- Chapter 5 - Honey, This Water Is Electrified! Meow!
Being a cat did have its perks. Shen Yunmiao answered the phone right in front of Cheng Nianian without a hint of wariness, completely unaware that this little kitten of hers was supposed to be the one who would bring her endless hardships.
In a hurry to assemble the cat tree, Shen Yunmiao set the phone on the floor and put it on speaker. Ji Hanfeng’s low, slightly hoarse voice came through:
“Yunmiao, how have you been lately?”
“Not bad. I just rented a place today and brought the kitten home.” Shen Yunmiao didn’t pause her work.
Ji Hanfeng hesitated, then said, “Yunmiao, you can barely support yourself. Why are you raising a cat?”
His tone was a bit sharp. Cheng Nianian shot a displeased glare in his direction, and Shen Yunmiao quickly reached out to stroke the kitten’s soft back fur twice.
Her voice remained gentle, but her words carried a clear warning: “Hanfeng, I have you on speaker. Don’t say things like that the kitten will be upset. I know you’re worried about me, but there’s no need. I’ve found a well-paying part-time job, and now I can support both the kitten and myself.”
Ji Hanfeng had no choice but to relent. “Do as you please, but make sure you check out the company you’re working for. Don’t get scammed.”
“I won’t. A very renowned director asked me to act in a film,” Shen Yunmiao said, pulling Cheng Nianian into her arms and soothingly petting her. “I looked it up online, it’s legitimate. The director is highly respected and wouldn’t scam me.”
“You still need to be careful. What if he’s trying to take advantage of you?”
Shen Yunmiao sighed and said seriously, “Hanfeng, don’t say things like that. The director who approached me is Jian Shen. He’s a good person, he even advanced me some of my pay today. Besides, Director Jian is so handsome himself. Why would he be interested in someone like me?”
Ji Hanfeng had nothing more to say. “You always have an answer for everything. Just remember to call me if anything seems off.”
“I will. Thank you, Hanfeng.” After politely expressing her gratitude, Shen Yunmiao hung up without hesitation.
Ji Hanfeng had wanted to say more, but hearing the dial tone, he fell silent.
He couldn’t help shaking his head and sighing inwardly. His dear friend really hadn’t changed her temperament over the years.
Cheng Nianian, who had listened to the entire conversation, was quite satisfied. That’s more like it. What’s the use of being so friendly with a useless person like Ji Hanfeng?
Shen Yunmiao, focused on assembling the cat tree, had already finished. She picked Cheng Nianian up and placed her on it, excitedly saying, “Sweetie, try it out and see if it’s fun.”
The little CEO critically extended a paw to scratch it. Hmm, barely passable. At least there’s no strange smell.
She obligingly took a stroll around it and, under Shen Yunmiao’s praise, grew increasingly pleased with herself. She jumped down steadily, intending to show off.
But then her foot slipped. The large cat let out an undignified yowl as she tumbled down ungracefully and flopped onto the floor.
Shen Yunmiao rushed over to check on her. “Sweetie, are you okay? Don’t be scared, don’t be scared.”
Cheng Nianian’s white fur practically turned pink with embarrassment. She was too mortified to look up at Shen Yunmiao.
But Shen Yunmiao insisted on holding her up like a pancake, examining her carefully from head to tail. Cheng Nianian meowed twice in protest, but her objections were ignored. Instead, she received a stern lecture:
“Sweetie, you are not allowed to jump from such high places again, understand? It’s very dangerous, and I’d be worried about you.”
Cheng Nianian was forced to meow twice in acknowledgment before she was finally set down.
Shen Yunmiao held her close, their faces almost touching, and said, “I have nothing, only you. You mustn’t do such dangerous things again, understand?”
Dangerous, my foot. Jumping from that height is child’s play for a cat, Cheng Nianian thought indignantly. But when she met those beautiful, starry eyes shimmering under the light, she found herself speechless.
Fine, this female lead is quite pitiful after all.
She had always been an orphan, encountered so many terrible people at school, isolated and bullied. She probably never had many friends, which was why she was deceived by that good-for-nothing Ji Hanfeng. Now that she finally had a cat to care for, she was likely pouring all her emotions into it.
So, she obediently let out a soft “meow” in response, sticking out her tongue to gently lick Shen Yunmiao’s hand.
This was already the boldest action she could muster. Acting like a real cat, being coquettish and cute that was simply impossible. CEO Cheng could never bring herself to do such a thing.
Cheng Nianian flicked her tail, thinking she had already given Shen Yunmiao enough face.
Shen Yunmiao cradled her in her arms, her voice gentle. “Good girl, shall we go over the script together?”
“I start work tomorrow. The director said it won’t be too busy and shouldn’t interfere with my classes, but it doesn’t matter anyway. Winter break is coming soon, and then I can focus on filming.” Shen Yunmiao sighed softly. “I wonder if acting is difficult. I’ve never done it before. I’m really worried I won’t meet their expectations, but…” She rested her chin on Cheng Nianian’s head, the soft fur comforting. “Acting pays really well. I need to earn a lot of money to support both of us.”
Don’t worry, you’re incredibly talented. You’re the protagonist favored by this world. Your acting skills were exceptional from the very start, and you performed brilliantly, achieving things many people strive for their entire lives.
Cheng Nianian silently answered Shen Yunmiao’s concerns in her heart.
