- Chapter 77 - The Falling Leaf and the Standoff at the Gate
“Leader!! The men are back! They’ve captured the maid!” a scout reported frantically.
Jiang QiΒ bolted upright. “Where is she?” “In the courtyard.”
Jiang Qi strode out to find eight men surrounding Zhong Ying, with twenty other Dragon Shadow members standing guard.
“Is this her? The Princess’s maid?” Jiang Qi asked. The member standing next to Zhong Ying bowed. “Yes, Leader. This is the one.” “Why is she still veiled? Unmask her!” Jiang Qi commanded.
The eight “captors”βactually the disguised imperial expertsβdidn’t move. They were busy waiting for their realΒ leader’s command. Zhong Ying looked up, her gaze landing on Jiang Qiβs plain, unremarkable face.
“You really want to see my face?” Zhong Ying asked. “Didn’t you kidnap me to kill the Princess?”
Jiang Qi was stunned. “How do you know that? Did the court dogs find you out during the abduction?”
Zhong Ying ignored his question. “So, you really intended to harm the Princess.” “And what if I did?” Jiang Qi laughed. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll obedientlyβugh…”
The smile froze on his face. A single tree leaf was embedded deep into the center of his forehead. Only the stem protruded. Jiang Qi collapsed backward, his vision turning red as blood flooded his eyes. He died without ever understanding what had hit him.
“Careless. Stupid. Useless,” Zhong Ying sighed. “Jing Yi must be desperate to partner with someone like you.” She turned slightly. “Kill them. The Dragon Shadow Pavilion is linked to the remnants of the previous dynasty. Leave no one alive.”
In an instant, the seven disguised experts drew hidden daggers. Blood sprayed, throats were slit, and the screams were muffled by the speed of the strike. In minutes, the courtyard was a graveyard.
The imperial experts looked at Zhong Ying. She stood in the center of the carnage like a calm observer, untouched by a single drop of blood. A chill ran down their spines.
“Don’t clean the bodies,” Zhong Ying said. “Leave them for the Sect Leader of Thunder Fist. This is a lesson for the martial world.”
The Princess’s Shield
The group returned to their own quarters. Zhu Xingtong, who had already heard the story from the girl expert, waved her over.
“Baby! Come here! Are you hurt?” She checked Zhong Yingβs arms and stomach. Finding her intact, she pouted. “Why didn’t you take me with you?” “Why would I take you to a slaughter?” Zhong Ying pinched her lips affectionately. “I’m not squeamish!” Zhu Xingtong snorted. “So you killed Jiang Qi?” “Yes. He wanted to kill you.”
“I wonder what Jing Yi promised him to make him risk everything,” Zhu Xingtong mused. “Power and fame, no doubt.” Zhong Ying stroked her hair. “The Pavilion is dealt with. Let’s return to the capital tomorrow. It’s safer in the Princess Manor.”
The Mountain Gate Confrontation
The next morning, the group attempted to leave Mount Leiming, but they found the path blocked by nearly sixty people from various sects: the Lotus Sect, the North Shadow Blade Sect, Qingfeng Sword Sect, and the hosts from Thunder Fist.
“What is the meaning of this?” the lead imperial expert, a middle-aged man, asked.
“I recognize you!” someone shouted from the crowd. “Aren’t you Li Nantian, the ‘First Sword of Jiangbei’ who disappeared ten years ago?” The Qingfeng Sword Sect members were shocked. “Uncle Nantian? We thought you died in the northern wastes!”
Li Nantianβs gaze turned cold. “Li Nantian is dead. I am a simple assassin of Longyao Pavilion now. If you know me, you know that blocking my path has no good ending.”
“We don’t care about your past!” a young swordsman yelled. “You killed dozens of people on this mountain during a sacred gathering! You aren’t leaving until you give us an explanation!”
A heavy voice interrupted. “Step back, young man. You are no match for the First Sword of Jiangbei.” An old monk, Lei Shanjiu, the Great Elder of the Thunder Fist Sect, stepped forward. “Before I challenge you, I have one question. Who is she?” He pointed to the veiled woman in the centerβZhu Xingtong.
“Someone you have no right to question!” the experts roared.
Lei Shanjiu sneered. “Li Nantian, you abandoned the way of the sword to become a dog of the court. If I’m not mistaken, this ‘maid’ is none other than the Eldest Princess of Great Rong, Jing Xia!”
The crowd erupted. The Princess? Here?
Zhu Xingtong stepped forward, her presence silencing the shouting. “Jiang Qi was a rebel of the previous dynasty seeking to subvert the peace of Great Rong. I came in secret to eradicate this pestilence for the good of the people. What is your grievance?”
“Evidence?” Lei Shanjiu huffed. “You say he was a rebel, but where is the proof?” “Are you suggesting,” Zhu Xingtong said icily, “that the Princess of this land needs to show youΒ evidence for her actions?”
“A little girl like you… Princess or not, if you have real skill, fight me!” Lei Shanjiu looked at her with disdain, sensing she had zero martial arts training.
Suddenly, a sword whistled through the air and slammed into the ground right in front of the monk’s toes.
Zhong Ying stepped out from behind the Princess. Her internal energy was so potent it created visible ripples in the air. She reached down and pulled the sword from the earth.
With her left hand behind her back and her right hand leveling the blade at the monk, she looked up coldly.
“You want to fight? Tell me… how do you wish to die?”
