- Chapter 3 - My Wife Has a Cat Bullying Me, Wuwu.
“Let’s run! I remember last time they burned that gray cat with cigarette butts, leaving marks all over its body,” Xiao Bai said fearfully to Cheng Jianian.
Cheng Jianian was no fool. Even after years of being the arrogant young CEO Cheng, she knew times had changed. She was now the fish on the chopping block, and staying put would only be tempting fate with this second chance at life.
The two cats immediately bolted outward, stirring up a gust of wind. They already had some distance from the children, and running for their lives naturally allowed them to shake off their pursuers.
Only at the next intersection did the two cats dare to stop, panting heavily.
Xiao Bai lamented, “The world is so unfair to us. If only we could be human.”
Cheng Jianian sighed, “Being human comes with its own troubles.”
Take her, for instance. Even though she was seen by many as living at the pinnacle of society, she still faced numerous frustrations.
However, being human at least guaranteed safety, no need to constantly flee for survival.
Xiao Bai asked, “But at least they get enough to eat, right?”
Cheng Jianian neither denied nor confirmed, simply lowering her head and saying, “Let’s head back first.”
Before Xiao Bai could respond, another series of meows rang out:
“Didn’t I tell you? You two ugly creatures aren’t allowed in my territory again.”
The voice came from above. Cheng Jianian looked up and saw a pure black cat without a single stray hair perched on the rooftop.
No need to guess this was likely the cat that had killed her original body. Cheng Jianian had no intention of indulging this troublemaker and remained coldly silent.
Xiao Bai began trembling in fear again. “Sorry, we didn’t mean to. We’ll leave right now. Please don’t hurt us.”
The black cat sneered, “Useless weakling. Are you only good at begging for mercy?”
Cheng Jianian had never endured such humiliation. Fresh and old grievances made her want to unsheathe her claws. Whether she could win or not, she wouldn’t let this black cat off easily.
Young CEO Cheng had always had a cold temper and was not one to be trifled with. Having inherited her mother’s legacy, she looked down on no one in the business world, yet her ventures thrived.
Even those high-and-mighty executives feared her there was no reason she should let some stray cat threaten her now.
But, Shen Yunmiao’s parting words echoed in her ears. Cheng Jianian knew that, however reluctant she was, Shen Yunmiao was undoubtedly her best chance of returning to human society. She only needed to endure one more day until Shen Yunmiao came to take her away. Just a little longer.
She forced herself to swallow her pride and apologize, “I’m sorry, we really didn’t mean to. Please let us go.”
The black cat approached, sniffing her. The sensation made Cheng Jianian, who had only recently become a cat, extremely uncomfortable, but she forced herself not to retreat.
Soon, the black cat sneered, “That person fed you again, didn’t they? They’re so good to you.”
It licked its paw casually and said, “I’ll let you off on one condition: when that person comes to feed you tonight, you’re not allowed to show up.”
Clearly, this black cat also wanted to win Shen Yunmiao’s favor. A surge of inexplicable anger rose in Cheng Jianian. She shot a glance at Xiao Bai, and the next moment, just as the black cat was about to lower its freshly cleaned paw, she swiped her claws toward its black neck.
The black cat hadn’t expected her to dare strike, and caught off guard, a few drops of blood welled up on its neck from the scratches. Instantly enraged, it let out a low growl from its throat, shifting into a battle-ready stance.
But its enemy had already fled far away.
The black cat wanted to give chase, but then came the voices of several children from behind.
How annoying, it’s those little troublemakers again. With a light leap, the black cat scaled the wall, temporarily sparing those two audacious white cats.
Cheng Jianian and Xiao Bai sprinted wildly once more. Unaware that the black cat had long stopped pursuing them, they raced frantically, fearing it might catch up.
They only stopped when they reached the spot where they had woken up that morning. Xiao Bai muttered, “Ugh, what a mess. So unlucky. Let’s just get some sleep for now.”
Cheng Jianian neither agreed nor disagreed. She curled her tail under her paws, exuding an air of noble elegance.
Xiao Bai sighed helplessly, “I feel like you’ve been acting strange ever since you got beaten up yesterday. You seem even prouder than that black cat.”
Because she was inherently more distinguished than that black cat.
So thought Little Cheng.
Yet she offered no explanation, silently wishing for nightfall to arrive sooner.
Dawn had only just broken.
The warm sunlight overhead stirred memories of that hand from this morning soft, warm, and comforting.
It made Mimi feel at ease.
However, their peace was short-lived. Those irritating noises returned, the group of children they had just shaken off.
Step by step, the children approached, holding unknown objects in their hands. The murkiness in their eyes was unsettlingly incongruent with their age, enough to make one sick. Cheng Jianian immediately arched her back, low growls rumbling from her throat as she assumed a defensive posture.
Beside her, Xiao Bai was still blissfully stretching his paws, eyes half-closed.
“Stop sleeping, those kids are here,” Cheng Jianian called to him.
Xiao Bai stumbled to his feet in a daze, staring blankly at the crowd encircling them.
“Wh-what do we do? Are we going to die here?” Xiao Bai’s voice trembled weakly, thick with fear.
Cheng Jianian took a deep breath, calming him, “It’s fine. We’ll slip through the gaps between them. Nothing will happen.”
“Okay.”
The two cats watched warily as the children slowly closed in. Having learned from past experience, they knew these brats meant no good.
But knowing didn’t change anything. Though a cat’s claws are sharp and its teeth fierce, they’re still at a disadvantage against humans and their various tools.
Even if those humans are just underage children.
Their malice alone could still cost the cats their lives.
