- Chapter 76 - Flying Leaves and the Bloodbath of Dragon Shadow
By dawn, Qiu Qinβs secret letter had reached the First Prince, Jing Rui.
“Master said this letter is for the First Prince’s eyes only,” Qiu Qin stated.
Jing Rui coughed lightly and nodded. Once he was alone, he unrolled the tiny scroll. His eyes widened in shock. The Second Brother is actually connected to the Dragon Shadow Pavilion.
He realized that if the Eldest Princess wiped out the Pavilion, the Second Prince would be driven to desperation. Jing Rui immediately summoned his subordinates.
“The Martial Commandery has been emptied to deal with the Pavilion, leaving the palace under-guarded. Take my token to the city garrison and bring a thousand elite soldiers to fill the gaps,” he commanded. He also ordered them to keep a close eye on the General’s diet (to prevent poisoning) and to “invite” the Marquis and Qin Yao to his manor for a “stay.”
Jing Rui sighed. He had been steady and cautious his whole life, yet here he was, “fooling around” with his Eldest Sister. But the stakes were clear: win and become the Heir, lose and die.
“Also,” Jing Rui added, “take the command token for the thousands of troops at Mount Panlong. Order them to march to Mount Leiming immediately to protect the Eldest Princess.”
The Lone Commander
Meanwhile, Mount Leiming was rife with tension. Overnight, several people from various sects had been found deadβa common occurrence when enemies gathered in the martial world.
However, for the Dragon Shadow Pavilion, it was a catastrophe. Four of their five elders were dead. Jiang QiΒ had effectively become a “commander without an army” before the tournament even started.
“What happened?!” Jiang Qi roared, slamming the table.
“Leader, we don’t know,” a disciple stammered. “The Third Elder was resting when we heard a scream. By the time we rushed in, the killer was gone through the window.”
A physician entered. “Leader, I’ve examined the bodies. Each was killed with a single, precise blow. The killers are either top-tier assassins or legendary masters who know every vital point. And… it wasn’t just one person.”
Jiang Qiβs chest tightened with rage. He was certain it was the Eldest Princessβs doing. “Did you capture the maid I asked for?”
“Sheβs always with the Princess or guarded by imperial experts,” the men replied. “But we are following her. The moment sheβs alone, weβll strike!”
The “Fragile” Lamb
Zhong Ying, whose senses were far sharper than any normal human’s, had noticed the shadows following her long ago. To lure them out, she deliberately left the villa and walked toward a remote, deserted mountain path.
Behind her, the kidnappers whispered: “Nowβs the chance! Sheβs just a woman with no martial arts training. Look at her heavy footstepsβshe’s a total amateur!”
Zhong Ying stopped. “Come out,” she said impatiently.
Seven or eight men lunged from the brush, surrounding her with drawn swords. “Little lady, our Leader wants to invite you for a chat. Come quietly!”
“I decline,” Zhong Ying said calmly. “If I disappear, the Princess will worry.”
“Stubborn! Take her alive!”
As they charged, Zhong Ying dropped into a swift crouch. She scooped up a handful of fallen leaves. With a flick of her thumb, seven leaves flew out like razor-sharp shrapnel.
Swoosh!
Seven screams rang out. Seven men collapsed, each with a soft leaf embedded deep in their forehead, their eyes wide with disbelief.
Zhong Ying stood before the last man, the leader of the squad. She held a single leaf between her two fingers, resting it against his brow. One movement from her, and he was dead.
The wind rustled the trees. She stood there, calm and indifferent, as if she had simply swatted a few flies.
Drip. Drip.Β The assassin had literally wet his pants in terror. “Picking leaves to kill… invisible energy… You… who are you?!”
“Me?” Zhong Ying looked down. “No one. Tell me, do you want to live or die?”
“Live… I want to live!”
“Lead me to Jiang Qi, and you live.”
The “Clean-up” Begins
As the assassin collapsed in relief, Zhong Ying called out to the trees: “How long are you going to keep following me?”
Three shadows dropped from the branchesβimperial experts from the Martial Commandery. They were shaking. They had come to protect a “delicate flower” and instead witnessed a legendary “Flying Leaf” technique that belonged in myths.
“Miss Zhong… you’re incredible,” they stammered. They had thought she was a junior sister; she was clearly a god.
“Where is the Princess?” “She’s safe. We followed you because we were worried.”
“Good.” Zhong Ying looked at the corpses. “Since you’re here, strip these men. Put on their clothes. We’re going to ‘wash’ the Dragon Shadow Pavilion.”
“Wash?” The experts blinked. Then they realized: she meant a bloodbath.
“Miss Zhong, you killed them all with leaves so their clothes wouldn’t have bloodstains, didn’t you?” one girl asked in awe. There were eight of them, but only seven bodies. The girl pouted, “Miss Zhong, kill this last one too so I can have his clothes.”
The surviving assassin: “…” Are you people demons?!
“You, go back,” Zhong Ying told the girl. “Tell the Princess I’m fine, or sheβll worry.”
The girl nodded and leapt into the trees like a monkey, vanishing instantly. Zhong Ying then grabbed the surviving assassin by the collar and led her “new” squad of disguised experts toward the Dragon Shadow’s quarters.
The purge had officially begun.
