- Chapter 4 - The Proud and Spoiled Blackened Junior Brother
“Hahahaha, are you still keeping up the act?” Little Qi suddenly laughed, tilting his head as he watched Yu Qiu and the others like a spectator at a joke.
Yu Qiu froze upon hearing the voice. He turned his head and, looking as if he’d suddenly come to an understanding, pointed at Little Qi. “So it was you?!”
The female disciple’s expression shifted drastically upon hearing that voice. Her smile vanished, and her face gradually turned deathly pale… Yu Shengyan looked on, confused.
Lan Tian suddenly remembered the memories he had seen earlier… Ah! Could it be…
Little Transparent NPC: [Vil… the mission is coming up… cough, if anything goes wrong, don’t blame me.]
Lan Tian widened his eyes: [Don’t you dare cause trouble.] Little Transparent NPC: [It’s not me… it’s the plot…]
Little Qi slowly picked up the black dragon jade pendant and shouted, “Come out, all of you!”
Shadows gradually emerged from the silhouettes of the trees all around them. They gathered like ghosts, quickly surrounding everyone present.
“Shadow Soldiers? Everyone, get into defensive positions!” Everyone drew their swords, eyes sharp with vigilance.
“It really is you! Master of the Dark Path!” Yu Qiu sounded furious, his fingers white-knuckled around his sword.
“What is going on?” Yu Shengyan couldn’t understand why his usually composed Second Senior Brother, Yu Qiu, was suddenly so enraged.
Yu Qiu didn’t answer. He turned directly toward the woman and said, “Yumei, there’s no point in keeping up the disguise now.”
Yumei? That was the name of Yu Shengyan’s sister. She wasn’t dead! And the Yumei I saw the Senior Brother kill before… Lan Tian pondered, the pieces of the puzzle starting to fall into place.
Hearing the name, Yu Shengyan’s face shifted as he turned to look at her. Yumei sighed, wiped her face, and reverted to her true appearance… It was Yumei. Yu Shengyan stood there, dumbfounded, as if he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Simultaneously, Little Qi checked himself, undid his two buns, and changed his clothes into a form-fitting suit.
Little Branch NPC: [Little Villain, come here quickly.]
Lan Tian, anxious and tense, scrambled to Han Nankan’s side.
Yu Qiu, who had been suppressing his seriousness to maintain the disguise, allowed his face to darken completely. It was rare to see him this angry.
“Why did you come out?” Yu Qiu asked.
Yumei hesitated. “I heard the Senior Brother was missing, and I was so worried… I had to come out.”
Upon hearing this, Yu Qiu was speechless. The moment she surfaced, everything the Senior Brother had done would be in vain. Now, they had been discovered by the Master of the Dark Path again…
Yu Shengyan stared at Yumei. Hearing her mention that the Senior Brother was missing sent a chill down his spine. He realized… his sister was alive, and he had killed [someone else]…
“What… exactly… happened?” Yu Shengyan hung his head, his throat tight, his lips parched.
Yumei looked at him, her expression pained, and slowly revealed the truth. “A few months ago, I was suddenly hunted. Not by people, but by these Shadow Soldiers. I was fortunate enough to meet the Senior Brother, who saved me. But… it didn’t last long before the soldiers returned. I puzzled over who could possibly want me dead… until I realized it was a debt from my childhood.”
“When the Shadow Soldiers returned, I gave up, but the Senior Brother didn’t. He proposed a method: faked death…”
Hearing this, Yu Shengyan finally understood. The Senior Brother hadn’t killed his sister; he had been saving her.
Yu Qiu added, “Do you have any idea how much effort the Senior Brother put in? You think faking death is easy? The Senior Brother used one of his own soul fragments to conjure a body. It was then… at his most vulnerable moment… that he went missing…”
At these words, both Yumei and Yu Qiu glared at Little Qi with fury. “I don’t know what you want with the Senior Brother, but release him!”
Lan Tian looked at the protagonist. Yu Shengyan was bowed and motionless. Vulnerable? No wonder… no wonder he was so easily killed when I hit him on the head…
Lan Tian turned to look at Little Qi. Little Qi clearly didn’t want the blame. He stared at the two of them, asked “Hm?”, and then realized what they were saying. “I sent people to hunt Yumei because she deserved to die! She tricked a girl into selling a stolen jade pendant, and the girl was beaten to death. Don’t you think you deserve to die?”
Yumei’s face turned even paler.
Little Qi continued, “But I, Little Qi, take responsibility for my actions. I have never captured your Senior Brother.”
“Then who did?” Yu Qiu didn’t believe him.
Lan Tian, sensing the situation spiraling out of control, felt a bead of sweat roll down his back.
