Han Nankan leaned in close again: “Seriously, if you kill me, the protagonist’s Hate Points will increase significantly. It’ll be a win-win—I get to return to the real world, and you get your mission points!”
Lan Tian waved his hands, looking down. “I cannot kill.”
Han Nankan grew irritated for a moment, but after studying Lan Tian, he decided he couldn’t force someone to do something they weren’t comfortable with. He softened his tone and calmed himself.
“Fine. You don’t have to do the killing; just focus on completing the mission. As for the rest…”
Lan Tian looked up, puzzled.
Han Nankan paused, gripping his shoulder: “You seem like a good person, so let’s be friends. I’ll take care of the killing you don’t want to do. You just need to make sure the protagonist sees you holding the knife. How’s that?”
Lan Tian hesitated. “Will that work?”
Han Nankan spread his hands. “What other choice do you have? Do you want to stay stuck here forever?”
Lan Tian pondered this. Realizing that was true, he nodded. “Alright then, Brother Han. Thank you.”
Han Nankan patted his shoulder, laughing heartily. “It’s nothing! We’re friends, after all. Right, time is running out. I need to get back to the team. You should change your face and get some new clothes. I’ll wait for you here.”
Lan Tian agreed, but as soon as he turned to leave, he came right back. “Um… where do I change?”
Han Nankan almost tripped. He pointed his fan at himself and said, “Ask Little Meng Meng to help you. You should have earned a reward from completing your initial task; use the points to pay for it.”
Lan Tian said “Oh” and called out to Little Meng Meng. She replied almost instantly: [My lord, do you have any questions for me?]
Lan Tian: [I want to change my clothes and alter my face.] Little Meng Meng: [Got it, my lord. Just a moment.]
Lan Tian stopped talking and waited. Soon, he felt the clothes he was wearing begin to flicker. He stood still to make it easier for Little Meng Meng.
However, he didn’t notice Han Nankan’s reaction. Those small eyes widened in shock, staring directly at his body.
“Ah!” Lan Tian finally realized what he was looking at. When Little Meng Meng changed the clothes, the old ones disappeared for a few seconds, leaving him completely naked.
Lan Tian hastily covered himself to protect his modesty.
“You! You knew about this, why didn’t you tell me?!” Lan Tian’s face turned crimson. He had no idea if he had been fully exposed.
Han Nankan burst out laughing, shrugging. “We’re both men. You have what I have, so what’s the big deal?”
Lan Tian: “I…” He was speechless.
“Your clothes are ready. Let’s go.” Han Nankan glanced into the distance, his voice urgent.
Lan Tian checked that everything was in order and followed him. He didn’t know, however, that Han Nankan had a plan of his own. Han Nankan was thinking: Regardless, I need to finish this mission quickly. He glanced at Lan Tian, thinking that while he promised not to make Lan Tian do the killing, it wouldn’t be a problem if he were “accidentally” killed…
After walking for a while, Lan Tian could see the academy students in the distance, divided into small groups and chatting softly.
“Little Han! Where did you go? We’re about to set off!”
Lan Tian saw Yu Shengyan, also dressed in blue robes, waving his arm toward them with a smile. Han Nankan waved his black fan and walked a few steps to join their academy team.
Only then did Lan Tian see Yu Shengyan clearly. His features were refined, his eyes shining like the moon reflecting in one’s heart. Most importantly, his round face made him look incredibly adorable.
But when he kills, he isn’t cute at all.
Lan Tian saw that the team consisted of five people: two female disciples in pink-white robes with swords at their waists, Yu Shengyan, Han Nankan, and one other person who looked inscrutable, standing with his back to them in a golden-threaded phoenix robe.
Yu Shengyan and Han Nankan shared a knowing smile and high-fived, their bond clearly very close. Lan Tian looked at Yu Shengyan’s breeze-like smile and then remembered the brutal way he had killed his sister. Sigh, how can the difference be so stark?
“Right, Shengyan, let me introduce you. This is my cousin, Little Tian. Little Tian, these are my colleagues.” After introducing Yu Shengyan and the two women, he introduced the man in the phoenix robe.
“This is our Second Senior Brother, Yu Qiu,” Han Nankan explained slowly.
So he is the Second Senior Brother. Lan Tian recalled the meaningful look Yu Qiu had exchanged with the “Senior Brother” earlier. It seemed they had important information they hadn’t shared with others.
