Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 12
Such thought-provoking words left Ruan Yang stunned for a full three seconds before she could react.
She lifted her gaze, only to catch Qu Lingxuan lowering her head as if about to kiss Xu Zhiyi.
Ruan Yang hurriedly averted her eyes and tiptoed away from the scene.
As she walked away, she clenched the pendant on her phone tightly.
That ambiguous scene just now was hard not to make one think of certain things.
Suddenly, memories from Ruan Yang’s first year at the Xu family resurfaced in her mind. That year, Xu Zhiyi had just decided to enter the entertainment industry, and a fan managed to bypass the heavy security to appear outside the Xu residence.
The Xu family’s servants couldn’t drive away the persistent young man, so they had no choice but to call Xu Zhiyi out.
The boy had harbored a crush on Xu Zhiyi since middle school, following her all the way to the same high school and university. He seemed bewitched, as if his entire existence revolved around Xu Zhiyi.
He shouted passionately that Xu Zhiyi was the meaning of his life, but Xu Zhiyi didn’t even bat an eye, coldly telling him to get lost.
Later, the boy slit his wrists after Xu Zhiyi rejected his love confession. Even during his emergency treatment, Xu Zhiyi didn’t bother to visit. His parents lashed out at her, calling her heartless and cruel, and even exposed her online.
Ironically, this incident gave Xu Zhiyi a small boost in fame right after her debut, though most of it was negative attention.
But Ruan Yang believed Xu Zhiyi wasn’t at fault in the first place.
If refusing someone’s love made her a sinner, then someone like Xu Zhiyi could never be an angel.
The scene of Xu Zhiyi mercilessly driving that boy away eerily overlapped with the image of Qu Lingxuan humbly pleading just moments ago.
Ruan Yang finally stopped walking, crouched down, and hugged herself.
Her Zhiyi—why did she always have the ability to drive people mad with obsession?
–
Something flickered in the corner of her vision. Xu Zhiyi turned her head to look, narrowly avoiding Qu Lingxuan’s kiss.
Truthfully, she had never intended to rekindle old flames with Qu Lingxuan here.
Qu Lingxuan stiffened, then rested her head on Xu Zhiyi’s shoulder.
If Qu Lingxuan’s fans were to witness this scene, they would be utterly shocked.
The usually composed and mature actress Qu Lingxuan now acted like a lovestruck girl, nuzzling her forehead against Xu Zhiyi’s neck as if coquettishly seeking affection.
Xu Zhiyi’s eyes remained clear, unshaken.
She was still staring at the corner where she was certain someone had been watching.
Who was it?
Xu Zhiyi frowned, placing her hands on Qu Lingxuan’s shoulders and gently pushing her away.
With a faint smile, she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her fox-like eyes glinting with mischief. “Lingxuan-jie, you know it’s impossible between us.”
Impossible.
Qu Lingxuan’s gaze lingered as she traced Xu Zhiyi’s features with her eyes.
Yes, among Xu Zhiyi’s countless lovers since her debut, eight out of ten still carried lingering feelings for her yet not a single one could make her look back.
Xu Zhiyi never looked back.
And Qu Lingxuan wouldn’t be her exception either.
Realization dawned on Qu Lingxuan, her emotions freezing like a stagnant river.
Noticing her expression, Xu Zhiyi slowly lowered her hand, her fingertips pausing over Qu Lingxuan’s heart before lightly tapping twice.
She looked up, smiling, yet with a chill so icy it made one’s heart ache. “It’s already the summer solstice, Lingxuan.”
The words were obscure, but Qu Lingxuan understood.
It was already the summer solstice. What happened last spring should no longer matter.
The corners of Qu Lingxuan’s eyes reddened as she reached out and grasped Xu Zhiyi’s fingertips, silent, wordless.
This was Xu Zhiyi even when rejecting someone, she did it with such gentleness that it was impossible to resent her.
She seemed tender toward everyone, yet ruthless to all the same.
After a long while, Qu Lingxuan finally seemed to have talked herself into acceptance and released Xu Zhiyi’s hand.
She took a step back and let out a soft laugh. “I understand, Zhiyi. I’ll move forward. If you really can’t handle this situation, don’t hesitate to come to me.”
Xu Zhiyi remained smiling, the curve of her lips just right, every angle flawlessly sculpted as if carved with precision.
She nodded. “Mm.”
With that, Xu Zhiyi excused herself, saying the director was waiting for her upstairs, and left.
Watching Xu Zhiyi’s retreating figure, Qu Lingxuan sighed without even realizing it.
Over the past year, she had often heard news of Xu Zhiyi. Xu Zhiyi had risen too quickly, as if nothing could hinder her ascent.
Qu Lingxuan had often wondered, consciously or not did Xu Zhiyi have a genuine heart at all?
What kind of person could possibly make Xu Zhiyi lower her head?
If possible, she truly wanted to see what Xu Zhiyi would look like as a loser.
Would that day ever come?
Qu Lingxuan wasn’t sure.
She glanced at her fingertips, then pulled out a mask and sunglasses, putting them on before leaving the place from another direction.
