Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 37
Aunt Chen had no idea why this woman was reacting so strongly.
Feeling a bit flustered, she glanced at Xu Zhiyi, who shook her head slightly. Taking the hint, Aunt Chen retreated.
Just as Ruan Yang finished her breakfast, she stood up and looked at the Qu sisters. “Who are you here to see?” she asked.
Qu Shanshan snapped out of her daze first. “We’re here to see you, Senior,” she said, turning to Ruan Yang. “My sister heard about what happened last night, how you saved me and insisted on bringing me over to thank you in person. I couldn’t talk her out of it, so I had to ask around for your home address. Sorry if we’re intruding.”
As she spoke, Qu Shanshan seemed to realize how abrupt their visit was, and her voice gradually trailed off. “If we’re disturbing you, I apologize!”
Aunt Chen brought tea for both Qu Lingxuan and Qu Shanshan. Ruan Yang sat down opposite Xu Zhiyi and picked up an orange to peel.
“Disturbing? Not at all,” Xu Zhiyi said casually, her eyes fixed on the orange in Ruan Yang’s hands. “Find a seat, then. I’d like to hear all about the good deeds Ruan Yang performed last night.”
Even though Xu Zhiyi’s demeanor was relaxed, Qu Shanshan couldn’t shake off a vague sense of pressure. After only a moment’s hesitation, she sat down beside Ruan Yang.
Qu Lingxuan’s gaze kept shifting between Xu Zhiyi and Ruan Yang. Her mind was filled with memories of that night in the hospital the quiet, dimly lit lounge, and the things Ruan Yang had said to her.
Perhaps this was what Ruan Yang meant when she claimed to have known Xu Zhiyi longer than Qu Lingxuan had.
If they were sisters, what was the meaning behind Ruan Yang’s words that night? Could it be that Ruan Yang was simply possessive of her sister and didn’t want anyone else getting close to Xu Zhiyi, so she deliberately said those things to intimidate her?
The more Qu Lingxuan thought about it, the more plausible this explanation seemed. Relieved by her conclusion, she walked over and sat beside Xu Zhiyi. “Zhiyi, you should have told me earlier that Ruan Yang is your sister. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have.”
Xu Zhiyi rested her arm on the back of the sofa. “Wouldn’t have what?”
Wouldn’t have treated Ruan Yang so coldly, leaving Qu Lingxuan feeling extremely awkward around her now.
Qu Lingxuan shook her head. “Nothing, never mind.”
Seeing that her sister was chatting with Ruan Yang, Qu Lingxuan relaxed and continued making conversation with Xu Zhiyi. But Xu Zhiyi didn’t seem particularly interested in talking, responding only briefly while her gaze kept drifting toward Ruan Yang.
“So,” Xu Zhiyi suddenly turned to Qu Lingxuan and then to Qu Shanshan, “what exactly did Ruan Yang do last night? Aren’t you here to thank her?”
“Sister Zhiyi,” Qu Shanshan said, sitting stiffly beside Ruan Yang as if holding herself tense for some reason, “Senior Ruan Yang saved me last night. I was drugged and taken to a hotel, but she showed up and called the police to help me.”
She then recounted the details of the previous night and what she had learned from the police afterward.
At the end of her story, Qu Shanshan seemed to remember something and asked curiously, “By the way, Senior, did you have something urgent to attend to later last night? I saw you running off in a hurry was everything okay?”
Ruan Yang set down the fruit knife, seemingly only glancing at Xu Zhiyi unintentionally as she did so, before withdrawing her gaze and saying to Qu Shanshan, “It’s nothing.”
Xu Zhiyi also noticed that glance. She raised an eyebrow slightly, then lowered her head as if pondering something.
Qu Shanshan pressed her lips together, watching as Ruan Yang began removing the white pith from the orange segments.
She lowered her voice and whispered, “Thank you so much, senior. Su Xinzhi has been harassing me for almost half a year now, and it’s seriously affecting my life. My sister is usually very busy, and I didn’t dare tell her about this. If it weren’t for what happened, I really don’t know when Su Xinzhi would have given up.”