Yu Qiu turned around. Lan Tian was stunned; his features were like an ink wash painting—gentle and elegant. But his beautiful eyebrows were slightly furrowed, and his eyes were veiled with a reddish tint, looking moist and filled with an indescribable sorrow.
Strange, I didn’t feel this when I looked at Yu Shengyan’s memories… does that mean this happens later?
Lan Tian bowed to acknowledge everyone. Yu Shengyan looked at him curiously and muttered, “Little Tian?” As he repeated the name, Lan Tian noticed his expression turning increasingly icy, until he was practically gnashing his teeth.
Ding-dong! Protagonist Hate Points increased by 500.
Oh my god, why did it increase by 500 so suddenly? He wasn’t even in his original form; just hearing a name similar to “Lan Tian” had caused the spike.
Han Nankan, noticing Lan Tian’s expression, quickly interrupted. “Shengyan, others have started moving, let’s go!”
“Then… what is he here for?” Yu Shengyan stared at Lan Tian with a cold expression.
Lan Tian felt his scalp crawl. Think about it, what am I here for? I’m here to kill…
Han Nankan jumped between them, blocking Lan Tian, and laughed at Yu Shengyan. “Shengyan, he’s my friend, no need to give him such a sour face.”
Yu Shengyan obediently reined in his emotions and offered a forced smile, but Lan Tian found it terrifying. Yu Shengyan turned to Han Nankan: “Since he’s your friend, he’s my friend too, even if I think he’s a bit weird…”
Yu Qiu also glanced at Lan Tian intentionally or unintentionally.
In the Beast Mountain, the trees were dense and gloomy, blocking out the scorching sun. The outskirts were mostly filled with low-level beasts. Soon, people were shouting about their captures and tying the beasts up to tally their scores.
However, many wanted to catch higher-level beasts for more points, and some—like Yu Qiu’s group—preferred to hunt in sparsely populated areas. They intentionally made their way to the middle of the forest. Han Nankan kept chatting with them.
Lan Tian noticed that one of the female disciples, wearing her hair in two buns, hadn’t said a word, acting like she was invisible. He paid extra attention to her, and the girl seemed to notice immediately, raising her head with sharp perception. Lan Tian quickly looked away, thinking that Han Nankan had introduced her as “Little Qi”… that’s some impressive perception.
He walked behind Han Nankan, no longer daring to look back. Suddenly, his group chat interface popped up—a new private message.
Private messaging is possible? Lan Tian opened it with curiosity.
Little Transparent NPC: [Vil…]
Huh? A message from the shy Little Transparent. What does he want to say?
Little Transparent NPC: [I’m behind you.] Lan Tian: [!]
Lan Tian was startled. He turned around; the girl with the buns was looking at him.
Lan Tian: [Y-you are that female disciple?] Little Transparent NPC: […No, I’m a man.]
As they chatted, the girl with the buns smiled at him. Lan Tian turned back around quickly.
Lan Tian: [What? You aren’t a ghost? There aren’t any men behind me.] Little Transparent NPC: [Who said wearing women’s clothes means I’m a woman…] Lan Tian: […So it really is you…]
Lan Tian felt it was absurd. Why would Little Transparent dress like that? He looks… just like a normal girl, maybe even a bit cute.
However… later, Lan Tian would regret ever thinking he was cute; he would find him downright hateful…
Lan Tian: [Why are you dressed like that?] Little Transparent NPC: [It’s my mission… besides, my friend Spicy said this disguise is highly effective…] Lan Tian: [It certainly is effective… wait, you have a mission too…] Little Transparent NPC: [Yes. The mission is about to start.]
Without waiting for Lan Tian to respond, the Little Transparent went offline. Lan Tian looked at the grayed-out interface, deep in thought.
“Hey, isn’t that a Spirit Beast ahead?” Han Nankan suddenly pointed forward. The others looked in the direction of his finger and saw a Spirit Bird. It hadn’t noticed them yet and was busy hunting a praying mantis.
Yu Qiu prepared to strike, but Yu Shengyan interrupted him, turning to Lan Tian with a melodious voice: “Brother Little Tian, don’t you long to cultivate immortality? Why don’t you try catching this bird?”
“Me?” Lan Tian stared at him, astonished. He looked at the bird; it was about as large as him.
Yu Qiu said, “Let me do it. It seems like it might be too much trouble for Brother Little Tian.”
But Lan Tian’s brain glitched. He thought of the Hate Points—if he “accidentally” let the bird escape, wouldn’t that increase his Hate Points?
