- Chapter 9 - The Wife’s Flower Gift Was Rejected!
Overall, Cheng Jianian was quite satisfied with this Labor Day gift. The only thing she disliked was the cat bed. Shen Yunmiao seemed to have noticed that she preferred sleeping on the bed but attributed it to the cat bed being inadequate, unaware that the real reason was that her “cat” wasn’t actually a cat.
Shen Yunmiao was a decisive person. If the water fountain wasn’t good, she’d replace it with a new one. If the cat bed wasn’t good, of course, she’d get a new one too.
So, in addition to the beautiful tracker, Little Cheng also received a silver-gray cat bed. It looked lovely and cozy.
But Little Cheng was a human, not a cat. Sleeping in a cat bed felt no different from sleeping on the floor to her. She immediately waved her paw disdainfully to express her refusal.
“You don’t like this one either, sweetie?” Shen Yunmiao sighed, pulling her willful little cat into her arms. “Cats can’t be this picky.”
“Meow!”
Then you sleep on the floor.
Little Cheng remained unmoved by the beauty’s disappointment. She lifted her paw and gently pushed Shen Yunmiao’s face away, making it clear that she was resolute in her decision.
“No, sweetie. If you sleep next to me, I might pull the blanket away, and you’ll catch a cold,” Shen Yunmiao said, her ears tinged with red.
The mention of this made Cheng Jianian angry. Who would have thought that Shen Yunmiao, such a gentle and delicate female lead, would not only toss and turn in her sleep but also hog the blanket?
It was no surprise that someone like Ji Hanfeng, a self-centered rich second generation, couldn’t tolerate it. Only someone like Cheng Jianian, who could adapt on the fly, could keep up with Shen Yunmiao’s restless sleeping habits.
But even after putting up with so much, Shen Yunmiao still wanted to encroach on her sleeping space!
At the thought, the fluffy ball of fur indignantly nibbled on Shen Yunmiao’s fingertip. Though she usually had sharp little teeth, this time she only left a damp mark after gnawing playfully.
Shen Yunmiao’s heart softened instantly, but remembering the kitten’s adorable sneeze that morning, she forced herself to stay firm. She patted the kitten’s head and said seriously, “Anyway, sweetie, you have to listen to me. You can only sleep in the cat bed. If you insist on coming onto the bed, I’ll lock the door tonight. But if you stay off the bed, you can sleep in the same room with me.”
Just listen to that, is this something a cat can understand?
Get off the bed and get kicked out, or stay off the bed and remain in the room?
Little Cheng was furious. She meowed and grumbled for a while but ultimately chose to stay in the room.
Shen Yunmiao rubbed her head contentedly. “That’s a good girl. Sister wants to sleep with you too, but your safety is more important.”
“Meow.”
Hmph, nonsense.
Little Cheng already had a plan in mind. As night fell and the lights in countless homes went out, after hearing Shen Yunmiao’s steady breathing, a small white cat quietly climbed onto the bed.
She had already mastered the art of climbing like a cat and moved with practiced ease. Once she found the familiar, snow-like scent cool yet gentle she closed her eyes contentedly.
You won’t let the cat on the bed? Then the cat will just have to sneak on without you knowing~
Bad sister!
Even in her dreams, the little cat was still grumbling, unaware that a warm, perfectly sized blanket had been gently draped over her, one that wouldn’t be pulled away.
Shen Yunmiao had spent several days of her short holiday filming, leaving her exhausted and sore. On top of that, she had to be extra cautious around her colleagues.
Yuan Duan was right, it’s always wise to be wary of others.
Throughout her life, Shen Yunmiao had encountered disappointingly few good people, which had honed her vigilance to a razor’s edge.
Thinking back to those messy incidents from her middle school days inevitably brought that person to mind.
She was ill. Perhaps she should go see her.
But based on past experience, Shen Yunmiao knew the chances of actually meeting her were slim. Having been turned away so many times, she had grown accustomed to closed doors.
After gathering her things, she stopped by the flower shop to pick up the bouquet of pink tulips she had ordered in advance. A delicate floral scent wafted toward her.
Placing the flowers in the basket of a shared bicycle, she rode along the familiar route without much trouble. However, the filming location was so remote that it was nearly nine o’clock by the time she arrived.
The hospital looked just as she remembered a small, low-rise Western-style building that resembled a private villa more than a medical facility. From a distance, she could see layers of colorful flowers in the courtyard, glowing beautifully under the streetlights.
Glancing at the resilient bouquet that had endured the bumpy ride, Shen Yunmiao felt a faint, almost imperceptible embarrassment. Well, at least this was the best she could offer right now.
She parked the bicycle, picked up the flowers, and headed toward the entrance. The place was secluded, more like a sanatorium, with strict security. A guard stopped her, and after explaining whom she had come to visit, she was reluctantly allowed in.
Sometimes, appearances mattered a great deal.
Shen Yunmiao’s face didn’t look like that of a liar her demeanor was as cool and pure as snow. Most telling were her hands, which clearly belonged to someone accustomed to luxury. The guard, unwilling to offend someone of such obvious status, hesitated only briefly before letting her pass.
Little did he know, the patient she had come to see probably no longer remembered what she looked like.
Shen Yunmiao sighed softly. She had been here once before and knew the subsequent checkpoints wouldn’t be so easy to bypass.
Sure enough, she was stopped again at the building entrance.
