- Chapter 5 - The Proud and Spoiled Blackened Junior Brother
Just when everyone thought Lan Tian was spent and had no strength left to fight, he suddenly stood up. Yu Qiu and Yu Shengyan both froze.
One of the plain-robed disciples shouted, “He’s standing up! Grandmaster, the sword formation didn’t work!” The white-haired elder waved his hand, signaling the disciples not to panic.
Lan Tian stood tall, slowly lifting his head. Red veins had crawled over his irises, making him look even more ruthless and terrifying. Some of the surrounding disciples, trembling with instinctive fear, retreated in unison.
“AHHH!!!” Lan Tian let out a furious roar and charged forward recklessly in one direction. The Immortal Sect disciples, terrified by his sudden outburst, scrambled out of his way, instinctively clearing a wide path for him.
The white-haired elder stared at his incompetent disciples, then shifted his stance, perfectly blocking Lan Tian’s path. Lan Tian acted as if he didn’t see him, charging straight toward him. Others couldn’t understand his intent, but Yu Shengyan understood immediately—the direction he was charging was exactly where he was standing.
Fate is determined by life and death… and what have I done… Yu Shengyan closed his eyes, his hand trembling as he held the body of Han Nankan.
“Monster! Surrender now!” The white-haired elder’s voice boomed across the sky like thunder, causing Lan Tian’s ears to ring painfully. Lan Tian stumbled for a second, but immediately continued his stride, unyielding.
“A stubborn one who refuses a toast, only to be forced to drink a forfeit.” The white-haired elder nodded slightly. He had intentionally used sonic waves to shatter his spirit, intending to force him to retreat. A Demon King was a Demon King, but this one… Heh, he’s still just a fledgling monster. However, these monsters were most troublesome because they were nearly impossible to kill, appearing only once every millennium. Once they emerged, the world could only be saved if a fated individual was found to defeat him completely.
The elder decided his primary goal was to suppress the monster. Recalling that he happened to carry a treasure, he retrieved a round, icy jade vessel from his wide sleeve. This treasure could capture demons and freeze them in place. Though, he mused, it might be less effective on a true Demon King.
Little Meng Meng: [Warning, warning! Master must evade the elder’s treasure. You must be captured by the protagonist to complete the mission!]
No sooner had she warned him than the elder struck. A blinding white light laced with freezing cold wind swept toward Lan Tian. He had no time to dodge; one of his feet was instantly frozen in place. The cold spread rapidly up his body, and a thread of frost pierced his heart, causing him to vomit a mouthful of blood mixed with ice shards.
If Lan Tian hadn’t disabled his pain sensors, he would have felt as though he were being stabbed by a thousand needles. As it was, his expression remained perfectly calm. The elder felt a jolt of alarm had he underestimated this little monster’s strength?
Lan Tian tried to move his frozen foot, but he couldn’t control it. He looked up slowly toward the protagonist. Yu Shengyan, feeling the weight of that gaze, was stunned. Is he… is he trying to take revenge on me?
Lan Tian thought: Why isn’t the protagonist grabbing me yet? Do I have to walk over myself?
Sigh… if I have to, I have to. He wanted this to end.
Lan Tian crouched down and pulled the sword out of his shoulder, then swung it with all his might at his frozen foot. A crack appeared on the floor, and with a snap, his foot broke off, stopping the spread of the frost. He swayed, steadying himself with one hand on the ground.
Yu Qiu couldn’t bear to watch any longer, his heart aching with an unspoken plea: Senior Brother, please, don’t move anymore. I beg you.
Using his other leg to drag the severed limb, Lan Tian stumbled toward the protagonist. The white-haired elder’s face turned grim; he hadn’t expected such ruthlessness. Severing a foot to escape? He decided he had been too merciful. He raised his hand, and the color of the sky shifted as a dense, powerful sphere of spiritual energy swirled in his palm.
Yu Qiu turned pale. That was a spiritual bomb—a strike would cause the body to explode in agonizing, horrific fashion. The elder only saw that the monster wouldn’t die, so he reached for his killing blow, completely ignoring the fact that despite holding a sword, the creature hadn’t attacked him once.
Little Meng Meng: [Master, a passive skill has been triggered: Teleportation. Do you wish to use it immediately?]
Lan Tian watched the wind-sphere rushing toward him. He didn’t move to block it; his eyes remained flat.
[Use it.]
The wind-sphere vanished into Lan Tian’s body. Everyone stared, breathless, waiting for the aftermath. But in the next second, Lan Tian disappeared!
Everyone was shocked, including the Grandmaster. He had let the little monster escape… but he had struck him with enough energy that he should be incapacitated.