“Actually… your Senior Brother is right here.” Little Qi turned to look at Lan Tian.
Lan Tian broke into a cold sweat. Don’t you dare make trouble…
He shouted, “Your Senior Brother? The good Senior Brother? Isn’t he right there!”
Little Transparent! Don’t sell out your teammates!
All eyes locked onto him. Lan Tian felt his skin crawl. He looked at Han Nankan for help, who blinked to show he understood.
“That’s right, he is indeed the Senior Brother,” Han Nankan declared, stepping forward.
Lan Tian: “???” I asked you to help, not add fuel to the fire!
Han Nankan patted his shoulder, signaling for him to wait and see. Lan Tian stood there, feeling like a giant panda being stared at by a crowd.
Little Qi added, “Actually, he interfered with my plans, and I was furious. So I poisoned him with something called the ‘Demon Seed.'”
Yu Qiu grew anxious. “Demon Seed? It turns the host into a bloodthirsty monster upon death! How could you be so wicked?”
Little Qi tilted his head, smiling wickedly. “True, but only after death. He wouldn’t have known if he stayed alive, but…” He gave Yu Shengyan a meaningful look.
Yu Shengyan’s body shook.
Meanwhile, Lan Tian’s brain was assaulted by a severe notification: Protagonist Hate Points are dropping rapidly.
Yu Qiu asked, “What do you mean? Who else would kill him besides you?”
“It was me!”
Everyone looked to see who had spoken. Han Nankan had stepped forward. “It was me!” he cried.
Yu Shengyan looked up in shock, staring at Han Nankan. He’s taking the blame for me…
Little Qi didn’t know why Han Nankan had jumped in, but he watched the performance quietly. Lan Tian knew Han Nankan was trying to win back the protagonist’s trust.
Lan Tian’s internal notification was screaming—his Hate Points had dropped to 100. This is a disaster; I’m failing the current mission by trying to fix the last one!
“Wait! Everyone, what are you talking about? I am not the Senior Brother you are talking about…” Lan Tian attempted his ultimate technique: total denial.
Silence descended on the field. Why does no one believe me?!
Little Qi laughed, then said coldly, “Enough talk. Yumei, it’s time for you to die!” He snapped his fingers.
The Shadow Soldiers attacked. Yu Qiu and the disciples raised their swords to defend.
Lan Tian felt a strange sensation. His figure began to shift. “Little Meng Meng, what is going on?”
Little Meng Meng replied: [My lord, this is a plot development. You are being forced to transform into your Demon form.]
Lan Tian: [Are you kidding me? Why does this happen right after I said that stupid thing? It’s like I’m slapping myself in the face!]
BOOM! A massive surge of power exploded, causing even the Shadow Soldiers to freeze. Lan Tian had transformed.
A violent, chaotic spiritual energy swirled around him, carrying a thin mist. As it dissipated, everyone stared, frozen in terror. Lan Tian’s eyes were blood-red, his teeth had elongated into fangs, and his body had grown an entire head taller.
He felt an inexplicable, stifling urge to let loose, but his mind remained clear. He knew he couldn’t act on it, so he struggled to suppress the desire, his breathing ragged and chaotic. Thunder began to rumble, and dark mist swirled above them.
“It’s a Demon King!” someone shrieked. The scene descended into chaos as the disciples fled in all directions.
Little Qi laughed. “Shadow Soldiers! Attack Yumei!”
Yu Shengyan and Yu Qiu should have protected Yumei, and Yumei should have fled for her life. But in that moment, they all stood frozen, staring directly at Lan Tian. Regret and guilt filled Yu Shengyan’s eyes; shock and pain filled Yumei’s; sadness and grief filled Yu Qiu’s.
Without interference, the Shadow Soldiers easily seized Yumei and brought her to Little Qi.
“Sister!” “Yumei!” Yu Shengyan and Yu Qiu finally snapped back to reality.
“Don’t come any closer!” Yumei screamed at them. They slowed their approach. Yumei looked toward Lan Tian, her lips trembling, tears streaming down her face. “Senior Brother! Do you remember me?”
Lan Tian turned his head, his crimson eyes appearing cold and utterly indifferent. He didn’t recognize her—and, more importantly, he was losing control of half his body.
“Little Meng Meng, what is happening now?”
“Master, this is also part of the plot. Since your Hate Points are too low, the initiative now rests with the plot. You can only regain control by increasing the Hate Points, muah.”
What?! Lan Tian realized his body was slipping further from his control.
“AH!” Lan Tian roared toward the sky, a thunderous, powerful cry.
