Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 36
The night was enchanting.
Xu Zhiyi slightly lowered her gaze, her eyes falling on the hairpin in Ruan Yang’s hand. The chill in her expression seemed to soften slightly. A few seconds later, she reached out and picked up the hairpin with her fingertips.
Another sunshine doll.
Xu Zhiyi suddenly grew curious, why did Ruan Yang like sunshine dolls so much?
But she didn’t actually ask.
She let out an almost imperceptible sigh, as if all the emotions of the day had dissipated into the wind with that breath.
She pinned the blue sunshine doll hairpin at her temple. Her fair complexion made her look even more like a porcelain doll with the hairpin on.
“Does it look good?” she suddenly asked, a slight smile curling at the corners of her lips.
Ruan Yang stared intently, seemingly mesmerized.
The spot on her palm where Xu Zhiyi had lightly touched still tingled. Ruan Yang slipped her hand into her pocket and nodded earnestly. “It looks good.”
Really good.
Xu Zhiyi also took out a mirror to check. She adjusted the hairpin slightly, a hint of amusement flickering in her eyes.
As she put the mirror away, she also concealed the smile in her eyes. Blinking, she looked ahead and said calmly, “Let’s get in the car first.”
Even though Xu Zhiyi didn’t say anything, Ruan Yang could sense that her mood had improved considerably.
Just then, a breeze swept by, lifting a strand of Xu Zhiyi’s hair, which drifted to rest against Ruan Yang’s chest.
Through the thin fabric of her clothes, Ruan Yang felt as if her heart had been gently brushed.
She glanced at the hairpin once more, then walked to the other side of the car, opened the door, and got in.
Inside the car, Ruan Yang sat beside Xu Zhiyi. The driver was in front, and faint rustling sounds came from the back.
Ruan Yang turned to look and happened to catch Jiangjiang, sitting in the back seat, staring at them wide-eyed, her mouth agape as if she could fit two eggs in it.
Perhaps because the shock and confusion in Jiangjiang’s eyes were almost palpable, Ruan Yang was unusually amused by her expression.
Suppressing the slight curve of her lips, she settled into her seat, feeling the car move forward.
Through the rearview mirror, Ruan Yang could see Xu Zhiyi’s profile. She was staring out the window, lost in thought.
The hairpin rested quietly at her temple, and as Ruan Yang looked at it, she felt a sense of tranquility wash over her.
The car headed toward the city center and soon stopped in front of an upscale restaurant.
This establishment was exclusive to specific members, with exorbitant prices that kept ordinary people away, making the entire building exceptionally quiet.
Xu Zhiyi got out of the car, instructing the driver to take Jiangjiang back first, then walked straight inside.
Ruan Yang followed Xu Zhiyi, and the two stopped in front of a large private room. A server opened the door for them. Inside, Ruan Qingyu was chatting cheerfully with Xu Rongjiang.
When the door opened, Ruan Qingyu saw that Xu Zhiyi had accompanied Ruan Yang. A flicker of surprise crossed her eyes.
But soon, her smile deepened. She stood up and patted the seat beside her. “Yangyang, you’re here. Come sit by Mom.”
Ruan Yang glanced at Xu Zhiyi, then walked over and took the seat.
Xu Zhiyi cast a brief look at Xu Rongjiang, who was seated at the head of the table, then expressionlessly took a seat beside him.
Xu Rongjiang had just told the waiter they could start serving the dishes. Seeing Xu Zhiyi sit down without a word and not even greet him, he immediately grew displeased.
“Xu Zhiyi, is this how you treat your father?! I saw you on TV just now, smiling so happily at the air. Why do you look like this the moment you see me? All you do is show yourself in public, how could someone like you be my daughter?”
Xu Zhiyi offered a faint, emotionless smile. “What’s wrong with showing myself in public? I earned that money with my own abilities, without relying on anyone.”
Xu Rongjiang felt as if he had been mocked. Just as he was about to say more, Xu Zhiyi spoke again, “This meal must be quite expensive, right?”
The dishes, already prepared, were brought out one after another. Xu Zhiyi shifted her gaze from Xu Rongjiang to the exquisite spread on the table.
She picked up her wine glass, took a sip, raised an eyebrow, and said lazily, “I’m in a decent mood today, so I can reluctantly sit here with you for a while. But if you insist on picking a fight.”
She set the wine glass down on the table with a deliberate thud, the red wine inside sloshing back and forth without pause.
Xu Zhiyi’s expression sharpened abruptly. “Then no one will enjoy this meal tonight.”
“You ungrateful girl!” Xu Rongjiang’s face turned livid with rage, but as soon as he stood up, Ruan Qingyu pulled him back.
“Enough, Rongjiang. It’s Mid-Autumn Festival today, a time for celebration. Don’t argue with Zhiyi. Why don’t you both sit down and enjoy the meal peacefully?”
Xu Zhiyi had already picked up her chopsticks and begun eating leisurely. Seeing this, Xu Rongjiang felt his anger boiling inside with no outlet.
Furious, he shook his arm and sat back down, growling, “What kind of behavior is this?!”
Ruan Qingyu continued to soothe Xu Rongjiang, while Ruan Yang sat quietly, picking out the chili peppers from the dish in front of her.
By the time Xu Rongjiang finished venting, Ruan Yang had finished removing the peppers. She stood up and swapped her dish with a plate of greens in front of Xu Zhiyi.
“Yang Yang,” Xu Rongjiang’s tone softened noticeably when speaking to Ruan Yang. Suppressing his anger, he spoke like a caring father, “You’re at an age where you need to grow. You should eat more meat, not just vegetables.”
