After Transmigrating Into A Novel, Not Only Did I Become An Omega, But I Also Provoked The Male Lead’s Mother - Chapter 42
“I’m Su Yao’s mother. Where is Su Yao?” Ms. Meng asked.
Bai Zhi’s hair stood on end with fear. Her body stiffened, and she felt her blood run cold. “A-A-A-A-A-A-A-Auntie, please, please, please, please come in.”
She shuffled stiffly aside to let the woman pass.
Ms. Meng eyed her suspiciously as she stepped into the empty living room. “Su Yao hasn’t gotten off work yet?”
Bai Zhi nodded vigorously. “Y-yes, that’s right.”
Ms. Meng wondered why such a young girl would stutter. Poor thing, she thought, casting Bai Zhi a sympathetic glance.
Bai Zhi stood stiffly in the corner, her eyes fixed on the floor like a child caught in a misdeed.
Her mind was bombarded with frantic thoughts.
This is so embarrassing… Why did we have to meet the parents so suddenly? I’m such a failure! Why can’t I even speak properly? Will Auntie think badly of me? What should I do?!
Ms. Meng watched Bai Zhi standing quietly in the corner, looking like a shy mushroom, and found it somewhat amusing. “You…”
Bai Zhi finally snapped out of it. “Sorry, sorry, I…” She began stammering in her nervousness, unable to form a coherent sentence. Giving up, she hurried into the kitchen, tripping over her own feet in the process, and brought back a glass of warm water.
Ms. Meng’s heart nearly leaped out of her chest watching her stumble.
Bai Zhi wanted to cry, but no tears came. She was performing terribly!
Fortunately, Su Yao returned quickly. When she opened the door, she saw Bai Zhi clutching her apron, huddled in the corner, wallowing in self-pity, while her mother, Ms. Meng, sat on the sofa drinking water.
Anyone who didn’t know the situation might think Ms. Meng had mistreated Bai Zhi.
“Mom, what brings you here?” Su Yao asked, setting down her bag, changing her shoes, and walking in.
“I just came to check on you,” Ms. Meng replied.
When Bai Zhi saw Su Yao, her tear-filled eyes lit up as if she’d seen a savior.
“I-I’ll go make dinner,” Bai Zhi stammered, rushing flustered into the kitchen.
Ms. Meng pulled Su Yao aside and whispered, “Where did you find this nanny? She’s so young!”
Su Yao blinked in confusion. “Nanny?”
“Poor girl,” Ms. Meng sighed. “So young and stuttering. And her skills are lacking—she nearly tripped while fetching water.”
Su Yao suppressed a smile. “Stuttering?”
“Mom, she’s not a nanny,” Su Yao said, clearing her throat. “She’s… a friend.”
“A friend?” Ms. Meng looked doubtful. “Do you really have a friend this young? She looks barely twenty.” She seemed unconvinced.
Su Yao couldn’t quite explain it, so she changed the subject. “Mom, did you need something?”
In the kitchen, Bai Zhi was peeling garlic, secretly listening to the conversation outside.
“You reminded me,” Ms. Meng said hurriedly. “How did your meeting with Wen go?”
“Wen?” Su Yao had no recollection of him.
Seeing this, Ms. Meng knew that Mr. Wen, the matchmaking candidate, had fallen through again. “Mom thought he was perfect for you. You should have so much in common! What’s wrong with him?”
Only then did Su Yao remember the previous matchmaking candidate.
Bai Zhi, listening intently, snorted inwardly at the mention of a matchmaking candidate. “Everything’s wrong with him! He’s uglier than me, older than me, less sunny, less lively, and less adorable!”
Su Yao didn’t elaborate, simply stating that some people just didn’t feel right, even if their background seemed perfect.
Ms. Meng sighed, her worry resurfacing. What would happen to Su Yao if she left? Who would take care of her?
Su Yao grew numb to these concerns. At first, she tried to reassure Ms. Meng, insisting she could manage perfectly fine alone. But repeated pleas grew irritating, and she began avoiding her mother. Now, she simply let the words wash over her, hearing them in one ear and letting them out the other.
Bai Zhi squatted in the kitchen, angrily biting the edge of her apron, shouting inwardly, “I can take care of her! I’m taking great care of her! Just look at how well I’ve been taking care of her these past few days!”