In the two days since transmigrating into a cat, Cheng Jianian had experienced countless humiliations she’d never faced before.
How she wished she could scratch these little brats to death.
And Shen Yunmiao, why was her life so hard? She didn’t even have money to rent a place. It’s all Ji Hanfeng’s fault, being so unreasonably stingy, letting someone he supposedly likes suffer like this.
If it were her, she would never let someone she loved endure such hardships.
Cheng Jianian hissed angrily as a warning, successfully drawing the brats’ attention. Seizing the moment, she bolted while Xiao Bai dashed in the opposite direction as instructed.
The two cats fleeing in different directions confused the immature little troublemakers. After a moment’s hesitation, they decided to chase the fiercer one first, leaving the other for tomorrow.
Unsurprisingly, Cheng Jianian was the fiercer one.
The kitten was running quite fast, and under normal circumstances, the children wouldn’t have been able to catch up. But Cheng Jianian, worried that if they couldn’t catch her, they might turn back to chase Xiao Bai, deliberately slowed her pace, luring them along at a speed reminiscent of a cat toying with a mouse.
After covering about two streets, Cheng Jianian figured it was about time and immediately sped up, intending to shake off the children behind her. However, as misfortune would have it, she found herself facing a dead end.
It was a narrow alley with no way out. Poor Little Cheng, who had never been to such a shabby place before, naturally didn’t know her way around and had inadvertently dashed into this dead end.
Cheng Jianian turned around and watched as the excited little brats slowly closed in. Her fur stood on end, making her look like a fluffy ball.
At this critical moment, she suddenly remembered the black cat sitting on the wall earlier. Cats can climb walls!
Glancing at the towering wall in front of her and the eager children closing in behind, Little Cheng gritted her teeth. She leaped onto a nearby trash can first, then stepped onto a protruding brick along the edge she was halfway there.
Her paws trembled as she searched for the next foothold. Fortunately, her survival instinct kicked in, and she quickly found one. In a rather undignified manner, Little Cheng scrambled onto the top of the wall.
Now, looking down at those unruly children felt much more satisfying. She regained her usual arrogance, casting an almost contemptuous glance their way.
When she was human, she never paid any mind to such little brats. But as a cat, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of triumph over a formidable foe.
Her fluffy, oversized tail even swished back and forth leisurely as she watched the little brats below squealing and shouting in frustration.
Before long, the children, armed with slingshots, homemade “poisons,” and other unknown items, left in a huff.
Cheng Jianian wasn’t in a hurry to leave. The wall was quite high, and who knew what misfortune might befall her if she climbed down? She decided to lie down right there and take a nap, planning to wait for that fool Xiao Bai to come find her.
The golden sunlight bathed her warmly, enveloping the white cat with heterochromatic eyes like a cozy cocoon. In such a tranquil and warm environment, both humans and cats were bound to feel drowsy. Little Cheng closed her eyes and didn’t wake until evening.
She shook her head, feeling irritated. She had no idea what that fool Xiao Bai was up to why hadn’t he come to find her?
As she shook her head, a dull, heavy pain set in, as if her spirit and body were tearing apart. No doubt about it, this was the side effect of being a cat.
She stretched and prepared to climb down from the wall to look for Xiao Bai, while also checking whether Shen Yunmiao kept her word.
She hadn’t expected Shen Yunmiao to come pick her up, someone that poor wouldn’t be able to afford it. She simply wanted to see whether Shen Yunmiao, the female lead, was genuinely good or just a hypocrite. Nothing more.
“Meow, meow, meow, meow.”
Long time no see.
A familiar meow sounded from behind her. Cheng Jianian’s fur bristled instantly. She spun around and, sure enough, the black cat was lazily staring at her.
The top of the wall wasn’t particularly narrow otherwise, Cheng Jianian wouldn’t have been able to lie there all day. But in this situation, it felt like a narrow path where enemies were bound to meet.
“What do you want?” Cheng Jianian bared her claws. Earlier that morning, she had held back because Xiao Bai was with her, but she wasn’t one to endure humiliation quietly. Now, Little Cheng wouldn’t mind picking a fight to make a name for herself.
But the black cat paid her no mind, stepping closer step by step, extending a paw as if teasing its prey.
A fierce battle was imminent. The black and white cats tangled into a blurred ball of fur, their springtime coats shedding in the chaos. Claws and teeth met in a relentless exchange, neither holding back.
Cheng Jianian could clearly feel how much this body was holding her back. Though she fought with reckless abandon, the black cat still managed to kick her down. Not that she came out entirely empty-handed, the black cat’s abdomen was probably torn open.
The young CEO thought to herself, I didn’t lose, it’s just a fight with a cat.
But soon, she realized something was off. This wasn’t the alley she had come from.
At the far end of the alley, a flickering yellow light glimmered, dimmer than the already-set sun. The narrow passage stretched endlessly ahead, and the barking of dogs echoed from all directions.
A primal fear crept into her heart.
Just then, a series of meows sounded from above:
“Good luck to you.”
It was the black cat’s voice, half-mocking, half-gloating. Clearly, it knew what lurked in this alley and whatever it was, it was nothing good.
Cheng Jianian tried to climb the wall again but found the alley’s surfaces unusually smooth, with nothing to grip onto.
Gritting her teeth, she dashed toward the alley’s exit.
A white shadow shot forward like an arrow under the moonlight.
The black cat’s green eyes glinted faintly as it flicked its tail and went off to find that person. It was injured, but no matter she would take it to the vet.
As for this white cat, what a nuisance. It deserved to die under the fangs of those wild dogs, saving that person from being monopolized all the time.
