After Transmigrating Into A Novel, Not Only Did I Become An Omega, But I Also Provoked The Male Lead’s Mother - Chapter 44
“Who have you fallen for?”
Ling Jixiao’s heart ached bitterly. Her voice, slightly hoarse, was barely above a whisper as she asked Qin Yue.
She distinctly remembered that Qin Yue had no one special in her life. Could it be that in just the few days she’d been away, Qin Yue had fallen for someone else?
Qin Yue froze, her mouth opening as if a thousand words were about to spill out. But in the end, she closed her lips, realizing she had nothing to say.
Why am I even trying to explain this to Ling Jixiao?!
“Who’s ‘he’ or ‘she’?” Ling Jixiao pressed relentlessly, her tone sharp, as if determined to get to the bottom of things.
“No one,” Qin Yue retorted, her anger flaring again at the memory of how Ling Jixiao had treated her in the past. She refused to show any kindness now.
Ling Jixiao paced anxiously around Qin Yue, her mind in turmoil. “Who is it? Whoever it is, they’re clearly not treating you right!”
“Hmph, how would you know?” Qin Yue scoffed.
Ling Jixiao stopped, her gaze burning into Qin Yue. “If they truly cared about you, they would have shown up by now, at least sent a congratulatory message!”
Qin Yue scoffed at Ling Jixiao’s certainty. Stiffening her neck, she retorted, “They did send me a congratulatory message!”
Ling Jixiao stared at Qin Yue for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed. “There’s definitely no such person!” If there were, Qin Yue would have revealed their information instead of just talking without doing anything.
Hearing Ling Jixiao’s certain tone, Qin Yue’s anger flared. Without thinking, she blurted out, “I do have someone I like!”
Her declaration was so firm that it sounded like the truth.
Ling Jixiao’s expression darkened, her eyes burning with fury, hot enough to ignite the air around them.
She gritted her teeth, forcing out the words through clenched teeth, “Who is it?” She had to know who Qin Yue liked. She needed to see what qualities this person possessed to have captured Qin Yue’s heart!
Qin Yue sneered at Ling Jixiao, crossing her arms and replying casually, “Who do you think you are to ask? What right do you have to know?”
Qin Yue’s provocation pushed Ling Jixiao over the edge. Smiling coldly, she looked down at Qin Yue, her voice soft but carrying an unmistakable threat. “What do you think?”
Those three words carried a clear threat. After all, Qin Yue, an Omega, stood no chance against Ling Jixiao, an Alpha, in a fight, especially with only the two of them in the garden.
Qin Yue instinctively shrank back, then forced herself to shout defiantly, “Don’t come any closer! If you do, I swear I’ll call the police and sue you in court for what you’ve done to me!”
In this world, the Omega Protection Law existed to safeguard Omegas, a vulnerable group protected by the state. If Qin Yue were to apply for protection, the police would immediately investigate.
Besides, given everything Ling Jixiao had done to her, Qin Yue’s lack of understanding about the differences between Alphas and Omegas was the only reason she hadn’t already called the police. Any normal Omega would have done so long ago!
Ling Jixiao stared intently at Qin Yue for a long moment, until Qin Yue began to feel slightly uneasy. Suddenly, she lunged forward, bracing one hand against the back of the seat and enveloping Qin Yue within her embrace. She pressed her cheek against Qin Yue’s neck.
The sudden closeness, a faint minty scent mixed with a hint of alcohol, lingered in the air. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it was intoxicating. Ling Jixiao’s shallow breaths brushed against the delicate skin of Qin Yue’s neck, sending a shiver down her spine. Qin Yue’s back snapped straight as she felt a warm sensation brush past her ear. A heat exploded from her head, leaving her mind blank.
Ling Jixiao sniffed at Qin Yue’s neck, then swayed to her feet with a smug grin. “You don’t have my scent on you now,” she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “Even if you tried to accuse me of anything, you wouldn’t have any proof.”
As soon as the words left her lips, Qin Yue felt as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over her head, drenching and extinguishing every trace of lingering warmth.
Gasping for breath, Qin Yue glared daggers at Ling Jixiao, grinding her teeth, wishing she could bite the woman’s head off.
After several long moments of panting, Qin Yue finally took a deep breath and silently willed herself not to lose her temper. Getting worked up wouldn’t accomplish anything. She forced a thin smile onto her face as she squeezed out a strained threat through gritted teeth, “If you’ve got the guts, stay away from me forever! The moment you come near me again, you’re finished!”
Ling Jixiao froze, her alcohol-addled brain slowly processing the situation. It took her a while to realize how incredibly inappropriate her words had been. She hurried after Qin Yue, trying to explain.
Qin Yue ignored her completely, striding to the door. When Ling Jixiao followed, Qin Yue blocked the doorway, her expression cold. “Ling Jixiao, don’t ever show your face in front of me again!”
With that, she slammed the door shut without a second glance.
The shock sobered Ling Jixiao instantly. She pressed her forehead against the door, knocking frantically. “Qin Yue, Yue, I’m sorry! I didn’t think before I spoke! I didn’t mean it! Don’t be angry…”
Nearby, Grandma Yang leaned against Grandma Hai’s shoulder, sighing. “Tsk tsk tsk, young people these days. All this fighting and flirting is quite entertaining!”
Grandma Hai reached out, finding Grandma Yang’s hand and clasping it warmly. “Do you like this kind of thing too?” she asked with a smile.