After Ms. Meng finished sighing and lamenting, Su Yao excused herself to take a bath and change clothes, and walked into the bedroom.
Bai Zhi quickly stood up to start cooking.
Since all the ingredients had been prepared earlier, the dishes cooked quickly.
By the time Su Yao finished bathing and changed into comfortable clothes, Bai Zhi had finished cooking and was bringing the dishes to the table one by one.
“Auntie, try my cooking,” Bai Zhi said, smiling as she walked out of the kitchen.
Ms. Meng ate heartily, praising the food effusively, and smiled warmly at Bai Zhi. “You’re truly amazing, child. You’re… an Omega, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Bai Zhi nodded.
“Oh, I see,” Ms. Meng replied. “That’s wonderful. Your future in-laws will be blessed!”
“Really?” Bai Zhi’s eyes lit up. She stole a shy glance at Su Yao, who was sitting nearby, then lowered her head and started eating her rice.
“Of course, dear! You’re so beautiful and talented. I’m sure many people are vying to win your heart!” Ms. Meng said with a smile.
Neither Ms. Meng nor Su Yao gave it much thought. After all, the current national marriage laws only recognized Alpha-Omega and male-female Beta pairings.
Ms. Meng didn’t stay long. She had come to inquire about Su Yao’s matchmaking progress and to check if her daughter was eating properly. Learning that Bai Zhi had been cooking for the past few days, she expressed her deep gratitude.
After Ms. Meng left, Bai Zhi finally breathed a sigh of relief. She had initially feared she had ruined everything, but to her surprise, Ms. Meng had actually liked her.
The feeling was sweet, sweeter than honey, making Bai Zhi’s eyes crinkle into slits as she grinned.
“Why are you so happy?” Su Yao asked, looking at Bai Zhi curiously.
“It’s a secret,” Bai Zhi replied, bouncing her head giddily, her eyes sparkling like stars.
Seeing Bai Zhi’s radiant mood lifted Su Yao’s spirits as well. She couldn’t help but smile, her lips curving into a gentle smile. “You little silly.”
“Hehe.” Bai Zhi didn’t mind. She skipped off to take a shower, eager to wash off the cooking grease and smoke that clung to her clothes.
After their baths, the two settled on the sofa to watch TV, the screen tuned to a financial news channel.
“What time do you start work tomorrow?” Bai Zhi asked, mentally calculating when she should wake up.
Su Yao tapped on her laptop resting on the coffee table, not looking up as she replied, “It’s the weekend tomorrow, so I don’t have much work. Unless something urgent comes up, I’ll be home in the morning and head to the office in the afternoon.”
“Really?!” Bai Zhi exclaimed, her spirits lifting.
As the days passed and her departure date approached, Bai Zhi felt increasingly reluctant to leave. She feared that if she left, Su Yao would go on another blind date and, heaven forbid, find someone she liked. What would she do then?
She wanted their relationship to deepen, but she was terrified of being rejected.
What should she do?
Bai Zhi had been agonizing over this for days. She was leaving in two days, leaving her only one more day with Su Yao. Su Yao had been working all week, but thankfully, she had the morning off tomorrow, giving them one last chance to spend time together.
Returning to her guest room, Bai Zhi lay on the bed, feeling inexplicably restless. After a moment’s thought, she reached back and touched the gland at the nape of her neck. It felt slightly warm.
Her estrus period was approaching.
With this realization, Bai Zhi sat up and retrieved an Inhibitor from her luggage.
But as she held the Inhibitor, she paused, pressed her lips together, as if making a decision. Finally, she stuffed it back into her bag.
The next day, Bai Zhi woke early and prepared breakfast.
Su Yao actually woke up earlier to go jogging. She always believed that maintaining a good physique would help her perform her work better.
A secretary is different from an assistant. An assistant is a role that simply helps the CEO with work-related tasks, while a secretary is a position that not only manages the CEO’s work schedule but also handles personal matters. Sometimes, a secretary can even exercise the CEO’s authority.
As a secretary, Su Yao knew she needed to stay in good shape to handle her responsibilities smoothly.
Fortunately, her boss, Ling Jixiao, was a self-sufficient person with few demands. As a result, Su Yao, being the chief secretary, wasn’t particularly busy by industry standards.
When Su Yao returned from her morning run, she found a steaming breakfast already prepared on the table, and Bai Zhi was waiting for her with a towel, a warm smile on her face. A warm feeling spread through her.
