- Chapter 13 - Honey, Can We Share the Bed Tonight?
Huo Xuanye’s gaze was hazy as his slender fingers idly played with Li Su’s hair, the slightly curled ends wrapping around his fingers before loosening again. “I know my wife dislikes me taking up space, so I let you sit on my lap. It’s all yours now.”
Li Su explained, “I just wanted you to sit a little less… expansively.”
“What man doesn’t sit expansively?”
“Sophistry.”
Huo Xuanye slowly leaned closer. She was fragrant, beautiful, and delicate, his eyes didn’t know where to settle. Every inch of her was worth admiring over and over.
His burning gaze met hers. “Speaking of sophistry, shouldn’t you start calling me ‘husband’? You’ve only been using my name. When it’s just the two of us, it’s fine, but at the Huo residence, people might get suspicious.”
The driver in front: “???”
Right, I’m not a person.
I’m just livestock.
There are only two of you in this car.
Li Su leaned back, putting distance between them. “Let me… mentally prepare myself.”
“Sure~”
Huo Xuanye settled into a patient stance, as if he wouldn’t let her off his lap until she called him “husband.”
Li Su really couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Just days ago, she had been Huo Xuanye’s future sister-in-law. Now, she was sitting on his lap, on those two firm, long legs.
So his legs could actually stay together.
Huo Xuanye lounged lazily, murmuring, “We’re almost home. How much longer do you need to prepare~?”
“Wife~”
“Su Su~”
Li Su had to admit, her adaptability wasn’t as strong as Huo Xuanye’s, nor was her mental fortitude.
She gave up. “I can’t say it.”
Huo Xuanye didn’t push her. “Take your time. I’m in no hurry. Sooner or later, you’ll call me ‘husband’ willingly.”
“Okay.”
Then she’d wait and see.
Fortunately, tonight was different from last night. No one from the Huo family was downstairs, and no one noticed their return.
Huo Xuanye opened the door like a gentleman, stepping aside to let Li Su enter first.
Once inside, Li Su noticed the gray-apricot curtains had been replaced with milky blue retro jacquard ones, layered with dreamy white butterfly tulle.
The black coffee table now held a white porcelain vase with a few pink and blue peonies.
Further in, the black-and-gray bedsheets she had disliked were also gone, replaced with a soft blue set matching the curtains, complete with lace trim.
Such a beautiful, dreamy princess bed was, of course, more suited for her.
Li Su made the executive decision. “I slept on the sofa last night. Tonight, it’s your turn.”
“No!”
Huo Xuanye’s instant refusal left Li Su speechless.
She slowly turned, lifting her eyes to his face. “If it were your brother, he’d let me have the bed.”
He said he’d be a substitute, not that he’d actually act like one!
“When you went out with my brother, you either booked two rooms or shared a bed. There’s no way he’d let you have the bed while he slept on the sofa.” Huo Xuanye grinned at her. “Honey, I may be an honest man, but don’t try to trick me like that.”
Huo Xuanye had been drinking, the tips of his eyes tinged red. When he smiled, his gaze was mesmerizing, paired with the black mole on the bridge of his nose and the slight curl of his lips like some kind of incubus.
Li Su could almost see a slender black tail materializing behind him, the pointed tip swaying smugly as it reached for her.
“You’re nothing like your brother. He’s mature, steady, indifferent to women, and respects me.”
“Where have I disrespected you? You’re not married to him yet. If you were, could he still be a monk?” Huo Xuanye scoffed lightly. “I’ll go knock on the door right now and see if my brother and his new wife are sleeping separately, one on the bed, the other on the sofa.”
With that, he turned to leave.
“Huo Xuanye, are you insane?”
Knocking on a married couple’s door in the middle of the night.
Isn’t that embarrassing?
Had Huo Xuanye drunk too much and lost his mind?
“Huo Xuanye, stop right there!”
At Li Su’s sharp tone, Huo Xuanye turned around, his reddened eyes tinged with a hint of grievance.
He said weakly, “I’ve never heard you call my brother’s name so harshly. The difference between love and indifference is really obvious…”
He cried or rather, pretended to.
“Go on then, go knock. Just don’t drag me into it if you get beaten or scolded.” Li Su waved him off. “Hurry up.”
Let’s see if Huo Zhenzhou would teach him a lesson.
“Never mind. It’s pointless. We’re married—what’s wrong with sharing a bed?” Huo Xuanye returned to her side.
“Li Su, just treat me as his substitute. I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’m clean, never held another girl’s hand except yours.”
As he spoke, he pulled her into his arms, burying his face against her shoulder, his breathing heavy.
“I’m not some scoundrel. I won’t take advantage of you without your permission.”
“I swear!”
Li Su remained still, letting Huo Xuanye hold her. Just like his earlier claim that she’d eventually willingly call him “husband,” what was the point of being coy now that they were married?
Huo Xuanye nuzzled gently against her skin. “Wife, can we sleep together tonight?”
“Do whatever you want.”
That meant yes!
Huo Xuanye tightened his embrace excitedly, breathing in the fresh, delicate scent of pear blossoms with a hint of sweetness that clung to her.
He inhaled deeply.
“Huo Xuanye, are you a dog?”
“It’s so hot, let me go~”
Huo Xuanye released her. “Should I lower the AC? Two people will naturally sleep hotter than one.”
“Do whatever you want.”
Li Su mercilessly went to change.
She had said “do whatever you want” twice tonight. If he asked whether they could consummate their marriage, how would she respond?
Probably slap him twice to knock some sense into him.
After her shower, Li Su leaned against the headboard, reviewing the rehearsal footage from tonight’s dance performance, oblivious to when the sound of water from the bathroom stopped.
Just as the video fell silent, she heard footsteps.
She looked up, her gaze immediately drawn to the sculpted ridges of his abs. Droplets of water trailed down his shoulders, glistening faintly against his defined torso. The sinuous lines of his Adonis belt curved enticingly along his hips, appearing and disappearing with each step. His black shorts hung loosely from his waist, as if they might slip off with the slightest tug.
Huo Xuanye casually hitched the shorts higher.
What was that about?
As if she’d pull them down, why the adjustment?
If he was so concerned about propriety, why wasn’t he wearing a shirt?
Unbelievable!
Li Su lowered her eyes to the video. “Did you only buy sleep pants?”
“You guessed it, so smart, wife.” Huo Xuanye leaned in to peek at her tablet screen.
The footage showed Li Su spinning and leaping, her movements light and graceful.
Out of the corner of her eye, Li Su noticed water droplets clinging to the ends of Huo Xuanye’s hair, silently falling onto his shoulders and spreading like tiny ripples.
“Wife, were you secretly checking me out?”
