- Chapter 8 - My Wife Gave Me Another Kiss
The epicenter was still far away. After a series of safety assessments and monitoring, everyone returned to their homes.
However, the atmosphere remained tense, as if every bush and tree were an enemy. Over time, Little Cheng was utterly exhausted, her round cat eyes often staring blankly.
When she was human, she had far more energy, often sleeping only five or six hours a day without feeling tired, ready to start working the moment she opened her eyes.
But now, as if the world resented this vicious female supporting character for being too energetic, Cheng Jianian felt she could sleep twenty hours a day.
She missed her original body more and more. How could she ever return?
The pure white cat sat upright in front of the surveillance camera, lost in thought.
After the previous water cup incident, Shen Yunmiao had installed this smart surveillance camera at home, a round ball that could rotate 360 degrees and even follow the cat around.
Perhaps her personality was being influenced by her feline body, because Little Cheng felt an inexplicable itch in her heart when she saw that round ball.
She really wanted to swipe at it with her paw.
Realizing what she was thinking, the kitten hurriedly avoided the camera.
Unexpectedly, the camera seemed to have eyes, immediately following Mimi’s steps closely.
Well, she couldn’t be blamed for this, could she?
On the surveillance screen, the little white cat, without a single stray hair, sat primly upright, her two paws tucked under her tail, looking noble and elegant.
In the next moment, a fluffed-up paw came flying toward the camera.
Even through the screen, one could almost hear the camera’s mournful cry poor thing, having suffered such a disaster so soon after leaving the factory.
“Wow, what an adorable cat! Is it yours, Yunmiao?” Yuan Duan exclaimed in surprise.
Shen Yunmiao, who had been engrossed in the cat’s charm, was pulled back to reality. She casually put away her phone and nodded slightly. “Yes, she’s my little cat.”
“She looks even more temperamental than mine, hahahahaha! My little rascal also loves scratching the camera.”
Yuan Duan was the female lead in this movie. She had risen to fame through Jian Shen’s films and, before turning thirty, had already become an international film queen. Her willingness to play the female lead this time was due to her personal friendship with Jian Shen.
On set, Shen Yunmiao hardly knew anyone. By nature, she wasn’t one to draw attention to herself, so during breaks, she would often sit quietly by herself in the distance.
Only Yuan Duan, who had also started as an ordinary person and shared similar experiences with Shen Yunmiao, would intentionally come over to chat with her.
Shen Yunmiao considered her a friend, so their conversations were more relaxed. She smiled and said, “Not at all. My little cat is usually very well-behaved. She only scratched the camera today because she was bored.”
“Oh my,” Yuan Duan teased, her phoenix eyes narrowing into slits. “So protective, are we?”
“Alright, let’s get to the point,” Yuan Duan leaned in and lowered her voice. “I’ve noticed lately that our female lead here has quite a grudge against you. You should be careful.”
Jian Shen’s movie was titled Words Unspoken, a rare historical epic centered on a female protagonist. The film follows the tumultuous life of the female lead, Yu Buyan.
Yu Buyan was originally a princess of the Liang Kingdom but, due to an autumn hunt, found herself stranded in the Song Kingdom. By a twist of fate, she followed the Song Kingdom’s princess to the Ying Kingdom, where the two supported each other in the depths of the palace, eventually helping the princess’s son ascend to the throne.
The young monarch, whom she had personally nurtured, hesitated to marry Yu Buyan due to concerns about age and societal opinions.
Heartbroken, Yu Buyan volunteered to marry into the Qu Kingdom as a spy. Through mutual testing and interactions with the king of Qu, she regained power and affection, ultimately uncovering her true identity, unifying the chaotic era, and becoming the most powerful figure of the new dynasty.
The script, adapted from history and refined by Jian Shen, became compact, thrilling, and deeply moving. Written from a female perspective, it poignantly portrays the sorrows of women under feudal dynasties.
