Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 13
For some reason, Ruan Yang suddenly felt as though the heavy weight in her heart had lightened a little.
She took the wine glass and placed it on the cabinet behind her.
It was a clear gesture she wasn’t going to let Xu Zhiyi take another sip.
The director was momentarily stunned before chuckling. “Xiao Ruan really knows how to take care of people, huh?”
Xu Zhiyi glanced at Ruan Yang, noticing that her gaze seemed to linger on her fingertips for a few seconds.
But upon closer inspection, it might have just been her imagination.
The dishes had all been served, and the director urged everyone to relax. Only then did the entire table begin eating. Ruan Yang didn’t look at Xu Zhiyi again, quietly picking out the chili peppers from the dish in front of her.
Once she finished removing the peppers, Xu Zhiyi expected Ruan Yang to push the dish toward her. Instead, Ruan Yang turned the lazy Susan, moving the plate elsewhere.
Xu Zhiyi: “…”
Today, Ruan Yang was especially distant.
Though Ruan Yang was usually aloof, today felt different. Xu Zhiyi suddenly found herself unaccustomed to it.
She wanted to say something but didn’t know what.
Even though she was the one who had been eavesdropped on, she couldn’t exactly blame Ruan Yang for it. If anything, she felt inexplicably guilty.
This feeling left Xu Zhiyi stifled in a way she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
Most of the table was occupied by the director and assistant directors, discussing matters related to the drama. Assistants like Ruan Yang had no place to interject, and Xu Zhiyi remained silent as well.
After the meal, Xu Zhiyi suddenly pressed a hand to her forehead and turned to the director. “Director, I’m feeling a bit dizzy. The aftereffects of that glass of baijiu must be kicking in. I think I’ll head back first.”
“Already drunk?” Wu Jun seemed surprised. He was about to say that this didn’t seem like her usual tolerance when he noticed the deep furrow between Xu Zhiyi’s brows.
She really did look unwell.
Afraid that something might happen to her and delay tomorrow’s red carpet, he suppressed his doubts and immediately agreed. “Alright, go ahead and rest. Be careful on your way back.”
At the mention of safety, Wu Jun quickly realized that Xu Zhiyi returning alone might not be the best idea.
He called out to her, “But Zhiyi, your assistant isn’t here, and it’s not safe for you to go back by yourself. How about I have the crew’s driver take you?”
Xu Zhiyi had been planning to bring this up herself if the director didn’t. Now that he had, she lowered her head, feigning hesitation. “That might not be appropriate. What if the driver hasn’t finished eating yet? I’ll just take a taxi back.”
The director thought for a moment, glancing around the table before his gaze settled on Ruan Yang, who had long finished eating and was sitting quietly beside Xu Zhiyi.
“Xiao Ruan,” he called out. “How about you help me escort your Zhiyi-jie back?”
“…Me?” Ruan Yang had been listening intently to their conversation. Now that the director had entrusted her with this task, she was momentarily stunned. “I should take her?”
“Director, isn’t this favoritism?” Su Xinzhi suddenly spoke up, his eyes gleaming as he looked at Xu Zhiyi.
“There are so many people at the table who’ve finished eating. Why pick Ruan Yang? If it’s about escorting Zhiyi-jie, I can do it too, I even drove here myself. Director, how about this? Let me take Zhiyi-jie back instead?”
The moment Su Xinzhi spoke, the coldness in Ruan Yang’s eyes deepened.
She couldn’t let Xu Zhiyi leave with Su Xinzhi.
So she stood up and picked up the phone from the table. Looking into Xu Zhiyi’s eyes, she asked like a stranger who had just met: “I’ll be the one to take her back. Sister Zhiyi, is that alright?”
Xu Zhiyi was still holding her forehead, surprised that her goal had been achieved so easily.
She pretended to hesitate for a couple of seconds before extending her hand and saying, “Then I’ll trouble you with it.”
Ruan Yang’s fingers brushed against the hem of her clothes. A few seconds later, she raised her hand and grasped Xu Zhiyi’s fingertips.
This was the first time Ruan Yang had held Xu Zhiyi’s hand so openly.
On the way out, Xu Zhiyi leaned lazily against Ruan Yang the entire time.
The wide brim of her hat and the mask concealed Xu Zhiyi’s face, but Ruan Yang was still terrified she might be recognized. She had to ensure Xu Zhiyi didn’t stumble while also constantly scanning their surroundings for lurking paparazzi or obsessive fans.
The distance of just two floors felt unusually exhausting for Ruan Yang.
When they finally reached the restaurant’s back door, the car Ruan Yang had called hadn’t arrived yet it would still take a few minutes.
Left with no choice, Ruan Yang helped Xu Zhiyi sit down on a nearby tree planter.
Xu Zhiyi seemed to have grown increasingly drunk since leaving the private room. Now she was completely dazed, unable even to sit up straight.
The planter held a phoenix tree. It was early summer, and under the glow of the streetlights, the lush green leaves appeared even more vibrant.
With some effort, Ruan Yang propped the person in her arms against the trunk of the phoenix tree.
Finally freeing both her arms, Ruan Yang let out a long sigh and glanced around.
The back door was quite secluded, a wide road with almost no shops nearby, just a vending machine.
She thought about going over to buy a bottle of honey water to help sober Xu Zhiyi up. But she had barely taken two steps when a warm, soft hand reached out from behind and grasped her wrist.
“The director asked you to take me home, and now you’re planning to irresponsibly abandon me here?”