Yu Shengyan looked up, startled to find him teleported right beside him. But he quickly relaxed. Everything started because of me, so ending it because of me is the best choice. He set his brother’s body down and took a deep breath, facing Lan Tian.
“Senior Brother, take your revenge.”
Lan Tian didn’t move. Several seconds passed, and still, he remained motionless. Yu Shengyan, who had been crouching, could only see his shadow. He looked up, confused.
At that moment, a droplet of liquid fell onto his face. He blinked instinctively. When he saw what it was, he froze. Lan Tian was looking at him—and he was crying.
Before he could process anything, Lan Tian collapsed. His body began to disintegrate, falling apart as if it were a fragile structure of sticks.
“What a nuisance,” the white-haired elder sighed, walking over. With a wave of his hand, he cleared away the remains—not even a drop of blood was left behind.
“Wait,” Yu Shengyan shouted, his mind a blur.
“Hm?” The elder looked at him impatiently. Are the juniors these days so ill-mannered?
“Grandmaster, hand him over to us. He was the Senior Brother in our Immortal Sect…” Yu Shengyan didn’t know what had come over him, but his mind was filled with the image of his Senior Brother’s sorrowful tears. He had never seen him look like that before.
“You know he is no longer human,” the white-haired elder said coldly.
Yu Shengyan couldn’t refute it.
“Grandmaster, please give him to us. He is a very important person in our sect,” Yu Qiu added, stepping forward.
“Is that so? What sect are you from?” The elder was curious now. Who was this little monster in his previous life?
“The Yunshan Wangxian Sect.” Yu Qiu bowed respectfully.
“Wangxian Sect?” The white-haired elder pondered for a moment, then something clicked. “Is Min Yue your master?”
Yu Qiu was stunned. He knows our master? “Yes, Master Min Yue is our master.”
“So it is him… in that case, I need not worry. I can give him back to you, but… you must take him to your master personally at your sacred mountain.”
“We are grateful for your trouble, Grandmaster.” Despite his grief and his reservations about the elder, Yu Qiu bowed respectfully to show his gratitude.
What was once a group of six was now only three. Yu Qiu, Yu Shengyan, and the female disciple who had traveled with Little Qi buried their fallen comrades in the woods. The girl sobbed uncontrollably; Yu Qiu and Yu Shengyan felt a deeper, hollower pain—too profound for tears.
They erected simple headstones. Next to them, Yu Qiu placed another, empty tombstone. On it, he carved: Lan Tian. Yu Shengyan stared at the inscription, his lashes lowered, hiding the agony deep within his eyes.
Inside the white-haired elder’s dimensional space, Lan Tian’s body was restored. The mission indicator showed “Halfway Completed.”
The group chat reopened.
[Troublemakers’ Little Group]
Main Plot Boss: [Hey, have Little Branch and Little Transparent returned?] Lan Tian: [Yes…] Spicy Main Plot: [Little Transparent is back too. So, all NPCs have finished their tasks.]
Lan Tian remembered the “Spicy Main Plot” user seemed close to Little Transparent. He asked: [Who exactly is Little Transparent? He almost destroyed me.]
Spicy Main Plot: [Emmmm, he’s just a chuunibyou teenager. I’ll help you teach him a lesson when I get back.] Main Plot Boss: [How are you feeling, Little Villain? Is it getting harder?] Lan Tian: [Sigh, it’s painful. I treated Little Branch as a brother, but he treated me like that.] Main Plot Boss: [Hahaha, don’t worry about him. He had a sudden emergency in reality. But… you should be able to see him when you return.] Lan Tian: [See him… what do you mean?] Main Plot Boss: [You’ll find out later. Little Villain, are you short on Protagonist Value right now?]
Lan Tian glanced at the pathetic number on his HUD. Aside from the Hate Points he earned from killing Han Nankan, it hadn’t increased at all.
Lan Tian: [Yes… wait, are you guys planning to…] Spicy Main Plot: [Don’t rush! Whenever you want, we’ll be there waiting for you to kill us (winks).] Little Meng Meng: [Attention everyone, new tasks are here! Master, because your mission is only half complete, you now have an ‘Additional Task’ alongside the new main one.] Lan Tian: [What?] Little Meng Meng: [The additional task is very simple! You don’t need to worry. As they say, the deeper the love, the greater the hate…] Lan Tian: [Speak human language.] Little Meng Meng: [It adds a ‘Protagonist Trust’ value. Once that value is maxed, it will double your Hate Points. Isn’t that a great deal, Master?]
Trust value… isn’t that just Han Nankan’s Protagonist Value?
Lan Tian pondered for a while and asked Little Meng Meng: [So, what is the main task?]