Shen Yunmiao played the role of the Song Kingdom’s princess, a gentle beauty as radiant as the bright moon and as serene as a clear spring. After her initial marriage to the Ying Kingdom, she was neglected by the king and spent her nights alone, playing the zither.
However, after enduring various hardships in the harem, she chose to compete for favor and, with Yu Buyan’s assistance, became a queen mother remembered in history.
The female lead was portrayed by the rising young actress Qiao Jingshu, who had recently won the Best Actress award.
Shen Yunmiao had barely exchanged a word with her, so she was completely baffled by Yuan Duan’s remarks.
Seeing her dazed expression, Yuan Duan sighed helplessly, “It’s normal you don’t know. The actor playing your character’s love interest also auditioned but didn’t get the part.”
At this, Shen Yunmiao nearly choked on her saliva. Wha—what? Love interest? But wasn’t her character female?
Yuan Duan, straightforward by nature and having grown close to Shen Yunmiao over the past few days, decided to be direct. “Since you’re not in the industry, it’s understandable you wouldn’t know. Qiao Jingshu’s young girlfriend just graduated from acting school. Qiao originally wanted her to play your role so they could promote their on-screen chemistry and launch her girlfriend into the entertainment industry.”
“I saw the girl during her audition. Her acting wasn’t bad, but her image was too cute not as fitting for the role as you. So she was cut.”
Shen Yunmiao had no idea that being randomly pulled off the street to audition would end up blocking someone else’s path. Awkwardly, she asked, “Sister Yuan, do many people know about this?”
“There are no secrets in this industry,” Yuan Duan waved her hand dismissively. “You’re just the one left in the dark, clueless.”
Shen Yunmiao felt slightly relieved. At least she hadn’t stumbled upon some major secret. She’d heard that knowing too much in the entertainment industry could lead to a miserable end.
She still wanted to live a few more years.
Seeing her lack of concern, Yuan Duan grew anxious. “Don’t take this lightly. Let me tell you, Qiao Jingshu’s background isn’t as simple as you might think.”
Shen Yunmiao hugged her knees and blinked at Yuan Duan, her almond-shaped eyes as clear and innocent as the cat’s eyes in the surveillance footage.
Yuan Duan: “…”
She sighed in resignation. “Ah, I’m worrying for nothing. Fine, let me explain so you understand. You’ve heard of Mercury Entertainment, right?”
Mercury Entertainment. This company dominated half of the entertainment industry and was the most influential entertainment corporation in the country. Even those who rarely followed entertainment news knew of it.
Shen Yunmiao was certainly aware of Mercury Entertainment, though not because of its numerous artists or famous works.
But because Mercury Entertainment was backed by the Cheng family.
The Cheng family, an old-established clan that had seized the opportunity to transform, balanced deep-rooted heritage with cutting-edge technology.
The previous head of the Cheng family was no longer active, and the current head.
Was the name she had kept hidden in her heart for years.
Noticing the slight shift in Shen Yunmiao’s expression, Yuan Duan relaxed a little and continued, “Everyone knows who the CEO of Mercury Entertainment is. Qiao Jingshu is quite favored by our CEO Cheng. Ah, it’s better to be cautious. Just watch your back.”
After speaking, she didn’t expect much of a reaction from this seemingly slow-witted young girl, but to her surprise, Shen Yunmiao shook her head firmly:
“That won’t happen.”
“Huh?”
Shen Yunmiao took a deep breath, as if she had to say it and couldn’t hold it back. She spoke slowly, “I think President Cheng is a very good person. She wouldn’t let her artists harm others casually.”
President Cheng, Yuan Duan had been fortunate enough to collaborate with this acclaimed actress before. Tsk, that temper, she really couldn’t agree with Shen Yunmiao’s words. But she couldn’t outright say she thought the young President Cheng didn’t seem like a good person either.