The two of them, one human and one cat, spent the quiet night together.
Early the next morning, while Cheng Nianian was still drowsy and half-asleep, she opened her eyes to see Shen Yunmiao packing her things for the day. Noticing Cheng Nianian was awake, Shen Yunmiao walked over, casually ruffled her head, and gave her a kiss, reluctant to part.
“Good girl, behave at home, okay? Don’t run around and hurt yourself again, understand? I’ll be back tonight and bring you something delicious.”
Cheng Nianian: “Meow.”
Hurry up and go. Such a dawdler.
Shen Yunmiao nuzzled Cheng Nianian’s head one more time before locking the door and leaving.
As soon as she was gone, Cheng Nianian sprang into action. While the female lead was around, she couldn’t do much, but now that she was alone, she needed to quickly contact her old friends and find a way to return to her own body.
CEO Cheng’s first thought was to use a computer. Once she could log into her social accounts, she could reach her subordinates. Her absence these past few days must have thrown the Cheng family into chaos. No matter what, she had to stabilize the situation first.
But after circling the apartment, she found no computer not even any other electronic devices. There wasn’t even a lesser alternative to fall back on.
CEO Cheng was on the verge of despair. The extent of Shen Yunmiao’s poverty was beyond her comprehension. No wonder those snobbish classmates in high school had bullied and isolated the poor female lead, she really was quite poor.
Young CEO Cheng started grumbling again about Ji Hanfeng, the useless male lead. Not only had he been forced to leave his hometown by his family, but he was also causing trouble for the person he liked.
Shen Yunmiao was truly pitiful, born into such a novel world, destined to live a life of hardship, constantly facing setbacks only to be saved by the male lead and undergo some pointless growth.
If it were her, she definitely wouldn’t let Shen Yunmiao suffer misfortune every day. As the chosen one of fate, she ought to be nurtured with an abundance of wealth.
CEO Cheng, now in the form of a cat, sighed in resignation, giving up on the idea of using the computer and instead turning her thoughts to the plot and what to do next.
First and foremost, she needed to find a way to return to her own body as quickly as possible. But what would happen after she returned?
Follow the plot? Absolutely not. Aside from the miserable fate that awaited her in the original story, she couldn’t bring herself to harm Shen Yunmiao, especially since this person had once shown her kindness.
But if she didn’t follow the plot, would uncontrollable events like the car accident happen again?
Cheng Jianian wasn’t sure. The uncertainty of her fate and the confusion of being turned into a cat weighed heavily on her heart. It was strange, no one in this novel world seemed fortunate. Her later life was destined to be tragic, and Shen Yunmiao’s early life was no better.
Thinking about it carefully, even that good-for-nothing Ji Hanfeng hadn’t had many good days.
What kind of novel was this, where all the main characters suffered so miserably?
Young CEO Cheng couldn’t understand it. Young CEO Cheng took a sip of water.
Damn, this water dispenser is leaking electricity!!!
“Xiao Shen, are you really sure you have no acting experience?” Jian Shen exclaimed in amazement as she watched the footage, which had been shot perfectly in one take.
Shen Yunmiao blushed and nodded slowly. “Yes, I’ve never really been involved in acting before.”
Jian Shen patted her shoulder. “It seems I’ve managed to snag the screen debut of a future international superstar.”
Shen Yunmiao grew even more embarrassed. “Director Jian, please don’t say that. It’s all thanks to your guidance.”
“Haha, what guidance?” Jian Shen brushed it off casually. “Your next scene will have to wait a few days. Take this time to rest properly. I’ll let you know before we start filming. Aren’t you still a student at A University? Your studies shouldn’t be neglected.”
A University was the top institution in the country, and she’d heard this girl was majoring in mathematics. As someone in the arts, even if she didn’t fully understand the subject, Jian Shen knew such a major couldn’t be easy.
Jian Shen was still relatively young, having just turned forty, but she had already swept several international gold awards and was among the top-tier directors domestically.
She didn’t care about an actor’s fame or the genre, she only pursued projects she was passionate about and wasn’t afraid to cast newcomers. Many award-winning actors and actresses had been discovered under her direction.
Pulling someone off the street who fit the character’s image for an audition wasn’t something she was doing for the first time, but Shen Yunmiao still surprised her. She never expected a non-professional with no prior acting experience to perform so well.
Her audition had already stood out, and now, during the actual filming, even with a script she’d just received, her performance was remarkably smooth.
Jian Shen had a soft spot for talent. During the break, she asked, “Do you plan to continue acting in the future?”
Shen Yunmiao nodded honestly. “Yes, I do because I’m in need of money.”
Seemingly caught off guard by the girl’s honesty, Jian Shen was momentarily stunned before breaking into a smile. “Alright, then you’ll be the female lead in my next film. I’ll tailor a script just for you, and the pay will definitely satisfy you.”
Shen Yunmiao froze for a moment. Though she had intended to enter the entertainment industry through Jian Shen, this was almost too smooth directly becoming the female lead for an internationally renowned director?
Her dazed expression made Jian Shen laugh heartily. He patted her shoulder cheerfully and said, “Hey, it’s getting late today. The place you’re renting is quite far from here, right? Why don’t you stay over? Come to my room tonight, and I’ll give you some guidance.”
Shen Yunmiao: “…?”
That jinx Ji Hanfeng!!!
