After Transmigrating Into A Novel, Not Only Did I Become An Omega, But I Also Provoked The Male Lead’s Mother - Chapter 45
Qin Yue’s disdain didn’t dampen Ling Jixiao’s buoyant mood. It seemed that falling in love really did make people act a bit foolish.
The supplies Ling Jixiao had donated had already been purchased and delivered to the sanatorium’s entrance, leaving Director Qin no choice but to accept them.
She felt both happy and worried. She knew this was Ling Jixiao’s way of pursuing Qin Yue, but she also worried that Qin Yue didn’t reciprocate Ling Jixiao’s feelings. Accepting the donation would then become awkward.
The supplies included food, clothing, and medicine, enough to significantly improve the living standards of everyone at the sanatorium.
The residents of the sanatorium grew even more fond of Ling Jixiao.
However, Ling Jixiao was busy and couldn’t come this time. The supplies were delivered by someone she arranged to send. If she had come, she would likely have faced a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the sanatorium.
At midnight on New Year’s Eve, as the TV anchor shouted “Happy New Year!” Ling Jixiao sent Qin Yue a message. She recorded a voice message saying, “Qin Yue, Happy New Year,” and attached a generous red envelope.
Ling Jixiao wanted to call Qin Yue, but she was afraid Qin Yue wouldn’t answer or was still angry and wouldn’t want to talk.
Qin Yue listened to Ling Jixiao’s voice message. The deep, slightly husky voice made her ears tingle and her cheeks flush slightly. She didn’t open the red envelope, just replied, “Happy New Year.”
During the New Year, the Ling family was always busy. First, relatives came to pay their respects. After all, Ling Jixiao’s branch of the family managed the Minghui Group, and relatives wanted to curry favor.
Then came business associates and partners, some genuinely close, others just going through the motions of courtesy, and some trying to gain favor with the Ling family.
In short, the Ling household was constantly bustling with visitors, leaving Ling Jixiao no time to reach out to Qin Yue.
By evening, when the guests had finally stopped coming, Ling Jixiao finally had a moment to herself.
She wanted to wait until Ling Jingxi and Grandpa Ling returned to their rooms before quietly leaving, but just as she was about to change her shoes, Grandpa Ling’s voice rang out from the stairwell.
“Where are you going?” his authoritative voice demanded.
Ling Jixiao stood frozen at the door, momentarily speechless.
Grandpa Ling descended the stairs. “I heard you’ve been pursuing an Omega recently?”
Ling Jixiao wasn’t surprised that Grandpa Ling knew about her. After all, with his long career in business and numerous subordinates, finding out about such things was easy. Still, she felt uneasy, fearing he might demand she cut ties with Qin Yue.
She walked over to Grandpa Ling, brewing him a calming tea as she respectfully replied, “Yes.”
Grandpa Ling watched silently as Ling Jixiao prepared the tea. He picked up the cup, blew on it, and took a sip, savoring its refreshing, fragrant taste.
Ling Jixiao pressed her lips together, watching him without speaking, her eyes betraying her nervousness.
After slowly finishing his tea, Grandpa Ling set the cup on the tea table and stood up.
“Find an opportunity to bring her here for me to see,” he said before turning and ascending the stairs.
The words exploded in Ling Jixiao’s heart like fireworks, dazzling and brilliant. Her eyes widened as she stared in disbelief at Grandpa Ling’s retreating figure.
She had always assumed that Grandpa Ling, with his traditional mindset and emphasis on matching social status, would never approve of Qin Yue’s family background. After all, the two of them were so different.
But now, Grandpa Ling had actually asked Ling Jixiao to bring Qin Yue home to meet him. This was unmistakable approval of Qin Yue!
Ling Jixiao couldn’t help but smile widely. “Grandpa, thank you,” she called after him.
After returning to his room, Grandpa Ling sighed. He was indeed a traditional man who favored Alphas over Omegas and Betas, and believed in matching social status. A few years ago, he might have even tried to find Ling Jixiao a suitable Alpha match.
But over time, as Ling Jixiao had established herself at Minghui Group and gained independence, he had grown old and lost the power to control his daughter’s choices.
Moreover, he had watched Ling Jixiao remain single and avoid relationships due to the shadow of her father’s influence. Her body had grown resistant to an Omega’s pheromones, turning her into a work machine with nothing but career in her life. Now, Grandpa Ling began to regret forcing his son to break up with his first love and marry the Omega he had chosen for him.
If Grandpa Ling hadn’t been so forceful in separating his son from his first love, perhaps his son wouldn’t have fallen into later decadence and despair, nor would he have cast such a shadow over young Ling Jixiao’s psyche.
Now, watching his only granddaughter, Ling Jixiao, grow older, he still felt anxious. No matter how much he approved of Ling Jingxi, the boy wasn’t his direct bloodline.
Finally, after much anticipation, Ling Jixiao had found an Omega she liked. As long as the Omega came from a decent background, the old man wouldn’t object.
Ling Jixiao drove to Xixing Sanatorium. Alone in her car late at night, she stared at the sanatorium’s main gate and sent Qin Yue a message.
Qin Yue was at the sanatorium with Grandma Qin and other residents who had no families to celebrate the New Year with. They were watching TV when her phone vibrated. She didn’t notice at first, but when the commercial came on, she remembered and glanced at the message, seeing it was from Ling Jixiao.
Surprised that Ling Jixiao had come without telling her, Qin Yue looked at the howling wind outside. Her mind conjured an image of the frail girl huddled in a corner, sniffling, arms wrapped around herself, shivering. She couldn’t suppress a chuckle.
“What’s got you so happy?” Grandma Qin asked, turning to Qin Yue after hearing her laughter.