Having often been alone, she realized for the first time how fortunate it was to have someone at home waiting for her and preparing breakfast.
No wonder so many people long for a partner.
“Thank you for your hard work,” Su Yao said with a smile, gently patting Bai Zhi on the head.
After bathing and having breakfast, Su Yao needed to attend to some matters in her study.
Bai Zhi was very well-behaved, not making a sound while Su Yao worked. This endearing quality was the primary reason Su Yao allowed her to stay permanently in the house.
Just as Su Yao was working, she suddenly heard a loud thud from the living room, like something had crashed to the floor.
“Bai Zhi? What’s wrong?” Su Yao called out.
Bai Zhi didn’t respond, but faint groans echoed from the living room.
Thinking Bai Zhi had fallen, Su Yao rushed out of the study and found her lying on the floor, flushed, eyes half-closed, panting with her mouth open.
“What’s wrong?” Su Yao asked, quickly crouching down and pulling Bai Zhi into her arms. She felt Bai Zhi’s forehead.
It was slightly warm, but not feverish.
The air was thick with the rich fragrance of camellias, a pleasant scent. After sniffing the air, Su Yao realized Bai Zhi might be entering her estrus period.
Bai Zhi, half-asleep, rubbed her cheek against Su Yao’s cool hand. She wrapped her arm around Su Yao’s neck and mumbled, “Sister,” her voice soft and sweet, carrying the fragrant scent of camellias.
Su Yao frowned slightly, holding Bai Zhi firmly on the sofa. Just as she was about to get up and fetch an inhibitor, Bai Zhi tightened her grip around her neck.
“Be good, let go for a moment. I’ll get you an inhibitor,” Su Yao coaxed gently.
Bai Zhi shook her head, her eyes reddening and watering. She clung tightly to Su Yao’s neck, pulling at the back of her shirt with such force that her fingertips turned white. “Sister, I feel so awful!”
The camellia scent coiled around Su Yao like a snake.
“Be good, let me go first. I’ll get you an inhibitor. You’ll feel better after using it!” Su Yao continued to coax, already trying to pry Bai Zhi’s hands off.
Bai Zhi burst into tears, large droplets rolling down her cheeks and disappearing into her thick, jet-black hair, leaving faint trails of wetness behind.
“I don’t want to,” she murmured, her voice soft and sweet, tinged with a whine. Combined with the rich camellia scent, any Alpha would feel a tingling in their heart, itching to pounce.
Unfortunately, Su Yao was a Beta, unaffected by pheromones, her mind clear and rational.
“Sister!” Bai Zhi fretted, clinging to Su Yao’s neck and burying her face in the crook of her neck, nuzzling and licking the pale skin desperately.
“Su Yao!” A tingling, like an electric current, surged through Su Yao’s neck and spread through her body. She gently but firmly turned Bai Zhi’s face toward her.
Bai Zhi sobbed pitifully. She had made her feelings so obvious, yet Su Yao remained unmoved.
“Sister, why? Why can’t you just mark me?” she whimpered between tears.
Su Yao sighed, holding Bai Zhi’s shoulders. “Bai Zhi, you know I’m not an Alpha. I’m a Beta. I can’t mark you.”
Bai Zhi kept shaking her head, murmuring, “No… you are… you are…”
Su Yao didn’t argue anymore, just silently watching Bai Zhi.
Bai Zhi gradually released Su Yao, unable to stop herself from curling up into a ball and burying her face in her knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
She had always known Su Yao was a Beta. But ever since she was little, her dream had been to find an Alpha who captured her heart, someone she would risk everything for. Now that she’d finally met such a person, only to discover they weren’t an Alpha but a Beta, she couldn’t accept it. For days, she’d been lying to herself, hypnotizing herself into believing Su Yao was an Alpha. But now that the truth was laid bare before her, she could no longer continue the deception.
Su Yao said nothing more. She got up and went to the guest room, where she found the Inhibitor in Bai Zhi’s bag. She returned to the living room and injected it into Bai Zhi.
The cool liquid cleared Bai Zhi’s head and dispelled the heat, but she continued to bury her face in her arms, sobbing.
She really liked Su Yao, truly, deeply.
But their genders weren’t right. Why did fate have to play such a cruel joke?
