Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 48.1
The assistant assigned to Ruan Yang by the company was Xiao Ding. Over the past two days, Xiao Ding had clearly sensed that Ruan Yang seemed somewhat distracted.
For instance, just moments ago, Ruan Yang had given her a phone number and asked her to call the owner to schedule an audition for that afternoon. But when Xiao Ding returned after making the call, she found Ruan Yang sitting at the desk, staring blankly at a chat interface on a green app.
Her fingers idly swiped the screen, as if hoping to summon a new message.
Xiao Ding had never peeked at Ruan Yang’s chat history with this person, but judging by Ruan Yang’s dazed expression, she figured it must be someone Ruan Yang had feelings for.
She approached cautiously, not wanting to disturb her, and whispered, ” Director Ruan?”
Xiao Ding had just graduated this year and was actually a year or two older than Ruan Yang. Yet, for some reason, even though Ruan Yang had told her she could address her by name, Xiao Ding always found it difficult to do so.
Perhaps it was Ruan Yang’s commanding presence.
Xiao Ding often caught herself almost blurting out “Sis Ruan” on several occasions.
“What is it?” Hearing her name, Ruan Yang turned off her phone screen and looked up at Xiao Ding. “Did you confirm the time with them?”
“Yes,” Xiao Ding nodded. “I scheduled the audition with your friend for 3 p.m. this afternoon. I mentioned that you specifically asked me to reach out to her, and she seemed very happy about it.”
Ruan Yang had mostly regained her composure by now. She frowned and gave Xiao Ding a scrutinizing look. “There’s no need to add extra comments like that. Just do what I ask you to do.”
The project Ruan Yang was about to direct had evolved into a major production and was highly valued by Run Ying. Recently, numerous actors, regardless of their status, had managed to obtain her contact information through various channels and extended olive branches her way.
She had simply revisited the list of actors interested in the role and found that, compared to the others, Qu Shanshan was slightly more suitable.
It wasn’t a matter of being “specific,” as Xiao Ding had implied.
Seeing Ruan Yang’s displeasure, Xiao Ding realized her attempt to flatter had missed the mark and softly replied, “Understood.”
Fortunately, Ruan Yang didn’t press the issue further. She stood up and walked out, her hand unconsciously reopening the chat with that person again.
Xiao Ding remained where she was, unable to shake her confusion.
Ruan Yang had joined the company not long ago as an unexpected addition. Soon after her arrival, she shifted the company’s operational direction, shrewdly selecting several dramas to invest in. A few of these projects had already shown returns, helping to reduce Run Ying’s losses for the month.
This alone was quite astonishing. But even more surprising was Ruan Yang’s stubborn insistence on directing a project that the planning department had nearly abandoned.
According to Run Ying’s upper management, this move was akin to Ruan Yang cutting off her own path to success.
It seemed as though she was staking all her opportunities on this one production.
For a while, speculation about her ran rampant within the company, with most people viewing Ruan Yang’s prospects skeptically.
Yet Ruan Yang herself appeared utterly unbothered. All the doubts and conjectures about her seemed to pale in comparison to a single message from that person.
Who could it be?
At that moment, Xiao Ding’s curiosity reached its peak.
Around two in the afternoon, Ruan Yang received a notification that Qu Shanshan had arrived for the audition. By the time she hurried to the audition room, Qu Shanshan was already standing on the stage.
Spotting Ruan Yang, Qu Shanshan flashed a bright smile and waved at her. It seemed she had a lot to say, but considering the situation, she held back.
Ruan Yang nodded slightly and took her seat. The other assistant directors and screenwriters had also arrived.
The audition script had been sent to Qu Shanshan in advance. After a brief moment to compose herself, she began her performance.
All the actors auditioning performed the same scene, and Ruan Yang and the others had grown somewhat numb to it. Although Qu Shanshan’s performance was solid, it didn’t particularly stand out.
Still, she had a natural talent and flair, making her noticeably better than the previous candidates.
Moreover, as Qu Shanshan had mentioned to Ruan Yang over the phone, her appearance and personality closely matched the protagonist Omega in the script. By the time she finished her performance, Ruan Yang noticed several people nodding in approval and marking a check on Qu Shanshan’s profile.
Ruan Yang remained silent, so an assistant director stepped in and asked Qu Shanshan to take a break. An assistant then escorted her out of the room. Before leaving, Qu Shanshan cast a reluctant glance at Ruan Yang.
She was eager to read something in Ruan Yang’s expression, but when she looked over, Ruan Yang’s gaze was fixed on her phone screen, her face impassive and unreadable.
The door closed, and no other candidates were scheduled for the day. The others began discussing Qu Shanshan’s performance, with most agreeing it was quite good.
“Why don’t we go with her? She’s still a student, but I can see the spark in her eyes. With some polishing, her acting skills will surely improve.”
“I agree. Among all the candidates we’ve seen so far, she’s the closest fit for the protagonist. No one else has been more suitable.”
As they whispered among themselves, one of the assistant directors turned to Ruan Yang. “Director Ruan, what do you think?”
They were all aware that Ruan Yang held the final say in the casting for this drama. No matter how much they approved of a candidate, the ultimate decision rested with her.
Ruan Yang shifted her gaze to Qu Shanshan’s profile.
Although Qu Shanshan was, by all accounts, the most suitable candidate so far, Ruan Yang hesitated.
When she first read the script, the first person who came to mind for the protagonist Omega wasn’t Qu Shanshan.
She glanced at her phone again.
But the one she truly wanted would never agree to take on this role.
“I’ll think it over and give you all an answer by tomorrow,” Ruan Yang said, standing up. Ignoring the assistant director’s hesitant expression, she made her way through the crowd and headed for the door.
As soon as she stepped out, she saw Xiao Ding, who had just escorted Qu Shanshan out, waiting for her by the entrance.
“What is it?” Ruan Yang asked.
“Director Ruan, your friend said she has more to discuss. She’s waiting for you at the company entrance.”
“More to say?” Ruan Yang tucked her phone away. “I’ll go find her then. You can get back to work.”
Xiao Ding walked away with the documents from Ruan Yang’s hands. Ruan Yang went downstairs and saw Qu Shanshan sitting on the sofa in the lobby. Spotting her, Qu Shanshan hurried over.
“Senior!” Qu Shanshan called out cheerfully. “Long time no see!”
“Yeah, long time no see.” Ruan Yang nodded. She thought Qu Shanshan had come to ask about the audition earlier and was about to say she was still considering it when Qu Shanshan very naturally tugged at the corner of her clothes.
“Want to grab a meal together, Senior? I came all the way from the suburbs near my sister’s place just to audition for your play over forty minutes by car. It’s so far!”
This was a habitual gesture Qu Shanshan often used with Qu Lingxuan, done subconsciously without a second thought.
Ruan Yang, however, glanced down, then turned slightly toward Qu Shanshan, letting the edge of her clothes slip from Qu Shanshan’s grasp.
She glanced outside and noticed a driver in a car retracting his phone, which had been pointed toward the window as if taking a photo.
It seemed to be Qu Shanshan’s driver. Ruan Yang frowned but didn’t dwell on it, saying calmly, “If I’m not mistaken, it’s only a little past three in the afternoon. Are you eating at this hour?”
“We could plan for dinner then,” Qu Shanshan replied, oblivious to Ruan Yang’s subtle withdrawal. She blinked expectantly. “How about it? Want to join? It’s been so long, don’t you miss me at all, Senior?”
That sounded a bit odd.
Ruan Yang studied Qu Shanshan for a moment. Her expression was open and unguarded, making it hard to tell if she was joking.
