- Chapter 10 - My Wife Smells So Good, Mmm!
After the tender moment passed, Shen Yunmiao went to wash up, seemingly preparing for bed.
Thinking about what she had done during the day, Little CEO Cheng immediately felt guilty. Meow, what if I say the cat bed started it first? she wondered. Normally, it wouldn’t matter, but now, she really didn’t dare let the already distressed Shen Yunmiao see the mess in the bedroom.
Although, after spending these days together, she had discovered that Shen Yunmiao truly embodied the gentle, delicate image of a female lead, even someone as gentle as her would surely get angry after going through something like this.
Click. The bathroom light turned off. Shen Yunmiao, wrapped in a mist of steam, closed the door behind her, her damp scent reminiscent of melting snow.
Tilting her head as she dried her hair, she stepped out of the bathroom to find a dignified-looking cat with heterochromatic eyes sitting primly in front of her bedroom door. Seeing her emerge, the cat tilted its head as well.
Shen Yunmiao smiled gently. “Good girl, are you waiting for me to sleep together?”
“Meow!”
Well, you could interpret it that way. Little CEO Cheng’s tail tensed, her desire to guard the bedroom door growing even stronger.
After some careful consideration, she suddenly realized that if she could just keep Shen Yunmiao occupied a little longer tonight, making her so tired she’d collapse into bed and fall asleep immediately, she could avoid the pre-sleep anger altogether.
By tomorrow, after a night’s rest, Shen Yunmiao would likely be in a better mood and wouldn’t get too upset upon seeing the mess.
I’m so clever to come up with such a great solution, she thought.
Little CEO Cheng used all four paws to pounce onto Shen Yunmiao’s slippers, letting out a few sweet, cooing “meows” and batting her eyes pitifully. She refused to believe Shen Yunmiao could resist petting her.
As expected, Shen Yunmiao was instantly captivated, scooping up her little cat with both hands and nuzzling her head against it.
“Good girl, why are you so clingy today?”
Cheng Nianxin guiltily turned her face away, only lifting a paw to brush against Shen Yunmiao’s shoulder.
“Alright, it’s late now. Let’s go to sleep, okay?”
“Meow!!!”
No, no! How can you resist petting such an adorable cat?!
Little CEO Cheng felt a wave of despair and slowly closed her eyes. Shen Yunmiao had already stepped across the bedroom threshold with the cat in her arms. The next moment, however, the expected light didn’t turn on.
When the little white cat opened her eyes again, she found herself already curled up at the foot of the bed.
“Meow?”
Using her excellent night vision, Little CEO Cheng saw Shen Yunmiao crouching on the floor, tidying up the mess she had made.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice remained as gentle as ever. “Good girl, were you afraid I’d be angry? I’ll never be mad at you. From now on, you can sleep on the bed with me.”
Damn. Little CEO Cheng’s face flushed uncontrollably.
She’s just too gentle. How can Shen Yunmiao be this good?
Cheng Nianxin had no memory of when Shen Yunmiao finished cleaning and got into bed. She only recalled that, in her half-asleep state, someone enveloped in a clean, damp scent gently tucked a little blanket over her, one that belonged to her alone.
Long after she was no longer a cat, Little CEO Cheng remained helplessly captivated by that crisp, fresh scent of melting snow.
The atmosphere on set today was extremely tense. Jian Shen had been in a rage all day, and even Yuan Duan didn’t dare to try and calm him down.
Shen Yunmiao wasn’t particularly concerned about whether Jian Shen was angry or not. However, it was the weekend, and if her scenes weren’t finished today, she’d have to wait until next week to film them. This could potentially delay the schedule, and any delay would affect her final payment.
Shen Yunmiao cared about the money, she was counting on it to buy snacks for her cat at home.
Unsure of what had happened, she approached Yuan Duan to ask. Before she could even speak, Yuan Duan met her damp, doe-like eyes and volunteered:
“Today’s issue has nothing to do with us. It’s mainly because those executives pissed off Director Jian.”
Shen Yunmiao blinked, silently hoping it wasn’t another problem related to her character. She was still waiting for that final payment to buy canned food for her picky little cat, who hardly ever touched dry kibble. Ah, such a fussy eater.
Yuan Duan continued, “A couple of days ago, Mercury Entertainment suddenly pressured us to add more scenes for Qiao Jingshu. Isn’t that just ridiculous? She’s already the lead actress in this film adding more scenes would make it all about her!”
“But Director Jian had to compromise for the sake of the investment. He stayed up all night with the screenwriter to revise the script. Just when we started filming again, Qiao Jingshu claimed she’s afraid of cats and insisted on deleting one of the revised scenes.”
“Afraid, my foot! She never had a problem posing as a cat lover on Flow. What a troublemaker.”
Compared to Qiao Jingshu and her peers, Yuan Duan was somewhat of an outsider straightforward in personality and often criticized early in her career. But her exceptional talent and acting skills allowed her to stand out among Mercury’s artists. Eventually, Mercury recognized her value and invested in her studio, leading to a reconciliation.
However, due to her past experiences, Yuan Duan had little patience for “proper” Mercury artists like Qiao Jingshu.
As soon as Shen Yunmiao heard this, she knew she was at the center of the issue again. A wave of exhaustion washed over her.
She never wanted to cause so much trouble, all she desired was to live her life peacefully. Why did the world always have to be so complicated?
Shen Yunmiao had long accepted that she wasn’t a lucky person. What she wanted always seemed just out of reach, no matter how hard she tried.
It had always been this way.
Noticing her low spirits, Yuan Duan patted her shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t worry. Qiao Jingshu may be an award-winning actress, but how much trouble can she really cause? You’ll soon realize there are far more difficult people out there.”