“He really… has become a Demon King…” Yu Qiu dropped his sword, his mind filled with the memory of the Senior Brother’s smile after saving Yumei. The worst-case scenario has come to pass… the Senior Brother is truly gone. A Demon King only emerges once every millennium, and once they do, the world will burn. He must be weak right now—this is the best chance to capture him.
But Yu Qiu didn’t move. Nor did Yu Shengyan.
Han Nankan, however, moved immediately. He tilted his head with a small smirk—he was holding back laughter—as this was the perfect opportunity placed right in front of him! He charged with his sword.
“Danger!” Yu Qiu shouted, not knowing who he was more afraid for.
Little Qi noticed him. He wants to steal the mission completion? No way! He appeared beside Han Nankan and kicked him away. “While I am here… no one can touch the Demon King.”
Han Nankan rubbed his rear while launching a private chat bomb. “Little Qi? Little Transparent? Do you have to be so stingy?”
Little Transparent: [Don’t worry. Wait until I’m finished. The important thing is not to go OOC (Out of Character).]
Lan Tian watched the two of them glaring daggers at each other, realizing what they were discussing. He struggled to turn his body—he couldn’t stay here, or he’d eventually lose his mind and kill someone, even if they were just actors or NPCs.
Seeing him move, Yu Qiu and Yu Shengyan froze again. Yu Qiu, assuming Lan Tian was about to go on a killing spree, raised his sword—only to see Lan Tian turning away, apparently trying to run. Does he still have his consciousness? Is he in pain being in this form?
Yu Shengyan looked at that strong, broad back, finding it suddenly desolate and pitiful.
Lan Tian’s internal monologue: Mommy, run! I don’t want to kill!
Little Qi, seeing the veins bulging on Lan Tian’s head, thought: Sigh, this newcomer is having a hard time. He decided to wrap it up.
Thump. Little Qi threw Yumei in front of Lan Tian. “Today, I’ll let you make a choice: be killed by your benefactor, or… be killed by me.”
Lan Tian: “!”
Yumei stood up without hesitation and thrust a sword into Lan Tian’s hand. She wiped the tears from her face and said righteously, “My life belongs to the Senior Brother. If he wishes to take it, so be it. It’s just… I can’t repay your kindness…” She closed her eyes and exposed her fair neck.
The plot forced Lan Tian’s hand forward. He grabbed his sword-wielding hand with his other, struggling internally. You’re causing trouble!
Yu Shengyan’s heart was torn he didn’t know what to feel. But seeing the Senior Brother struggling to control himself… Did the Senior Brother care for her that much?
“AHHHH!” Lan Tian hugged his head and collapsed to the ground in front of everyone, screaming.
“Senior Brother…” Yumei opened her eyes to see him like this, her heart aching. She picked up the sword and held it to her own neck. “Senior Brother… you are truly a good person…”
In the next second, she lightly drew the blade across her throat, and bright red blood sprayed out…
Lan Tian stood frozen, his face splattered with blood, his eyes dazed.
“Sister?!” Yu Shengyan shrieked.
It’s here! The climax of the plot! Little Qi thought joyfully. He walked to Yumei’s side as she took her final breath and gently stroked her face. “Wasn’t this better?”
Yumei gave him a look of guilt before he, too, held a sword to his own neck and ended his life. He murmured his final line: “The three of us are finally reunited…”
Yumei closed her eyes, shedding one final tear before passing. The Shadow Soldiers vanished into thin air. The surviving disciples stood in shock, silent in mourning.
Ding-dong… Hate points increased by 100… 50… 100… Little Meng Meng’s notifications were erratic.
It’s still not enough to take back control of my body! Lan Tian thought, standing up.
“Demon King, surrender!” Han Nankan sprinted toward him. The plot forced Lan Tian to lash out with a palm strike.
Han Nankan took the hit intentionally, but it wasn’t enough. Lan Tian followed with another strike at eighty percent power, sending Han Nankan flying. This should be fatal… Han Nankan thought, while putting on a performance of shock and spewing blood.
“Little Han!” Yu Shengyan rushed to his side to cradle his head. Han Nankan twitched, his eyes losing their light, and he stopped moving.
Ding-dong, Protagonist’s Hate Points increased by 5,000.
With the points received, Lan Tian regained control. He collapsed, shaking violently, staring at his own hands.
“Quick! The Demon King is still there! Catch him!” A group of white-robed cultivators arrived evidently lured by his earlier roar.
“My lord, your final mission is to be captured by the protagonist. Remember, it must be the protagonist; being captured by others will deduct points. Good luck!”
Lan Tian remained still. Eighty-one swords struck his shoulders and abdomen controlled by Little Meng Meng to avoid vital organs.
Yu Qiu watched, his heart breaking, but he couldn’t move. He closed his eyes, his hands clenched so tightly that his nails pierced his own flesh.