“I don’t want that at all!” Grandma Yang protested, playfully tugging at Grandma Hai’s arm. “I like things just the way they are. I love being spoiled by you!”
“Fine, fine, fine,” Grandma Hai grumbled, though the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but curl upward. “You’re my wife, after all. I’ll keep spoiling you and indulging you, alright?”
Because it was getting late, Ling Jixiao reluctantly left in the end. But her dramatic entrance that night made one thing crystal clear to everyone in the sanatorium:
Ling Jixiao was pursuing Qin Yue.
Director Qin, Grandma Qin, took a pragmatic view. She believed that children should find their own happiness. If Qin Yue liked Ling Jixiao, she was certainly a decent match, though perhaps a bit older. If Qin Yue didn’t like her, Grandma Qin wouldn’t give Ling Jixiao the time of day.
With the New Year approaching, the boss of the coffee shop where Qin Yue worked was returning to his hometown and closing the shop for the holiday. This left Qin Yue with several days off.
Before closing, the shop paid Qin Yue her wages. She added up all the money she’d earned from working part-time recently and transferred it directly to Ling Jixiao, considering it a partial repayment.
After the transfer, Qin Yue felt a pang of regret. This money represented every penny she’d earned bit by bit over so many months! It felt like she’d been thrown back to square one!
Ling Jixiao must have been busy, as she hadn’t replied.
After bathing and getting into bed, Qin Yue noticed that Bai Zhi hadn’t been active at all these past few days. She wasn’t contacting anyone or speaking in the dormitory group chat. Bai Zhi used to share everything with her, her whole being radiating like a little sun, but now she was strangely silent.
Qin Yue called Bai Zhi on video. After a long pause, just as she was about to give up, thinking Bai Zhi must be busy, the call connected.
“Hey, Yueyue, what’s up?” Bai Zhi asked softly, her voice hoarse and her expression listless.
Only half of Bai Zhi’s face was visible, but it was clear she was in a terrible state. The usually proud and lively little peacock seemed to have lost her most vibrant feathers, her spirit instantly withered.
“What’s wrong? What happened?” Qin Yue noticed Bai Zhi’s unusual demeanor and quickly asked.
Bai Zhi opened her mouth, but for a moment, she didn’t know how to start.
Qin Yue looked at Bai Zhi more closely. Even through the screen, she could see the traces of Bai Zhi’s haggard appearance.
“Bai Zhi, I’m your friend. You can tell me anything, and I’ll do everything I can to help you,” Qin Yue said earnestly.
Qin Yue’s concern made a pang of sadness surge in Bai Zhi’s chest, reaching her nose. Her eyes reddened as she sniffled, the bitter taste lingering in her mouth.
“Yueyue, why… why did I fall for someone I can’t be with? It’s so ironic,” Bai Zhi choked out, her voice trembling with tears.
Qin Yue recalled Bai Zhi’s earlier bold declaration of affection for Su Yao. She wondered what had happened between them. “What do you mean by ‘someone you can’t be with’?”
Bai Zhi lowered her gaze, feeling suffocated, her throat tight. After a long pause, she spoke slowly, “She’s a Beta.”
Qin Yue didn’t immediately understand. “So what?”
Bai Zhi looked up in surprise, her eyes wide as she emphasized, “She’s a Beta!”
In Qin Yue’s previous world, there were only two genders, so to her, Alpha women and Beta women seemed essentially the same, yet upon closer inspection, there were subtle differences.
Qin Yue finally remembered that in this world, Bete and Omega couples couldn’t legally marry. After all, the state prioritized reproduction, and Omega pheromones naturally resonated with Alphas. Betas simply couldn’t soothe an Omega or Alpha during their estrus period.
“Do you still like her?” Qin Yue asked hesitantly.
A layer of sorrow clouded Bai Zhi’s eyes. She buried her face in the crook of her arm, her muffled voice hoarse. “I can’t control myself.”
So she still likes her, Qin Yue thought.
Seeing Bai Zhi’s distress, Qin Yue felt her pain as a friend.
“Then do you like her as a person, or do you like her gender?” Qin Yue asked after a moment of contemplation.
The question swept away the tangled clouds in Bai Zhi’s mind like a gust of wind, bringing a sudden clarity.
Bai Zhi lifted her head, her eyes shining brightly as she looked at Qin Yue. “Right! You’re right!”
Qin Yue was utterly bewildered.
“Yueyue, you’re right!” Bai Zhi exclaimed, instantly bursting with energy. “I like her as a person! It just happens that her gender doesn’t quite match what I expected! But I still like her!”
Qin Yue, “…”. Bai Zhi’s resilience was remarkable, rivaling that of a cockroach. At least she was back to normal now.
“Thank you, Yueyue!” Bai Zhi declared before abruptly hanging up the phone.
Qin Yue shook her head helplessly. Just as she was about to put away her phone and go to sleep, she noticed a message from Ling Jixiao asking about the transfer.
Qin Yue replied succinctly, confirming the repayment.
After a two-minute delay, Ling Jixiao responded with a simple “Okay” and accepted the funds.
Qin Yue didn’t reply further. As she drifted off to sleep, she was already mentally calculating how to continue working part-time after the New Year to pay off the debt.
The next day, Xixing Sanatorium received a donation of supplies, and the donor was listed as Ling Jixiao and Qin Yue.
Qin Yue: “……”
Ling Jixiao called, her voice brimming with excitement as she subtly sought praise. “Yue, did you see it? Our names are together!”
Qin Yue, somewhat annoyed, replied, “Ling Jixiao, you’re so childish!”