–
After leaving, Xu Zhiyi didn’t head upstairs to the director’s private room. Instead, she turned a corner and sought out the restaurant manager, asking for the location of the surveillance room.
The manager recognized Xu Zhiyi and assumed she had been secretly photographed by someone. For the restaurant’s reputation, he had to help her identify the culprit.
Without further questions, he led Xu Zhiyi to the surveillance room. Inside, she instructed the staff to pull up the footage from the hallway near the restroom.
Having lived under the scrutiny of cameras for years, Xu Zhiyi was acutely sensitive to them. The spot where she had spoken with Qu Lingxuan was deliberately chosen to avoid all surveillance, a blind spot.
The footage only showed a woman in a mask and sunglasses entering the blind spot first, followed by Xu Zhiyi.
The manager waited with Xu Zhiyi for a while until another figure appeared in the surveillance frame.
Just as the girl raised her phone to answer a call, she seemed to hear something and froze mid-motion.
On the screen, the girl searched for the source of the sound, glanced briefly in that direction, then quickly averted her gaze and hurried away.
After watching the girl’s almost panicked retreat on the screen, the manager stole a glance at Xu Zhiyi’s expressionless face.
“Miss Xu, is this… the person you’re looking for?” he asked cautiously.
As the manager’s voice grew quieter, Xu Zhiyi inexplicably curved her lips into a smile.
The silvery glow of the screen cast over her face, lending her an air of mischief and cunning that was rarely seen.
She nodded slowly. “Mm.”
Just an “Mm”?
The manager grew even more puzzled and pressed on, “Then, should we call the police for you?”
“Call the police?” Xu Zhiyi withdrew her gaze and glanced at the manager. “Why call the police? Can’t you see she didn’t do it on purpose?”
The manager wiped nonexistent sweat from his forehead. “So, what do you mean…?”
“Nothing much.” Xu Zhiyi seemed to be in a good mood.
The screen remained paused on the image of the girl walking away.
Xu Zhiyi stared at that familiar, slender figure for a long time, tilting her head slightly as her fingers lightly traced a circle on the table in front of her.
It was clear she was hatching some mischievous plan.
This version of Xu Zhiyi was far more vivid and three-dimensional than the one on the screen, her eyes practically glowing, as if she had stepped out of a painting utterly captivating.
The manager and the others in the surveillance room were spellbound.
Only after a long while did Xu Zhiyi finally look away.
“Never mind,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “I’ll handle it myself.”
After thanking them, Xu Zhiyi left the surveillance room.
Ruan Yang.
The person earlier had actually been Ruan Yang.
Xu Zhiyi’s steps toward the private room unconsciously quickened.
The room was on the second floor. When she pushed the door open, she was greeted by a table full of people.
Despite the crowd, Xu Zhiyi spotted Ruan Yang immediately. She was seated quietly beside the director, separated by one seat, listening attentively to his words. Her profile was serene, the usual sharpness in her demeanor softened.
Xu Zhiyi stared at Ruan Yang for a while, until Director Wu Jun noticed her arrival.
Wu Jun smiled and patted the seat to his right, looking at her. “Zhiyi, you’re finally here. Come, come, sit right here.”
It was customary for the lead actress to sit next to the director. Xu Zhiyi glanced at Ruan Yang, who still hadn’t looked up, and chuckled before walking over. “Of course, whatever you say.”
With that, Xu Zhiyi took her seat beside Ruan Yang.
As she sat down, she lightly touched the back of Ruan Yang’s chair, causing the latter to straighten her posture involuntarily.
Xu Zhiyi smirked almost imperceptibly.
She picked up a wine glass and poured herself a small shot of baijiu, then turned to the director. “Sorry, Director Wu. I ran into an acquaintance on the way and got delayed. Let me make it up to you.”
With that, she downed the shot in one go.
Wu Jun couldn’t even stop her. He hadn’t been upset with her in the first place, and now he was even more concerned.
People in the industry often gossiped that Xu Zhiyi was arrogant and looked down on everyone, but after working with her so many times, Wu Jun had never seen any flaws in her aside from her emotional detachment.
He genuinely admired Xu Zhiyi as a promising talent, which was why his tone carried a hint of reproach. “Look at you. It’s normal to be late, I didn’t even say anything. Why are you drinking like that? You still have to catch a flight later. No more drinking, understand?”
Then Wu Jun noticed Ruan Yang, who hadn’t spoken or looked up since Xu Zhiyi entered. Knowing Ruan Yang was a fan of Xu Zhiyi, he assumed she was too shy to speak in her idol’s presence.
He called out to her, “Xiao Ruan, take your Zhiyi-jie’s glass away. Make sure she doesn’t drink any more she has a red carpet event tomorrow night.”
Ruan Yang finally looked up.
She slipped her phone back into her pocket and turned her gaze toward Xu Zhiyi.
Xu Zhiyi happened to glance her way at the same moment.
Their eyes met, and Ruan Yang held her breath, reaching out to brush her fingers against Xu Zhiyi’s.
She lowered her head, gently taking hold of the wine glass and slowly easing it out of Xu Zhiyi’s grasp.
The hand beneath hers was slender and fair, fingertips glowing a delicate pink under the light.
There was no trace of nail polish on them.