Ruan Yang continued her task without pause: “You should have told your sister earlier.”
“Yeah, my sister already scolded me for it.” Qu Shanshan stared intently at Ruan Yang’s profile, her nails unconsciously digging into her palms. “The doctor detected traces of a sedative in my system last night. According to imperial law, Su Xinzhi will most likely be sentenced.”
The empire had strengthened protections for Omegas this year, enacting multiple statutes. Drugging and attempting to assault an Omega would land Su Xinzhi in prison for several years at least.
“I really have to thank you, senior.” After a moment’s thought, Qu Shanshan seemed to recall something and shook her head. “No, thank you, Director.”
“Just call me senior,” Ruan Yang said. “Zhiyi doesn’t know about any of this yet.”
Zhiyi?
Was this how the sisters usually addressed each other?
Qu Shanshan felt somewhat puzzled but still nodded: “Okay, senior!”
Whether it was Ruan Yang’s imagination or not, she felt Qu Shanshan’s tone today was different from usual strangely more restrained.
She didn’t dwell on it. After finishing removing all the pith from the orange, Ruan Yang suddenly lifted it and stared at the fruit for a while.
“Here,” she said, extending the orange toward Qu Shanshan.
“For me?” Qu Shanshan looked at the orange in surprise.
Not expecting Ruan Yang to give her something she’d so patiently prepared, she stared blankly for a moment before accepting it.
As Qu Shanshan gazed at the orange in her hands, Xu Zhiyi silently withdrew her own half-extended hand.
Xu Zhiyi: “…”
Qu Lingxuan thought Xu Zhiyi was reaching for something and said, “Do you need me to get something for you?”
Xu Zhiyi watched as Qu Shanshan broke off a segment of the orange and popped it into her mouth, then expressionlessly averted her gaze.
“No need,” she said suddenly, standing up and offering Qu Lingxuan an apologetic smile before heading upstairs. “I’m still sleepy going back to bed for a while. I won’t see you out, Lingxuan-jie.”
Qu Shanshan didn’t notice Xu Zhiyi’s departure. Happily putting the orange segment in her mouth, her smile suddenly froze, and her features scrunched up abruptly.
After a stiff moment, she still swallowed the orange.
Then she looked at Ruan Yang and smiled: “Thank you, senior.”
Ruan Yang’s gaze returned from where Xu Zhiyi had left. She nodded: “You’re welcome.”
She stood up and said to Qu Lingxuan, “I’ve received your gratitude. Let me walk you out.”
Qu Lingxuan didn’t dwell much on Xu Zhiyi’s attitude today. After all, she had only brought her younger sister along to express gratitude, and being able to see Xu Zhiyi at all was already an unexpected delight.
Hearing Ruan Yang say this, she felt it would be inappropriate to impose any further. Smiling, she stood up and said, “Alright, thank you for your trouble.”
The stark contrast in her demeanor made Ruan Yang glance at Qu Lingxuan briefly. Without saying anything, she walked toward the door.
Qu Lingxuan’s car was parked just outside the courtyard. Leaning against the doorframe, Ruan Yang watched as Qu Shanshan got into the car and waved goodbye.
Still holding the half-eaten orange, Qu Shanshan said, “Don’t worry, Senior, I’ll finish it on the way home.”
A flicker of reluctance crossed Ruan Yang’s eyes. Just as she was about to say something, Qu Lingxuan approached her.
“I’m sorry, Ruan Yang,” Qu Lingxuan said, her smile noticeably warmer. “I wasn’t very polite to you before. At the time, I didn’t know you were Zhiyi’s sister. I thought—”
“You thought I was your love rival, right?” Ruan Yang interrupted.
“Yes,” Qu Lingxuan sighed. “I was too abrupt before. I apologize.”
“There’s no need to apologize,” Ruan Yang replied, not looking at her but gazing into the distance, her tone indifferent. “Because you weren’t wrong.”
What did that mean?
