can I stay with you?”
Huo Zhenzhou didn’t answer but pulled her along to the study.
Once inside, he opened a drawer, took out a card, and handed it to her. “Take this. Have the driver take you shopping. I need some time alone. There shouldn’t be a password, spend as you like.”
“Huo Zhenzhou, did you regret marrying me after seeing Li Su?” Zhou Motang didn’t take the card, her eyes searching his.
Huo Zhenzhou remained expressionless. “No.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “When you regain your memories, will you divorce me and get back together with her?”
“I’m not as pretty as her, my figure isn’t as good, my family background is worse, and I can’t dance. What do I have that compares to her? How can you expect me to believe you?”
Huo Zhenzhou’s face still ached, and now his head throbbed too. He just wanted to go through his past work materials in the study, even if his memories didn’t return, at least he could regain his professional skills.
Being idle on the island while recovering had made him restless.
Only after returning to the Huo residence did he realize, he was a workaholic.
Huo Zhenzhou answered patiently, “Tangtang, no. Trust me, okay?”
“Okay, I trust you.”
Zhou Motang threw herself into his arms, clinging tightly, her voice trembling.
“A-Zhou, I’m sorry. If I had paid attention to the news earlier and connected you to the missing eldest son of the Huo family, you might have returned home sooner, received better treatment, and never been separated from the one you loved.”
“I know you only agreed to marry me because of my grandfather’s dying wish, but I really, really love you.”
“You’re the only person I have in this world. Please don’t abandon me, okay?”
“Otherwise, I truly won’t know where to go.”
Huo Zhenzhou gently stroked her back. “You don’t need to apologize. It wasn’t your fault. If your grandfather hadn’t saved me, I wouldn’t be here now.”
His feelings for her were rooted more in gratitude than love.
But gratitude doesn’t last forever.
“A-Zhou~”
“I don’t want to be apart from you~”
Zhou Motang’s emotions were still fragile. Huo Zhenzhou relented. “If you don’t want to go shopping, stay here on the sofa with me.”
“Okay.”
As long as she was by Huo Zhenzhou’s side, a credit card meant nothing. She would gain far more in the future.
Besides, Huo Zhenzhou’s parents seemed like well-mannered people. While Li Su had clothes and jewelry bought by Huo Xuanye, Huo Zhenzhou’s parents had also gifted her plenty.
Even if they didn’t like or accept her, as long as Huo Zhenzhou stood by her, her position in the Huo family wouldn’t be difficult.
Sitting on the black leather sofa with her phone, Zhou Motang watched Huo Zhenzhou at his desk not far away. She typed his and Li Su’s names into her phone.
Their past unfolded on the screen.
Li Su at a dance competition, sponsored by Huo Zhenzhou. Her winning moment, him presenting the award. The two standing together, so radiant they dimmed the stage lights.
So what?
Huo Zhenzhou and Li Su were already a thing of the past.
Zhou Motang lifted her gaze, the sunlight from outside falling on Huo Zhenzhou. Despite the purplish bruises on his face, they did nothing to diminish his strikingly handsome features.
Truth be told, she had learned of Huo Zhenzhou’s identity not long after her grandfather had saved him.
There was internet and phone signal at home, she could see everything happening online every day.
But she didn’t regret not telling Huo Zhenzhou.
She didn’t regret letting her grandfather entrust her to Huo Zhenzhou on his deathbed.
She didn’t regret deceiving Huo Zhenzhou.
If she had let Huo Zhenzhou return to the Huo family from the start, at best, she would have received some compensation, nothing compared to what she could gain as the young madam of the Huo family.
The title of “Madam Huo” just felt different.
Zhou Motang had just finished crying, her eyes still red and damp, but a faint smile curled at the corners of her lips as she admired Huo Zhenzhou’s spacious, well-lit study with satisfaction.
Though the paintings on the wall were beyond her understanding, they exuded an air of immense luxury, so expensive it felt like something she could never attain, no matter how many lifetimes she worked.
Indeed, the true dividing line among humans was the amniotic fluid they were born in.
And Huo Zhenzhou wasn’t as difficult to handle as she had thought. The moment she tearfully told him he was all she had left, his heart softened at the thought of her grandfather.
So…
She absolutely could not let Huo Zhenzhou discover her secret.
Night fell.
In a private dining room at a restaurant in Jing City, Huo Xuanye was already on his fifth glass of alcohol.
“Second Young Master Huo, your tolerance isn’t what it used to be tonight, are you raising fish in that glass?”
“You just don’t get it, do you? Our Second Young Master Huo is a married man now, how’s he supposed to explain himself if he comes home wasted?”
“Every man understands~”
The group laughed with knowing smirks.
Getting drunk and reckless was one thing, but drinking too much and being unable to perform was another.
Chu Jinhua slung an arm over Huo Xuanye’s shoulder. “Bro, I’ve gotta ask, your brother married someone else, so why did you rush into a flash marriage with his ex-fiancée? Is it like the rumors online say? Did you have a thing for Li Su all along?”
Huo Xuanye shoved his hand away. “Don’t talk nonsense. How could I have had a crush on her? She was my sister-in-law. If I liked her, wouldn’t that make me a creep?”
Another friend chimed in, “Then why marry her in a hurry and couldn’t wait to announce it? I never knew Second Young Master Huo had a hobby of being a propaganda minister.”
“You’ve all met Li Su, seen her performances, but none of you have seen her cry. A beauty in tears—I couldn’t bear it, so I sacrificed myself to fulfill her love for this face~” Huo Xuanye lazily tapped his own cheek, his expression smug.
“HAHAHA”
“Laugh all you want!” Huo Xuanye scowled. “I never had a crush on her before, so don’t go spreading nonsense.”
“Sure, sure.”
“Right, right.”
“Second Young Master Huo married Miss Li just to help her move on from her past relationship, so of course you’ll let her sleep alone, right?”
“Since we’re drinking tonight and can’t race, let’s go play cards!”
Huo Xuanye didn’t respond, holding his glass in one hand while typing with the other.
[Huo Xuanye: Wife, call me and tell me to come home. Otherwise, your husband’s getting dragged into a night of gambling.]
Truthfully, Huo Xuanye could have refused on his own.
He wasn’t sure why he had sent that message to Li Su.
[Li Su: Now that your brother’s back, you can relax a little. Go have fun.]
Huo Xuanye: “???”
His expression darkened instantly. What did Li Su mean by that?
He wasn’t her brother-in-law anymore, he was her husband!
She was actually okay with him staying out all night???
And mentioning his brother, with him not at home, was Li Su planning to make a big impression in front of Huo Zhenzhou?
Damn it!
He just got married and didn’t want to be cuckolded!
“Where are we playing?”
“The usual spot.”
“Alright, have the driver wait at the door.”
While his friends were still discussing, Huo Xuanye suddenly stood up. “You guys go ahead. My wife just texted me to come home and keep her company!”