Ruan Yang shook her head gently and replied, “It’s fine, Uncle. I like eating greens.”
This only made Xu Rongjiang glare even more resentfully at Xu Zhiyi, who was comfortably enjoying her food.
Xu Zhiyi happened to look up just then, offering a faint, provocative smile.
The rest of the meal passed in heavy silence, with Ruan Qingyu cheerfully serving Ruan Yang more dishes throughout.
After the meal, when Ruan Qingyu got up to use the restroom, Ruan Yang followed her out.
She waited by the door until Ruan Qingyu emerged, then grabbed her hand and pulled her into a secluded corner.
“Alright,” Ruan Yang crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, looking at her mother. “What’s got you so happy today?”
She had noticed from the moment they arrived Ruan Qingyu was in an unusually good mood, which meant something favorable must have happened, and it was likely related to Xu Rongjiang.
Sure enough, the moment Ruan Yang finished asking, Ruan Qingyu seemed to have lost all interest in hiding it. She let out a soft laugh, her tone filled with satisfaction and happiness.
“Yangyang, your Uncle Xu finally told me he wants to marry me.”
Ruan Yang froze instantly, even forgetting to breathe. Her own voice seemed to drift from somewhere far away as she mechanically asked, “…When did he say that?”
“He told me this afternoon,” Ruan Qingyu, completely absorbed in her own happiness, didn’t notice Ruan Yang’s unusual reaction. “Rongjiang said he’ll marry me in three months, and at the latest, he’ll announce our good news next month. Yangyang, I’m finally going to marry the person I’ve loved since I was eighteen!”
This happiness didn’t seem to affect Ruan Yang.
After hearing the news, Ruan Yang’s jawline tightened abruptly.
She glanced toward the end of the hallway and suddenly pulled out her phone. The teru teru bozu charm dangling from it swayed in the air.
It seemed a bit faded.
When they returned to the private room, Xu Zhiyi had already left, leaving only Xu Rongjiang behind.
Judging by Xu Rongjiang’s expression, Ruan Yang guessed that he and Xu Zhiyi must have argued again, ending on bad terms.
After the meal, Ruan Qingyu insisted on taking Ruan Yang home to stay for the night. Unable to refuse, Ruan Yang followed her back.
Fortunately, Xu Rongjiang didn’t accompany them. It seemed he had work matters at his company and decided to stay there for the night.
After spending the night at the Xu residence, Ruan Yang woke up the next day and was having breakfast when the police officer from the previous night called, reminding her to come to the station to give her statement.
Ruan Yang agreed and then gave the film crew an extra half-day off.
Ruan Qingyu wasn’t around, probably out shopping for clothes again. Just as Ruan Yang took a sip of milk, she heard footsteps coming from the staircase.
She looked over and saw Xu Zhiyi in her pajamas, descending the stairs while combing her hair with her fingers.
So Xu Zhiyi had also returned last night.
Xu Zhiyi glanced around and asked, “Auntie Chen, are there any oranges at home? I feel like eating one.”
Auntie Chen hurried in from outside. Just as she was wondering where to find oranges, Ruan Yang spoke up, “There are some on the coffee table.”
Auntie Chen looked and, sure enough, there they were.
As Xu Zhiyi was about to take one, Auntie Chen suddenly turned to Ruan Yang and said, “Miss Ruan Yang, there are two very pretty girls outside who say they’re here to see you.”
Ruan Yang withdrew her gaze from Xu Zhiyi and set down her milk glass. “To see me?”
Who could be looking for her?
“I only recognize one of them. She often appears on TV, I see her all the time!” Auntie Chen racked her brain for the name but found she couldn’t quite recall it.
Thinking it might be some classmates of hers, Ruan Yang said softly, “Then please bring them in, Auntie Chen.”
Auntie Chen agreed, and soon, the figures of Qu Lingxuan and Qu Shanshan appeared before Ruan Yang.
Qu Shanshan was delighted to see Ruan Yang and was about to call out to her directly when she noticed Xu Zhiyi not far away.
Xu Zhiyi was lounging lazily on the sofa, while Ruan Yang sat at the dining table eating breakfast. Though the two weren’t speaking, the atmosphere between them was incredibly harmonious.
It was as if they had spent many, many such days together.
Qu Shanshan suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
How could Xu Zhiyi be living with Ruan Yang?
Qu Lingxuan, who had followed them in, was also stunned.
Her eyes widened, and she stood frozen for a full minute before exclaiming, “You two are…?”
She had only accompanied Qu Shanshan to ask for the home address of the senior who had saved her the night before, intending to express their gratitude. Never in her wildest dreams did she expect to witness such a scene.
Ruan Yang and Xu Zhiyi were living together?!
Since when had they been together?
Qu Lingxuan felt as if her understanding of the world had been slightly distorted.
Aunt Chen, noticing their confusion, asked, “Excuse me, which of our young ladies are you here to see?”
“Which young lady?” Qu Lingxuan asked, somewhat dazed. She pointed back and forth between Xu Zhiyi and Ruan Yang. “These two—”
She trailed off, seemingly struggling to find the right words.
Her brows furrowed tightly, but she couldn’t manage to utter a single word.
“Are you asking about the relationship between our two young ladies?” Aunt Chen, having realized that the two visitors knew both of the young ladies, replied calmly, “The two young ladies are sisters.”
“Sisters?” Qu Lingxuan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Her eyes widened even further.
“Those two are sisters?”