Qu Lingxuan froze for a moment, taking a while to process the implication. Her brows furrowed tightly as she digested the information. Finally, she said, “Ruan Yang, Zhiyi is your sister. Isn’t your attachment to her a bit inappropriate?”
“You already know my surname is Ruan,” Ruan Yang said, tapping her arm lightly with a hint of impatience. “Not Xu.”
Without waiting to see the shock on Qu Lingxuan’s face, Ruan Yang turned and went back inside.
She went upstairs and opened her bedroom door, but as soon as she cracked it open, a pair of pale legs came into view.
Pushing the door open, she saw Xu Zhiyi sitting on her bed, casually tossing an orange into the air and catching it with ease.
Noticing Ruan Yang’s arrival, Xu Zhiyi stopped tossing the orange and gently threw it toward her, saying leisurely, “You’re back.”
Ruan Yang caught the orange effortlessly, her first instinct being to glance at the cardboard box under the TV cabinet.
Relieved to see it undisturbed, she subtly relaxed.
She rubbed her fingertips over the orange peel and said, “Let me peel this for you.”
Xu Zhiyi’s swinging feet suddenly stilled. She narrowed her eyes, remaining silent for a moment before asking, “Do you really enjoy peeling oranges for people?”
Ruan Yang retrieved a fruit knife from her desk, sat down, and began carefully peeling the orange.
She tried her best not to look at Xu Zhiyi in her nightgown, her hands steady and precise.
“Not really,” she replied. “The last one was sour.”
She couldn’t give Xu Zhiyi a sour one.
For some reason, her calm tone made Xu Zhiyi burst into laughter.
“Is that so?” she drawled, her voice laced with a captivating lilt.
Watching those slender, pale hands move slowly and meticulously, patiently picking up each strand of the membrane just as they had in the living room, Xu Zhiyi inexplicably recalled how those same hands had once gripped her waist tightly, their lines subtly tensed.
Her legs suddenly felt weak.
“So last night, you went to rescue your junior, which is why you didn’t make it to watch my performance live?” Xu Zhiyi averted her gaze, scanning the decorations in Ruan Yang’s room as she spoke.
Ruan Yang glanced up at her briefly before returning to her task. “Mm.”
If Qu Lingxuan hadn’t taken that gamble last night, she would have been seated in the best spot in the entire venue, quietly watching Xu Zhiyi shine on stage.
She would have recorded those few minutes with her camera, burned them onto a disc, and placed it in that cherished cardboard box of hers.
Xu Zhiyi nodded but said nothing more, her gaze settling unabashedly on Ruan Yang.
Truly without any concealment.
Her eyes lingered over Ruan Yang’s brows and lashes before finally resting on her lips, a flicker of something indecipherable gleaming in her pupils.
It felt like an eternity before Ruan Yang finally finished peeling away all the membranes. She stood up and offered the orange to Xu Zhiyi.
Xu Zhiyi stretched out her leg, her toes just brushing against Ruan Yang’s.
“Feed me, won’t you?”
She curved her crimson lips, lifting her head with a hint of moisture at the corners of her eyes.
Like a fox spirit ready to devour someone.
Ruan Yang’s hand, holding the orange, trembled slightly.
Without agreeing or refusing, she simply withdrew her hand, broke off a segment of the fruit, and brought it to Xu Zhiyi’s lips.
Xu Zhiyi ate the piece of orange.
As she swallowed, Ruan Yang’s throat moved involuntarily in response.
“Ruan Yang.” Noticing her reaction, Xu Zhiyi suddenly called out, the morning light falling on her like a natural soft glow.
“What?” Ruan Yang’s voice was inexplicably hoarse.
Xu Zhiyi chuckled softly and reached for the remaining half of the orange in Ruan Yang’s hand.
Ruan Yang’s fingertips always seemed to be cold. When they touched, Xu Zhiyi felt a sudden jolt of electricity shoot through her, spreading from her fingertips all the way through her body.
Finally settling in her heart.
Like a confident hunter, Xu Zhiyi sighed lightly with a curved lip. “Nothing.”
Be strong.
Don’t fall into my hands too quickly.
Qu Shanshan: So jealous.