“Leave it to me,” he declared. Yu Qiu and Yu Shengyan were stunned.
Yu Shengyan had only meant to tease the person he found annoying; he hadn’t expected him to actually try. Lan Tian looked at the bird on the high branch, calmed his heart, and Han Nankan gave him a knowing smile and a pat on the back. Kid, you adapt pretty quickly…
Lan Tian slowly walked to the base of the tree and whispered to Little Meng Meng: [Little Meng Meng, remember to disable the pain sensors. I’m going to pretend I failed to catch the bird and fall.]
If he failed to catch the bird, he would be criticized, but if he got injured in the process, no one would blame him and the protagonist would surely find him pathetic. It was the perfect strategy.
Lan Tian followed his plan. He climbed the tree branch and stared at the bird, looking intensely focused. Yu Shengyan watched coldly, thinking, this Little Tian really likes to show off. He walked to the base of the tree to see if he would actually catch it.
However, a minute later, the bird shrieked, and a person plummeted from the high branch…
Lan Tian… fell right onto Yu Shengyan’s head.
In the air, Lan Tian kept his eyes shut, his nerves frayed. Everyone gasped. Yu Shengyan hadn’t expected him to fall so fast and stood frozen.
Instinctively, he opened his arms, and the person in the air landed right in them. Yu Qiu, who had been about to step forward, stopped, looking at Yu Shengyan with relief. So he ran to the base of the tree because he was worried about Little Tian…
Expecting to hit the mud, Lan Tian felt something wasn’t right. He opened his eyes and found himself staring at Yu Shengyan’s furious face.
“Wow!” Lan Tian jumped out of his arms.
Yu Shengyan’s anger was rising. He glared at Lan Tian, his face dark.
Ding-dong! Hate points increased by ten.
Lan Tian was surprised. Why only ten? Oh right, my identity is ‘Little Tian,’ so the protagonist’s anger toward ‘Little Tian’ doesn’t add to the Hate Points for ‘Senior Brother.’
The bird hadn’t flown far. Yu Shengyan clicked his tongue in anger and gave chase, ignoring Lan Tian entirely.
Little Transparent NPC: [Vil… well done!]
Lan Tian felt his heart rate spike again. What? He turned to look at Little Qi and Han Nankan. Han Nankan was laughing maliciously, and Little Qi was fiddling with something a black object in his hand.
Whoosh, A piercing sound whistled through the air. Lan Tian turned toward the sound.
It was an arrow, and its target was the Spirit Bird…
Yu Shengyan was a step too late; the arrow pierced the bird, and it emitted a mournful cry.
“Ha, see how that bird runs now?” A crisp female voice came from afar.
Followed by the sound of footsteps, a team of people appeared. Was this a turf war over Spirit Beasts?
Little Transparent NPC: [Characters arrived. Mission started.] Lan Tian: [What?]
Little Transparent kept talking about the mission without context. Lan Tian was lost. He had to ask Han Nankan.
Lan Tian: [Little Branch, what did Little Transparent mean by ‘mission started’?] Little Branch NPC: [Oh, that guy… whatever he says is definitely related to you…] Little Branch NPC: [But I don’t know what kind of impact it will have; he’s a bit of a dimwit, you should watch out.]
Lan Tian had just finished reading the message when he saw Little Qi finish tinkering with his item and hook it onto his clothes.
Lan Tian looked closely it was a black, dragon-shaped jade pendant, emitting faint wisps of black energy.
No one else noticed. Yu Shengyan had already grabbed the fallen bird and walked over to Yu Qiu. At the same time, the woman approached.
“Give it back. I caught that,” the woman said with a smile as she approached Yu Shengyan.
Yu Shengyan had never encountered such an unreasonable person. Just as he was about to retort, Yu Qiu stopped him. Lan Tian stood by, noticing that Yu Qiu and the woman exchanged a pointed look for a few seconds. Oh? There’s something here!
Yu Qiu’s expression suddenly turned solemn. Yu Shengyan looked at him, dissatisfied. “Second Senior Brother, what are you doing?”
Yu Qiu turned his head, frowned, and said angrily, “Just give it to her. Seriously.”
“Why should I give it to her? We caught it first…” Yu Shengyan was still unconvinced.
Yu Qiu gave him a strange look. “What difference does it make who has it…”
What does that mean? Yu Shengyan was lost.
Lan Tian recalled the previous memory: Yu Qiu’s look at the Senior Brother hadn’t been angry, but worried…
