- After the Vicious Supporting Female Character Became the Heroine's Cat
- Chapter 4 - The Official Love Interest Appears!
By the time Shen Yunmiao found a suitable apartment, it was already 7 p.m. After signing the contract and bidding farewell to the landlord, she picked up her cat carrier and prepared to pick up Guaiguai.
“Young lady, are you renting a place to keep a cat?” The landlord, a kind-hearted aunt, smiled as she observed Shen Yunmiao.
Shen Yunmiao blushed and nodded. “Yes, Auntie. One of my roommates isn’t too fond of cats, and I didn’t feel right bringing a kitten back to the dorm. Having my own place makes it much easier.”
Thinking of her Guaiguai, Shen Yunmiao felt a wave of tenderness. Though there were many suitable apartments available, this was the only one where the landlord had no issue with her keeping a cat.
“My daughter is about your age and always says she wants a cat too, but I think it’s too much trouble and won’t let her. If she were as responsible as you, I’d have allowed it long ago,” the landlord sighed.
Shen Yunmiao felt a bit embarrassed. She wasn’t particularly skilled at handling such polite small talk, and her mind was still preoccupied with her kitten. Grabbing the cat carrier, she headed out, saying, “Auntie, I’m off to pick up my cat now.”
“Alright, take care.”
Once outside, Shen Yunmiao let out a long sigh of relief. She really didn’t enjoy talking so much with strangers, but staying silent would have seemed impolite.
Being with her cat was much better, no need to overthink things. The director had paid her generously, enough to cover six months’ rent and even buy a small electric scooter. That would make it easier to take her kitten out for adventures.
In the future, she planned to act in many more dramas and earn lots of money, so her cat could have everything other cats enjoyed.
As these thoughts crossed her mind, Shen Yunmiao’s lips curled into an unconscious smile, and a profound sense of joy filled her heart.
When she arrived at the usual spot, however, she couldn’t find the familiar little white fluffball. A group of cats swarmed around her, and she patiently fed them one by one, asking as she did, “Has anyone seen Guaiguai? The white one, the adorable little sweetheart.”
Unfortunately, the cats only tilted their heads and meowed, leaving Shen Yunmiao clueless about what they were trying to say.
A strong sense of unease quickly replaced her earlier excitement. Distractedly finishing feeding the cats, she prepared to hurry off and search for her kitten.
Just as she was about to leave, a black cat suddenly approached and rubbed against her. Shen Yunmiao crouched down and stroked its head. “Little Black, I need to go find Guaiguai. Can you eat first?”
The black cat let out a sweet, drawn-out meow: “Meeeow, meow~”
Having fed these cats often, Shen Yunmiao immediately sensed something was wrong. She reached out and touched the black cat’s belly, it was sticky and covered in blood.
Frowning, she asked, “Little Black, what happened? Did you get into a fight?”
In Shen Yunmiao’s memory, this black cat was quite the fighter and rarely got injured. It seemed to be the boss among the local cats.
However, Shen Yunmiao wasn’t particularly fond of it because she had once caught it bullying her little white cat. The poor white kitten had whimpered and hid, crying out in pain.
Though she had intervened and scolded the black cat back then, there was no guarantee it wouldn’t pick another fight. Shen Yunmiao scanned the surrounding cats and, sure enough, Guaiguai was the only one missing.
If this black cat, a capable fighter, was injured so badly after a fight, then the cat it fought with must be in even worse shape likely too hurt to come out for food.
Shen Yunmiao narrowed her eyes slightly, a hint of scrutiny flashing in her gaze.
The black cat, sensing that the usually gentle person had abruptly changed today, instinctively shrank back and moved farther away.
In the dimly lit alley, the barking of dogs rose and fell incessantly. A few dilapidated wooden crates were kicked around, sending clouds of dust swirling into the air, making it hard to breathe.
Amidst this chaos, a small white cat looked particularly pitiful, surrounded by several stray dogs drooling hungrily.
Cheng Jianian eyed the pack of dogs, calculating how she could escape from their midst while silently hoping that the foolish little white cat wouldn’t show up at such a time.
Otherwise, she’d have an extra burden to bear, making the situation even more difficult.
Hoping for the kind-hearted female lead to come to her rescue at this point was unrealistic. Besides, Little Cheng Zong was not one to indulge in impractical fantasies.
As the two leading dogs drew closer, Cheng Jianian quietly unsheathed her claws. Taking on one wouldn’t be a problem, but if the entire pack attacked at once, her best bet was to find the right moment to make a run for it.
She silently strategized in her mind.
The light was too faint, the night too dark, with only a few pairs of eyes glowing eerily in the gloom.
Her body was tensed to the extreme, her heartbeat racing with fear.
Just as the tension reached its peak, a beam of light suddenly pierced the darkness, illuminating the entire alley with an almost blinding intensity.
The stray dogs turned warily but did not scatter.
The light shone directly into their feral eyes, causing discomfort but not enough to drive them away. This place was usually avoided by people, as most would steer clear of an area teeming with dogs.
But the person who arrived today was different. She seemed determined to enter, stepping steadily into the alley without a care for the pack of strays.
The beam of light, emanating from her, enveloped the small white cat at the center. After enduring the torment of the night for so long, the cat could no longer hold back and let out two soft, plaintive meows.
The stray dogs, though wary, bared their teeth and growled, trying to intimidate this person who clearly had never been bitten and didn’t know the pain. But their efforts failed.