“Nothing,” Qin Yue replied, her eyes crinkling with amusement. She stood up. “I’m just going to the door.”
With that, she dashed away.
Grandma Qin wanted to ask why Qin Yue was going to the door in the middle of the night, but the girl had already disappeared. She sighed helplessly. “That child…”
Qin Yue reached the gate and struggled to catch her breath. Only after her breathing returned to normal did she open the door and step outside.
Ling Jixiao wasn’t foolish. It was bitterly cold out there, so she knew Qin Yue would be sitting in her car. She waited until Qin Yue emerged before opening her car door and getting out.
Seeing that Ling Jixiao didn’t look as pitiful as she’d imagined, Qin Yue felt a small pang of disappointment. She glared at her. “What are you doing here?”
The moment Ling Jixiao saw Qin Yue, her calm eyes lit up with a warm smile. “I haven’t even gotten to wish you a happy new year in person.”
Coincidentally, as she spoke, fireworks began exploding in the sky nearby, their vibrant bursts casting a soft glow on Ling Jixiao’s beautiful face and adding a touch of ethereal charm.
Qin Yue’s breath caught in her throat, her pupils filled with Ling Jixiao’s radiant smile.
“You’re so beautiful…” Qin Yue blurted out involuntarily.
The fireworks were too loud; Ling Jixiao saw her mouth move but couldn’t hear what she said.
“What did you say?” Ling Jixiao leaned closer, raising her voice.
Just then, the fireworks stopped. Qin Yue snapped back to her senses, mortified that she’d been momentarily bewitched by Ling Jixiao’s beauty. “I said I heard you. Do you need something else?” she snapped coldly, her voice tinged with embarrassment and resentment.
She certainly hadn’t forgiven Ling Jixiao for what she’d done!
“Yes.” Ling Jixiao pulled a red envelope from her pocket. “New Year’s money.”
Qin Yue’s face darkened. “What do you mean, acting like my elder?”
Ling Jixiao was initially bewildered by Qin Yue’s reaction. But she quickly realized her mistake: red envelopes were traditionally given by elders to younger generations to ward off evil spirits. Giving one to Qin Yue was indeed inappropriate.
“Alright, I was thoughtless,” Ling Jixiao said with a smile, rather than anger. She found Qin Yue’s puffed-up, angry expression quite adorable, like a little pufferfish. She curled her fingers, tempted to poke Qin Yue’s cheek, but managed to restrain herself. “You can still accept this New Year’s gift, though. It’s from someone your own age.”
Qin Yue watched as Ling Jixiao produced a small box from her other hand, and she instinctively stepped back in alarm.
“I don’t want it!” Qin Yue hastily refused.
Ling Jixiao understood what Qin Yue was thinking. Her previous gift-giving had been misguided; she’d asked for advice, and the people she consulted assumed she was giving a diamond necklace to another wealthy young lady. Now that she knew Qin Yue’s true preferences, she wouldn’t make such a presumptuous mistake again.
“It’s not expensive, really,” Ling Jixiao said with a faint smile, her tone shifting to one of coaxing and mild hurt. “Please, take this New Year’s gift.”
Qin Yue couldn’t stand Ling Jixiao’s pitiful tone. Whenever Ling Jixiao spoke to her in that pleading voice, Qin Yue’s heart softened, making her want to give the woman anything she wanted.
After hesitating for a long moment, Qin Yue finally accepted the gift. Seeing the stars in Ling Jixiao’s eyes, she waved impatiently. “Don’t you see what time it is? You should hurry back!”
“Oh, alright.” Ling Jixiao agreed, but she remained standing, staring at Qin Yue.
Qin Yue worried about Ling Jixiao’s safety on the road so late, but her tone remained grumpy. “Listen or don’t. Freeze to death if you want!” She went back inside.
Ling Jixiao sighed, watching Qin Yue close the door before slowly walking to her car.
Just as she opened the car door, Qin Yue shouted, “Drive safely!”
Ling Jixiao’s mood instantly lifted. She looked up and saw Qin Yue peeking out from behind the door. Her previously blank face broke into a wide grin. “I will!”
Qin Yue quickly withdrew her head and closed the door, then cooled her burning cheeks with the back of her hand before slowly walking back inside.
The gift in her pocket had been clutched tightly in her palm, warming to the point of heat, filling Qin Yue’s heart with warmth.
Returning to her room, she stared at the small box she had been holding, her impatience battling with forced restraint.
Examining the exquisitely wrapped little box, she still worried it might contain something precious.
After a moment’s hesitation, she carefully opened the lid, her heart brimming with the thrill of opening a mystery box.
Inside lay a circular braided cord, adorned with several peach-shaped ornaments. At the center hung a small plaque inscribed with the words “Peace and Happiness.”
The craftsmanship wasn’t particularly intricate, but the overall design was charming and quite appealing.
It was clearly a handmade creation by Ling Jixiao.
Though inexpensive, it overflowed with her heartfelt sentiment.
Qin Yue didn’t recognize the type of knot and specifically searched online, discovering it was called a Lover’s Knot.
The meaning behind gifting a Lover’s Knot was self-evident:
“To be bound together forever.”
“Keep dreaming,” Qin Yue muttered, yet her smile couldn’t help but widen. She bit her lower lip, trying to suppress the overwhelming joy, but ultimately burst into laughter.
She carefully hung the Lover’s Knot above her bed. Before sleeping, she couldn’t resist poking the little peaches on the knot with her fingertip.
The Lover’s Knot swayed as Qin Yue poked it. She looked at the words “Peace and Happiness” woven into the knot, her mind filled with Ling Jixiao’s radiant smile, as brilliant as spring blossoms. Softly, she murmured, “Just this once, I’ll forgive you—just a little, mind you!”