Shen Yunmiao forced a smile. “It’s not that. I was just thinking if I’ve caused more trouble for Director Jian.”
“Hey, don’t say that.”
“Yuan Duan, come here!” Jian Shen called out to her, his tone clearly displeased.
Yuan Duan shrugged at Shen Yunmiao and went over.
Jian Shen’s voice was loud enough for Shen Yunmiao to hear clearly from a distance: “Don’t you have a cat with heterochromia? Bring it to the set tomorrow for filming.”
Yuan Duan was speechless. “What difference does it make whose cat it is? Isn’t the main issue the cat itself?”
Jian Shen rubbed his temples wearily. “I discussed it with Mercury and reassigned that scene to you. That way, we won’t have to change too much.”
Yuan Duan stared in disbelief. “They agreed?”
“Of course they did! I already revised the script and filmed two-thirds of it, and now they’re causing trouble? They can either film it or get out, they have no say in this!”
Seeing his determination, Yuan Duan sighed helplessly. “It’s not that I don’t want to help, but my cat is completely black.”
The script called for a white cat with heterochromia.
Jian Shen had finally managed to find a few suitable cats, but Qiao Jingshu kept making sudden noises around them, leaving only two that weren’t stressed and even those, the owners didn’t dare let them be used anymore.
The little white cat was chasing the surveillance camera again, biting at it, its fluffy paw swatting down fiercely. It seemed the cat had gained experience from chasing the camera.
Unfortunately, failing to win in one move made it harder to try again.
After licking its paw, Little Cheng Zong decided to take a break before making another attempt. After all, she wasn’t a real cat, she knew exactly what this thing was for. She also knew that through it, Shen Yunmiao could talk to her.
But Shen Yunmiao had never once spoken.
She must have seen when the cat bit the bed, and when it knocked over the water cup there was a camera on the ceiling, so she clearly saw everything. Why did she always act so indifferent?
She had even seen the promotional video for this camera, where the owner could talk to their cat through it. But Shen Yunmiao had never said a single word to her. For two months now, she had been the only cat at home, lonely all day.
It was as if Shen Yunmiao didn’t care at all about what she did just keeping some insignificant creature at home so she could see a cat when she returned, nothing more.
Little Cheng Zong stared at the small, spherical camera, growing more and more resentful the longer she thought about it. Suddenly, she bared her teeth and grinned at the poor camera, anyone could tell the kitten was up to no good.
She rummaged through cabinets and drawers, wreaking havoc tissue paper, notebooks, vases nothing escaped her claws.
Of course, Little Cheng Zong was selective. She mainly targeted cheaper items and things that weren’t urgently needed.
After finishing her rampage, she proudly waved at the camera: “Meow~”
She was really curious how Shen Yunmiao would react.
“Good girl.”
Suddenly, a suppressed, emotionless yet gentle voice reached the cat’s ears.
The pair of pink-and-white ears, which had been perked up proudly, trembled uncontrollably.
“Meow~”
What do you want? Finally feeling sorry for your things?
Cheng Nianman lazily sauntered over to the camera, trying to catch a glimpse of the familiar figure from that dark, round head.
But there was nothing. She couldn’t see anything, and a wave of inexplicable disappointment washed over her.
All she heard was a sigh: “Be good at home, okay? Big sister will be back soon.”
“Meow?” The little white cat blinked, hoping for another response, but none came.
How annoying.
Shen Yunmiao hung up the surveillance feed and apologized, “Director Jian, as you can see, my little cat is very unruly. She really can’t handle filming.”
Ever since Jian Shen found out that Shen Yunmiao’s little white cat perfectly matched her requirements, her eyes had lit up like a hungry wolf spotting prey. She kept circling Shen Yunmiao, dropping hints and probing.
Of course, Shen Yunmiao didn’t want her little cat to be in the spotlight just to earn money. What if that Qiao Jingshu pulled another stunt and scared the cat?
Even if Yuan Duan were filming that scene now, she still wouldn’t feel at ease.
She had to decline politely, but Jian Shen was as persistent as a sticky plaster, even promising that the cat wouldn’t be frightened and offering a generous reward.
Left with no choice, Shen Yunmiao resorted to this last resort. She watched the surveillance footage every day and knew exactly what her little cat had been up to. She decided to let Jian Shen see the cat’s mischievous side and drop the idea.
As luck would have it, the little cat happened to be venting its frustration fiercely at home.
This way, surely they wouldn’t still want the kitten to act, right?
Unexpectedly, Jian Shen’s eyes lit up: “Yunmiao, this cat of yours is truly exceptional! It has such a strong screen presence and even knows how to find the camera. What an intelligent, clever, and adorable little kitten!”
Shen Yunmiao: “…”
She replied helplessly, “Director Jian, I’m worried my kitten might get frightened. She’s never encountered anything like this before.”
Jian Shen immediately began pleading desperately: “Yunmiao, think about it have I ever asked you for anything before? Haven’t I done everything you’ve ever wanted? Just help me out this once, please? I’ll owe you a favor, and I promise I’ll repay you someday!”
This mix of emotional manipulation and temptation made Shen Yunmiao deeply uncomfortable. It was true that Jian Shen had once recognized her talent and given her opportunities, but she didn’t want her kitten to repay this so-called “debt.”
However, one can’t fight city hall.
Refusal was useless Shen Yunmiao had learned long ago that her past rejections had only invited further encroachment and harm.
So she simply remained silent, using her silence as a form of refusal. Yet Jian Shen and the others interpreted it as tacit consent.
The cheers and expressions of gratitude nearby felt piercingly sharp to her ears, eerily reminiscent of distant memories from her school days.
It made her feel as though she had returned to that cold, damp, sunless winter.
Unable to do anything, unable to say anything, in the thin air, she felt as if she were drowning in the depths of the sea, completely powerless.