Without a visitor’s pass and being an unfamiliar face, the nurse naturally grew suspicious. Shen Yunmiao had anticipated this and didn’t press the issue. Instead, she said gently, “I heard Miss Cheng Jianian is unwell. I’m a friend of hers. I understand she needs rest, and it’s perfectly fine if I don’t go in. I just hope you could pass these flowers along to her. Even if they don’t reach her room, it would mean a lot for her to know someone cares and wishes her a speedy recovery.”
Seeing the young nurse still hesitating, Shen Yunmiao quickly added, “These are tulips they’re perfectly harmless.”
She delicately plucked a pink petal, brought it to her lips, and with a slight curl of her tongue, let it slip into her mouth.
The nurse, who had never witnessed such a scene, blushed and stammered, “Alright, I’ll take them up for you. But please don’t come again. Our rules don’t allow it.”
“Of course, thank you for the reminder. I apologize for the inconvenience and won’t trouble you again. I’m truly grateful for your help.” With the nurse’s agreement, Shen Yunmiao’s eyes lit up like moonlight shimmering on a clear stream.
Just as the nurse was about to take the flowers, a voice suddenly interjected, “Wait.”
A young woman with sharp eyes and a stern expression stepped forward, blocking the way. She looked displeased. “Do you even know who this is before agreeing to deliver her things? What if something goes wrong? Let me tell you, if anything happens to Director Cheng, all of us combined wouldn’t be able to make up for it.”
Although Shen Yunmiao didn’t recognize her, she could guess her identity, she was most likely someone close to Cheng Jianian, and probably a trusted aide.
Her smile was strained as she hugged the bouquet back to herself. “Sorry, I overstepped. I’m Cheng Jianian’s high school classmate. I meant no harm, I’m just really worried about her.”
“Thank you for your concern. I’ll pass it along to Ms. Cheng once she recovers,” Zuo Ying replied coldly.
Lies.
If she really intended to pass it along, why didn’t she even ask for Shen Yunmiao’s name?
Shen Yunmiao didn’t press further. She gave a slight bow and said, “Sorry for disturbing you. Goodbye.”
She left the way she came only now, the hope she had carried in was replaced by a lingering loneliness.
A young nurse couldn’t help saying, “Ms. Zuo, I think just now.”
“Alright, I know you mean well, but there are too many bad people in this world. We can’t judge by appearances alone, can we?”
Zuo Ying was also somewhat helpless. Her boss had been lying unconscious after the car accident, and the cause still hadn’t been determined. Who could afford to let their guard down?
She had to admit, the girl just now looked like a good person but then again, her boss herself looked like an unapproachable jerk. Judging by appearances was never a good idea.
Cheng Jianian was nearly asleep when she finally heard a soft click the door opening.
Whoever it was had clearly tried to tread lightly, but as a cat now, she was no longer the kind of fool who could be easily fooled.
Angrily, she trotted over and let out a series of indignant meows, scolding Shen Yunmiao.
It’s so late, it’s not safe out there! Does this female lead, with her tragic-prone constitution, have any self-awareness at all?!
Hearing the familiar meows, Shen Yunmiao’s weary spirits eased. She reached out to turn on the light and saw the familiar fluffy white cat loaf.
Cheng Jianian also noticed the bouquet of tulips in her hand pink ones, still fragrant and vibrant despite the night’s turmoil. Annoyingly lovely.
The young CEO hopped onto the table with an air of disdain, circling the tulips once. Hmph, not bad. Just average, really.
But wait weren’t pink tulips supposed to be given to a lover? She distinctly remembered their flower language: eternal love.
Immediately, her pink-and-white ears perked up. The young CEO went into high alert, circling the bouquet again and again, trying to sniff out who had sent them.
Having changed into clean clothes, Shen Yunmiao watched her antics, her heart softening. She picked up her little cat, her tone a mix of sigh and complaint, “Does my sweetie also think these flowers are pretty? But why are some people, so hateful?”
Her voice trembled slightly toward the end, but the moment passed quickly, and she returned to normal.
Some people?
Who wouldn’t like these flowers??
Could it be that these weren’t given to Shen Yunmiao, but were instead rejected by someone Shen Yunmiao gave them to?!
Cheng Jianian was utterly baffled. She couldn’t figure out who it could be. First, she ruled out Ji Hanfeng that good-for-nothing would probably get rejected if he sent Shen Yunmiao flowers, let alone be the one rejecting her.
So who could it be? Who would dare refuse Shen Yunmiao’s flowers?
Jian Shen? Or that gentle, jade-like second male lead from the novel, Xu Baiyang?
No, no Xu Baiyang hadn’t even met Shen Yunmiao at this point in the story!
As she pondered, Shen Yunmiao absentmindedly stroked her. The cat in her arms was soft and soothing to touch, yet her eyes remained vacant and distant.
Under the light, her moist, dark pupils seemed to ripple faintly, like ink spreading in water.
Young Master Cheng sensed her sadness. Though he didn’t understand the reason, he still made an effort to lift his head and nuzzle against her.
“Meow!”
Don’t be sad. If they don’t like it, they’re blind. I like it, I really do. Next time, just give it to me directly.
His enthusiastic efforts finally caught Shen Yunmiao’s attention. She pulled the kitten into her arms and whispered softly, “I’m fine.”
“Thank you, my dear.”
“If it weren’t for you, these flowers would have gone to waste like before. Luckily, I have you now. From now on, I won’t give flowers to her anymore. I’ll only buy flowers for you, okay?”
“Meow!”
That’s more like it!
The two human and cat snuggled closely together, and even the dim, yellowish light seemed to grow warmer.
