- Chapter 7 - My Wife Picks Me Up and Runs
Under the watchful eyes of CEO Cheng-brand cat, Shen Yunmiao finished replying to the messages, essentially thanking Jian Shen for his kindness while politely declining his offer.
Little CEO Cheng was quite satisfied, flicked her tail, sneered at the cat bed, and with a leap, hopped directly onto the bed.
Once on the bed, her large tail wagged triumphantly, like a white feather duster, flaunting her victory.
Shen Yunmiao, watching her, couldn’t bring herself to scold her. She could only sigh helplessly and say, “Be good, make sure to poke your head out from under the blanket later, or you’ll suffocate.”
“Meow?”
Do you think I’m stupid?
Little CEO Cheng indignantly sprawled across the only pillow, immediately enveloped by the faint scent of fresh snow. At first, it felt crisp and distant, but as she continued to sniff, the lingering notes transformed into a sweet, memorable fragrance.
Just like this person outwardly cold and aloof, yet so gentle and kind… Isn’t this testing this cat?!
CEO Cheng-brand cat lifted a paw to cover her face, trying to make her somewhat perverted sniffing less obvious.
After a long while, when there was no sound, she spread her paws and peeked out, only to find that Shen Yunmiao was no longer in front of her.
Huh?
Did she go talk to that old fool Jian Shen again? An inexplicable irritation surged in her heart, and Cheng Jianian sprawled out dejectedly.
Just then, an icy hand suddenly touched her belly. The unexpected move made all her fluffy fur stand on end, and a terrified “meow!” escaped her lips.
It wasn’t just her voice her soul seemed to have leaped out, too.
Little CEO Cheng glared resentfully at the culprit.
Shen Yunmiao, completely unaware, smiled as she stroked the kitten’s belly and said cheerfully, “Did I scare you?”
“…” How childish.
Little CEO Cheng couldn’t be bothered to argue, but Shen Yunmiao’s hands were freezing. Could this be the standard for female protagonists perpetually cold hands and feet?
How pitiful. Out of the kindness of her heart, she decided to warm them up.
She crossed her four paws and placed them over Shen Yunmiao’s hand, forming a cozy enclosure.
Watching her actions, Shen Yunmiao felt a wave of tenderness in her heart.
She was someone who led a simple life, with few friends and accustomed to solitude. This little kitten made her feel the warmth of life for the first time and… experience a long-lost sense of comfort.
She reached out her other hand to lift the kitten and nuzzled her face against its soft fur. “Thank you, my dear.”
CEO Cheng-brand cat turned her face away awkwardly, a strange feeling welling up inside. She never wanted to be a cat, but damn it, why couldn’t she control herself from acting like one?!
From now on, she absolutely must not behave like a cat anymore. She couldn’t be so accommodating to Shen Yunmiao either, lest she take advantage of it. Humans were all like that once they got what they wanted, they stopped cherishing it. She couldn’t be a foolish, submissive kitten.
Cheng Jianian silently laid out plans and rules for herself, growing increasingly eager to contact her subordinates.
Nighttime was naturally suited for doing things no one else needed to know about.
After confirming that Shen Yunmiao was sound asleep, Cheng Jianian stealthily slipped out from under the covers. Brr, the heating really wasn’t warm enough. The rush of cold air outside the blankets nearly froze this cat to death.
Shivering, she hopped onto the nightstand and finally reached the phone. Thankfully, she wasn’t so weak that she couldn’t jump.
The sensation of a cat’s paw was slightly different from that of a human hand. It took her a while to manage to light up the screen, but who doesn’t have a lock screen password these days? She circled the phone a few times, trying to figure out how to unlock it, but it was no use.
Little Cheng Zong wasn’t one to give up easily. She struggled to find the right angle, then bit down and picked up the phone with her mouth. Trembling, she jumped down again.
Luckily, the bed was soft enough that the sound wasn’t too loud. Shen Yunmiao was only slightly startled by the noise. In the darkness, her long eyelashes fluttered faintly before settling back into stillness.
Her awareness of safety is just too poor. No wonder the female lead always ends up suffering for no reason her precautions are practically nonexistent.
While mentally complaining, Cheng Jianian hurriedly moved the phone closer to Shen Yunmiao’s hand.
One step, two steps. She was almost there. Seeing the soft fingertips so close, Little Cheng Zong began to worry again: How could she avoid waking Shen Yunmiao?
She definitely didn’t want Shen Yunmiao to discover she wasn’t an ordinary cat. At best, she’d be sent to a lab; at worst humans tend to be ruthless toward the unknown.
The thought made her desire to return to her human body even stronger.
The little white cat twisted her neck at an awkward angle, barely managing to find a spot to press against Shen Yunmiao’s finger. Her heart pounded like thunder as she slowly pressed closer… Damn it, just a little more!
Cheng Zong was nearly furious with frustration. She tilted her head slightly and strained to press against it again, beep beep beep! Without warning, the phone suddenly blared an alarm.
A countdown timer flashed on the screen, sending a chill down her spine.
The noise not only startled the human but also stunned the cat.
Before Little Cheng Zong could process what was happening, she was scooped up into a tight embrace, jostled and dizzy as she was carried out of the room.
“…Meow…”
Oh no, the phone…
Gradually, the countdown ended, replaced by an even more jarring alarm.
The hand that had finally warmed up under the blankets calmly stroked her: “Good girl, don’t be scared. Big sister is here, it’s okay, it’s okay. Nothing will happen.”