She had to bite her tongue and tactfully replied, “Well, it’s hard to say. After all, people in high positions like that sometimes might not fully grasp the truth, right? Besides, I heard President Cheng has been sick lately and hasn’t been seen for a long time. Maybe Qiao Jingshu is just leveraging her authority?”
Sick?
Shen Yunmiao slowly clenched her costume, then, as if suddenly realizing something, abruptly let go. She couldn’t afford to damage this outfit.
She thanked Yuan Duan and quietly tucked the matter into her heart.
Only after becoming a cat did the young President Cheng realize how important money was. If Shen Yunmiao had a bit more money, she wouldn’t have to go filming during the holidays and could stay home to play with her instead.
She remembered clearly today was Labor Day, and school should have been on break long ago. Shen Yunmiao had left so early in the morning, surely for filming, and it was so late now with no sign of her return. She really didn’t seem to miss home at all.
Even the toy beneath her paws felt boring now. She pushed the pom-pom away and once again turned her mischievous claws toward the surveillance camera.
She’d never used this thing before, but she knew about it Shen Yunmiao could see her through it.
So why wasn’t she back yet?
Without hesitation, the young President Cheng swiped at it, but it dodged her again. As expected of a pet-specific surveillance device so responsive.
A competitive spirit ignited in her, and she channeled all the frustration from her boring day at home into chasing the pitiful round device. It seemed almost sentient as it darted straight toward the door.
The fluffy long-haired white kitten, her hunting instincts aroused, pounced fiercely just as the door opened, leaving only a swath of snow-white skirt in her line of sight.
Shen Yunmiao had just opened the door when a heavy ball of fur came flying at her.
She caught it with a smile, cradling the kitten in her arms. “Why are you so affectionate today, Guaiguai? Did you miss me?”
“Meow.”
Miss you? Hardly. I was chasing that useless thing you left at home.
The young President Cheng lifted her head with an air of dignity.
So adorable!
Shen Yunmiao couldn’t resist and planted a loud kiss on her.
“Meow.”
Disgusting. All slobber.
The young President Cheng stretched out a paw to push her away, but the effort was so feeble it seemed more like a coy refusal.
Shen Yunmiao ruffled her soft fur a couple of times before setting her little cat down. She said excitedly, “We didn’t get to properly enjoy the holiday during the Tomb-Sweeping Festival because of the earthquake. Look what I brought you today!”
What could it be? Besides canned food, cat sticks, or freeze-dried minnows?
The young President Cheng sniffed disdainfully, her tail twitching, but her body betrayed her as she walked over to Shen Yunmiao and rubbed her head against her. She was just scratching an itch, that’s all.
Shen Yunmiao didn’t mind her aloofness. She bent down, picked her up, and placed her on the dining table, then pulled a red gift box from her bag it looked expensive.
The young President Cheng glanced at it and let out a half-hearted meow: It’s acceptable, I suppose. But you’re really being too extravagant.
Shen Yunmiao had no idea that her cat was constantly worrying about her spending. Overjoyed, she held the cat’s paw and opened the box, revealing a red cord nestled inside.
Dangling from the cord was a delicate silver cat’s paw charm, exquisitely crafted and shimmering under the light.
Little CEO Cheng’s gaze was instantly drawn to it. Hmm, not bad.
She lifted her head with an air of pride, and Shen Yunmiao naturally understood this as a sign of approval, carefully fastening it around the kitten’s neck.
“Sweetie, there’s a tracking chip inside this. With it, no matter where you go, I’ll always be able to find you. So, you mustn’t break it, okay?”
The kitten’s flushed cheek was gently rubbed as she continued:
“My dear, you must always wear it, alright? Otherwise, if I can’t find you, I’ll be so worried.”
Her voice was tender, like rippling water, softly seeping into Cheng Jianian’s heart.
“Meow!”
Alright then, I’ll agree to it.
For the first time ever, Little CEO Cheng took the initiative to lick Shen Yunmiao’s fingertip.