She continued walking into the pitch-black alley, the wind rustling the edges of her thin clothing, outlining a resilient figure. Moonlight reflected in her almond-shaped eyes, clear and bright like the dew of early autumn.
Cheng Jianian had never found her so pleasing to the eye before, bringing an unexpected sense of calm to this feline’s heart.
When the girl picked her up, she didn’t resist or struggle. Instead, she allowed herself to be enveloped by the refreshing, snow-like scent.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice remained as gentle and steady as ever:
“Don’t be afraid, little one. I’m here.”
Little Cheng Zong, in her feline form, felt her nose tingle and her eyes nearly well up with tears. Instinctively, she nuzzled against this person who should have been her sworn enemy. So soft, so fragrant this cat liked it very much.
Only after they had left the alley did Cheng Jianian snap out of her daze and realize what she had just done. It was all because of those stray dogs. If not for them, she wouldn’t have done something so foolish.
Little Cheng Zong, in her feline form, angrily stomped on Shen Yunmiao’s arm. It was also this person’s fault, why did she have to come looking for her? She didn’t need anyone’s help. How annoying.
Sensing her movement, Shen Yunmiao couldn’t hold back a soft laugh. She raised her hand and gently rubbed the little cat’s head. “Since when did you start kneading?”
Kneading?
Little Cheng Zong, who was always composed in the business world, flushed bright red instantly. Who was kneading? She was clearly kicking her! What nonsense!
She must be so deprived of cats that she’s lost her mind.
Little Boss Cheng stomped her paws a few more times fiercely, trying to prove she wasn’t just fooling around. But this time, instead of being petted, she was directly kissed!!!
The sensation on the top of her head was warm and soft. The young woman’s lips were full, and when they pressed down, it felt like a seal being stamped. Mimi was utterly defenseless.
Little Boss Cheng thought that if this person hadn’t behaved decently today, she would’ve definitely taught her a lesson.
Shen Yunmiao had no idea what was going on in the kitten’s mind. She carried the kitten back to the same hospital as yesterday, where the vet performed a quick checkup and told her the kitten was fine but could get a vaccine.
Shen Yunmiao agreed without hesitation. Now that she had money, of course she would spend it on the kitten, what else was she earning so much for? Though she still wished she had more; if she did, she’d set up a few machines at home to check on the kitten’s health anytime, just to be completely at ease.
Meanwhile, Cheng Jianian had already regained her energy and was plotting to fiercely scratch that black cat. Next time, she’d wait for those dogs to be alone and teach them a harsh lesson.
But as they left the hospital, she was dumbfounded. Shen Yunmiao didn’t take her back to the alley where the stray cats usually gathered. Instead, she brought her to an unfamiliar apartment.
It was a small one-bedroom unit, compact but fully equipped. The appliances and decor were passable not too shabby.
Cheng Jianian recalled what Shen Yunmiao had said that morning. Her fluffy tail, dangling in the air, swayed unconsciously. Hmph, at least she remembered her promise.
Turning on the light, Shen Yunmiao finally set the kitten down. Gently stroking the kitten’s head, she said, “This, my dear, will be our home from now on. In the future, big sister will act in lots of movies and earn plenty of money. We’ll definitely move to a bigger, prettier house.”
Big, big sister?
Little Boss Cheng blushed instantly. Who was her little sister? Calling herself “big sister” like that, how nauseating!
Her thoughts began to wander. Little Boss Cheng wasn’t just talented in acting; she was a business prodigy. Acting was purely a hobby for her. As a businessperson, her memory was sharper than most. She still remembered from the plot that there was a time when she ruined Shen Yunmiao’s birthday. When was that again, April 21st!
Little Boss Cheng’s birthday was in the summer, on June 15th. By that calculation, calling Shen Yunmiao “big sister” wasn’t entirely out of line.
What about Ji Hanfeng’s birthday? Never mind, it didn’t matter. Even the thought of that name annoyed her, let alone recalling anything related to that person.
Anyway, she figured even if Ji Hanfeng were younger than Shen Yunmiao, he’d never have the nerve to call her “big sister.” That would be too disgusting. But as a cat, she could reluctantly let it slide for now.
While Cheng Jianian was still comparing birthdays, Shen Yunmiao had already briskly tidied up a clean area and arranged the cat supplies she’d bought at the pet hospital.
The cat bed was a soft blue with a layer of white fur around the opening, looking incredibly cozy. The food bowl had two little cat ear decorations, and even a cat tree was set up.
The picky Little Boss Cheng circled around, inspecting everything, and nodded in reluctant approval.
“Meow.”
Not bad.
Shen Yunmiao was assembling the cat tree and couldn’t help but laugh at the kitten’s already proprietorial demeanor. “Is my baby satisfied?”
“Meow, meow!”
It’ll do.
Little Boss Cheng slightly lifted her chin, the little white cat exuding an air of pride and elegance.
Shen Yunmiao felt an itch in her heart, truly wishing she could immediately pull the kitten into her arms and give it a good squeeze.
But first, assembling the cat tree for the little one was more important, so she quickened her pace.
Cheng Jianian stopped meowing and obediently lay down beside her, looking very well-behaved.
Under the night sky, the two of them one human, one cat shared the warm glow of the light.
Cheng Jianian felt a warmth that had long been missing from her life.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
The unknown call abruptly shattered the tranquil atmosphere. Shen Yunmiao’s phone was placed on the floor as she followed the assembly tutorial, so Cheng Jianian caught a clear glimpse of the caller ID, it was that familiar name:
—Ji Hanfeng.