Cheng Jianian wasn’t stupid, she knew it was an earthquake.
But she was still shaken.
They lived on a low floor, and Shen Yunmiao reacted quickly. By the time they reached the ground, almost no one else was outside. Gradually, people began streaming down, and the residential area lit up with lights and overlapping complaints.
Little Cheng Zong numbly poked her head out from under Shen Yunmiao’s long coat, her ears twitching in despair.
What kind of mess is this? Just when I was about to accomplish something, this happens.
Wasn’t it said that animals can sense earthquakes? Why didn’t I feel anything?
And this wasn’t in the plot either, I don’t remember Shen Yunmiao ever experiencing an earthquake!
Little Cheng Zong was filled with a thousand grievances, but she felt slightly better after looking around. Take that useless owner over there, for example he ran out shirtless, and his cat is freezing along with him.
Unlike her owner, who was clearly the world’s favorite daughter not only did she run fast during the earthquake, but she also remembered to put on thick clothes and carry her cat.
With that thought, she let out a couple of soft meows, sounding sweet and utterly adorable.
That familiar hand, now cold again, reached up and gently rubbed the top of her head: “Good girl, don’t be scared. We’ll be fine.”
“Of course you’ll be fine. You’re the chosen one, the protagonist of this world. Even if there were an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, melting icebergs, or a great flood, you’d come out unscathed.”
The little white cat rubbed against that hand, signaling that it was alright.
Just then, a phone call came through.
Shen Yunmiao answered the call, and Cheng Jinian spoke first: “Hanfeng, I’m fine, don’t worry.”
Ji Hanfeng’s voice was sharp with panic even through the phone: “Fine? It was almost a magnitude 7 earthquake! Wait for me, don’t go back to that house. I’m coming back to get you right now.”
Shen Yunmiao’s voice remained gentle: “There’s no need to worry, I’m truly fine. Besides, Hanfeng, by the time you return, the earthquake will have passed. Just focus on your studies.”
Ji Hanfeng had been frightened earlier, but now that he’d calmed down, he realized how impractical his words were. He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed heavily: “You’re right. How about this, I’ll call home and have them send a car for you.”
“Really, there’s no need. Your relationship with your family is already strained. Making this call now won’t do you any good.”
After another long silence, just when Cheng Jinian thought the useless male lead had hung up, she heard him say:
“Yunmiao, you’re a very, very important friend to me. I can’t stand by and do nothing while you’re in danger. I’d give up not just the Ji family, but even my life for you.”
His affectionate tone sent a chill down the spine of the privileged young CEO Cheng Jinian. Suddenly, she remembered which part of the plot this was.
During Shen Yunmiao’s university years, she had indeed met Ji Hanfeng once.
In his second year abroad, Ji Hanfeng had a huge fight with his family and recklessly returned to find Shen Yunmiao. It was at this time that “Cheng Jinian” became aware of Ji Hanfeng’s feelings for Shen Yunmiao and directly pressured Jian Shen to replace her.
But who would have thought that Jian Shen was tough, he completely ignored her warnings, insisted on keeping Shen Yunmiao for the film, and even cast her as the female lead in his next movie.
Driven mad with jealousy, “Cheng Jinian” deliberately caused a car accident in a fit of rage, leaving Jian Shen in a vegetative state. After that, no one dared to cast Shen Yunmiao again.
Initially, Cheng Jinian hadn’t connected this part of the story because most of the plot she’d received was from the perspective of “Cheng Jinian,” the supporting female character. She hadn’t known Ji Hanfeng’s reasons for his actions and had overlooked the cause.
An intense wave of frustration washed over her. Cheng Jinian silently cursed Ji Hanfeng as a jinx who brought disaster to others, then cursed the damn plot itself. She pitied Shen Yunmiao, the female lead, who faced bullying, casting couch demands, or earthquakes almost daily.
And all these misfortunes were merely to set the stage for Ji Hanfeng, the irresponsible, useless male lead to swoop in dramatically, only to create more disasters.
If only she could change the plot… The moment she realized what she was thinking, Cheng Jinian froze. What was wrong with her? Had she been infected by Ji Hanfeng? How could she entertain such an unrealistic thought?
Given the current situation… never mind helping Shen Yunmiao escape her suffering she probably couldn’t even change her own fate.
Right now, she was just a cat that could easily be killed by stray dogs or abused by children. And even if she could return to her own body, what could she actually do?
“Cheng Jianian” had only one purpose in this world to create obstacles for Shen Yunmiao and Ji Hanfeng.
A mix of emotions frustration, confusion, and pain flooded her heart all at once.
For a moment, her feelings were indescribably complex.
Suddenly, she heard Shen Yunmiao’s gentle sigh:
“Hanfeng, I’m truly grateful that you consider me such an important friend. But I really must ask you not to come anymore. I don’t need your help, I believe the police would be more useful in this situation.”
“Please don’t say things like ‘I wouldn’t mind losing my life for you’ anymore. It makes me deeply uneasy. Life is the most precious thing a person has. You don’t live for me, and my life won’t fall apart without you.”
“We each have our own paths to follow, Hanfeng. I’m hanging up now. Thank you again, and I wish you all the best.”
The call ended.
Shen Yunmiao leaned over again to kiss her kitten.
Young CEO Cheng stared blankly into those clear, beautiful eyes, shimmering like morning dew in early autumn, her heart pounding like a drum.
